Borden Gold Project Worker Protection Strategy, & Emergency Response John JY Young Peter Calnan April 20 th 2017
Safe Simple Green Silent Invisible 2 Borden Mine is in the early stages of an Advanced Exploration Project Underground mine with ramp access from surface Mobile equipment primarily electric/battery powered Two boom jumbo, 14 ton LHD, MacLean Bolters and Service carrier, Orica emulsion loaders Trucking from u/g to surface will be handled with 40T diesel trucks (will convert to battery as soon as technology is in place. Currently ahead of schedule
Eliminating Compressed Air Lines 3 Goldcorp and many other mining companies have experienced serious injuries to employees in events related to compressed air based on the stored energy hazard throughout the mine workings Borden Mine plans to eliminate this risk by operating without compressed air lines in the underground workings A risk assessment is open and active, ensuring that we identify and mitigate all hazards
Eliminating Compressed Air Lines 4 Potential concerns created by eliminating compressed air lines underground 1. Delivery of stench gas 2. Source of emergency fresh air in the event of underground smoke or ambient air contamination
Notification in the Event of a Mine Emergency 5 Without compressed air, this traditional method of delivering stench gas in a mine emergency is eliminated. Emergency notification will be accomplished by: 1. Delivering stench via the mine ventilation system 2. Voice notification via mine radio 3. Borden is investigating electronic alarm systems such as flashing cap lamps, mobile vehicle lights, radio alarm systems, etc.
Emergency Fresh Air in a smoke or gas event 6 Without compressed air, this traditional source of fresh air in a mine emergency is eliminated. Measures to offset this condition are: Portable Self Contained Refuge Chamber Drager ChargeAir system Self Contained Breathing Apparatus Storage cache of SCBA units SCBA re-fill stations PAS Colt personal breathing air units or Self Contained Self Rescuers
Portable Self Contained Refuge Chamber 7 Fully self-contained 48 hour capacity (expandable to 72 hrs) Inclusions mine radio, gas monitoring, etc. Located as per Goldcorp guidelines example every 60m vertical or 600m along tunnel (to be confirmed)
Worker Protection Strategy 8 Goldcorp Borden Mine intends to have breathing protection available to every person underground, within moments of an underground event. To accomplish this goal: Emergency hardware will be placed in specific and key locations Everyone going underground will be trained in it s use Personnel would have immediate access to breathing apparatus (if required) during an event, and then proceed to a refuge station
Drager ChargeAir system what is it? 9 System consists of: Self Contained Breathing Apparatus SCBA SCBA Storage Cache Units SCBA Recharge Stations Proven technology Drager is reputable and has a long history in emergency equipment System used extensively in US coal mines
Drager ChargeAir system 10 Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Fully enclosed Highest level of respiratory protection Good visibility & communication Comfortable to wear No lifespan or shelf life except bottles (carbon fiber has 15yr life) Simple use Parallels Mine Rescue & Fire Fighting
Drager ChargeAir system 11 SCBA Storage Cache Units Sealed for apparatus protection Basic unit holds 10 SCBA s Located 2 nd or 3 rd re-muck back from the face Spacing from Refuge Chamber or Refill Station maximum 850m **
Drager ChargeAir SCBA Storage Cache Units 12
Drager ChargeAir system 13 SCBA Recharge Station Sealed for component protection Good for 36 full refills Placed in strategic locations for refilling Spaced 850m ** max. from SCBA cache, or another refill station
Drager ChargeAir SCBA Recharge Station 14 Emergency masks available at each recharge station Available if someone reaches a recharge station without an SCBA Mask is plugged directly into recharge station Substantial amount of air supply Emergency Mask
Drager ChargeAir SCBA Recharge Station 15
Drager ChargeAir SCBA Recharge Station 16
Personal Protection 17 Personal Airline System PAS Colt Bridge unit from face to SCBA cache unit 10 minute capacity Similar to SCBA use Units to be stored at SCBA Cache locations & on mobile equipment Personnel take one with them to the face Hook-up availability at recharge stations NIOSH recommends this unit for use within 100m of fresh air based on entry & escape, and maintenance tasks Our use dictates escape only and maximum ramp travel distance is set at 285m **
Personal Protection 18 Self Contained Self Rescuer - Drager Oxy box K25 Personal emergency self rescuer Bridge unit from face to SCBA cache unit 30 minute capacity (850m of travel in ramp)** Robust case Relatively light unit Personnel carry one at all times
PAS Colt vs Self Rescuer 19 Drager PASColt PROS Infinite shelf life Same training as SCBA Good visibility/communication Can be connected to recharge station CONS $1,875 each 10 minutes of protection One scenario is the need to pick up & return unit to cache location each time (or could store a few in a box near the face)
PAS Colt vs Self Rescuer 20 Drager Oxy 6000 SCSR 10 year life $1000 each PROS 60 minutes of protection Strong, robust case CONS Require one for everyone Single use then useless Different training Poor visibility/communication Larger/heavier than Oxy K25 Drager Oxy box K25 PROS 5 years before service $850 each 30 minutes of protection Strong, robust case Lighter/smaller than 6000 CONS Require one for everyone Single use then useless Different training Poor visibility/communication
National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health 21 ** According to NIOSH standards, travel distances under air are based on: 30 minute walk on level ground or 5,600 feet Assume ½ that distance in ramp or 2,800 feet 2,800 feet is equivalent to 853 meters Assume 30 minutes = 853 meters in a ramp Then 10 minutes = 285 meters in a ramp
