1 About this Guide The Aqualung Diver s Guide provides a wealth of information about the latest and greatest diving equipment available for the South African-based diver. It clearly explains how diving equipment works, how to fit equipment and what to look for when you re purchasing a new piece of diving kit. This guide is colour-coded for fast and easy reference. For example, if you re looking for information on regulators, simply flick to the orange border, and you ll find everything you need to know about choosing a regulator as well as a comprehensive list of regulators to suit any condition or budget. For a fast and efficient overview of features and benefits of some of the more complex equipment, this Guide uses a series of icons. The icons are relevant to each piece of equipment. 3 Regulators: Everything you want to know S cuba regulators are designed to reduce the high-pressure air from the scuba cylinder to a level where the diver can breathe comfortably and safely. Jacques Cousteau and Emile Gagnan developed the original regulator, the aqua lung. It was a twin-hose system that reduced the pressure in a single stage connected to a cylinder. These days, regulators are a single-hose design and the pressure is reduced in two stages. The first stage reduces pressure from the cylinder down to near 10 bar, then the second stage delivers air on demand. (That s why the second stage is sometimes called the demand valve.) Your regulator is the most important component of your diving equipment. It delivers the air you need to breathe. It is your lifesupport system. By reading through the selection criteria here and matching the features you require in the following pages you will be able to make an informed decision. Service and Parts The single most important factor when choosing a regulator is the ability to obtain regular, professional maintenance and spares. Ultimately, this will have more effect on your regulator s overall performance than any other factor. As your diving experience grows you ll want to discover new and exciting places to dive all over the world. Your regulator must be able to be serviced wherever you will be diving, whether that s the Ponto D OPura, Ou De Kraal or Belize. With so many regulators on the market it is impossible for the average dive store to carry parts for every regulator. Under-standably, they will restrict their parts inventory to the more popular brands. Also, it s unlikely that the average regulator technician will be qualified to service every regulator on the market. The first brand almost every technician learns to service is Aqua Lung. Aqua Lung was the first regulator ever made and it is still the most popular brand in the world today. No matter where you go in the world you will find parts and service are available. That s one of the reasons why more military forces around the world choose Aqua Lung than any other brand. Performance Many people believe performance is the major criteria in the choice of a regulator. Certainly, you should choose a regulator that is appropriate for the types of diving you intend to undertake. Most modern regulators will perform adequately under normal demand at moderate depths. The deeper you dive and the harder Buyer Beware you breathe (for example, swimming against a current at depth) will result in a higher demand on your regulator. So if you were planning on diving in demanding conditions, it would pay to invest in a high-performance regulator. Generally though, when it comes to judging performance, it pays to remember that the greatest testament to a regulator is its performance under harsh environments. Australia s Far North Queensland (FNQ) has the highest concentration of dive equipment usage in the world. Gear may be used 3 to 4 times a day, 7 days a week. These professional operators recognise the need for the best equipment. They also understand that the materials used and the design are critical for their customer s ultimate safety and comfort. Aqua Lung regulators have proved to be the most popular choice in FNQ and resorts around the world including Sodwana Bay. Unlike Aqua Lung, very few companies make their own regulators. Most equipment suppliers outsource products or simply rebadge or assemble components from existing manufacturers. This makes quality control very difficult and encourages obsolescence. Suppliers will move from one manufacturer to another as either the manufacturer is unable to supply the parts, or the supplier finds a cheaper alternative. Aqua Lung is owned by Air Liquide, one of the largest gas-control companies in the world. In fact, Cousteau took his original concept to Air Liquide over 50 years ago and it was an Air Liquide engineer, Emile Gagnan, who helped develop and build the first scuba regulator. Today Aqua Lung builds more regulators than any other company in the world. Some inexperienced regulator manufacturers constantly change their regulators to try to get their design right. They change core components like the high-pressure seat without provision for retrofitting existing models. Aqua Lung created scuba diving and like every great creator they recognise that progress is made through continuous evolution. Each new Aqua Lung regulator builds on the inherent qualities of its predecessor. Aqua Lung recognises the need to maintain a parts inventory for existing models. Take for example the current Aqua Lung high-pressure seat. While incorporating the latest technology, Aqua Lung s high-pressure seat still fits models over three decades old. In fact, just 2 different high-pressure seats are required to fit any Aqua Lung regulator sold in South Africa during the last 3 decades.

4 Adjustability There are two primary adjustments available on modern regulators. One type of adjustment will alter the positive flow of air. This is often called the venturi. A regulator with an effective venturi will generally breathe well, but may free-flow when not in the diver s mouth. A venturi adjustment is very important as this allows for maximum air delivery when required with a minimum switch to prevent free-flow. Other adjustments available on some models adjust the spring tension which controls the opening effort required. This is called the cracking resistance control (see diagram above). This allows the regulator to be adjusted to minimise breathing effort under all conditions. Pneumatically Balanced Valve System Regulators 5 Venturi Adjustment Knob Cracking Resistance Control Diaphragm Aqua Lung considers the adjustable venturi so important that, while most manufacturers reserve this feature for high-end products, every Aqua Lung regulator has this control. Venturi Adjustment Switch in negative position prevents freeflow of air Environmental Seal Switch in positive position, where the venturi vane directs air into the mouth piece and ensures minimum effort even under stressful conditions. In order to keep a consistent flow of air at depth your regulator needs to sense changes in depth. This is achieved in most regulators by allowing the regulator spring chamber to flood with water. Diaphragm style regulators achieve this through limited ingress of water, typical piston designs flood completely. Unfortunately when water completely floods through your regulator it carries with it damaging contaminants that will reduce the regulator s performance and life-span. Many attempts have been made to seal regulators; one system packed the regulator with oil, while another involved a continuous release of bubbles to keep the water out. The most effective system is the patented Dry Sealed System, which is available as an option on Aqua Lung regulators and standard on most models of Aqua Lung regulators. How to measure performance Before you can establish the level of performance required, you must first understand how performance is measured. Many different tests are quoted as a bench-mark level, but the most widely regarded is the US Navy test. It involves both manned and unmanned tests of regulator performance. The US Navy set 1.4-joules effort as the maximum inhalation effort. In order to qualify for the top level, category A, the regulator needs to meet these criteria at 62m at moderately heavy work rates. In the last test performed by the US Navy only six sport diving regulators qualified as category A. Two models were from Aqua Lung, the US Divers SE2 and the US Divers Pro Diver. These same two regulators came first and second respectively in the manned tests. These models have since been improved with the advent of the Titan and Legend series from Aqua Lung. The latest regulators from Aqualung have recorded less than 0.72-joules breathing effort at 80 m. This demonstrates effortless breathing at extreme depths. The Aqualung Legend LX is widely regarded as the best per-forming regulator in the world. Internal Diaphragm External Diaphragm The patented Dry Sealed System stops water entering the regulator Important Considerations There are two other factors to consider when choosing a regulator. The first is to ensure that your regulator has sufficient ports to accommodate all attachments. You need at least one high-pressure port for your gauge and you may want a second high pressure port for a second back-up gauge. In addition to your primary second stage port you will need three more low pressure ports for an octopus, BCD hose and possibly a drysuit inflator hose. The quantity and positioning of ports allow you to configure your regulator for maximum comfort. Finally, comfort of the mouthpiece is very important, as is the ability to change a mouthpiece should it become worn or damaged. The world s best mouthpiece is the Comfo-bite.

5 High Performance Regulator Features Balanced First Stage A balanced first stage has a balancing chamber which ensures that as tank pressure drops the pressure of air to the second stage is maintained. This allows the regulator to breathe easy even at low tank pressures. Overbalanced First Stage As the diver gets deeper the air they breath is compressed and therefore more air is needed to fill the diver s lungs. This is a basic principal taught in the beginner s dive course. Your first stage must be able to sense this outside pressure in order to maintain a steady flow of air to the second stage. Internal Diaphragm External Diaphragm A major difference in the performance of a regulator is its ability to maintain a constant flow at greater depths. With an overbalanced first stage the external diaphragm is larger than the internal diaphragm to boost line pressure at depth. All modern regulators sense outside pressure and compensate for the change, however most regulators still have a considerable drop in performance on deep dives as they cannot increase pressure sufficiently to compensate for the high demands at depth. An innovation only found in the highest performing regulators is called over-balancing. The very same second diaphragm that provides an environmental seal (see previous page) is larger than the internal diaphragm. This means that as you get deeper more pressure is applied to the external diaphragm than would be applied to the smaller internal diaphragm due to the increased surface area. This actually boosts pressure at greater depths, significantly improving performance. Balanced Second Stage Many companies claim to have a balanced regulator but all they are referring to is the first stage. The world s best performing regulators also have a balanced second stage. A traditional second stage has a valve spring strong enough to hold back all the pressure from the first stage. This spring pushes against the seating mechanism to stop the air-flow until the diver breathes. When the diver breathes, the diaphragm is pulled forward against the lever, which in turn compresses the spring & pulls back the seat to allow the air to flow. A balanced second stage allows air to pass through the centre of the poppet valve to a counter-balance cylinder, which assists the spring in closing the valve. This reduces the need for a heavier valve spring, which cuts down the effort needed to compress the spring which in turn makes inhalation very easy. A balanced second stage is therefore highly desirable. It reduces the high pressure air to the ambient pressure which can be breathed by the user. To achieve this reduction in pressure, Aqua Lung regulators have 2 reduction stages. Aqua Lung regulators are known as demand regulators. They supply air when the user inhales through the mouthpiece or presses on the purge button. The air flow stops when the user stops inhaling or releases the purge button. A. The Second Stage * The regulator s second stage reduces the medium pressure air to ambient pressure, allowing the user to breathe normally. The second stage is held in the user s mouth by the mouthpiece. The first and second stages are connected by the MP hose. * The Legend LX second stage is fitted with an adjustable air flow control system. It allows the diver to adjust the air flow to meet his needs. The control lever is found on the left of the stage, just in line with the mechanism. It can be operated at any time, on surface or during the dive. * The Legend LX second stage is also fitted with a breathing resistance adjustment system. This allows the diver to adjust the sensitivity of the breathing to meet their requirements. This system is situated in line with the mechanism. It can be operated at any time, on surface or during the dive. To adjust breathing sensitivity, the user has only to turn the adjusting knob.

The Hose * The Hose brings compressed air from the first stage of the regulator to the second stage. * The large internal diameter of the hose gives a higher instant air flow. It gives a 30% greater air flow than standard hoses, while remaining extremely flexible (Aqua Lung exclusive). * It s manufactured in accordance with the DEMA 104 standard (modified in 1985). It also passes the mechanical resistance & pressure tests required by the EN250 standard. * Its maximum working pressure is 30 bar. * The length of the hose is 740mm Care and Storage A. Regular Care The quality and regularity of after-dive care will ensure the maximum life of Aqua Lung regulators. To achieve this, follow the simple, but important, procedures listed below each time the equipment is used. * After each dive, the regulator should be rinsed as soon as possible in fresh water at a temperature of 20ºC+ or -5ºC to remove deposits of salt or other matter. The recommended method is to fit the regulator to a charged cylinder, to open the cylinder valve & rinse the whole assembly in fresh water at ambient temperature. Ensure that the water penetrates the compensation holes of the first stage if any, & the mouthpiece & front cover holes of the 2nd stage. During rinsing, press several times on the second stage purge button. To dry the regulator, press on the purge button while pointing the mouthpiece downward. Refit the dust cap under pressure. This could allow water to enter the MP hose. Rinsing the regulator in fresh water at the temperature listed above is more effective at removing salt or calcareous deposits than rinsing in cold water. If a charged cylinder is not available, follow the same procedure but avoid pressing the purge button or removing the dust cap during rinsing as this could allow water to enter the regulator and cause internal corrosion. When cleaning LEGEND regulators, the first stage compensation chamber cannot be rinsed as it is sealed. In this case, it is sufficient to rinse the exterior of the first stage thoroughly and to rinse the second stage. * After each day s diving, the regulator should be cleaned, checked and prepared either for the next use, or for extended storage. As soon as the regulator has been removed from the cylinder, refit the dust cap on the first stage HP (high pressure) inlet fitting. This cap is usually attached to the first stage and consequently remains attached to the regulator during the dive. Make sure it s completely dry before fitting it back on the regulator s inlet fitting. If the dust cap is fitted with an O-ring, check that it s in place. * Dry the regulator to avoid any calcareous deposits. Once dried, * The air flow is adjusted by moving the control lever. Place a finger on the end of the lever and move it within the radius indicated. When in MAX position, the air flow is directed straight towards the diver s mouth for a maximum breathing comfort during the dive. * While on the surface, the lever should be in MIN position, to avoid any tendency of free flow. To benefit from the maximum breathing performance, the user should move the lever to MAX position as soon as he begins to dive. Adjusting the Breathing Sensitivity * HARDER: To make breathing harder, turn the knob clockwise * SOFTER: To make breathing softer, turn the knob anti-clockwise (see diagram at top of page) put it into a clean box, or a bag. * If a more thorough cleaning is necessary, follow this procedure: - Rinse the equipment carefully as described above. - Using a soft nylon brush and soapy water, clean the exposed parts of the second stage. Do not soak for more than 5 minutes. - Rinse the equipment again, as described above, to remove all traces of soapy water. * Never use solvents to clean the regulator. Never use an aerosol silicone spray to lubricate it, as certain propellants attack and damage certain rubber and plastic parts. * Do not use your regulator as a carrying handle for your cylinder. Also, protect your regulator from impacts. * Do not leave your regulator attached to a cylinder when not in use. * Lightly lubricate the yoke screw with silicone grease. B. Periodic Care * Don t think your regulator is in good condition just because it hasn t been used often. Prolonged storage or storage under bad conditions can cause internal corrosion and / or deterioration of the seals. * The frequency will depend on the number of dives and the conditions of use. In any case, Aqua Lung recommends servicing at least once a year to maintain the equipment in optimum working order. In fact, certain parts should be replaced at regular intervals. Only original manufacturer s parts should be used in servicing the regulator. If it is used for rental or in very salty conditions, chlorinated pool or polluted water, it should be cleaned and serviced every 3 to 6 months. * The filter found in the first stage HP inlet fitting should be checked regularly. If this filter is coloured or corroded, the regulator should be thoroughly checked and the filter should be replaced, along with any other seals or components which are not reusable. A deposit of rust or aluminium oxide (grey powder) on the filter indicates that water has entered the cylinder, causing internal corrosion. In this case, the cylinder should be inspected by a specialist, cleaned and re-tested if necessary. Storage After rinsing, draining and drying (see Regular Care, above), lightly grease the yoke screw and store the regulator in a clean box, or a bag. Heat, light and humidity are the enemies of the regulator. For off-season storage, keep the regulator in a cool, dark place.

[see pg x for more details] Cracking Resistance Control adjusts the inhalation effort required to crack the poppet valve which releases air into the demand valve. Adjustments can be made during the dive to suit individual needs. [see pg x for more details] Plotting High Performance Regulator performance is calculated by plotting and recording the breathing cycle. In the diagram below, the inhalation line begins on the right hand and runs across the bottom to the left. The first oscillation (termed the cracking spike) represents the effort required to initially open the valve and begin air delivery. Even at this testing depth the graph shows the low Work of Breathing (WOB), indicating the diver is expending almost no energy in maintaining air flow. The cycle continues & the upper line (left to right) represents the Work Of Breathing whilst exhaling (which is greater due to increased gas density at depth). The total Work Of Breathing is calculated by measuring the total area within the loop, which in this case is 1.05 Joules per Litre. To qualify for the CE (Central European) mark, regulators must be less than 3.0 J/L at 50 metres, RMV: 62.5 (25L x 25 Breaths/min), and for the US Navy Group A (the world s most severe test standard) the regulators WOB needs to be less than 1.4 J/L at 62 metres. Versatile design Plotting High Performance Regulator performance is calculated by plotting and recording the breathing cycle. In the diagram below, the inhalation line begins on the right hand and runs across the bottom to the left. The first oscillation (termed the cracking spike) represents the effort required to initially open the valve and begin air delivery. Even at this testing depth the graph shows the low Work of Breathing (WOB), indicating the diver is expending almost no energy in maintaining air flow. The cycle continues and the upper line (left to right) represents the Work Of Breathing whilst exhaling (which is greater due to increased gas density at depth). The total Work Of Breathing is calculated by measuring the total area within the loop, which in this case is 1.05 Joules per Litre. 11 BCD s: Buyer s Guide Before the advent of the BCD, divers found neutral buoyancy to be a fleeting experience; difficult to achieve and nearly impossible to maintain throughout the course of a dive. Yet it is only by becoming neutrally buoyant that a diver can experience the exhilaration of true weightlessness, and move about with total freedom underwater. How the BCD started The BCD, as we know it today, is very different from the original models that were adopted from the Mae West, a vest that was designed to be an inflatable life preserver for airplane pilots during World War II. Its purpose then, for divers who began using it, was simply to provide surface flotation at the beginning or end of a dive, or a means of self-rescue for an injured or disabled diver. Very soon, however, divers began to experiment with this new device, and found that by adding air to it underwater, they could offset the loss of buoyancy that occurred at depth when their wetsuits became more compressed. A revolution was born, but it was one that took many years to evolve into the BCD as it is designed today. With the advent of the power inflator, the BCD underwent a dramatic transformation in a short period of time. The jacket-style design was born, which integrated the BCD into a complete system that included the cylinder and regulator, and could be donned or removed all at once. In addition to providing a more comfortable harness system to hold the cylinder, modern design provides a balanced distribution of the air inside its bladder. This gives the diver the ability to swim underwater or rest on the surface in an equally comfortable and relaxed position, without struggling against buoyancy that pulls them in only one direction. SeaQuest have been pre-eminent in the design of the BCD. They invented the (Advanced Design Vest) ADV which is the basis of modern BED's. SeaQuest hold several important patents to this day. The BCD is a critical component of your safety and comfort. It has to be reliable through thousands of inflations and deflations, be able to withstand being dragged across rocks and reef, as well as being exposed to sand, salt and sun. It must be tough, reliable and a good fit. After studying the following information, you should be able to make an informed decision. The type of exposure suit you will be wearing, and your body shape are two factors you need to consider in selecting your BCD. Most importantly, however, you should consider the type of diving you will be doing and the activities you may wish to pursue. If you ll primarily be travelling to warm water destinations or casual recreational diving, you may be happiest with a more basic & streamlined model that is lightweight and easy to pack for the trip. When choosing a BCD, there are many optional features to consider, and it is important to understand the benefits before making a purchase. Choosing the Right Material The word denier is often used as a measurement of fabric quality. However, it refers to the weight of the thread, not the quality of the woven material. There are plenty of cheap 1000 denier fabrics available, but few that meet the rigid specifications that companies like SeaQuest require. The Tank Band System Here s how to thread the Tank Band System to most BED's. 1. Start with the metal bale as close to the pack frame as possible. This provides the greatest range of adjustment. 2. With the buckle fully open, thread the cylinder band up the middle slot & back down through the slot Pictured left: The Pro- Unlimited Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) closest to the metal bale (Figure 1 & 3). Pull the end to increase the tension in the band. 3. Close the buckle halfway to prevent the webbing from slipping and thread the webbing through the open slot in the end of the buckle (Figure 2 & 3). Which BCD suits you? Many BED's may look fine on the display stand but there are thousands of short cuts that can be taken in the construction of a BCD. 4

12 BCD s 13 While thread weight may be a factor in durability, it s far less important than the thickness of the urethane coating on the inside. This is used to ultrasonically weld the material to provide an airtight seal. This internal coating also helps to protect against internal salt crystal abrasion, which may damage the air D-rings cell. Beware of fabrics claiming to stretch like a balloon as this Shoulder puts lots of strain on the seams Pull Dump & the urethane coating. There are better ways to provide additional buoyancy. The quality of the exterior fabric, rather than just the weight of Adjustable the thread, should also be Chest Strap taken into consideration. Armorshield Cordura, an exclusive SeaQuest fabric, is 7 times more durable than standard nylon & 14 times more durable than cotton. It s lightweight, very resistant to punctures & tears, and quick drying. There are many brightcoloured BED's available that look great until they are put in the field. Most of these colours will fade quickly after repeated exposure to salt and sun. The dye actually provides protection from ultraviolet light. Once the fabric fades further degradation will occur more quickly. That s Weightdump System Adjustable Waist Band one reason why many of the top manufacturers have learned to restrict the use and location of bright colours. The best fabric in the world used by BCD manufacturers for colour fastness and durability is Armorshield Cordura. It uses a special system called colour lock. There are three different levels at which a fabric can be dyed. make their own inflator. They will look and feel inferior. A wellcontrolled rapid inflation can be a critical safety factor. In an emergency you want your inflator to work quickly and well. It eliminates one hose while keeping the Octopus in an easy-to-find location. High Lift At greater depths additional wetsuit compression makes the need for high lift capacity very important. It is also important to give divers added security at the surface. Extra lift capacity is critical for those who regularly train divers or may be required to assist another diver. SeaQuest uses a number of innovations, such as a 3D air cell gusset to give extra lift without squeeze. Powerline Inflator Expanding Internal Gusset Deflated Internal Gusset The cheapest way is to dye the completed fabric, but a far better way is to dye the thread. Armorshield uses thread whose raw component materials are dyed with the final colour. This is what allows SeaQuest to advertise that its BED's fade to black in other words the colour is literally locked in. When deflated, gusset lies flat & streamlined Expanded Internal Gusset Inflation Systems A good measure of a BCD is its inflation system. Take a close look at the BCD s power inflator. 13 Tank Traction System One simple yet extremely important feature is the tank traction system. This rubberised insert compresses when the tank band is initially tightened. Under load and when wet, the tank band will stretch, the traction system expands to take up the slack and ensures the tank is firmly attached to the BCD. Releasable Weight Pouches It s one thing to make a great BCD, it s another to consistently maintain the highest quality. Quality testing costs money. It s an easy way for ordinary BCD manufacturers to cut corners. 14 BCD Load Management System The SeaQuest load management system is a patented combination of features that work in concert to deliver comfort, safety and security. While each of the features below work independently to ensure comfort, together the effect is nothing short of revolutionary. The high-end BED's have all the elements of the load management system. Independent Air Cell System In many BED's the adjustments to hold the tank securely to your back are joined to the air cell. Tightening the shoulder adjustment and cummerbund pulls the air cell tight around your body so that when you inflate the BCD it will become uncomfortable. To compensate for this it is natural to loosen the straps on the BCD. On land the tank will then hang low, placing strain on your lower back. Underwater it will flop around and on the water s surface it will ride up around your ears. The Independent Air Cell System eliminates any discomfort. A separate harness is locked into the back pack and attaches to the air cell by a system of clips and a floating lobe strap system. This allows the air cell to expand away from the harness, giving full inflation while securing the cylinder firmly without squeeze. Ask your dealer for a demonstration. Small, flat back packs, particularly on larger BED's, act as a fulcrum, creating a gap between the lower back and the lower portion of the tank, putting excessive strain on the lower back. The contour pack is curved to the shape of the cylinder. SeaQuest uses 2 different sizes of a Contour Back Pack to get the best stability. From medium-large sizes and up they use an extra large back pack and an extended back pack on the other sizes. Sculptured Shoulder and Pivot Buckles The final link in the load management harness system is a combination of patented swivel buckles and sculptured shoulders. The shoulders are heavily padded for extra comfort & the sculptured insert holds the shoulders shape so the BCD is easy to don. Shoulders, where the air cell and harness meet, are contoured for excellent positioning on the body while allowing the air cell to inflate without discomfort. 25 Rebreathers D rager rebreathers take diving to a new and exciting level, where the gurgle of exhaust bubbles is gone, leaving the serene silence of the underwater world. The Drager units featured here are rebreathers, where nitrox mixture is rebreathed after it has gone through a circular path of CO2 absorption followed by nitrox re-enrichment. In this semiclosed circuit there is optimal reuse of exhaled gas. This means there is minimal gas to expel so fewer bubbles. Your mixed gas cylinder could last you a whole weekend of diving, as your breathing gas usage can drop by up to 90%, when compared to open-circuit scuba equipment. The process of CO2 elimination heats and moisturizes the gas the diver breathes, resulting in greater comfort. By construction and design a Drager rebreather is also considerably lighter than standard scuba equipment. The combined result of these differences is simply startling. The diver is immersed in a peaceful, quiet world. Sea creatures are noticeably less intimidated. The air is moist and warm, much like rainforest air. There is increased freedom of movement and comfort. Drager lets the diver blend gently and silently into the underwater world. It s how it should be. Dolphin Rebreather The Dolphin is a recreational semi-closed re-breather with constant gas flow and a bypass for additional demand supply. The CO2 is absorbed via the scrubber canister. The Dolphin is limited to a depth of 40m (130 feet) with optional 32% O2 dosage insert. DragerRay Lighter than the Dolphin, the DragerRay is a semi-closed rebreather. It provides constant gas, and bypass for additional gas demand, and CO2absorption through the in-built scrubber canister. 26 Gauges/Computers Computers 27 There are three very good reasons to purchase a quality dive computer. Firstly, used properly, a dive computer will greatly increase diver safety by reducing the risk of decompression sickness. They do this by calculating complex decompression algorithms and provide the diver with the best possible information. Ideally, the computer should have three modes: air, nitrox and gauge.the Air mode should accommodate for use with standard air only, the Nitrox mode for use with up to three nitrox mixes containing 21-99% oxygen and the Gauge mode for use as a simple bottom-timer. The second reason to own a good dive computer is because they do all the complex calculations, you are free to concentrate on your diving, which will make your time under the water more enjoyable. The third and final reason to invest in a good quality dive computer is because they give you more bottom time with increased safety. There are four vital safety elements to consider when choosing a computer. 1. Does it use microbubble technology to calculate decompression? 2. Does it offer continuous decompression? 3. Does it offer a multi-step ascent rate? 4. What about personal adjustment? Calculating Decompression? Calculating Decompression The most accurate method of calculating decompression is by using the Suunto RGBM. The Suunto RGBM (Reduced Gradient Bubble Model) is used in the Vyper, Stinger, Vytec, Mosquito and the Cobra models of dive computer. In essence, the Suunto RGBM is an advanced algorithm for tracking both dissolved and free gas in the blood and tissues of divers. The advantage of the Suunto RGBM is that it can address a number of diving circumstances outside the range of just-dissolved gas models by, for example, monitoring continuous multi-day diving, computing closely spaced repetitive diving and taking into account adverse dives deeper than the previous dive. Why is RGBM so important? The traditional approach to decompression theory is referred to as multi-tissue, based upon the research of the pioneer of diving medicine, Professor J S Haldane. The Suunto Mosquito The now famous Doppler testing found that micro-bubbles exist in our body when we dive. The key to avoiding decompression sickness is to keep the bubbles small enough so that they can travel through all tissue compartments. The Reduced Gradient Bubble Model, the most advanced table available to minimise growth of micro-bubbles is the safest system available. What about ascent rate? Many companies still use outdated variable ascent rates, ie: the computer allows you to ascend faster at deeper depths. More recent testing and research by Suunto has established a slower ascent rate. This offers both a greater chance of eliminating microbubbles of nitrogen through normal exchange in the lungs, and less chance of these bubbles reaching a damaging size. As a result of extensive research, Suunto has applied the principle of a single slow ascent rate of 10 metres/min. In order to aid in maintaining a slow ascent rate Suunto uses a multi-step ascent rate meter on all models. This pic is a repeat. I must be replaced by info on D9 model Despite the fact that his research is over 100 years old, it s still the basis for the most commonly used dive tables such as the US Navy and Bhulmann, & thus the basis for most dive computers today. These traditional tables break the body into sections, which can absorb and eliminate nitrogen at different rates. These are called tissue compartments. (eg blood, bone, muscles and organs). Modern research by Suunto and the renowned Bruce R. Wienke has shown a different approach significantly improves diver safety.

27 Continuous Decompression Continuous decompression is the ability to measure and calculate, in real time, the optimum depth for decompression. Since the calculation is updated at very short intervals, the diver is guided to the surface in numerous short stops. The sets of ideal decompression depths tend towards an exponential curve, which represents the function governing tissue nitrogen absorption & elimination. Combined with a controlled ascent rate, it is one of the most natural decompression methods known today. What else? Other desirable features to consider are: safety stop countdown, preset alarms with automatic backlight activation, adjustable profile memory sampling rate and bookmarks. Of course it should be a very good watch, incorporating complete calendar clock functions, dual time, daily alarm and a stopwatch with elapsed time and split-time measurement. The ability to create personal settings through adjustment options give more versatility and safety to the diver. The Cobra, Mosquito, Stinger, Vyper and the Vytec feature a high-definition electroluminescent display which can be adjusted to be on for 5 to 30 seconds, or turn on automatically when an important alarm is given. Finally, most of the top line models offer a feature that they call The Interactive Advisory System. Uploading a dive profile to a PC Most of the top line computers offer this feature which is an intuitive menu system much like a mobile phone read-out. It makes life substantially easier. Can I interface my dive computer with my PC? Being able to download dive profiles is becoming increasingly popular among divers. Suunto introduced the first PC interface in 1989 and has held the lead in this area ever since. What s Gas Switching? Gas switching is as it sounds, switching gas mixtures while under the surface. Practised by only very capable divers, but becoming increasingly popular, gas switching can increase bottom time and decrease decompression time significantly. Clearly, this exercise would require an advanced dive computer. The Suunto Vytec is up to the challenge. When in Nitrox mode the user can preset up to three different gas-mixes containing 21-99% oxygen. Preferred gas mixes can be stored as default (e.g. EAN32, EAN50, EAN99), and be set ON or OFF for each dive, or modified as needed. The Suunto Vytec provides easy and reliable gas switching between enabled gases during the dive. The Suunto Vytec The large memory capacity of the Suunto dive computers allows you to transfer data dive profile, maximum depth, temperatures, air consumption and nitrox information directly from your dive computer to your PC at home or your laptop on board. What about memory? Memory is important. You ll need to choose a computer with sufficient memory to cover you for your dive period. All of the computers in the following pages have logbook and history memory. However, the Spyder, Cobra, Vyper, Mosquito, Stinger and Vytec store up to 36 hours of detailed dive information that can be either viewed on the screen, or downloaded to your PC. In fact, some of these computers even allow you to set the sampling rate (the interval it takes a reading, either 60, 30, 20 or 10 seconds). These days, very good. In days gone by cameras, strobes and other divers gauges interfered with the crude wireless technology of the gauge. This meant they weren t that accurate or, subsequently, popular. Now, thanks to developments from Suunto, wireless technology is accurate and dependable, and becoming increasingly popular with divers who seek a more streamlined system. The Suunto Vytec comes with an optional wireless pressure transmitter that can easily be attached to the high-pressure port. How good is wireless technology? The wireless operation can easily be enabled or disabled in the Vytec s settings. With the wireless transmission enabled, the Vytec displays tank pressure and calculates remaining air time based on current gas consumption. 32 What causes Decompression Illness? Air consists roughly of 78% Nitrogen (N2), 21% Oxygen(O2) & 1% Argon (Ar), Carbon Dioxide (CO2) & other trace gases. When we scuba dive, we metabolise the oxygen, but as Nitrogen is an inert gas, it s stored in the body just like the unseen gas in an unopened bottle of soda water. It all starts in the lungs, where the N2 is first diffused through the alveolar and capillary membranes, into solution in the blood. This N2-rich blood is then distributed by the arteries to the various tissues throughout the body. This is called on-gassing. In decompression modelling, these tissues are commonly called compartments. The deeper and longer we dive, the more N2 is taken up by the body until a tissue finally reaches a point of saturation. When one dives, tissues saturate with N2 at different rates. This is determined by the blood flow rate to the tissue in question. The brain, for example, has a very good blood supply, and is classified as fast tissue, while joints typically have a poor blood supply and are rated as slow tissue. There are several others in between. The length of time that it takes for a tissue to reach 50% saturation level at depth is called the tissue half time and is usually measured in minutes. During ascent, the process is reversed, and the gas is off-loaded from the tissues back into the blood supply. This blood is then The Suunto Deep Stop RGBM algorithm Suunto s new RGBM algorithm takes the effects of free gas into consideration. Classical Haldane-type decompression calculation assumes that all gas is dissolved into the tissues, and remains dissolved as long as the maximum tissue tensions are not exceeded. Bubbles are assumed to form only when the Classical Haldane ascent rate or the m- values are exceeded. As the pressure gradient is invertedly proportional to the surrounding pressure, the diver is brought as shallow as possible, as fast as possible, in order to maximise offgassing. Doppler-studies however show that microbubbles are present on all dives. Therefore the effects of free gas need also to be considered in decompression calculation. The Suunto RGBM was designed to protect Suunto RGBM the recreational diver from the effects of micro-bubble build-up. It incorporates a bubble-factor based tracking system to adapt the decompression SUUNTO RGBM Computers & Gauges 33 returned via the heart to the lungs where the excess N2 & CO2 diffuses out through the alveoli in the lungs, and is exhaled. This process is known as off-gassing. The extent to which a tissue off-gases is determined by the pressure gradient (the difference between the tissue gas & the ambient pressure). There is a further important factor called the oxygen window. This is a naturally occurring gas tension reduction that arises in the actual tissues & venous circulation compared to the lungs & arterial circulation. This leaves room for expanding gas, caused by the ascent, to go without exceeding the ambient pressure, provided one doe not exceed a suitable ascent rate. Suunto s designed ascent rate of 10m/minutes takes full advantage of this phenomenon. The potential for decompression illness occurs when the ambient pressure reduction during ascent is too fast, & some of the excess N2 in the body is released from solution to form bubbles. These bubbles may then interfere with normal body functions, restricting blood flow & causing damage to tissues & nerves.for a diver with decompression illness, the symptoms may start while still underwater, or it may take several hours after surfacing. In some cases the symptoms may not show for several days. requirement based on conducted dive profiles. The maximum ascent rate is set to 10m/min. Continuous decompression provides maximum offgassing and a clean decompression curve. A 3 minute recommended safety stop is added to all dives deeper than 10m. Mandatory Safety sops are added to deal with adverse ascent rate violation. An extended service interval is prompted when microbubbling is present. The Suunto RGBM algorithm increases microbubble suppression on deep dives even further by introducing iterative deep stops. The first deep stop is placed at half the pressure difference between your maximum Suunto Deep Stop RGBM depth and the ceiling depth. Once the deep stop depth is attained, the next deep stop will again be introduced half-way to the ceiling, and so on. Once the ceiling depth is reached, continuous decompression is employed for staging the end of the profile. In the Suunto D9, the user can choose between the familiar Safety Stop providing Suunto RGBM, or the new Deep Stop RGBM.

36 Fins - Technical Features Spring Effect: Rubber is the best possible spring as it works in both compression and tension. During kicking the rubber injected into the ribs accumulates elastic energy which is released at the moment the fins change direction. This increases their reactive force, eliminating dead changeover time making the fin more propulsive and energy efficient.. Layering: Layering of thermoplastic rubber into recessed ribs on the blade of fins provides the best possible spring effect without changing the natural structure of the fin. 42 Neoprene and Shell Suits 43 Shell Suits: How to stay warm underwater W etsuits encase the diver s body with a layer of foam neoprene. The water enters the wetsuit and the body heats the thin layer of water next to the diver s body. The result is that the diver is wet, but warm. However, over time, water circulation draws heat energy away from the diver s body and at depth water pressure reduces the effectiveness of a wetsuit as an insulating device. The answer: a drysuit. A drysuit is a waterproof shell, the sole purpose of which is to keep the diver dry. By itself, it won t keep the diver warm. However, varying layers of insulation can be worn under the drysuit to keep the diver warm. The primary advantage of a drysuit from this perspective is that it allows you to vary your insulation with the needs of the dive. So if you re diving for protracted periods in cold water at depth, chances are you will be cold in a wetsuit. A drysuit is a significant investment, one that you ll expect to last for many dives. So it pays to invest in a high-quality suit. Putting features like kneepads, boots and zippers aside for a moment, the main thing to consider when choosing a drysuit is how its component material is made. Nearly all drysuits are made from foam neoprene. Some manufacturers use compressed neoprene while the better manufacturers use crushed. Crushed neoprene is significantly superior. As the name implies, crushed neoprene is foam neoprene crushed, making the neoprene tougher, more flexible, and more comfortable then any foam neoprene on the market. How to choose a drysuit The colder the water, and the deeper the dive, the more clothes you can wear under the drysuit. If this happens to your drysuit, your drysuit is now a wetsuit. And once this starts happening, your drysuit will never be dry again. Diving Unlimited International (DUI) invented the crushed neoprene process and called it CF200. Since that time, CF200 material has been the standard by which all other drysuits are measured. To make a CF200 drysuit they first build the suit and then put it under a precise amount of pressure, for a precise amount of time and at a precise temperature. This crushes all of the cells. The cells do not rupture; instead the cell membranes flatten against one another. A good example of why foam neoprene (also often called compressed neoprene) doesn t make a good drysuit is look at your old wetsuit. You ll notice that the knees and elbows get mushy. This is from the impact of your knees against a hard surface. Repeated impact, which is common to most dives, ruptures the cells inside. The cells eventually rupture into one another. This ensures your DUI CF200 will not change thickness at depth and, bottom line, your CF200 material will far outlast any compressed neoprene on the drysuit market. 46 Knives Types of Steel used for Knives 316 Series Stainless A special blend of metals which offers the highest resistance to rust, this softer metal with a lower carbon content has a Rockwell B hardness of It can be sharpened to a good edge but will not hold the edge as long as harder steels. Since 316 is a comparatively soft metal it is not ideal for prying purposes but for active divers who cannot always rinse and maintain their gear, the 316 Series knives are recommended. All knives constructed of this material are guaranteed not to rust. 420 Series Stainless A fairly hard steel which has good overall characteristics and a Rockwell C hardness of 54 56, it can be expected to hold a sharp edge reasonably well. The tensile strength is high making 420 better for light prying applications. Due to the higher carbon content, unpolished areas may sometimes rust when exposed to salt water. To prevent rust the blade must be rinsed with fresh water and dried after each use and a protective oil coating applied.
