WARNING AVOID SERIOUS OR FATAL INJURY!!! OSHA REGULATIONS REQUIRE A (SHUT-OFF OR DEADMAN) REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM BE USED ON ALL ABRASIVE BLAST MACHINES. NEVER OPERATE, RENT OR SELL AN ABRASIVE BLAST CLEANING MACHINE WITHOUT OPERATIONAL REMOTE CONTROLS. 3.3 REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEMS: All Mod-U-Blast vessels are furnished with an operational remote control system attached to the unit when shipped from the factory. Pneumatic and electro pneumatic control systems are available. The pneumatic remote control systems are deadman or shut-off controls which operate as a double line pneumatic circuit. The system consists of a pneumatic remote control switch connected to a dual air control line from the control valve. The system is activated when the operator depresses the switch handle (with safety button in). When in this position, the handle seals off the orifice directly below it and the control air flows back into the return line section of the dual line to open the air control valve inlet and close the control valve outlet. Compressed air seals the pop up valve against the seat gasket and pressurizes the blast vessel. Blasting then begins. The electric remote control systems are deadman or shut-off controls which operate 5

7 as an electrically actuated pneumatic circuit. These systems can be 12 or 120 volt solenoids. Safety features are incorporated into the pneumatic and electric remote control systems to prevent accidental activation of the blast flow. Do not modify, delete, or over-ride components of the system. Such action may cause the system to malfunction. Care must be taken to avoid accidents. Read and abide by all warning decals, danger decals and owner s manual instructions before operating the blast machine. WARNING It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to read and understand all owner s manuals, instructions, literature, labels, specifications, and warnings either sent with or affixed to the product. Additional precautions may be necessary, depending on attachments used and conditions at the work site. The manufacturer has no direct control over abrasive blast cleaning machine application, operation, inspection, or maintenance. Therefore, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to use good safety precautions in these areas. IMPORTANT: If you do not have a Mod-U-Blast owner s manual(s) for your particular Mod-U-Blast abrasive blast cleaning machine and related components, get a replacement manual(s) from your employer, equipment dealer, rental business or Mod- U-Blast Mfg. Pressurize the air supply hose. WORKING AIR PRESSURE SUPPLIED TO THE BLAST MACHINE AND RELATED COMPONENTS MUST NOT EXCEED 100 PSI (689 Kpa). 150 PSI UNITS ARE AVAILABLE FROM MOD-U-BLAST MFG Prepare the blast operator with protective safety equipment including but not limited to a NIOSH approved supplied air respirator, leather gloves, ear protection, safety shoes, and abrasive resistant cover wear Check for air leaks. All air lines and fittings must be inspected. Secure control of the blast hose and nozzle TO START Prior to activating the blast machine, the blasting operator and personnel within the area of the blast site must be equipped within protective safety equipment, including but not limited to, a NIOSH approved supplied air respirator, leather gloves, ear protection, safety shoes, and abrasive resistant cover wear The blast machine operator(s) must have complete control of the blast hose and nozzle before pressurizing the blast machine The remote control (deadman) safety switch must be depressed, then: 11

13 5.4.3 Compressed air entering the machine will seal the pop-up valve against the filler port gasket and pressurize the blast machine. The air blast flow will commence The air stream from the nozzle should have a slight discolouration when viewed against a light source TO STOP Always maintain complete control of the blast hose and nozzle until the blast machine and blast hose are completely depressurized To deactivate the blast machine, release the remote control (deadman) safety switch. The blast machine will depressurize Always be sure that the blast machine and blast hose are completely depressurized before releasing the blast hose SHUT-DOWN/STORAGE To maintain the operating condition of the blast machine, always clean out abrasive remaining in the blast machine. This will eliminate complications caused by moist abrasive in the blast machine Shut off the source of compressed air Always cover the blast machine if left in an unsheltered location overnight. Blast hose should be loosely coiled and tied when not being used. 6. PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE Regularly scheduled maintenance is the responsibility of the equipment owner and user. Prior to each work shift the blast machine and all related components must be inspected for worn or damaged parts. Immediately replace all worn and/or damaged components with genuine Mod-U-Blast parts prior to using the equipment. 6.1 REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEMS. The Mod-U-Blast remote control systems are designed to operate trouble free if the following maintenance procedures are observed: 6.2 On a daily basis, clean the outlet silencer after four hours of blasting. Worn or clogged outlet silencers must be replaced to prevent a malfunction or damage to the control valve. 6.3 On a monthly basis, disassemble the control valve and check the component parts for wear and or damage. 12

14 6.4 Refer to the Mod-U-Blast remote control switch assembly for switch maintenance. WARNING: DO NOT WELD ON THE BLAST MACHINE. THIS VOIDS NATIONAL BOARD APPROVAL AND CERTIFICATION 7. TROUBLE SHOOTING Note: Prior to correcting any system malfunction personnel are required to wear protective safety equipment, including but not limited to, a NIOSH approved supplied air respirator, leather gloves, ear protection, safety shoes, and abrasive resistant cover wear. Observe all OSHA regulations, EPA guidelines, NIOSH local regulations and ACGIH recommendations. Never perform service or maintenance on a blast machine which is under pressure. Serious injury or death can occur. 7.1 No abrasive discharge from nozzle Depressurize the blast machine, blast hose and air supply hose. SHUT OFF THE SOURCE OF COMPRESSED AIR. Make sure the source of compressed air is a clean dry source. Inspect the nozzle, abrasive grit valve and blast hose for blockages. Be sure that the remote control system is operating correctly. Check the supply of abrasive in the machine. If the problem still persists, open the abrasive grit valve to the full open position. Secure control of the blast hose and pressurize the blast machine and quickly open and close the choke valve. 7.2 Abrasive flow from the nozzle is spitting or slow This condition is often corrected with a simple adjustment of the abrasive grit valve. If this does not resolve the problem, follow the same steps as in 8.1. If the problem still persists, excess moisture within the blast machine system will often cause an unsteady stream of abrasive from the blast nozzle. If moisture is detected, equip the blast machine with a moisture separator or more preferably an air dryer skid. 7.3 Blast machine tank fails to pressurize Review the start up procedures covered in this manual. Inspect the remote control hoses or wires for leaks, kinks, or severed connections. Be sure that the remote control system is operating correctly. Check the volume of air supplied to the blast machine. An insufficient air supply will not seat the pop-up valve against the filler port gasket to pressurize the blast machine. 7.4 Remote control system failure Review the set-up procedures in this manual. Since there are a number of reasons for this problem to occur, if the problem still persists, contact your local Mod-U-Blast distributor or Mod-U-Blast direct
