2 Introduction This Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual (IOM) advises McQuay Service or contractors acting on the behalf of a McQuay Service as to the proper installation of flexible hose when used with rental chillers from McQuay International. Note: The specified hose for use with McQuay Rental Chillers is Angus Super Aquaduct flexible hose in blue. Hose is manufactured by; Kidde Fire Fighting Angus Hose, 180 Sheree Blvd, STE 3900, Exton, PA It is critical that this IOM is followed to minimize premature or catastrophic failure of this hose. McQuay disclaims liability for damages and costs resulting from third party failure to follow the instructions in this bulletin. General Hazard Identification Information DANGER Dangers indicate a hazardous situation that will result in death or serious injury if not avoided. WARNING Warnings indicate potentially hazardous situations, which can result in property damage, severe personal injury, or death if not avoided. CAUTION Cautions indicate potentially hazardous situations, which can result in personal injury or equipment damage if not avoided. Specific Hazard Identification for the procedures in this manual. CAUTION Hose must never be pressurized over 150 psi to avoid damage to the hose. If higher pressures are required, hard pipe must be utilized. WARNING Hose must always be used in a pressurized application. If a negative pressure application is required, hard pipe must be utilized; otherwise hose may collapse, causing total system failure. DANGER These guidelines MUST be followed to avoid leaking, coupling failure, catastrophic hose failure or serious injury or death to workers in the immediate area of the failing pressurized hose. Do not support the hose ONLY by its couplings. Support over half of the hose s length by ground or other supporting surface otherwise coupling clamps may fail. Do not run hose vertically more than 7 feet, otherwise coupling clamps may fail. Do not cut hose to custom fit pieces this will affect the integrity of the hose. Bleed all air from the system prior to pressurizing hose to avoid couplings separating from the hose. IOM 1159 (06/12) 2

3 Installation Guidelines Possible hose rupture at the hose-coupling interface can be avoided with careful installation of the hose. Proper hose installation guidelines that should be followed are: Install elbows for a smooth hose transition on all vertical hose installations. Never exceed a 7' vertical run of hose. Hose must be supported by more than half its total length on the ground. Never have the hose completely supported by the couplings. Never cut hose to "custom" fit lengths. Never pressurize hose above 150 psi. Bleed all air from the system before pressurizing the hose. Horizontal Hookup Application The following figures illustrate the correct and incorrect methods for installing hose in a horizontal hookup application. Figure 1 shows a correct hose installation. In this configuration either a 45 or 90 elbow can be installed. This elbow prevents stretching and crimping of the hose at the hose coupling connection. This elbow also directs the hose to the ground at an appropriate angle to minimize the crimping of the hose at the ground or supporting surfaces. 4 This causes the top of the hose to be in tension, which stretches the hose out of the coupling; and the bottom of the hose to be in compression, which causes it to crimp. It also causes the hose to crimp at the ground. Figure 2 - lncorrect Horizontal Hose Installation Stretching Rental Chiller Crimping Crimping Vertical Hookup Installation The following figures illustrate the correct and incorrect methods for installing hose in a vertical hookup application. Figure 3 shows a correct vertical hose installation. In this configuration, the hose is installed with an elevation less than 7 feet off the ground. A 45 elbow is installed to reduce the stress in the hose coupling connection. This elbow also directs the hose to the ground at an appropriate angle to minimize the crimping of the hose at the ground or supporting surface. IOM 1159 (06/12) 4

In this configuration the hose is installed without an elbow and with an elevation greater than seven feet off the ground. This creates excessive stress at the hose coupling connection, causing the hose to stretch and separate from the coupling. It also causes the hose to crimp at the ground. 6 Combined Horizontal and Vertical Hookup Installation The following figures illustrate the correct and incorrect methods for installing hose in a horizontal and vertical combination. Figure 5 shows a correct vertical/horizontal hose installation. In this configuration, correct installation techniques followed are: the hose is installed with elbows at both connection ends the vertical run of hose is less than 7 feet The hose is adequately supported by more than half its total length on the ground. These items minimize the stretching and separation at the hose-coupling interface and also the crimping of the hose at the ground. In this configuration, a number of improper installation techniques can be noted: elbows are not installed the hose is completely supported by the couplings the vertical run of hose is greater than 7 feet the hose is not adequately supported by the ground These items cause excessive stress to be generated at the hose-coupling interface, causing the hose to stretch and separate from the coupling. The length of unsupported hose should be less than 7 feet. Also, the hose must be adequately supported by having more than half its total length on the ground. 8 Hard Pipe Installation Certain installations may require the use of hard pipe (steel or PVC). Hard pipe is typically recommended for (1) indoor installations, (2) semi-permanent installations (three months or more) and/or (3) installations with space limitations. When installing hard pipe: Construct and install the piping according to local and national codes. Isolate and support the piping as required to prevent stress on the unit and vibration to building piping. Routine Maintenance Care, Maintenance, and Service Test The unique construction features of Angus hose make it virtually maintenance free. However, the following basic care and maintenance tips should be considered. 1. CLEAN UP Although Angus Hose requires no routine washing and drying, it is recommended that accumulations of mud, sand, ash, etc. be rinsed or brushed off. These materials will ultimately find their way to your hose bed floor and could cause future problems. 2. DAMAGE Damaged hose can be dealt with in two ways: Cover damage (cosmetic repair) can be repaired by applying Angus Coverseal to the affected area. Because there is no inner tube, Angus hose will not burst, even if punctured under most circumstances. Punctures, cuts and tears are repaired both inside and out by a unique vulcanizing process that returns the hose to 100% of its annual service test pressure. 3. COUPLINGS Angus grooved couplings require little maintenance; however, we recommend the following: Sand, mud, ash, etc., should be rinsed off after each use. Visual inspection of the seal area will prevent leakage of coupling. 4. ANNUAL HYDROSTATIC SERVICE TESTS All Angus Water Supply and Distribution System components should be hydrostatically tested annually. Hose Test - In accordance with NFPA 1962 (latest edition). Fittings, Appliances and Accessories - All Angus hose, fittings, appliances and accessories are safety tested before leaving the factory. Angus recommends annual testing of all parts of the system to ensure top performance. Test all fittings and appliances to 250 psi for five minutes or to the limits of the relief valve settings. Pressure Rating of Hose Service Test - One third of burst rating of hose. Proof or Acceptance Test - Two thirds of burst rating of hose. Burst Test Example - Hose that has a service test of 250 psi, proof or acceptance of 500 psi and burst of 750 psi. This allows a 3 times safety factor. IOM 1159 (06/12) 8
