Fibreglass is the most popular form of hull construction available today. Its style, gleaming finish and immaculate detailing are simply not possible with traditional boat-building methods. The bright, shiny exterior gelcoat is a fine, flexible skin of plastic which forms a tough and decorative protection for the hull. However, with time, fibreglass degrades and becomes chalky, dull and crazed. FIBREGLASS BOATS

FIBREGLASS BOATS MAINTENANCE When a fibreglass boat is new, little maintenance, if any, is required above the waterline. However, after two or three years, gelcoats appear to lose their lustre and shine. This can be rejuvenated by the use of suitable marine polishes and cleaners. (Refer to Boatcare & Maintenance-page 63) Eventually, the gelcoat has to be repainted to reproduce the original gloss. Moored craft will require an annual application of antifouling below waterline areas. (Refer to Antifouling-page 32) REPAINTING When it becomes obvious that boat care products can no longer keep your craft looking smart, it is time to repaint. A single pack enamel or a two pack polyurethane system is available to accommodate individual boat owners' requirements. SURFACE PREPARATION 1. Remove all traces of wax by wiping down the gelcoat with epoxy thinner. Change soiled rags regularly with new ones to prevent contamination. Scrub surface thoroughly with a marine detergent. (Refer to Ancillary Products: Eco-Wash-page 59). 2. Wash the surface thoroughly with fresh water. If the water breaks into small droplets, contamination such as wax, grease or oil is still present. Repeat until the surface wets out evenly. 3. Clean out, sand and fill all surface defects with OceanMaster Everfill Epoxy Resin Filler or Epomast Epoxy Fairing Compound. (Refer to Boatbuilding Products-page 40) 4. Sand the gelcoat or previously painted surface to a homogeneously matt finish by hand or by using an orbital sander. Care should be taken during the surface preparation as any imperfection will later be highlighted by the new gloss finish. 02

OSMOSIS Osmosis can occur in fibreglass hulls when water passes through a semi-permeable membrane such as gelcoat, collecting in voids in the laminate to form blisters. OceanMaster has developed proven and effective epoxy resin coating systems that offer protection against osmosis for both existing and new fibreglass hulls. Treatment of severe osmosis requires more technical information than is possible to detail here. Please contact OceanMaster for technical advise. 10 FIBREGLASS BOATS REPAIRING ISOLATED OR MINOR OSMOSIS This repair system can be used on fibreglass hulls that have a small number of blisters spread randomly over the hull. The blisters should only be between the gelcoat and the laminate. SURFACE PREPARATIONS Carefully remove the blisters by grinding back to a sound, clean substrate. Wash the area thoroughly with fresh water to remove salt, dirt and any soluble residues. Allow to dry thoroughly for several days or force dry with a heated blow dryer. Primer - 1 coat OceanMaster Epoguard Epoxy Anti-Osmosis Coating on the affected areas. Filler - When the Epoguard is ' tack-free', fill voids with OceanMaster Everfill Epoxy Resin Filler or OceanMaster Epomast Epoxy Fairing Compound. Sand to required smoothness. Primer - 2 more coats of Epoguard Epoxy Anti-Osmosis Coating. (Total of 3 coats Epoguard Epoxy Anti-Osmosis is required.) Undercoat - 2 coats OceanMaster Everguard Epoxy Undercoat. 11 FIBREGLASS BOATS REPAIRING OF EXTENSIVE BLISTER DAMAGE Surface preparations Remove all traces of existing antifouling and previous undercoats until the original gelcoat surface. Open up all blisters by grinding. In case where the damaged is extensive, it may not be practical to open each blister individually. Sandblasting or gelcoat peeling will leave a generally fair but pitted surface while ensuring that all the blisters are exposed. High pressure wash to remove salt, dirt and any soluble residues. Repeat washing process until hull is clean. The laminate throughout the hull structure is then allowed to dry. This drying process may take several weeks. Monitor the hull drying process. A moisture meter is used to determine the moisture content of the hull during the drying process. Usually, a 2 to 3% hull moisture content is considered dry enough for the application of the coating system. A simpler method which a boat owner can use is to tape a 150mm x 150mm of thick clear plastic to several locations on the hull. The edges are tightly sealed with an exterior grade masking tape. As the hull dries, moisture will condense on the plastic sheet. Remove and replace new sheets every few days. When the hull is near its lowest possible moisture content, little or no condensation will appear inside the plastic. Primer - 1 coat OceanMaster Epoguard Epoxy Anti-Osmosis Coating on the hull. Filler - When the Epoguard is 'tack-free', fill voids with OceanMaster Everfill Epoxy Filler or OceanMaster Epomast Epoxy Fairing Compound. Sand to required smoothness. Primer - 2 more coats of Epoguard Epoxy Anti-Osmosis Coating. (Total of 3 coats Epoguard Epoxy Anti-Osmosis is required.) Antifouling - 2 coats OceanMaster Antifouling to owner's choice. (Refer to Antifouling- page 32) 07

EVERSEAL EPOXY TIMBER PRESERVATIVE Hardens and densifies timber. Permanently seals out moisture.

Wooden boats will need more initial protection and regular maintenance than one built of fibreglass, steel or aluminium. Modern paint technology from OceanMaster gives a much longer-lasting, better finish than traditional methods. Sheathing the timber with OceanMaster Evershield Epoxy Sheathing Resin and Sheathing Fabric offers a completely joint free impermeable moisture barrier on hulls and decks. WOODEN BOATS

WOODEN BOATS MAINTENANCE New coats of paint will look good for the first one to three years. Over time, deterioration of the finish coats usually appears around topsides and waterline areas. This can be rejuvenated by the use of suitable marine polishes and cleaners. (Refer to Boat care & Maintenance - page 63) Eventually, repainting will be necessary to reproduce the original gloss. If damage is sustained to your paint system and bare timber is exposed, always touch up with appropriate primers, undercoats and finishing coats to avoid moisture seepage into the timber. This will prevent the possibility of dry rot in these areas Moored craft will require an annual application of an antifouling below waterline areas. (Refer to Antifouling - page 32) REPAINTING When it becomes obvious that boat care products can no longer keep your craft looking smart, it is time to repaint. A single pack enamel, two pack polyurethane and epoxy sheathing system are available to accommodate individual boat owners requirements. SURFACE PREPARATION 1. Moisture in the timber will prevent the proper adhesion of the paint. Surfaces must be free of contamination i.e. salt, dirt, dust, oil or grease. 2. Oily timbers such as teak should be thoroughly sanded and degreased with epoxy thinners before painting. Apply thinners with a brush or by swabbing with a clean rag. 3. Do not use a disc or belt sander on hulls because of the risk of accidentally digging in and scarring the surface. Use orbital sanders or long hand-sanding boards. 4. When coating new timber, ensure adequate sanding is carried out to give a good key for the first coat. 5. When repainting over an existing paint system, sand surface to a matt and even finish. It is recommended to remove the old paint if the adhesion is doubtful. 6. Where previously antifouled underwater surfaces are involved, wet sanding is recommended to avoid breathing toxic dust. (Refer to Antifouling - pg 32) 7. Do not leave prepared areas on wooden boats unprimed for long periods. Ensure the first coats of undercoat are applied as soon as possible after the primer has dried to reduce surface temperatures when exposed to bright sunlight. 10

PREVENTION OF DRY ROT When dry rot occurs, the timber deteriorates as the fungus attacks the fibres, causing them to disintegrate and leave the timber soft, powdery and spongy. Dry rot can spread very quickly by the infection of untreated areas with air-borne fungus spores. For dry rot to breed and multiply, four simultaneous factors are involved: 1. Low light values (sunlight will kill the spores). 2. High humidity (moist warm air). 3. Inadequate air movement (lack of internal ventilation). 4. Unprotected timber (food for the fungus spores). When dry rot is detected, surgery is the only real cure. Prevention is a far more preferable course than having to cut out and replace damaged woodwork. Just as the OceanMaster Evershield Epoxy Sheathing System can prevent marine organisms from entering the hull from the outside, OceanMaster Everseal Epoxy Timber Preservative protect timber fibres from attack in the boat s interior and other exposed wood surfaces. WOODEN BOATS OceanMaster EVERSEAL EPOXY TIMBER PRESERVATIVE An ultra low viscosity two pack epoxy resin solution used as a primer for timber surfaces prior to applying a wide range of paint and varnish. This product can also be used as an aid to sealing and densifying soft timber type surfaces to reduce moisture uptake. If the boat spends time in water, it will be particularly prone to attack from rot and fungus. Pre-treatment with OceanMaster Everseal Epoxy Timber Preservative is therefore vital. Easy application Hard tough cured film Simple 1:1 mixing ratio for easy measurement of components Suitable for most types of wood. MIXING AND APPLICATION The timber should be thoroughly dry. The mixed Everseal should be diluted with epoxy thinner (OceanMaster Thinner T500) up to 50% by volume for maximum penetration of the first coat. For subsequent coats, the thinner content should be decreased to 25%, third and subsequent coats no thinner required. Up to four coats of Everseal should be applied where full saturation and sealing are required. Allow enough time between coats for wet-on-tacky application for best results. If this is not practical, allow overnight drying, wipe surface with wet cloth, sand and allow to dry before applying the subsequent coat. OceanMaster EVERSEAL EPOXY TIMBER PRESERVATIVE ultra low viscosity formula allows optimum penetration into the timber to seal off moisture. 11

Wood in itself is a natural beauty of its own. A well applied varnish will enhance this natural beauty and also protect the wood against biological breakdown. Most boat owners today prefer a little bright work which requires a marine varnish. OceanMaster offers a selection of products to meet the individual boat owner s choice. VARNISHING

VARNISHING APPLYING VARNISH OceanMaster Everseal Epoxy Timber Preservative can be used as a primer and sealer coat prior to varnishing. If this is not an option, the first coat of varnish applied is thinned with the appropriate thinner. This will ensure good penetration of the timber surface and adhesion of subsequent coats. Varnishing is usually applied by brushing, although roller application can be effective on large flat surfaces. Brush out the varnish with firm strokes along the wood grain. After the first coat has dried, the surface will appear rough due to the exposed end grain of the timber. The surface is then sanded down using a 280 to 320 grit sandpaper. Always sand along the grain of the timber. Apply subsequent coats taking into considerations of the varnish recoating time. Sanding in between coats is recommended. For interior work, apply a minimum of three coats. Exterior works require a minimum of five coats. As the number of coats increases, the level of gloss will increase as will the depth of the luster within the varnish. CLIPPER PLUS GLOSS Clipper Plus Gloss is a clear, high gloss one pack marine grade varnish. It has built in ultra-violet protection and good surface film flexibility. Clipper Plus Gloss is easily applied with a good quality brush. A tough finish can be achieved that can last for many years. CLIPPER PLUS SATIN Clipper Plus Satin one pack varnish is designed for application on the interior finishing of marine crafts. It is applied as a topcoat over several build-up coats of Clipper Plus Gloss. TIMBERGUARD Timberguard is a quick drying, impregnating wood oil & varnish. It provides a hard wearing finish suitable for both interior and exterior applications. Timberguard provides an enhancing UV shield that also repels moisture, prevents warping, swelling and oxidization/graying of timber. POLYGLOSS POLYURETHANE CLEAR GLOSS Polygloss Polyurethane Clear Gloss is a two pack coating offering excellent spray characteristics combined with fast film dry. It has excellent resistance to scratches, water and alcohol and onboard chemicals. Developed for interior and shaded exterior use, it can be fully cut and polished when used as a clear finishing system on table tops and bar counters. EVERSEAL EPOXY TIMBER PRESERVATIVE Everseal Epoxy Timber Preservative is a two pack timber primer and sealer designed for all applications where the ultimate in protection to bare timber is required prior to the application of any nominated paint system. Everseal Epoxy Timber Preservative prevents dry rot in timber and is suitable as a sealer prior to a varnish system. (For full product details refer to OceanMaster Products Listing page-47) 18

VARNISHING HOW TO ACHIEVE THE ULTIMATE FINISH Have you ever stood back at some stage and admired the gleaming varnish work on someone s boat and wondered how they did it? Well, it is not that difficult and just requires a lot of patience. The final finish obtained will be rewarding and is a challenge to the mind and the spirit. Preparation is the key to a good finish and hurrying will inevitably lead to failure. Degreasing: Before sanding, be sure the bare wood surface is clean and well degreased. One of the best ways is to use a solvent, OceanMaster Epoxy Thinner T500 works well. The purpose of sanding is to create a mechanical bond or tooth between two layers of finish. In addition, sanding also flattens the surface creating a smoother surface and improving the appearance of the subsequent coats. Let s start at the beginning. SANDING Bare wood should normally be prepared by sanding with a 220 grit paper. Always sand along the grain. Anything much finer than this will not create adequate adhesion for that ever so important first coat. A 320 grit paper should come next to help knockoff the raised grain after the first few coats. Once the grain fills and closes, switch to 360 wet or dry. 360 will offer enough adhesion without taking off too much varnish. Stick with 360 right through until the end. Switching to 400 somewhere prior to your final coat is a good idea. For existing varnish that is intact, sand surface using 280 grit or finer dry abrasive paper. VARNISH BRUSH Although the tendency to use a foam brush for the ultimate in convenience may be great, there is absolutely nothing as satisfying as a good quality, natural bristle varnish brush. A true varnish brush will have slightly shorter bristles in order to "bite" into a heavier product like marine varnish. This makes for a slightly stiffer bristle. Check the bristle ends. A good brush will have split ends (just like split hair). This will determine how well the brush will smooth the varnish as well as how well it will draw the air from the finish. 19

VARNISHING BRUSHING TECHNIQUE OceanMaster Varnishes possess unique flowing qualities. These qualities are achieved when the coating is thinned correctly, applied evenly and worked on as little as possible. In general, brush the coating quickly, allowing the bubbles and brush marks to flow-out unaided by any further brushing action. The trick is to, always move on and don't look back. Perfecting this technique will produce mirror-like results with remarkable ease Bristles are not bent much, and will spread a thinned varnish well, but if the varnish is not thinned enough, and the brush is held as shown, there will be drips and sags. 2. Bristles are bent considerably. It is necessary to do this when using a more viscous varnish. Varnish should be brushed out in a thin film so as not to leave drips and sags. 3. Bristles are bent along the width of the brush. The trailing bristles blend in the overlapping part while the leading bristles apply the varnish to a dry surface. Brush marks in the wet varnish film can be entirely be eliminated by brushing in this manner. THINNING Proper thinning of the varnish is very important. If you apply the first coat of varnish full strength, the entire varnish system will adhere to a coat that is sitting on top of the wood. Therefore, significant thinning (50% or 1/2 & 1/2) of the first coat is very important. A very thin "sealer" coat will give maximum penetration and good grip for the subsequent system. Once the sealer coat have been applied, varnish should be thinned 15-20%, if the varnish is not flowing well or it feels "draggy" possibly due to weather conditions, add another 5% of thinner to make it a bit more user friendly. If the varnish is thinned properly air bubbles will break easily and the coating of varnish will settle without a blemish. PREPARING THE VARNISH Do not shake the can because unlike paint there is nothing to settle out. Shaking only makes the varnish foam. This will make application difficult, as the air bubbles in the varnish coating will slowly break, leaving little craters which may or may not flow out. Try to ensure that you avoid doing anything that introduces air bubbles and dust into the product at all times. The only exception to this rule is for a Satin finish where some slight settling of satin additive may have occurred. In this case use a wide spatula or stirring stick and with a gentle lifting action stir any settlement back in. Avoid the intake of air into the varnish by stirring too vigorously. Pour the amount of varnish to be used through a paint strainer into a paint pot. Close the original can immediately. 20

VARNISHING TECHNIQUE If you have a piece of timber to varnish with a flat area and an edge detail, varnish the edge first for a distance, then go back and work on the flat portion for the same distance. Lightly remove any runs or build up of varnish at the edge that may have developed. To keep a wet edge, apply the product to the surface and work the brush back into the wet varnish already applied. As you deposit the varnish, solvent will evaporate from it. The varnish will start to loose its wet edge. Do not attempt to go back over the area once the surface starts to set up. If you miss an area, leave the varnish to dry. Sand surface and re-apply the entire section of the timber. Avoid too heavy a film thickness as it may cause drying problems and wrinkling. It is always better to apply two thin coats than one thick coat. VARNISHING SANDING BETWEEN COATS After a couple of coats, depending on your expertise with a brush or the amount of dust and dirt in the air, you may want to sand the surface lightly to get rid of the inevitable bits that seem to fall into the surface grit paper should be used for this. This should take sufficient varnish off the high spots, leaving the low spots which will help fill the grain of the timber. Sanding between coats is required to ensure optimum adhesion between coats and to create a smooth undercoat. Thorough sanding is important. If you are looking for a show quality finish, it is essential that the finish is dead flat. This can only be accomplished with serious block sanding. In most cases, this style of sanding will remove more varnish than is necessary but does produce the mirror finish that goes on forever look. FINAL COATS It is then a matter of repeating this exercise until the required gloss and piano finish is obtained. Sanding of final coats should be carried out with grit paper. 21

Steel and Aluminium have their own particular set of problems in a marine environment. Surface preparation is the key to successful painting or re-painting these materials. STEEL AND ALUMINIUM BOATS

STEEL AND ALUMINIUM BOATS MAINTENANCE New coats of paint will look good for the first one to three years, Over time, staining of finish coats usually appears around topsides and waterline areas. This can be rejuvenated to some extent by the use of suitable marine polishes & cleaners. (Refer to Boatcare & Maintenance - pg 63) Eventually, repainting will be necessary to reproduce the original gloss. Metal construction, especially steel, corrodes when exposed to a marine environment. If damage is sustain to your paint system, always touch up with appropriate primers, undercoats and finish coats to avoid deterioration of the surface. PREPARING PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES 1. Wash the surface thoroughly with fresh water. 2. Sand any remaining gloss to a matt even finish. Remove any loose or flaky paint. 3. Bare areas of exposed metal should be prepared as for new surfaces and coated with appropriate primer. 4. Fill all imperfections with OceanMaster Everfill Epoxy Resin Filler or Epomast Epoxy Fairing Compound. Sand to required smoothness. 5. Previously antifouled surfaces should be washed down before applying new coats. 24

OPTIONAL COATING SYSTEMS FOR STEEL OceanMaster Marine Coatings Systems for steel vessels represents commonly employed surface coatings and anti-corrosive protection of steel vessel, all of which are successful in their own right. The success or failure of protective coatings over steel surface is predetermined by the standard of preparation on the steel substrate itself. The most effective method for the removal of millscale, rust and old coatings is by grit blasting. However, if this method is not practical, hand or power tools are commonly used. The processes of steel corrosion and effects in a marine environment are outside the scope of this manual. The protection of steel hulls is a highly specialized technique and the two basic systems shown in this manual should not be considered as the only ones available. There are many other product types available, which are not in this manual. Materials as zinc rich coatings and others have been purposefully omitted because of the requirement of specialised equipment for application. STEEL AND ALUMINIUM BOATS SYSTEMS FOR FINISHING OR REFURBISHING ALUMINIUM VESSELS Aluminium is often chosen in favour of steel as it can result in a lighter structure. It is also prone to corrosion if untreated or damaged. Attention to the surface preparation before painting can save you considerable difficulties, costly repairs and maintenance in the future. 34 STEEL AND ALUMINIUM BOATS PREPARATION OF NEW ALUMINIUM SURFACES New aluminium has a greasy residue on the surface which must be removed. Although the aluminium surface barely corrodes, a thin layer of oxidation can be formed. THERE ARE THREE STEPS IN PREPARING ALUMINIUM BEFORE PAINTING. 1. DEGREASING On production, aluminium usually has a roll-forming oil deposited on it. This must be removed by washing the surface down thoroughly using epoxy thinner (OceanMaster Thinner T500 works well) and clean rags, changing the rags frequently to avoid contamination. 2. ABRADING a) GRIT BLASTING: is the best method of surface abrading. Sand grade should be 44/20 or finer and must be completely free from iron, salt and other contaminants. b) DISC GRINDING: involves surface grinding and flushing welds, using right angle head rotary surface grinders fitted with 60 grit aluminium oxide discs. Where whip sand blasting is not possible, this system is perfectly satisfactory. b) HAND ABRADING: may be carried out on small craft and aluminium spars using 120 wet and dry paper. 3. ACID ETCHING OceanMaster ALUMINIUM PREP is designed for cleaning and etching aluminium surfaces prior to a chosen paint system. This solution is allowed to work on the substrate and MUST be washed away by thorough fresh water scrub down. 30

PROTECTIVE PRIMER FOR ALUMINIUM After carrying out the above-mentioned procedure, the first coat of OceanMaster Universal Primer should begin immediately once the aluminium is thoroughly dry. This should be achieved within a 6 to 12 hours time frame. FILLING AND FAIRING Aluminium and steel vessels usually require filling and fairing. This should be carried out after the recommended primer has been applied. (Refer to Boatbuilding Products - pg 40) ELECTRICAL/OSMOTIC INFLUENCES/CATHODIC PROTECTION Owners of Steel or Aluminium constructed vessels must be aware of outside influences such as stray welding current and stray current that may damage a coating system below the waterline. FURTHER INFORMATION This chapter is designed as a guide to products and procedures for painting Steel & Aluminium vessels. However, owing to the complexity of the subject, it is not possible to cover all specific details comprehensively. More information can be obtained by contacting us directly. 37 For your boat to give its best performance, it is necessary to keep the underwater areas in a clean condition. Among the advantages of a clean hull are better fuel economy and speed. ANTIFOULING

ANTIFOULING WHAT IS ANTIFOULING Antifouling refers to the coating material commonly used on the underwater hull and other marine equipment to reduce the settlement and inhabits the growth of marine life. This is due to the presence of biocides the active compounds on the interface between the coating and sea water. OceanMaster produces a selection of antifouling for yachts, power boats, small craft and commercial vessels. Each type of antifouling offers various advantages and limitations. This section is designed as your guide to antifouling, their main properties, functions and effectiveness to enable you to select the correct type for your boat. Propellers and shafts require specialized set of products. (Refer to Propspeed Propellers & Shafts Antifouling - pg 60) ANTIFOULING TYPES The type, material and purpose of your boat will dictate the antifouling to use. High speed craft, high fouling areas and performance-conscious boat owners would require a hard, non-soluble product to prevent the antifouling from wearing off the hull too quickly. Cruising boat owners who want all round best antifouling performance but at the same time want to eliminate all the hard pre-season maintenance work. OceanMaster HARD RACING Hard Racing Antifouling is a heavy-duty contact-leaching antifouling based on high levels of copper and organic toxins offering protection against all forms of marine growth. With proper surface preparation and correct application, OceanMaster Hard Racing antifouling offers long terms protection even in the most severe conditions. For Use On: All types of crafts including high speed power boats and yachts where multiseason effective fouling protection is required. Recommended for use on primed GRP, steel, timber and ferro cement hull. ADVANTAGES May be cleaned down without recoating Fast drying Effective against all forms of marine growth Easily sanded before recoating Apply between tides LIMITATIONS Cannot be used on aluminium hulls, outdrives or saildrives Build-up of old antifouling if not sanded back before recoating 34

ANTIFOULING SCHEMATIC ILLUSTRATION OF WORKING MECHANISMS Hard Antifouling Hard Antifouling works on a principle known as contact leaching. The resin of a hard antifouling has a high proportion of insoluble resin which does not allow it to erode. After application, the paint film dries to a hard, burnishable surface that is porous. The film is packed with biocides which leach out on contact with water to prevent any fouling growth. One of the main benefits of hard antifouling is its resistance to abrasion and rubbing. This is ideal for fast powerboats and vessels moored in drying out mud berths or areas of fast tidal water movement. Hard Contact Leaching Antifouling Seawater Seawater Biocides leaches out to prevent fouling growth. Biocides Film thickness remains unless surface is wiped/ scrubbed or when boat is used regularly. New In Use Self-Polishing Antifouling Self-Polishing Antifouling is designed to erode or ablate at a controlled rate. This is achieved by engineering the solubility of the paint resin so that the active ingredient is leached into the water. The depleted film left behind is so weak that it polishes right off as the boat moves through the water. This controlled erosion results in a continuously renewed surface, with fresh toxins always available for the prevention of fouling attachments. This type of antifouling is not always suitable for high speed craft as the action against the water may reduce the thickness of the film too quickly, leading to premature fouling. Self-Polishing Antifouling Seawater Seawater Original film thickness Biocides Reducing thickness of antifouling results in a layer of fresh biocides on the surface. 41 APPLYING ANTIFOULING THE IMPORTANCE OF APPLYING THE RIGHT THICKNESS OF ANTIFOULING OceanMaster antifouling contains toxins which are effective against barnacles, weeds, slime and other types of marine growth. The product must be applied at the recommended thickness film over a clean, well-prepared surface. ANTIFOULING Thinning of the antifouling is normally not required. When applying in hot weather, up to 15% OceanMaster Thinner T100 may be needed. However, the antifouling application must still be based on quantity of antifouling calculated for the job. (Refer to Antifouling Calculation - page 36) When using a two-component epoxy undercoat, it is good practice to apply the first coat of antifouling while the epoxy undercoat is at its tack free stage. This improves the adhesion of the antifouling greatly and reduces the surface preparations required if the epoxy undercoat is allowed to fully cure. It is also good practice to pre-coat areas where water turbulence are greatest. This includes the waterlines, leading edges of keels, rudders, propeller struts etc. Give these areas an extra coat or two with any leftover antifouling when the rest of the hull has been completed. The product overcoating time and launching time should be followed closely. To obtain the best results, it is essential to use the right quantity and therefore thickness of antifouling. RE-APPLYING ANTIFOULING Cleaning Down: Hose down underwater areas or high pressure water wash with clean fresh water to remove slime, defective or exhausted antifouling residues and allow to dry. Inspect for loose, flaky or otherwise defective areas. Feather all edges and surface imperfections. Follow with a through fresh water wash down and allow surface to dry. Primer/Undercoat: Spot prime on the defective areas with the recommended coating system and products. Fibreglass hull - if signs of underwater blistering are evident in the exterior gelcoat or laminate surfaces, refer to Advice on Painting Fibreglass Boats for details on repair. Antifouling: When recoating antifouling, it is important to wet-sand the existing antifouled surfaces thoroughly before applying fresh coats. 37

ANTIFOULING CHANGING ANTIFOULING TYPE A boat owner at times may wish to make changes to the antifouling type. In most cases this is possible. However a compatibility check should always be carried out. If unsure, the best option is to totally remove the old antifouling, apply the appropriate primer and apply fresh coats to the recommended film thickness. ANTIFOULING CALCULATION Quick estimates for Antifouling: Based on two coats minimum requirements. Fin-keel sailboats Round-hull sailboats Planing-hull powerboats Displacement-hull powerboats feet metres litre litre litre litre HEALTH & SAFETY Antifouling are toxic materials and care must be taken when handling the product. Always provide adequate ventilation during use. Avoid contact with skin and eyes and breathing of dust vapour or spray. Wear eye protection and gloves during use. 38

The traditional skills and materials of boat building are combined with today s technologies in many new and different ways. Modern boat design places high demands on innovative boat building products and construction techniques. BOAT BUILDING PRODUCTS

BOAT BUILDING PRODUCTS GLUING WITH OceanMaster PREPARATION OF TIMBER The timber should be well-seasoned, dry and clean. Cross hatch or sand the surface at 30 degree to the grain in both directions with coarse grit open cut abrasive. Drip a few drops of water on the surface of the timber. If the water immediately spreads out and soaks into the surface, the timber is ready for gluing. If it beads up, the surface is contaminated, perhaps by machine lubricant, wax or other types of contaminants. Sand down surface and repeat the water droplet test. 4. Resinous timbers such as teak, are often best glued straight after machining. When this is not pratical, machined surfaces should be treated before gluing with a surface wipe down with epoxy thinners (OceanMaster Thinner T500). Allow three to five minutes for the thinner to flash-off before preparing surface by cross hatching. It is best to apply the glue within 20 to 30 minutes after this surface cleaning process. PREPARATION OF FIBREGLASS When gluing an exterior gelcoat surface, fine sand to remove the gloss, followed by degreasing with epoxy thinner (OceanMaster Thinner T500). On interior gelcoat surfaces, solvent wipe with epoxy thinner to remove the wax layer and other contaminations. Sand surface to a matt finish look before gluing. When bonding to the glass laminate itself, sand thoroughly with a disc grinder to cut away the whole of the slightly sticky resin surface. Remove all dust. OceanMaster EVERGLUE EPOXY RESIN GLUE EVERGLUE is a non-staining, high-strength, gap-filling twocomponent epoxy resin adhesive. Supplied ready-to-use, it only requires to be mixed with hardener at two parts of resin to one part of hardener by volumes. It is particularly suitable for all high-stress joints which will be exposed to, or continuously immersed in salt water. OceanMaster RESORCINOL RESIN MARINE GLUE This is a high-strength, waterproof marine and exterior synthetic resin glue. It complies with BS 1204/1965 Type Weather Boil Proof, Gap Filling and Close Contact. It is an excellent product for all interior and exterior joints in wooden marine construction, and particularly suitable for all lamination work, deck beams, mast and spars etc. Resorcinol Glue produces a dark glue line when cured. 40

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR SUCCESSFUL BONDING Ensure joint surfaces are sanded/degreased/free of surface residuals and contamination. Thoroughly mix the resin and hardener in its correct ratio. Apply the glue to both surfaces of the substrates to be bonded. High cramping pressures should be avoided. Excessive glue squeeze out will result in starved glue joints and possible joint failure. Allow adequate curing before releasing cramping pressure. A longer clamping time is always better than a shorter one. JOINT DESIGN Before bonding, it is important to consider the likely load that the joint could undergo. Shear or tensile produces sound joints, whilst peel should be avoided as they fracture easily. BOAT BUILDING PRODUCTS SHEER STRESS TENSILE STRESS PEEL STRESS PREPARATION OF OTHER TYPES OF SURFACES Different materials may be bonded with Everglue. The strength of the bond is always related to the surface preparation or the substrates. Thorough removal of all traces of grease, wax, dirt and other loose surface deposits. (e.g. rust, scale, paint, etc) is essential to obtain maximum strength. 46 BOAT BUILDING PRODUCTS FILLING AND FAIRING WITH OceanMaster Regardless of the construction material used in boat-building, some filling or fairing is necessary for a top quality finish. When filling screw or nail holes, ensure that all dust has been removed and apply Everfill Epoxy Resin Filler, leaving the hole very slightly over-filled. Once sanded, no further filling will be required. It is advisable to use predrilled and countersunk screw fastenings when working on wooden boats. Nails tend to pull the timber fibres below the true surface of the hull and after final painting, the timber often slowly returns to its original position. This leaves a slight hollow, giving the impression that the filler has shrunk when in fact, the area around the filler has actually swollen. OceanMaster EVERFILL EPOXY RESIN FILLER Everfill Epoxy Resin Filler is usually used on small scale filling or general repair work. Excellent non-sagging characteristics makes it easy to apply and sand. Forms a strong, permanent water proof filler and will bond to a variety of substrates. OceanMaster EPOMAST EPOXY FAIRING COMPOUND Epomast Epoxy Fairing Compound smooth mixing and application characteristics make it ideal for filling and fairing on larger surface areas. The product s low specific weight and long pot life makes it ideal for use extensively as a fairing compound without adding much weight to the substrate. Epomast has been designed for good hold-up on vertical surfaces. This lightweight formulation is easy to sand, and will bond well to a variety of substrates including fibreglass and timber, and metal surfaces with suitable surface preparation. SEALING & PRIMING TIMBER WITH OceanMaster OceanMaster has developed a high performance two-pack epoxy timber preservatives for use on all new construction and is ideally suited for repair work. The product effectively seals out moisture, hardens the surface and densifies the timber to prevent dry rot. If the boat spends time in water, it will be particularly prone to attack from rot and fungus. Pre-treatment with OceanMaster Everseal Epoxy Timber Preservative is therefore vital. Please refer to page 11 on how to mix and apply. OceanMaster EVERSEAL EPOXY TIMBER PRESERVATIVES An ultra low viscosity two pack epoxy resin solution. Used as a primer for timber surfaces prior to applying a wide range of paint and varnish finishes. Everseal is also an ideal base coat before the application of a clear varnish. It provides a clear coating on its own when used as a multiple coating system for the interior of wooden hulls. FURTHER INFORMATION This section is designed as a guide to the range of OceanMaster boatbuilding products available. However, owing to the complexity of the subject, it is not possible to cover all specific details exhaustively. For more details please contact OceanMaster for more details. 42

BOAT BUILDING PRODUCTS OceanMaster EVERSHIELD EPOXY SHEATHING SYSTEM Many boat owners feel that sheathing is a job for experts. This is not true, as the total sheathing operation is quite simple and can be approached with confidence by any amateur. The Sheathing System OceanMaster sheathing system provides a completely joint-free impermeable moisture barrier, minimizing water ingress in new single skin edge glued, multiple skin diagonal planked, laminated or plywood construction hull. The system requires the application of epoxy filler, a layer of sheathing fabric with epoxy resin, followed by an additional coat of epoxy resin and a coat of epoxy undercoat. This forms a hard abrasion resistant skin over the timber hull provides an excellent base for the topside paint and under-water antifouling system. 49 BASIC SHEATHING TECHNIQUE OceanMaster Evershield Epoxy Resin used in conjunction with OceanMaster Sheathing Fabrics provides a completely joint-free impermeable moisture barrier, minimizing water ingression in wooden craft. Careful measuring of the epoxy resin and hardener then thoroughly mixing are essential for successful sheathing job. The combined epoxy resin and hardener begins a chemical reaction that transforms the mixed liquid through the following stages: BOAT BUILDING PRODUCTS 1. Open Time-The mixture remains a liquid and is workable and suitable for applying onto the sheathing fabric. Mix an amount you can use in 10 to 15 minutes each time. Transferring the mixture onto a larger flat tray will help dissipate heat given out by the epoxy. This will extend the open time of the mixture. 2. Gel- The mixture is no longer workable. The epoxy will progress from a tacky gel to a tack-free coating. While it is in between this stage, a new application of epoxy resin or undercoat will still chemically bond to the previous coat. However, once the epoxy has passed its tack-free stage, allow overnight curing before sanding surface to achieve a good mechanical bond. 3. Solid- The epoxy has cured to a solid state and can be dry sanded. At this point, the product has reached most of its strength. A new application of epoxy resin or undercoat will no longer chemically bond. The surface must be properly prepared and sanded before recoat to achieve a good mechanical bond. To optimize the amount of man hours allocated to do the job, our system recommendation is to laminate the sheathing fabric with the 1st coat of resin, applying the 2nd coat of resin to fill the filaments of the fabric and a coat of epoxy undercoat, all in the same working day. Lay up as much fabric as possible during the first half of the day. Fabric overlap must be in the direction of the water flow. Once Sundry products required during sheathing work 1. Measuring Tape 2. Utility Knife with spare Snap off blades 3. Stapler Gun 4. Large Scissors (200mm) 5. Masking Tape (38mm 50mm) 6. Large ladle (2 Nos of same size) 7. Roller Handle & Sleeves (180mm 230mm) 8. Brushes (38mm 50mm) 9. Disposable gloves the first epoxy sheathed panel shows sign of reaching its tack free stage, preparation should be made to apply the 2nd coat of epoxy resin. Same observations should be made for applying the epoxy undercoat. At the end of the working day, you would have applied a full sheathing system on a number of panels. Allow these to cure overnight. You will only need to sand down the surface area that the new sheathing panel will overlap when you start work the next day. 45

BOAT BULDING PRODUCTS Laying up the sheathing fabric: Pre-fit and trim the fabric to size. Roll the fabric neatly so that it may be easily rolled back into position later. Unroll the fabric in sections. The fabric may be held in place with masking tape or staples. Where a clean edge finish is required (eg. Boot-top lines), mask the finishing line with masking tape and bring the epoxy resin and fabric to finish on the tape. Allow the resin to reach its tack-free stage before trimming with blade and remove tape for a clean finished edge. Apply OceanMaster Evershield Epoxy Sheathing Resin. Work out wrinkles by lifting the edge of the fabric and reapply where necessary. Use a short bristle brush to remove any air traps and minor imperfections. Apply second coat of OceanMaster Evershield Epoxy Sheathing Resin once the initial coat is tack-free. Apply sufficient epoxy to completely submerge and bury all the filaments of the fabric. Apply OceanMaster Everguard Epoxy Undercoat on the second coat of Evershield Epoxy Sheathing Resin when the surface is tack-free. 46

STEPS IN SHEATHING SURFACE PREPARATIONS: Surface Sanding Surface Filling : Surface Filleting: BOAT BUILDING PRODUCTS Sand the hull surfaces using 80 grit to provide a millscale key for the epoxy. Use OceanMaster Everfill Epoxy Resin Filler to fill up all voids with a putty knife. Ensure all edges are faired and round over so that the fabric will lie smooth and flat over the timber. OceanMaster EVERFILL EPOXY RESIN FILLER Sand to a smooth finish. Edge faired and round over Everfill Epoxy Resin Filler PREPARING SHEATHING FABRIC: Pre-Cutting Laying The Fabric Precut to length the sheathing fabric. It is a good pratice to add a few inches to allow working room. Temporarily fasten the fabric where necessary using staples or masking tape. To cut a straight line, start by locating one or two fabric strands at the edge. Pull on it to remove and create a visual path to follow with a pair of scissors. 47

BOAT BUILDING PRODUCTS PREPARING AND APPLYING THE RESIN: PREPARING THE RESIN APPLYING 1st COAT OF RESIN APPLYING 2nd COAT OF RESIN When the surface is "tack-free" (firmly set but not hard), apply 2nd coat of resin. Careful measuring and thorough mixing are essential for a proper cure. Do not attempt to adjust the epoxy cure time by altering the mixing ratio. It's recommended to mix an amount that can be use within 10 to 15 minutes each time. The roller sleeves should be kept well loaded with resin, to avoid lifting of the fabric. Cloth overlaps should be in the direction of water flow. Care should be taken not to leave too much epoxy on the fabric because the fabric can have a tendency to float around. Apply sufficient thickness to completely submerge and bury all the filaments of the fabric. Using a large flat tray for the mixture will help dissipate heat given out by the epoxy. This will extend the working time of the mixture. Use a short bristle brush to remove any air bubbles and minor imperfections. APPLYING THE UNDERCOAT: Next Day UNDERCOAT SURFACE PREPARATION CONTINUE WITH SHEATHING: When the 2nd coat of Sheathing Resin is "tack-free" apply a full coat of Everguard Epoxy Undercoat. As the epoxy has been left to cure overnight it is necessary to sand down the overlap areas before applying the next panel. Lay out the fabric and apply resin using same technique acquired. OceanMaster EVERGUARD EPOXY UNDERCOAT 48 APPLYING COATING SYSTEM AFTER SHEATHING (refer page 46)

APPLYING COATING SYSTEM AFTER SHEATHING Surface imperfections must be filled and faired with an epoxy filler, followed by an appropriate undercoat to bring the surface up to a perfectly blemish free substrate ready for Topcoat Finishing. 68 RECOMMENDED BOATCARE & MAINTENANCE PRODUCTS PROPSPEED PROPELLERS & SHAFTS ANTIFOULING A non toxic coating to prevent fouling of propellers, shafts and strust What is PropSpeed? Developed in New Zealand and tested for over five years, PropSpeed s silicone-based antifouling system is suitable for all types of metal propellers and running gear. The system resists all types of marine growth, and when it has dried it feels much like a sheet of glass. Although some marine growth may still occur when a boat is stationary for extended periods, this build up will be shed when the propeller begins rotating under power. PropSpeed is an effective antifoulant for running gear that is also safe for the environment. PropSpeed prevents marine growth from bonding to metal surfaces below the water line. It works because it is slick, not toxic. Application of PropSpeed is a simple two step process beginning with a catalyzed etch primer followed by a silicone based top coat. Propspeed is an environmentally safe product and does not contain copper, tin or any other toxic substances which may cause environmental pollution. PropSpeed can be applied to any metal part below the waterline. These parts include, props, shafts, struts, rudders, bow thrusters, keel coolers, trim tabs and thru hull fittings. PropSpeed will keep your running gear free from marine growth and will increase your vessel s speed and reduce your fuel consumption. PropSpeed has been successfully tested in the harshest marine environments in the world. PropSpeed should last at least one year but many customers report up to two years of service. PropSpeed's unique foul release formulation is self cleaning. Available Pack Size: 500ml / 1 Litre Kit Amazing performance! Check out the massive oyster growth on the conventionally anti-fouled rudder and strut, and then check the prop and shaft which is coated with Propspeed. This photo is of a boat moored for two years in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. KEEP THE GROWTH OFF YOUR RUNNING GEAR WITH PROPSPEED A fouled propeller will cost you fuel, cruising speed, and comfort. Improve your boat's performance and reduce running costs with a clean propeller and an application of Propspeed. 64
