16 SCUBAPRO FIRST AND SECOND STAGE REGULATORS SCUBAPRO FIRST STAGE REGULATORS The task of the fi rst stage of a regulator system is quite simple: reduce high pressure air coming from the tank to a consistent intermediate pressure. First stage regulators are divided into piston and diaphragm categories, depending on the mechanism used to control the valve allowing air to fl ow to the second stage. Piston fi rst stages can be further classifi ed between balanced and classic downstream piston design, with specifi c function and performance of the fi rst stage related to pressure changes in the tank. SCUBAPRO PISTON TECHNOLOGY The general advantage of a piston fi rst stage lies in its reliability and reduced maintenance requirements, due to an effective but simpler mechanism with less moving parts. More importantly, no other design can reach the high air delivery rate of a balanced piston controlled fi rst stage. Air-balanced flow-through piston - First stages with air-balanced pistons deliver signifi cantly more air to the second stage than any other fi rst stage, plus their performance is totally unaffected by changing tank pressure. A balanced piston allows the use of lighter and more sensitive components, resulting in ultra fast breathing response, instant delivery of air on demand, and extra high air fl ow, especially in low tank pressure ranges. When in use, the downstream valve opens in the same direction as the incoming airfl ow. To close the valve and stop the airfl ow, a spring counteracts the force of the incoming air. Therefore, a slight inhalation effort is always required to overcome the spring tension and open the valve. SCUBAPRO R-Series robust and reliable R395 and R295 are examples of this design. ADJUSTABLE SECOND STAGE REGULATORS The human breathing process is unique and individual rather intuitive and taken for granted at the surface. However, once underwater and dependent on a regulator, we suddenly realize how uniquely we breathe, and how important a regulator can be. The harsher the diving conditions, the higher the fl exibility and response we demand from a second stage regulator. This is why SCUBAPRO has implemented diver-adjustable functions on many of our second stage regulators. Diver-adjustable inhalation effort - This feature enables the diver to adjust breathing effort via an oversized control knob. It is available on the A700, S600 and G250V second stages. All other second stages feature a pre-set inhalation effort that suits the most common diving conditions and can be fi ne-tuned at an Authorised SCUBAPRO Dealer on request. Venturi-Initiated Vacuum Assist (VIVA) - Another SCUBAPRO patented feature, VIVA is available on all SCUBAPRO second stages. VIVA uses the power of a vacuum assist to reduce work of breathing and increase breathing comfort. It is diver adjustable on all current SCUBAPRO second stages except the R295, which is intentionally designed for diver training courses, rental facilities, and divers demanding ready-to-use equipment. A VIVA in MAX position gives powerful breathing support on every single breath. A VIVA in MIN position helps prevent free fl ow on the surface, ideal for training, buddy breathing, in currents, or when used as an octopus.

17 REGULATORS COMFORT, DESIGN AND CONVENIENCE FEATURES A regulator should be considered truly comfortable only when you nearly forget you are using one. Characteristics such as natural and low-effort breathing behaviour, minimum fl ow resistance, drag of the second stage while swimming, freedom of movement and overall low effort contribute to enhancing comfort. Below are some key comfort features of SCUBAPRO regulators. Orthodontic mouthpiece - SCUBAPRO uses a comfortable orthodontic mouthpiece on every second stage to reduce jaw fatigue and gum irritation. 26 UWATEC INNOVATION AND CORE TECHNOLOGY UWATEC has set the standard in the industry, signifi cantly promoting and evolving the use of diving computers throughout the years, with the introduction of numerous innovative computers and instruments. The Aladin family is the most complete offer for recreational diving. With a friendly round shape, it is the ideal computer to accompany divers through the different steps of their experience and levels of diving certifi cation. The Galileo platform is our most recent state-of-the-art breakthrough and delivers the future of diving today. Galileo by UWATEC is as revolutionary for diving as Galileo Galilei s discoveries were for XVIIth century science. And science is the essence of Galileo. ADAPTIVE TECHNOLOGY BÜHLMANN ZH-L8 ADT (ADAPTIVE) ALGORITHM Intuitive and innovative, adaptive computers from UWATEC are a step ahead of standard computers. Using the Bühlmann ZH-L8 ADT mathematical algorithm, these computers adapt to diver behaviours and environmental conditions, accounting for such variables as workload, water temperature, ascent rate, even pulmonary shunt during surface intervals. MICROBUBBLE MANAGEMENT BÜHLMANN ZH-L8 ADT MB (ADAPTIVE MICROBUBBLE) ALGORITHM This variation of the Bühlmann algorithm enables divers to reduce the effects of microbubble build up. Microbubbles are tiny but potentially highly dangerous bubbles that can build up in a diver s tissues. Often present without visible symptoms, they could damage soft tissues and lead to decompression illness. The ZH-L8 ADT MB algorithm features six diver selectable microbubble suppression levels: from L0 (minimum microbubble reduction corresponding to the UWATEC ZH-L8 ADT algorithm) to L5 (highest degree of microbubble reduction). Divers can program the level of microbubble reduction according to their personal preference and diving environment. In practical terms, the diver will have either shorter nostop times or deeper and longer decompression stops (level stops) than when diving with L0. As a consequence, the body will either take up less nitrogen, or will be able to off-gas more before returning to the surface, therefore reducing the amount of microbubbles present in the body at the end of the dive. MULTI GAS DIVING BÜHLMANN ZH-L8 ADT MB PMG (PREDICTIVE MULTI-GAS) Galileo Sol and Aladin TEC 2G computers feature a predictive multigas algorithm (available as an upgrade on the Galileo Terra), which takes into account all planned gas switches throughout the dive. In the background, the algorithm also calculates the decompression schedule for the currently active gas only, so if you fail to switch to the deco gas at the planned depth, the computer can quickly revert to this calculation. This means the decompression schedule shown on the display gives you the actual total time of ascent. For your convenience, a gas switch is suggested automatically by the computer once you reach the planned switch depth, but the diver must confi rm the switch manually. A switch can also be initiated manually at any time, giving you total fl exibility in the use of the deco gas(es), always with an up-to-date decompression calculation. NITROX COMPATIBILITY All UWATEC dive computers are Nitrox compatible. Nitrox is the term used to describe breathing gases made of oxygen-nitrogen mixes with the oxygen percentage higher than 21%. Because Nitrox contains less nitrogen than air, there is less nitrogen loading on the diver s body at the same depth as compared to breathing air. However, the increase in oxygen concentration in Nitrox implies an increase in oxygen partial pressure (ppo2) in the breathing mix at the same depth, which can have toxic effects on the human body. UWATEC computers keep you safe from these potential negative effects: They have a maximum operating depth alarm alerting divers when the partial pressure of oxygen (ppo2) reaches the maximum allowed level (ppo2max). They track the exposure by means of the Central Nervous System Oxygen (CNS O2) clock. At levels of 100% and higher there is risk of long exposure effects, and consequently an alarm will be activated when this level of CNS O2 is reached. TRUE REMAINING BOTTOM TIME (RBT) CALCULATED WITH GALILEO SOL AND SMART GAS-INTEGRATED COMPUTERS The RBT is the time divers can spend at the current depth before needing to ascend in order to be on the surface with the minimum gas reserve as set in the dive computer (range is bar, default 40bar). Galileo Sol computers calculate the RBT by taking into consideration all parameters which affect the ascent, such as tank pressure, breathing rate, depth, ideal ascending speed, all incurring and upcoming decompression obligations and the set tank reserve. In addition, tank pressure is temperature compensated in order to correctly follow the diver during an ascent through thermoclines. Once all of these factors have been considered, Galileo Sol dive computers calculate the actual RBT, while constantly monitoring each variable and updating the calculation if needed to ensure that the RBT is always accurate. SMART TRAK AND INFRARED TECHNOLOGY Infrared technology allows divers to interface wirelessly and without hassle with a personal computer, for example to download their dive profi les. Smart TRAK is a dedicated software application which lets divers log, organize, analyze and print the details of each dive, taking advantage of the 4-second sampling rate in UWATEC dive computers memory; it also allows for customized dive computer settings, including features and alarms. This powerful, full-color software is supplied with every UWATEC dive computer and is compatible with Windows Vista. 34 BALANCED TECHNOLOGY THREE TYPES OF SCUBAPRO BCS Different needs, various solutions. Here is a quick look at the three types of SCUBAPRO BCs. Front-adjustable jackets - Front-adjustable jackets allow variations of fi t, regardless of the thickness of suit worn. Quick-release adjustable shoulder buckles make this style of BC very easy to put on and take off, making it popular for training and dive centers and for all levels of recreational divers. A variety of styles and sizes offer a custom-like fi t. Back flotation jackets - Back fl otation jackets are the BCs of choice for divers preferring a totally uncluttered chest area. The design positions the air bladder on the sides of the tank, rather than under the arms or over the shoulders of the diver. SCUBAPRO integrates this design with a back fl otation harness that provides superior load carrying technology designed for increased comfort on prolonged or repeated dives. Underwater, it helps the diver automatically attain a horizontal fl oating position. Stabilizing jackets - Stabilizing jackets were invented by SCUBAPRO. They feature the most harmonious buoyancy control of all by utilizing unrestricted internal passageways to allow air to fl ow continuously throughout the jacket and accumulate at the highest point. The diver is surrounded by this bubble and moves easily and precisely underwater. On the surface, it supports a comfortable and relaxed face up fl oating position. DESIGNED TO LAST A robust jacket is highly resistant to punctures and abrasion, and carries heavy load tanks without compromising longevity and comfort. SCUBAPRO achieves this by using the best materials, reinforcements and seam constructions. Materials and reinforcements - The core bladders of our BCs are made with Cordura 500 or Polyester and nylon are then selectively chosen to reinforce the most exposed areas of our BCs. Seam construction - SCUBAPRO was the fi rst manufacturer to use a high-tech method of welding to achieve a fl awless seal on all jackets made from polyurethane-backed nylon. The use of highpower radio waves bonds the polyurethane material, resulting in a very strong and long-lasting seam. DESIGNED FOR COMFORT AND PEACE OF MIND A comfortable jacket disperses the tank load evenly to the diver s hip area away from chest and shoulders and offers soft interior padding. It conforms securely to the diver s body to minimize drag and provide a nonrestrictive fi t around shoulders and waist. Integrated weight system - Most SCUBAPRO jackets have an integrated weight system to replace the traditional weight belt. Weights are carried in separate pouches that slip into speciallydesigned pockets at the waist. The pockets are closed and secured with oversized buckles that prevent weight pouches from falling out during the dive. These weight pockets accommodate up to 10kg (5kg each), which is usually suffi cient weight for a recreational diver using a wetsuit. Weight integrated pockets help to avoid sore hips and backache, usually caused by weight belts, and are easy to handle even with thick gloves. Trim weight - In most jackets, rear trim pockets are located on both sides of the tank and hold at least 1,5kg of non-releasable weights each. Together with front pocket weights, they optimize diver s trim and adjust to varying equipment confi gurations and diving conditions. 35 BUOYANCY COMPENSATORS DESIGNED FOR SAFETY AND CONTROL A safe jacket enables you to react quickly to changing conditions while providing suffi cient lift capacity. SCUBAPRO BCs achieve this with perfectly-positioned air release valves (dump valves) reachable and effective in any position. The diver can add the right amount of air instantly upon demand using the SCUBAPRO BPI (Balanced Power Infl ator) or the optional AIR2. These features ensure stability and facilitate precise changes in underwater body position. Dump valves - Because divers are not always in an upright position when they need to vent air, SCUBAPRO jackets feature several dump valves at different positions: on the right shoulder, equipped with an easy to fi nd lanyard handle; on the left shoulder, integrated in the corrugated hose; in the rear at waist level, for a diver in a headdown position. BPI (Balanced Power Inflator) and AIR2 - The compact SCUBAPRO BPI infl ates and defl ates at the touch of a button. It features special soft-touch, ergonomically shaped buttons for a good grip and easy, one hand operation with gloves. All of our jackets come standard with a BPI and a medium pressure hose. A SCUBAPRO medium pressure hose gives fl exibility regardless of water temperature changes, guaranteeing maximum fl ow and resistance. AIR2 is more than a simple infl ator. Its components design takes advantage from the best regulator technology to guarantee maximum effi ciency and reliability. As an infl ator AIR2 provides perfect pressure control for a great buoyancy management. Ergonomic shape makes it easy-to-handle in any circumstance, it can be automatically emptied by simply pressing the exhaust button. Lift capacity - All jackets need a minimum internal volume to allow suffi cient air to be injected inside to reach neutral buoyancy, and when needed to create lift for ascent and fl otation on the surface. This is an important comfort and safety issue. A jacket also needs to be streamlined to reduce drag in order to save energy when swimming.
