An activity that gave us a culture and an identity has framed and flavored some of the most memorable moments of our lives. Whether it s the exotic pursuit of untouched zones in far-off lands, the scoring of first chair at the local resort after a dump, or finally landing a trick we ve slammed on a hundred times. The spark is just as simple - and plentiful as it was when linking a couple turns was all we could manage. Last year was a huge design year for us and we re humbled by the recognition awarded to our efforts by our fans, our peers and the industry. And true to the spirit that got us here, for 017 we again pushed the needle further always in our own way. If it isn t obvious by now, we at YES. are not measuring ourselves against any other brand or playing catch up with emerging trends. We do what feels right, we fill voids that we see and we honestly have no idea where this path will take us. Forwards, backwards, it doesn t matter. As long as we re moving, we re happy. WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR OPTIMISTIC Continuing the evolving experiments with Underbite and lessons learned from the original 420, the Optimistic celebrates the current renaissance in snow sliding. Swapping width for length has been a common theme for us because we love the freedom that width allows you to leanit-over in every condition, on every pitch. Connecting that with further tweaks to the now legendary UnderBite, and a base profile that both rallies hardpack and planes over pow, and what you have is a board that could quite likely be the quiver killer. 420 POWDERHULL It had to be done. If our groundbreaking powder-planing theories were able to make a true twin float like a directional board, what would it do to the funnest powder board ever created? Requiring a neutral yet responsive and durable board, the Public was designed for terrain that was never meant to be ridden. Flat (or zero) camber keeps the board neutral enough to not get too squirrely and unpredictable. The core is milled with a mid-flex between the feet and a slightly thicker bump just outside the binding areas. This produces a soft overall flex that still pops ollies. We also upgraded the base and gave it a little more robust flex pattern to suit a more aggressive rider on a larger playing field. WHILE HELEN HERSELF RACKS UP FANS, HER BOARD COLLECTS MORE AWARDS AND A WELL-DESERVED FOLLOWING. Playful, intuitive and responsive - the Emoticon makes snowboarding more fun by making it easier to express your own style. A true twin shape and softer flex, the real jeenyus of this board is its unique UnderBite outline. Subtle but noticeable indents along the sidecut at the binding area re-distribute your body weight onto areas that help you turn. The effect is stable edge hold and a very confident, enhanced arc in your turn. No weirdness, just a board that rides as well as you know you can. Last year the Hel got what would seem to be a subtle update to its outline when we took the same shape and dimensions of her original board and applied Underbite. Most importantly, the result was that Helen was even more stoked on her favorite board, and making Helen smile is reward enough. But just to prove the tech is no fluke (and to make sure we weren t just drinking our own Kool-Aid ) we submitted this board to the key industry board tests and sure enough, it came back a winner. Which is not to say we don t drink our own Kool-Aid - we do - but it confirms that Underbite is not just marketing hype, but a technology you can feel and appreciate. This year s Greats theme is a collection of visual elements that made up some of our favorite UnInc graphics. The brief but monumental years that DCP, JP, Romain, Jeffy and Gigi had creative freedom with the project are curated here in a single celebratory homage. On the technical end, the Greats is graced with the original asym-twin outline. Tighter heel sidecut than toe rebalances and enhances the body s natural strengths. And this year we ve gone a step further by adding a carbon stringer on the heel-side of the board that effectively creates an asymmetrical flex. The more twisted it got, the better the turnout. I looked around me and saw my crew it was family - those were the days! UnInc Was Special for Me Because of It s Graphics! But mostly because of the team! They were all riders I looked up to! DANNY DAVIS I was lucky enough to get in on the uninc crew towards the end. Being with Romain, JP, DCP, and Gigi was pretty much the best way any kid could come up in snowboarding. They taught me how to travel and enjoy life to the most whether it was movie tour, or Alaska. My first times surfing were with the uninc boys and one of my first times to a strip club. I can t say enough how vital it was for me to be raised by this crew in my early years of professional snowboarding. They taught me a lot of about working hard and playing just as hard. No bullshit this board will shatter your long-held beliefs of what a snowboard can do or even what length you should be riding. In that 5 years we ve seen every other brand come to market with shorter, wider quiver boards. Are we bummed? Not at all. Our inspirations that led to this design are just a little less obvious. And besides, there s only one 420. LAST YEAR THE CLARK OPENED UP THE S.I.Y. MOVEMENT TO A HANDFUL OF EARLY ADOPTERS WITH A BURNING ITCH TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES. This year we continue to supply the creative commons with the blankest of canvas to make their mark in the world of shaping. Shape it. Post it! #YESClark Super short, the outline of the 420 plays with volume distribution and gets its float and stability from the exaggerated width, a little taper and a custom-crafted base profile. The outline and base surface area of the 148 is equal to a traditional 158 cm board and therefore has similar float and stability. But with all the mass located closer to your feet, it s far more maneuverable in the trees and way easier to spin. Because we don t get carried away with taper, swallowtails or overly setback stances, the board also rips hardpack and ride switch with ease. The Optimistic comes back this year with a lot more than just a face-lift. It s an all-new board, an all-new ride and comes stacked with some of our most proven and refined design theories. This board combines the fun, easy nature of the 420 with the carving prowess of the PYL and the explosive horsepower of our PowerDrive core. It s wide. And wide is good. This allows you to ride the board up to 6cm shorter, giving you more maneuverability in the trees and easier spins in the air. Width also creates stability at speed and floatation in the deep that we used to associate with length. It also begs to be leaned-over as far as you dare on the groomers, which is fun as hell! WHEN DOES A TAPERED BOARD NOT ACT LIKE ANY OTHER TAPERED BOARD? The 20/20 kinda freaked people out last year. By pushing our own creative envelope and disrupting the limits of what a modern snowboard factory could mass-produce, we set an industry milestone that we re very proud of. Tapering a board is a classic tool in a free-ride designer s tool chest. Pulling the tail width in narrower than the nose helps with floatation in powder and stability at speed. Problem is, they tend to wash-out or can be overpowered on the exit of turns. Deep pronounced concaves at either end of this short, true-twin outline cause the board s planing angle in powder to mimic a traditional directional board, even with your weight centered. The forward (or leading) concave draws air under the hull causing lift. That same shape on the trailing end is an exaggerated rocker line that speeds the release of snow causing the tail to drop. Land switch and the same thing happens. We really like to turn. David really loves to turn. Turning is fun. So we came up with a way to fix it. Tapered UnderBite segments the Pick Your Line s sidecut into three equal lengths. Each of these lengths step inward by a couple mms while remaining parallel to the corresponding side. Because the sidecut remains parallel and is not actually tapered (or pulled-in ), the edges remain fully engaged with the snow when under power. We also tweak the dimensions of each segment so that it gets more aggressive towards the tail. And with its wide waist width and tight sidecut, this board rips hardpack and park laps too. There s no need to compromise anymore with the 20/20 Powderhull. You get the same directional drive and float you expect from a tapered board, but with incredible edge hold and a lively snap out of every turn. Completely symmetrical outline; the stance is centered on the effective edge, tip and tail are identical length and shape, flex is identical at both ends of the board. Radial sidecut is effective and predictable. The overall shape allows complete freedom of expression by keeping the board a neutral, yet responsive tool. (Public) 2. ASYM TWIN / RADIAL Back in the day, asymmetrical boards meant you had to choose between a regular or goofy-stance board. Not only was that a nightmare for retailers, it didn t suit anyone with a duck stance which is everyone now. The Asym Twin applies a tighter, deeper heelside radial sidecut compared to the toe. In effect, balancing out the difference in a body s natural tendency to over-turn the toe edge and allowing you to ride switch better than you ever have. Regular or goofy - it s still a true twin. UnderBite edges re-distribute a rider s weight in such a way that it enhances turning ease and edge hold. Creating divots inward at the binding area reduces and disrupts the surface area of the edge that has contact with the snow while the board is turning. This increases the edge pressure by distributing your weight/energy in the areas where you need it - from the binding out, and through the center of the board where the carving arc is taking place. This segmentation of the sidecut into 3 key zones focuses your body weight onto areas that initiate, hold and release turns. (Basic, Typo, Emoticon, Hel YES., Optimistic ) 3. CAMROCK (EMOTICON, BASIC, TYPO, JACKPOT, GREATS, HEL, PYL) 4. MIDBITE MidBite blends the response of a narrow waist width with the stability of wider nose and tail. The MidBite steps the outline of the board inward 1.5mm just inside the insert pack. This step remains (rather than bumping back out like the Basic) down about 1/3 the length of the sidecut until just inside the next insert pack. This single long disruption of the sidecut between the bindings cheats the waist width narrower, providing quicker edge-toedge response. Meanwhile, from your binding out to the end of the sidecut we maintain a board width that is a stable platform for popping, spinning, and landing. (Jackpot) TAPERED UNDERBITE Similar looking to wings or bumps on a surfboard, it functions a little different on snow. Each side the board s effective edge is segmented into 3 distinct parts. Beginning at the nose, the sidecut is approx. 8 meters radius. At the front binding area, the edge steps inward by 2mm, the sidecut changes to approx. 7 meters and continues with that radius until the rear insert pack. Then, the edge steps in again 2mm and the sidecut tightens to approx. 6 meters. Traditional tapered boards take the full sidecut and pull the tail inward, which is away from the arc of your turn this is why they tend to wash out under hard carving. The Tapered UnderBite corrects this by: 1) keeping the sidecut parallel to its corresponding one on the other side of the board. 2) Increasing the sidecut depth as you move towards the tail creating a corrective hook to the taper. The board blends into turns effortlessly, has the directional drive and float you d expect from a tapered board, but it holds an edge and rockets out of turns like nothing else. (Pick Your Line) S FLAT CAMBER 6. DIRECTIONAL VOLUME TWIN / RADIAL As the lines between freeride and freestyle continue to erase, we had to address the needs of guys committed to riding only twins but finding themselves in more pow. Nose and tail volume is hard to notice in hardpack unless you re nose/tail pressing, but in pow it affects floatation and you can feel it. This led to the simple idea of the Directional Volume Twin. Symmetrical flex, centered stance, identical wide-points of the board (therefore, NOT tapered), identical length shovel lengths but with a slightly lower volume tail. (Standard, TDF) D POWDER HULL The 3D Powder Hull starts with a base profile that combines 2 distinct rocker lines that, when blended together, create a pronounced base concave in the nose and tail. The centerline is fully rockered starting from the insert packs, all the way to the tips of the bluntly shaped nose and tail. Out at the contact edges is a more conventional base profile that we use on many of our other boards. The resultant concave across the nose and tail acts differently at the leading end of the board than it does at the trailing end when riding in deep snow. At the leading end (nose), the concave draws air under the board just as a concave spoon-nose does on longboards in the surf causing lift and floatation. As the snow moves across the base it releases off the tail and the exaggerated rocker line along the center, causes the tail to drop downward. So even though it s a perfectly balanced twin, the board rides through deep snow with the same pitch, or planing angle, that we get with directional shapes and set-back stances. On hard-pack it s just a short, wide, super fun twin. (20/20, 420PH) BLENDED ROCKER 8. DIRECTIONAL WIDE / TAPERED Inspired by Steve Lis, and the revolution that occurred when kneeboards influenced surfboard design. Powder is all about speed and flotation. Displacement of a board s volume is affected by more than just length. With the 420 for example, we re able to get the stability and float normally associated with much longer boards by punching out the waist width and drastically chopping the length. The 148 for example has the same circumference and base surface as a traditional 160, but it s mass is located much closer to your feet resulting in more maneuverability and far less swing weight A slight taper (12mm) helps keep the nose up without loosing the tail s ability to hold in hardpack. Stance is only slightly set back from center of effective edge because the difference in nose and tail shovel keeps you from going over the nose. (The 420, 420PH) BLENDED ROCKER 1. FULL POPLAR POPLAR Our baseline core for tip to tail woodcore snowboard construction. Strikes a predictable balance between durability, consistent flex and light weight. POPLAR + BAMBOO Creating a lighter, more responsive core than the Full Poplar. The Poplar + Bamboo uses the same durable core, lightens it up by replacing 30% of the Poplar with Paulownia and then inserts two bamboo stringers down the full length for added pop and response. (TDF, Hel YES., Standard, Greats) Most of us have been taught to think of Extruded and Sintered as ways of describing the quality and/or hardness of a base material. Extruded being softer and slower, and Sintered being harder and presumably faster. Unfortunately this is not always true. Rather than re-educate, the industry tends to play on your current understanding, which we think is a little disingenuous. So here are the 3 base materials we use: 3. WEIGHTLESS Designed specifically for the 420 and 20/20. The weightless core strikes a critical balance between lightweight and strength. Using a lower density species of Poplar in areas that are not as structural and Paulownia in the areas that are, we re able to shave precious weight off our beloved 420 and now the 20/20. This helps a board not only float, but feel floaty. (420, 20/20) EXTRUDED. POPLAR PAULOWNIA S Just like it says. This material is formed by extrusion. It s softer than our other two bases, which isn t necessarily a bad thing. At the speeds many of us ride, this material is actually quicker (gets up to speed faster) than sintered when waxed correctly. You may have your own proof of this when you re smoking by someone with a dried out high-end base. It also retains wax better because it s more porous and is easy to fix with a P-Tex stick if you get scratches in it. 4. POWERDRIVE 2.0 We ve re-designed the PowerDrive core from last year evolving the original idea into what we call Carbon PowerDrive. The Optimistic begins with the same Poplar and Bamboo core featured on the Standard and TDF. The PYL begins with a lighter weight Poplar and Paulownia composition. On both models, we then mill two custom programmed channels about 30mm in from the edge, running parallel to the sidecut. SINTERED SPEC. POPLAR BAMBOO POWERDRIVE RAIL This is the term we use and is the grey zone many companies play in. We call it Sintered Spec because it s hardness and chemical properties are very close to true sintered and it s on-snow performance is also very close to true sintered - but it s formed using the extrusion process. How? Well the raw material is actually pre-consumer recycled (meaning it never left the factory) sintered base material. So while the heating and extrusion process has softened it slightly, it s still much harder than true Extruded. POPLAR Inserted into these channels are pre-bent bamboo stringers wrapped in carbon. The end result is a highly responsive core that precisely matches and compliments the outline of each board. From intuitive turn initiation, solid edge hold and explosive release, the PowerDrive core is constantly active. (PYL, Optimistic) SINTERED TRUE. PAULOWNIA POWERDRIVE RAIL Just like it says. Pellets or course powder is pressed until it forms a solid. There are several suppliers for our entire industry and they each have different codes for them, depending on the colour and transparency. These codes can make it seem like you re getting many different kinds and grades of sintered but they re all pretty much the same as far as you and I will ever tell. True Sintered is harder and more expensive than extruded and it can be faster for those that ride aggressively fast. But to do that, it needs to be waxed and prepared for local conditions. 4.
