1 The Utah Nordic Alliance Volume XVII No.5 March 2007 Classic Klister Course Gary Fladmoe by Bruce Schroeder It was a recipe for trouble: a shrinking snowpack, warming weather, cloudy skies with a 40% chance of rain predicted for the weekend, and 200 skiers ready to race the Timberland Wasatch Citizens Series 10 kilometer classic. An array of waxing torches were warming klister into the skis at wax benches near the start. At the Toko wax tent, people were using various combinations of klister grip spray with good success. Based on the overall fast race times, most racers were successful in matching their wax and equipment to the surprisingly skiable conditions. The race crew had the results ready shortly after the race. Before the prize drawing, race director Dave Hanscom thanked Charlie Stugis for the excellent course preparation and then led a round of Happy Birthday in his honor. University of Utah racers, Snorri Einarsson, Fabian Figi, and Ben Fick, swept the first three places followed by Barry Makarewicz, and Jason Travis. In the Women s Open Kelly Milligan stayed ahead of Laurie Humbert and Roxanne Toly. Complete results are in this issue. Men s Age Group Winners were Erik Solberg, Jeff Bauer, Joseph Szekely, Sandy Brown, RJ Guiney, Bill Hokanson, Tom Noaker, Gary Peirce, Tom Burkemo, Wilson Dippo, Ian Anderson, Erik Gates, Garrett Bullough, Mathew Carpenter. Women s Age Group Winners were: Sarah Dennett, Julie Minahan, Paula Hudson, Lori Lange, Laura Howat, Kirsten Whetstone, Debbie Wagner, Marit Glenne, Andrea Putt, Hayley Weight, Wendy Dunkle, Tristin Lowe, Mia Anderson, Katie Bonacci.

2 EDITOR S NOTE Ski Travel Nordic skiers must have a travel bug. Even though we have some of the best skiing and snow in the country, collectively we drive hundres of miles beyond our Utah borders to ski. It starts in the fall when hundreds of skiers descend on West Yellowstone for the early season skiing and traditional thanksgiving events. Northern Exposure We travel for various reasons. I plan my out of town travel to meet particular race or fitness goals. This past month Idaho has been the destination of choice for casual skiers as well as the elite Utah racers, entering and winning at the Tamarack Loppet in McCall Idaho, the Teton Ridge Classic in Driggs and the Boulder Mountain Tour in Sun Valley. Hopefully March will bring enough snow to extend our season whether we travel or stick close to home. Skiing in the South Other TUNA members like to travel to Southern Utah for unusual challenges like the LaSal Loppet in Moab, which allows for side pursuits of mountain biking or a hike through Arches. Many families head to Ruby s Inn and Bryce Canyon for the Winter Festival, which provides a variety of family friendly events and venues. Digital Explosion The combination of reasonably priced cameras and cheap memory cards has increased our workload here. The TUNA News editorial team reviewed nearly 1000 photos from multiple photo contributors (654 from Gary Fladmoe from one race!!) to make our image selections for this issue. Thanks! Contributions Welcome Submissions, photos, and high resolution digital pictures are needed through the season. 3 NORDIC NEWS Named for the Nordic God of Skis, the Ullr Chase in Logan Canyon picked up the second weekend time slot this year. On Saturday, March 10, skiers will start at Franklin Basin, climb over Danish Pass, then descend to Beaver Creek Campground on groomed snowmobile roads. If you liked the Wasatch Overland, you ll love this 40-kilometer race. Check for details. The following Saturday, March 17, will be the annual TUNA Wooden Ski Classic at Alta. Participants in this 5K classical event (calling it a race would be an overstatement) are rewarded more for their wool knickers, wooden skis, and bamboo poles than for their speed on the track. The potluck lunch afterwards is a great opportunity for socializing and welcoming of spring. McKay Edwards will host the fifth annual LaSaLoppet in Moab on March 24. This overland-style event starts with a climb up into the LaSal Mountains on a road groomed for snowmobiles, makes a loop, then descends back down to the start. As usual, there will be a great party after the race, and you ll be able to do some early mountain biking before headby Dave Hanscom March 2007 My Colorado son introduced me to a new race on the first Saturday in February. If, like me, you ve gotten turned off by the crowd and the expense of the Boulder Mountain Tour, and if you d like more challenge than 30 kilometers of downhill skiing, you might want to try the Alley Loop in Crested Butte. For an extra couple of hours of driving, you get to ski 42K of delightful rolling terrain amidst southwestern Colorado s spectacular peaks. The race is pretty informal (lots of costumes), and it s part of their Winter Carnival weekend that includes fun activities for the whole family. Crested Butte is a neat place to visit any time of year, a refreshing mountain town that hasn t lost its charm (like Sun Valley and Park City). Timberland Wasatch Citizens Series By the time you read this, the Timberland Wasatch Citizens Series will be done for another winter. As I write this in early February, we ve had to move two of our first four races due to marginal snow at Mountain Dell and Sundance. My thanks to Howard Peterson and his Soldier Hollow crew for hosting us on January 27, and to Charlie Sturgis at White Pine for bailing us out on February 10. Despite these two last-minute changes, participation has been at an all-time high again this winter. In fact, our average for just the classical races (192) was higher than our overall average for any winter other than 05/06, when we finally broke the 200 mark. With turnouts at the 300 level for skate events, it s looking like we ll exceed 250 this year, which will be a 20% increase over anything we ve seen previously. Amazing! Once again, I want to thank our generous sponsors. The post-race drawings included at least 50 prizes, and the special drawing (for those who participated in four or more races) included skis from Atomic, Fisher, and Rossignol, plus a pair of top-of-the-line poles from Swix. The participation prize was another nice long-sleeved shirt from Timberland. Thanks particularly to Kelly Milligan (MidValley Animal Clinic), Jeff Scott (Scott Machinery Company), Brett Kassing (Nate Wade Subaru), and Kevin Murphy (Kipp and Christian Law Offices) for their generous cash donations for lunches at three of our events. It s great to see so many families enjoying the races and parties afterwards! March Races March will be a full month for die-hard Utah cross country skiers. The Yellowstone Rendezvous has been moved up a week for this year only. It will be on the first Saturday in March, rather than the second, and offers 25 and 50 kilometer classical and free technique races, with shorter distances for kids. West Yellowstone has become much more skier friendly in the past couple of years, with fewer unregulated snow machines fouling the air. march 2007 page 3

4 ing home the next day. Finally, the Solitude Spring Fling is back on the calendar to end the season. Saturday, April 7, is the date for the second annual rejuvenated race/party at Solitude. This is a great way to finish your winter racing and get into the spirit of spring. April And Beyond It will soon be time to move to the high elevations. The snowmobile roads in the Uintas (Mirror Lake, Soapstone, Wolf Creek Pass, Mill Hollow, Co-op Creek, etc) are really thin this year, so the season may not last long if we don t get a bunch of new snow between now and then. The Daniels Summit Lodge loop, which is usually groomed on Friday and Saturday nights well into April, can be heavenly on a Sunday morning before the snowmobilers wake up. And my fingers are crossed that we ll have some late spring crust skiing in the Strawberry Valley. page 4 march 2007

8 Wells Fargo Boulder Mountain Tour Dong and Demong Demolish Competition Makarewicz Blazes to 5th Overall by Kurt Dudley On a beautiful, mostly sunny day in the Wood River valley with temperatures in the mid 20 s and climbing, three time Nordic Combined Olympian Billy Demong of Park City and Evelyn Dong of Wayland, Massachusetts skated away from the field at the 32nd Wells Fargo Boulder Mountain Tour. Demong beat his rivals by over one minute finishing in 1:10:12. Dong, a Middlebury student who is currently living and training in Bend, Oregon, obliterated her competition by a three minute margin. Her 1:16:06 time may be the most dominate female performance in over a decade. She was 35th overall while the second place finisher, Kate Pearson was 53rd at 1:19:13. Zach Violett and Marshall Greene were in the silver and bronze positions for the men. Inge Travis was the women s 3rd place overall winner. Barry Makarewicz skied one of his best races ever to finish 5th overall in a time of 1:11:46. He beat a slew of former Olympians Utah Winners along the way, as well as last year s winner Zach Simons. Kelly Milligan skied very well thanks to Barry s ski prep and won her age group (W45-49) and finished 7th among all women, Abby Larson was the 6th woman across the finish line. TUNA showed up in force as usual for this race. Richard Groth (see photo) finished his 30th of 32 BMT s in a little over 2 hours. Nine year old Hannah Bruns was the youngest competitor this year and brother Kurt won the 12 and under male category ahead of second place Finn Burns. Among the Utah age group finishers, Paula Hudson grabbed 2nd in W35-39, Carl Swenson and Ian Harvey went 1st and 2nd in M35-39, Roxanne Toly placed 2nd, Susie Graves-Henneman 5th and Amy Sanyer 6th in W Scott Nielson, David Gontrum and Randy Anderson were 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, in M David Fosnocht had a top 100 finish in this group. Laura Howat and Lurah Klatt were 9th and 11th in the W The W50-54 group has Marcy Allen, Lori Gates and Ann Page going 5th, 6th, and 7th. Bruce Allen was the top dog for M50-54, while Bill Bedford was 9th. Joan Thompson and Patrick English won their age group, Nancy Fichter was 3rd. Bill Thompson got to the podium in M60-64 with a 3rd place finish behind unbeatable Del Pletcher of Ketchum, who has not lost his age group in at least the past 20 years. Rich Groth TUNA families flourished in the race results as well. The Bruns and Burns, Battle s, Klatt s, Fichter s, Groth s, Henneman s, Sanyer s, Makarewicz-Howat s, Metos, Dunn s, Thompson s, Gates, Fosnocht s, Brown s and Stice s all participated and couldn t have asked for a more beautiful, mild, sunny day. The Boulder Mountain Tour borrowed a McKay Edward s idea (via the Lasaloppett) and awarded a state cup for the first time which is comprised of the five fastest men s and women s times added together. The Utah group included Bill Demong, Barry Makarewicz, Josh Smullin, Ian Harvey, Carl Swenson, Inge Travis, Abby Larsen, page 8 march 2007

The only disappointment expressed by the patrons from this years race Finn Burns and Kurt Bruns involved the meager post race feed which featured some weak chicken noodle soup which was shy on the noodles and chicken. There was bananas and some pretty good sweet bread but no cookies, brownies or other yummy treats. The evening awards ceremony was in a school gym with bleacher or floor seating and absolutely nothing to eat or drink for your $75 dollar entry fee. There were a number of good prize drawings for skis, boots, poles, ski bag, some clothing, Wild Rose threw in some stone grinds; Muffy Ritz and Bob Rosso did a nice tag team job of moving through the awards and prizes in 90 minutes. All in all, another fun tour and weekend in Sun Valley. Distressed properties for sale... 10 BACK OF THE PACK Why do they do it? by David Susong I just dropped Bob Irvine off at his house after he spent a full day timing the Junior Olympic Qualifier (JOQ) race at Soldier Hollow, climbed back into my truck and wearily sank into the seat. It felt good to get off my feet for the first time in 10 hours. Earlier I had said goodbye to Chris Eppler in the stadium at Soldier Hollow. The weariness I felt was etched in his face after he had spent two days from dawn to dusk moving V boards, stadium fences, helping with starts and doing spectator crowd control. Celeste Eppler, his wife, had taken on the Herculean task of coordinating the volunteers for the JOQ race. She had been busy for several weeks calling, cajoling and scheduling as well as ordering lunches, buying food and snacks for the 60 plus people helping to organize the event. All these people came and donated their time, energy, and expertise to make the JOQ race possible. As I turned on my headlights and pointed the truck toward home, I thought, Why do they do it? Why do all these people give so generously of their time and energy? Some had to take vacation time from work to spend a full day out in the cold. They could have been out skiing themselves or with their families. Other people who were there do not ski race or even ski yet they diligently volunteer to organize many of the ski races each year. All of these people amaze me and I greatly admire their dedication and generosity. As I drove home I pondered this question. Why do people volunteer and give so generously of themselves? I think there are many overlapping answers to this question. Perhaps the most obvious reason people volunteer is for their children. Those of us with children want to be involved with their lives and activities. Chris and Celeste and many of the other parents over the course of the JOQ weekend left their tasks to be with their children and to enthusiastically cheer when it was their turn to race. The JOQ became a family event when parents were out in the stadium or on the course working so the children could race. For the other volunteers who do not have children racing, the answer to the question becomes more complex with more difficult to define motives. TUNA is a community of Nordic ski enthusiasts and it can be very rewarding to participate in activities within this community. Bob raced for many years as well as being a stalwart on the Wasatch Citizen Series race crew. The groomers at Mountain Dell, who are often out by headlamp and headlight in the dark, must have a sense of satisfaction from the return accolades and thanks they receive from the ski community. Whether a person is grooming at Mountain Dell, timing at a Wasatch Citizens Series race, coaching kids, or grilling salmon at the Salmon Bake, there is a rather difficult to quantify or describe feeling of working with others toward a common purpose. There is a camaraderie and satisfaction in working together that I saw in people each day at the JOQ. As each wave of kids started their races on time and they streamed out on to the course there was a collective sense of accomplishment in all the volunteers who made it happen. At the end of the day after everything had been taken down and put away, everyone was tired yet knew that races went off smoothly, the kids and visiting parents had a wonderful time and it was a job well done. To all those who volunteer and make all the TUNA activities happen, Thank You. Thank you for so generously donating your time, expertise and energy. I have the utmost respect and admiration for you. Thank you, Celeste, Chris and Bob and all the others who helped organize the JOQ. With out all the people in TUNA like you, there would be no TUNA, and no nordic ski community in Utah. page 10 march 2007

13 Wasatch Citizens Series 10k Freestyle by Bill Stenquist The third race in the Timberland Wasatch Citizens Series was moved from its scheduled Mountain Dell location to Soldier Hollow, due to marginal snow conditions and vile air quality. Dave Hanscom and the WCS crew realized that with the enormous popularity the series has had this year, it would be very difficult to host a quality event, given the limitations at Mt. Dell this year. Howard Peterson and the Soldier Hollow crew graciously allowed the race to be moved, and given the 194 racers that participated, it was a very good choice. Weather conditions started cold and overcast with temperatures in the low teens. However, with a one hour delay in the start time, the sun came out and conditions could not have been better. Temperatures at race time were hovering around 20 F, but with the radiant heat, conditions were perfect. The course was the same as the Winter Games course the week before. Two laps of 5k, leaving the stadium heading out on the sprint course, up the short hill onto Going Home. From there it went up the draw onto Finger of Fate, and then followed the trail all the way to the east end of SOHO. The return was a series of two short hills interspersed with a reasonable flat section where one can catch their breath. The best part of this course, in my opinion, was the descent back into the stadium. After the workout on the hilly return section, the course descended quickly, and you were back to the start before you knew it. Podium finishers for the Women s Open were Rosie Brennen (28:13.5), Inge Travis (28:14.1) and the intrepid Kelly Milligan (29:05.0). The top Men s Open finishers were Zack Simons (24:52.9), Josh Smullen (25:00.1), and Barry Makarewicz (25:11.0). Age class finishers are listed on the results page further in the newsletter. Lunch was provided by Kipp and Christian Law Offices and Nate Wade Subaru, and the local race sponsor for that day was Kirkham s, who provided drawing prizes. Soldier Hollow provides an excellent racing venue. The grooming is without compare, and the trails are wide and graded perfectly for cross country skiing. And this year with the bountiful snow in December and the SOHO crew s snowmaking, there isn t any better cross country skiing in North America. 14 Our Own Private Idaho Teton Ridge Classic by Ron Sawdey January 20, As cold as it had been here in the City of Salt leading up to January 20th I knew that it would be colder in the Teton Valley. We rolled into Tetonia at 7pm Friday and it was a chilly zero degrees as we stepped out of the car to pick up our race bibs at the race headquarters. However, it clouded up over night and was a very respectable 12 degrees as we saddled up for the race the next morning. These conditions made kick waxing about as simple as it can be; BLUE in just about any brand of wax. Even a wax grommet like me can get it right on days like that. Sadly, the turnout was down from last year, about 130 compared to 165. We theorized with the race organizers that the Junior Olympic qualifier at SoHo that weekend kept a lot of Salt Lake parent-racers at home to tend to their children-racers. We also heard from some of our Boise brethren that the Great Nordeen race in Bend Oregon that same day drew many of their local community. Regardless, I still believe that this race draws the best kick and gliders from Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. I also believe that the race keeps getting better each year. The track was well set throughout the course, with the parallel tracks fading into sharp curves to allow for skiers to step turn (or snow plow) more readily through those turns. Also, preliminary results were getting posted before the raffle was over, giving those who forgot to stop their watch as they crossed the finish line a chance to find out how they did. The post-race soups and breads served up by the folks from Miso Hungry were excellent, and the Ginger Ales from Snake River Brewing were a nice touch. My only complaint was that they ran out of food before some racers completed the course. Next year; more food! Despite our small numbers, TUNA members showed well at the race. The husband-wife duo of Barry Makarewicz and Laura Howat continue to have strong seasons. Barry won the Men s (is he really that old?) in an amazing 1:20 for the 28km course and Laura turned in the women s third fastest time for the day at 1:48. Don Pollari came in third in the Men s 45-49, with a very fast 1:27, and Randy Anderson came in second in the Men s with a sold 1:30. However, my hero for the race was not a Utahan. It was Charley French from Sun Valley who won the Men s with a time of 2:18 for 28km! When I grow old(er) I want to be like Charley; skiing long and hard, showing those young ones how it should be done. Most of the Utah folks who made it up for the race page 14 headed home soon after the race. I must say that was their loss. It was snowing pretty hard as people packed up and the drive home had to have been a white knuckle affair. For Bruce, Kurt and myself we made the short drive to town, provisioned up at the local grocery (yes you can buy wine in grocery stores in Idaho), headed back to our room where we noshed, napped, and generally recharged our batteries. The race dinner was held that evening at a very intimate local restaurant called Miso Hungry. Don t let the funky name put you off. The women who run this place know how to cook and served a marvelous meal to the dozen or so people who were lucky enough to sign up. I would highly recommend it to those of you who have not done so. We also learned of a new place to stay from Caryl and Kagan Brown. They raved about the Teton Teepee Lodge in Alta, Wyoming. According to them it is a very unique place to stay with a huge, teepee-like central sitting area with a mammoth fireplace in the middle. Caryl was impressed with how family friendly they were. Though there are no TVs in the rooms, there is a large game and TV room in the basement dorm area (a nice option if you want to go on the cheap). They also have wireless Internet access for those of you who must stay connected on your ski vacations. And rather than they usual stingy, continental breakfast, your room charge includes a hot, family-style breakfast. Definitely a place worth checking out for future visits. (No they were not staying in Jackson Hole. The weird geography/politics of this part of this region has the Teton Valley in Idaho, but the Grand Targhee ski resort in Wyoming. Alta, Wyoming is on Ski Hill Road a few miles east of Driggs. Check it out on a map) Like last year, the course was reset early Sunday morning after the storm left six inches of new snow over Saturday night. We woke up Sunday morning to clear and cold weather. We slept in and didn t pack up the car until 10, and when it reluctantly started up I checked the outside temp. It was -2. After a long breakfast it had warmed up to 1, and by the time we drove to the Ranch, it was a balmy 5 degrees. However, there wasn t a breath of wind, nor a cloud in the sky and the track was magnificent. Bruce, Kurt and I had previously agreed to an easy hour of skiing, but it was so wonderful we kept going for two hours. At one point we skied on a part of their system that we had never been on and came to a promontory with a spectacular view of the Teton Range. It simply doesn t get any better than that our own private Idaho. march 2007

16 Kids Learn to Ski TUNA s Kids Learn to Ski program experienced four wonderful January days at Mt. Dell this year. Over 40 kids, ranging from four to nine years old, found good conditions for playing games, going up and down the hills sometimes off the jump, and searching for hidden treasures. At the end of the sessions homemade cookies fed the smiling faces. This program would not happen and, not happen as well as it has without the excellent people who have come forward to volunteer their time and skills with children, sharing with them their love for cross-country skiing. I d like to send out via this newsletter a heartfelt thank you to all those that helped make this year's Sunday program a success. Your time and commitment to the kids was appreciated by all those involed. Also, Also! I d like to give a special thanks to those kids who've been through the Sunday program, have now moved on to the TUNA ski program on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, and who came out and assisted our groups and shared your enthusiasm for the sport. That was a joy to see. Thanks everyone. After four years of organizing the program I have decided to pass the program over to Suky Stewart. Many of you know Suky and her gift with children, and her talent on skis and on foot, she will add much to the program that she started years ago. Thanks for coming back Suky. I d like to thank David Susong who helped get me started four years ago when I started organizing the Sunday program, and Jim Haisley who has assisted, and encouraged me the past three years. Also, thanks to the grooming staff that has always kept the kid s program in mind, providing the kids with ample space to play games. This program intoduced my son to skiing and in many ways introduced me to the joy of cross-country skiing. Thank you to all the wonderful people associated with TUNA, your commitment to the spot adds so much to our community. Mark page 16 march 2007

I had stayed at my favorite retreat, the Peruvian Inn at Alta the night before the Wood Ski Classic so my commute to the end of the Albion Basin was brief. I was welcomed by a cheerful crowd decked out in knickers, scarves, and wooden skinny skis with huge smiles on their faces ready to tromp around the basin telling their favorite ski yarns. After a few smiles, a couple of stories, a good wax, I was headed up the trail for a fun adventure. Last year I was a first year, novice Tuna member so I didn t know what to expect. I knew that my ski technique was limited, but I was challenged to compete with Debbie Wagner in telling the most comical and longest ski tale for the day. Well, I laughed a lot, skied in the fluffiest powder that we are so proud of at Alta and acquiesced the title for the best story to my long time road racer friend Debbie. What I did gain was this: a very fond appreciation for my group of old and new acquaintances and a love for a new tradition at Alta. Charlie Coltrain and his associates need to be congratulated for collecting a vast array of nifty prizes, introducing us to a new sports drink vitamin water, supplying us with a fun collection of wooden skinny skis, and hosting a hearty, delicious potluck luncheon. every girl deserves an adventure! girlfriends go: costa rica april march 2007 page 17

20 On Nordic Niceties by Michael Dunn Don t be yourself be someone a little nicer. Mignon McLaughlin, The Second Neurotic s Notebook, 1966 It happened shortly after the first serious of snowfall of the season. It was a brilliant, sunny Saturday morning in November. A quick check of the TUNA web site revealed no sterling options at any of my normal haunts. Fortunately, Solitude was not only open for Nordic, but also offering half price tickets. Frankly, I was so hungry for cross country skiing that I was excited by the prospects of being back on my cross country skis once again. Arriving at Solitude I grabbed my recently scraped and brushed skating skis, walked across the parking lot and went in to purchase my pass. With it being so early in the season there were few cars in the parking lot and I really didn t expect to see anyone else as I exited the ticket office. I was wrong. Walking across the plaza, and looking quite resplendent in a bumblebee black and yellow Toko outfit was a man obviously coming in to get his pass. My heart leapt with joy. Here, after all, was a fellow citizen from the land of Nordic. A person who could speak my language and understand my pre-season bliss. Although I didn t know him from Bjorn Dahle, nor had I ever seen before, there was an immediate and unspeakable kinship. He was, after all, obviously a Nordic geek like me and therefore, a brother. I readied myself to talk. I wondered if he might want to begin our conversation with a discussion of trail conditions. Or perhaps the prospects for upcoming snowstorms. Maybe we would explore the biomechanical advantages of V-2alt on the flats. For sure we would need to kibitz about some of the new carbon skis. At the very least I anticipated a brief philosophical discussion about wax. And I was more than ready to defend my red decision, even though it was clearly warming up into yellow territory. But it was me who got waxed. With skis in hand and his boots clicking along the plaza cobbles, he briskly passed by me as if I wasn t there. There was no, hey, see you on the trail. No wax talk. No casual head nod for me, the minimum acceptable acknowledgement of a fellow being. Not even an insincere hi. I was devastated. Understand, I wasn t looking for a new bosom buddy. Or a morning-long existential chat over coffee that might land me on his Christmas card list next year. I just wanted to connect with a fellow XC citizen. For the chance, albeit briefly, to share common passion for our uncommon sport. Because, as simple as it sounds, it is these small connections that are so critical to not only sustain, but grow our precious Nordic community. Let me explain. The comedian Steven Wright once quipped, Cross country skiing is great if you live in a small country. In an offhand way, his humor was spot on. Our small country is the cross country community we all play and compete in. Cultural, religious and socioeconomic differences aside, we meld together as Utah s Nordic nation. Ours is, indeed, a small, vibrant, passionate and dedicated community. We have the luxury of unbelievably beautiful, uncrowded and accessible venues. Costs for our sport are ridiculously low. Most important, our community is comprised of some of the most interesting, diverse and talented people to be found in Utah. But the only way to know that is by knowing the citizens of our fair land. And in order to maintain and grow this Camelot we need to do two things. First, we need to look for opportunities to build, reinforce and expand the bonds and friendships that can and should flourish within our sport. That won t happen by staying in our own comfortable orbits. Or by only talking to and hanging out with the same people we always see at races or on the trails. We sometimes need to take that risky step of extending ourselves and doing the human basics. Like saying hello. Sharing a wax tip or bench. Or politely pointing out the hazards of skiing counterclockwise on a clockwise track. In running and biking, niceties are a part of the fabric of those sports. Runners greet each other as they pass. Cyclists offer help to even a stranger when they have a flat. Why? Well, not only is it the right thing to do, but because that s just what everyone does. Someone did that for them. So they start extending that courtesy to others. Pretty soon this cycle makes those kinds of behaviors part of the protocol. Connections and bonds grow. Individual commitment to the sport intensifies. And our community flourishes. On a human level we need those connections. But we also need the bits of knowledge transfer that naturally occur as part of the process. Especially when you are new to a sport as technical as cross country skiing. Think about it, cross country is a sport of a lot of sport-specific knowledge. With books, articles and even personal experience we might eventually learn it. But I suspect most people will burn out before ever getting there. By contrast, the quicker we access that legion of little tips, the more enjoyable skiing becomes. Improvement happens. And the more we become committed to the sport. Speaking as a relative newbie to the sport, I m so grateful page 20 march 2007

21 to the many people who stepped out of their comfort zone to introduce and teach this sport to me. Like Dave Hanscom, my Park City neighbor whose affable, steady XC evangelizing led to my conversion and baptism at White Pine. Or Debbie Wagner who taught my children in school but gave me the life-changing homework assignment of attempting the Boulder Mountain Tour. Or the legendary Barry Makarewicz whose most impressive time is not the podiumworthy stuff he turns in week after week, but the time he takes with the middle-of-the-packers like me to go out of his way to say hello, answer a dumb question, or just pass along an unsolicited waxing tip. There are countless others. And to all of you who have extended yourself in any way, I m forever grateful. Because of your efforts, I love this sport and now passionately share it with others. What concerns me, however, are those who don t get it. Like the Solitude plaza sourpuss. Way too often I encounter people whose icy, don t-you-dare-talk-to-me demeanor tells me they are either so consumed with making the next Olympic team or so deep into their commune with nature that they have no time for a brief commune with a fellow citizen from their own country. This is not to say that I expect each and every member of our community to be out shaking hands, shooting the breeze and kissing babies every time they go skiing. I realize some indifference is unintended. Sometimes people are just having a bad day or just don t want to talk. Training time is precious. I respect your right to ski alone. And be alone. I like to train with my ipod on just as much as anyone. But in the interest of building our sport community, is it too much to ask to take a minute or two in the parking lot, at the awards ceremony or the trailhead to extend yourself once in a while? Comments about conditions or uh, did you know you have your skis on backwards?, or even just saying hi are welcome and will mean more than you will ever know. Besides, it s easy, painless and may lead to a new aquaintenship or even a (gulp) deeper relationship. Which leads me to the second reason we need to extend ourselves if we are to survive. Let s face it, there are many threats to our sport from indifference to global warming. But the biggest threat is a lack of new blood. We need to grow in population and vitality. That means growing younger. The good news is that there are signs of such growth. The recent WCS race at White Pine drew a record crowd. And class size in skating classes appears to be more popular than ever. But a quick glance at the results shows the other side of the ledger. We need the 20 to 40-year-old crowd to be introduced to this sport. Which won t happen until we invite them, teach them and, yes, talk to them. So the next time you re out skiing, I challenge you to look for an opportunity to connect with someone. Instead of being so totally consumed with the benefits of Hi-Flouro, consider the inestimable benefits a simple Hi as well. Unlike wax it s easy, painless and never wears out. It s also one of the most effective ways to ensure that our small country will someday evolve not so much into a big country, but into a much better, more connected country. race finish NORDIC STONE GRIND FULL REFINISH $49.99 Bases better than new! Saturday March 17th will find an oddly dressed group, on old and antique skis, kicking and gliding up the Alta road toward Albion Basin. This event is notable for awards not only for who is fastest, but also a mix of the oldest skis, oldest skier, or perhaps the combination of age of skis and skier; the best costume and best story teller. The race starts at 10:30 am and there is a potluck lunch following the race. April TUNA Social Event at Solitude Nordic The Nichols family have graciously invited TUNA members to meet for a pot luck lunch at their cabin on the Solitude Ski track following the Solitude Spring Fling Race. The race is April 7th and starts at 8:45. You will need to check with Solitude Nordic Center ( ) regarding the start location, at the top or bottom of the track! The Nichols cabin is located on the Cabin Fever Loop of the course. Access is only by ski trail. We will have directions/map at the Nordic Center the day of the race. Restroom facilities are limited at the cabin, so please consider using the restroom at the Nordic Center. This race is usually quite small. To assist Solitude and TUNA in planning, please RSVP by March 31st to Donna Wahoff-Stice at donna.wahoffstice@hsc.utah.edu or dstice@sisna.com. Telephone Stay tuned for information on the date and location of the Salmon Bake. Say HI when you pass me on the trails! Donna page 22 march 2007
