6 PLUGGING MACHINE The heavy built diamond tooled drill press is especially designed to drill in various size core samples. The standard machine comes with a floor standing drill press, a rotary union, a coolant feeding system, a coolant recovery pan with splash guard and a core clamping vise. The union permits to connect the coring bit to the drill press and feed coolant to the coring bit. The vise assembly can be mounted on the pan table and allows for the positioning of the core. Various sizes of coring bits as well as the recirculating coolant system are available. 7 AUTOMATED PLUGGING MACHINE The heavy built diamond tooled drill press is especially designed to drill in various size core samples with an automatic, variable force, constant pressure feed. A constant pressure feed enables the coring bit to drill fast in soft rock, but the rate of advance will automatically slow down in harder rock. The constant pressure feed uses a hydraulic actuator for smooth operation at low rates of advance. The rapid-retract position brings the coring bit out of the rock to a position that will allow removal of the plug from the bit. The coring operation can be performed using water/oil coolant or optionally Liquid nitrogen for unconsolidated samples. The core clamping assembly is mounted on the pan table. An XY table allows for positioning the pan at the right position before drilling the core sample. The head of the drill press can be titled in order to drill the sample in vertical or inclined position. 11 TRIMMING SAW Bench top tool designed to cut preset core sample lengths. The preset sample lengths can be adjusted at any time by rearranging machined spacers to the desired length between the blades. The quality of the saw blade allows for extreme precision of the end face after trimming of inch (5/100 mm). All wetted components are constructed from stainless steel and anodized aluminium for long lasting corrosion free operation. All bearings are sealed to insure long lasting free movement. 16 UNCONSOLIDATED CORE MOUNTING SYSTEM The unconsolidated core mounting system is designed to mount friable or unconsolidated core material into a heat shrinkable Teflon tubing with dual end screens. The system includes a hydraulic operated core punch for placing the punched core material into a heat shrink tubing. The second step consists of applying a small controlled axial force on the core material contained in the tubing to improve cohesion of the sediment. 17 CENTRIFUGAL EXTRACTOR The centrifugal extractor is designed to spray warm, clean solvent from a still against the core samples. The centrifugal force causes solvent to flow through samples displacing and extracting the oil (and water). The speed of rotation can be selected depending on the permeability and degree of consolidation of the core. Most common solvents can be used. A solvent recovery still is also provided to recycle clean and warm solvent into the centrifugal extractor in closed loop. 18 CO 2 SOLVENT CORE CLEANER (CSC 70) The core Cleaner is a device for cleaning crude oil, drilling mud liquids, and water from a single piece of whole core or from a batch of core plug samples. The principle consists of filling the gas filled space in the core with solvent (e.g. toluene) by surrounding the core with a suitable solvent containing dissolved CO 2 gas and applying sufficient hydraulic pressure. The solvent mixes with oil in the core and subsequent depressurizing to atmospheric pressure removes residual oil from the core. A number of repeated cycles are required to clean the core of hydrocarbons. The apparatus fits into a standard size floor hood. The cleaning chamber is a pressure vessel which is heated electrically with an electrical heater enclosed in an explosion proof housing. The solvent is pumped from an on-board supply tank to the cleaning vessel with a high pressure pump. A cyclone separator with a stainless steel-packed, water-cooled aftercooler is provided to separate the CO 2 and the used hot solvent when the vessel is drained. The used toluene drains into an explosion proof electric still where it is recovered and delivered back to the clean solvent supply. A coolant bath is provided to recirculate cold water around the cyclone to cool down the hot solvent, thus avoiding large consumption of water. The still operation is automatic. The process controls are housed in a non-explosion proof box intended to be mounted outside of the hood. A touch screen panel allows to operate the machine in manual and fully automated modes. 19 SOXHLET EXTRACTOR The soxhlet distillation extraction method is used to dissolve and extract oil and brine from rock core sample by using solvents. The cleanliness of the sample is determined from the color of the solvent that siphons periodically from the extractor which must be clear. The samples are placed in the extractor and cleaned by refluxing solvent. The solvent is heated and vaporized in boiling flasks and cooled at the top by condenser. The cooled solvent liquid falls into the sample chamber. The cleaned solvent fills the chamber and soaks the core sample. When the chamber is full, the dirty solvent which was used to clean the core siphons back into the boiling flask and is redistilled again The apparatus consists of a distillation/extraction glassware unit and a heating mantle with thermostatic controller. The glassware is composed of boiling flask, soxhlet extractor and condenser. A flexible plastic tubing is also used to connect the condenser to the water cooling unit. All these devices are mounted on a mounting rack. 20 FLOW THROUGH CORE CLEANER The apparatus is a rapid and efficient core cleaning system based on controlled sequential solvent displacement under moderate pressure. Extraction of hydrocarbons and salts from reservoir rocks is achieved by injecting one or more solvents into the core sample under pressure and moderate temperature. The pressure used depends on the sample permeability. The core is considered clean when the effluent is clean. 21 RECOVERY STILL FOR SOLVENT The recovery still is designed to reclaim clean solvent from dirty solvent containing a mixture of crude oil and solvent. The recovery process is based on fractional distillation by boiling point temperature difference between the crude oil and the solvent. The apparatus is explosion proof and should be installed away from any area of hazardous atmosphere. It consists mainly of (a) an insulated boiler tank equipped with heaters located at the bottom and (b) a condenser using house water. The recovered solvent is evacuated into a container whereas the dirty toluene is transferred manually into the tank. The plastic bag located in the tank in which the dirty solvent is poured permits to facilitate the evacuation of sludge deposit after the recovery process. 22 HUMIDITY DRYING OVEN The humidity drying oven is used to dry core samples under constant relative humidity condition; in particular it is very important when the core contains hydratable clays or gypsum. 25 HEATED VACUUM DESSICATOR The vacuum heated dessicator is designed especially to dry a bunch of core samples under vacuum. This operation is required to remove humidity of core samples before gas permeability or porosity measurements. The system includes an heated dessicator and a vacuum pump. The dessicator includes a machined stainless steel heating plate with a glass bell, designed to withstand the pressure difference between in and outside. The sealing is secured by a viton O- ring between the heating plate and the bell. The samples are dried by direct contact with the heating plate. The small volume and the compact design guarantee a short heating time. It is easy and safe to operate, requires hardly any maintenance, and visibility is perfect. 26 MANUAL SATURATOR The manual saturator permits to perform a sequence of vacuum and saturation cycles on plug size samples. The standard apparatus includes a plug sized core cell, a vacuum pump, an hand operated pressure pump (2,000 psi output), a saturant vacuum tank and necessary hand operated valves and plumbing. A larger capacity cell to accommodate full size core samples is also available. 27 AUTOMATED SATURATOR The automated saturator permits to perform a sequence of vacuum, filling and saturation cycles on plug size samples in an automated mode to free the operator for other tasks. The bench top apparatus comes with a plug sized core cell, a vacuum pump, a high pressure liquid pump (2,000 psi output), a saturant vacuum tank and necessary automated valves and plumbing. A larger capacity cell to accommodate full size core samples is also available. The apparatus is controlled by a computer which allows the operator to open or close the valves, start and stop the high pressure pump, the vacuum pump and to run automatic saturation cycles. 28 OVERBURDEN CORE SATURATOR The overburden core saturator enables the end user to obtain remarkable saturation of cleaned and dry core samples under overburden pressure. The core sample is placed in a hydrostatic core holder under overburden pressure and evacuated by applying high vacuum for few hours. The liquid phase is then injected in the core sample using a HPLC pump up to 5,000 psi to assure complete saturation of the core. The same system can be configured with additional core holders if necessary. 33 DEAN STARK EXTRACTOR The dean stark extractor is used to determine fluid saturation of core samples. The sample is first weighed and then introduced into the dean stark extractor. The water fraction is vaporized by boiling solvent, condensed and then collected in a calibrated receiver. Vaporized solvent also condenses, soaks the sample, and extracts the oil. The sample is then oven dried and weighed. The oil content is determined by gravimetric difference while the water content is volumetrically measured by the receiving tube. 34 RETORT OVEN The retort oven is designed to determine oil and water fluid saturation by a high temperature retorting process in which the oil and water contained in a fresh sample of crushed core material are vaporized, condensed and collected in calibrated glassware. The samples are progressively heated to remove water and then heat up to 650 C (1,200 F) to remove oil from the sample. The gas saturation is determined on an adjacent, litho logically similar sample by placing the core sample in a mercury porosimeter and measuring the amount of mercury injected with the water and/or oil in place. The system comprises a retort cabinet containing two chambers of five sample bombs capable of holding crushed core material. Each bomb is equipped with a sealed threaded cap and is connected to a long, stainless steel condensing tube. The tube passes through a water bath thereby enhancing condensation of the evolved gases. 35 GAMMA RAY LOGGER (NGR 200) The NGR200 core gamma ray logger provides both total and spectral analysis of the natural gamma radiations emitted from the core samples upon arrival at the laboratory. It permits to differentiate uranium, thorium and potassium concentrations. The data obtained with this apparatus can be used to adjust the depth of the core to coincide with the open-hole logging depths and to identify zones where core has been lost. The apparatus consists of a conveyer for moving core, lead shielding to reduce background gamma radiation and a suitable gamma ray detector. The detector system consists of a shielded scintillation crystal coupled with a photo multiplier. Signals from the detector are processed using a multi channel spectrum analyzer and analytical software. 36 GEOMETRIC BULK VOLUME METER (GBV) This instrument is designed to measure bulk volume of plug sized and/or full diameter core samples with excellent accuracy. The principle consists of measuring accurately the length and diameter of the samples at different grades. Minimum of 8 measurements along the diameter and one every 50 mm along the length are necessary to get an accurate bulk volume measurement. The bulk volume is determined by integrating those measurements. This calculation can be done by hand or by optional computer program. The apparatus is mainly composed of a pressure and flow module, a core frame module and an injection probe module. Gas is forced to flow under constant pressure through an injection tip pressed against the surface of a permeable sample. Data obtained can be used to calculate capillary pressure versus saturation curves. A high precision weighing balance can be used for core saturation measurement. The multiple sample desaturation cell is manufactured from stainless steel and is equipped at its base with a large ceramic plate used as a semi permeable porous plate. The set up consists of a capillary pressure cell, with an easy opening lid, clamping bolts, o rings seals, outflow tube assemblies and pressure control panel. Three ceramic plates are provided with the systems withstanding each 3 bar, 5 bar and 15 bar pressure. The control panel includes a digital pressure display, two low and high range pressure regulators and a set of control valves. A gas humidifier is also provided to insure minimum evaporation during the desaturation process. 64 CAPILLARY PRESSURE MERCURY SYSTEM (CPM 140) Manual operated system for the measurement of capillary pressure and pore morphology. Based on Purcell method, mercury is injected into plug sized samples at know volume from vacuum to 2,000 psi (140 bar). The instrument uses a hand operated pump for mercury injection and a coreholder equipped with an opening windowed chamber cap for easy loading / unloading operations and mercury level visualization. The control panel includes the pore pressure regulator, the pore pressure transducer with the digital display and a vacuum manometer. 65 DIGITAL CORE PHOTOGRAPHY SYSTEM (DCP) The fully automated core photography system is designed for complete core photography and archiving purposes, producing high quality white and ultraviolet colour images of full diameter whole or slabbed core samples. The operator positions the core samples on a four rows rack and a digital camera mounted above the core samples under white or ultra violet lighting takes a high resolution picture. The images are then automatically digitised, displayed and recorded in the high speed computer. The software includes calibration functions for the camera, image processing capabilities as well as file compression, storage and transfer facilities. The innovative concept is in the use of a digital camera which can produce very high resolution color images up, avoiding the risk of deformed images.
