2 We all know an Irish pub is something to behold. And while we all have our personal favourites, whether it's a cosy snug or a heaving beer garden, there's probably still a few great spots you need to tick off your list. Here's our selection of Irish pubs you simply MUST visit. Mary's Bar and Hardware, Wicklow Street Confused by the hardware reference? Mary's is a cosy spot on Dublin's Wicklow Street - that just happens to be both a bar and a fully functioning hardware shop which has got to be seen to be believed!

3 The Old Thatch, Killeagh Facebook: The Old Thatch, Killeagh This Cork pub is believed to be the oldest thatched pub in Ireland - and has been in the same family since way back in the 1600s. But it's not back in the dark ages and its pub grub and friendly atmosphere make this historical spot a must-visit.

4 Matt Molloys, Westport Facebook: Matt Molloys You can hardly argue with the fact that this Mayo bar is owned by one of The Chieftains - and if he's not on tour, Matt will be there for the sessions. Have you left yet?

5 The Auld Dubliner, Temple Bar Facebook: The Auld Dubliner This Dublin boozer is popular with tourists and locals alike and is renowned for its Guiness - with live music and a great atmosphere to boot.

6 Johnnie Fox's, Glencullen It's not always snowing! Way up in the Dublin mountains, the world famous Johnnie Fox's is the highest pub in Ireland, but still just a half hour drive from the city centre so you're not too far from the trad.

7 The Beach Bar, Sligo thebeachbarsligo.com Does exactly what it says on the tin - the thatched bar sits right on the Atlantic Ocean at the unspoiled Aughris Head and goes back a whopping 300 years.

8 Crowley's, Kenmare Facebook: Crowley's Bar In this Kerry local, there's no till, you just ing the money in a box. Crowley's is well-known for a session, and their pints are as top-notch as the craic.

9 The Harbour Bar, Portrush Google: The Harbour Bar Possibly the best bar in Ireland, up in Portrush in Northern Ireland. Seaside, fabulous food, Willie the Barman and the best of links golf at Royal Portrush Golf Club. A favourite haunt for locals as well as American tourists who flock back here year on year. Live music is played most nights and the six restaurants all owned by the same proprietor are packed every night, even throughout winter. Arrive early to avoid disappointment...

10 The Local, Dungarvan Facebook: The Local And it's not even for the name alone - The Local opened its doors in 1999 and o ers up the best in Irish music. Previously Cooneys Pub, and then an electrical shop, it's been in the same family since the 1960s.

11 The Long Hall, South Great George's Street Facebook: The Long Hall This Victorian era hotspot hasn't lost any of its old-world charm. Nestled on Dublin's southside, great for a cosy pint.

12 John Benny's, Dingle Facebook: John Benny's Pub Dingle If you're heading to the Kingdom, this has got to be on your list. If you fancy a bed for the night, they even have their own self-catering apartments.

16 Tigh Neachtain, Galway Facebook: Tigh Neachtain If it's sunny in Galway, you'd be laughing if you headed for Tigh Neachtains as their people watching spot is second to none. Pus the stout and craft beers are pretty decent too.

17 Downes, Waterford Facebook: Henry Downes & Co In the same family for six generations, Downes still bottles its own whiskey, and even has a squash court on the premises. De nitely one for the list if you're in the sunny South East.

18 Brennans, Bundoran Bundoran Tourism Brennans, or The Criterion is the oldest pub in Bundoran in Donegal and is run by sisters Nan and Patricia Brennan - who are grandchildren of the original owners - is an old Irish pub as it should be, with no television or music, just chat.

19 Fagans, Moynalvey Facebook: Fagans This village pub in Co Meath o ers up plenty of live music and sports coverage in a cosy, rural atmosphere.

20 Callanan's, Cork Instant Street View This is a true gem nestled on Sullivan's Quay in Cork - and it's like a rural bar in the middle of the city. On the nights cards are being played, prepare to be told unceremoniously to move if you are sitting in a player's seat and there might even be a game of rings going. And it has got to be one of the last pubs in Ireland with the beer kegs still under the bar counter.
