I was pretty upset with myself, and the 6 weeks spent with my leg up I wanted to challenge myself to come back stronger and fitter than ever.

So, when I came back home to St Lucia I still had the thoughts of London 2012 drifting around my head.

With kitesurfing not yet an olympic discipline for 2012, the only chance I had was to get back sailing in a laser radial, a sport I had not done in 8 years.

Once all that was sorted, was time to get out on the water and train.

I went for a kitesurf on the south coast and unfortunately didnt land one of my crazy tricks and managed to break my leg. I was pretty upset with myself, and the 6 weeks spent with my leg up I wanted to challenge myself to come back stronger and fitter than ever. This also happened to be around the time when the hype about the olympics was starting in London. So, when I came back home to St Lucia I still had the thoughts of London 2012 drifting around my head. The dream started of represnting my little island at the olympics...was it even possible! With kitesurfing not yet an olympic discipline for 2012, the only chance I had was to get back sailing in a laser radial, a sport I had not done in 8 years. The first step was to sort out all of the paperwork for my Lucian citizenship (a necessity for representing your country). Once all that was sorted, was time to get out on the water and train. I spent the last 6 months of 2010 sailing pretty much everyday the weather would allow to try and regain my boat handling and get some speed was all about going to competitions to sail in a large fleet and get used to sailing with lots of other boats around. I spent the summer of 2011 in europe, competing in some ISAF World Cup events, and also at the Pre-Olympic Test event in Weymouth. It was during these events that I realised the level of competition I was up against. I learned valuable lessons at these regattas, and came home for 3 months to train harder than ever before heading off to the 1st olympic qualification event in December 2011, the ISAF World Championships in Perth, Australia. Perth was tough, as the steady 20 knot seabreezes that everyone had predicted just never showed up. The format of racing is 10 races over 6 days, and at the end of that event I had pushed my body to its limits. A result of 62nd out of 104 I was pretty happy with, the heartbeaking thing was finishing St Lucia as the 30th nation, when only the top 29 qualified for London Having got so close, and only missing out on the olympics on the last race of the regatta, I didnt want to give up their, there was one more chance to qualify at the 2012 Worlds in Germany in May I arrived back home to St Lucia in January and remotivated myself for 5 months more training to push myself up the fleet. It was in January that the SLOC (St Lucia Olympic Committee) appealed to the IOC (International Olympic Committee) as part of the tripartite commission, as I had come soo close to qualifying. The answer being no wildcard entries can be rewarded until June I find training back home very enjoyable, especially during the trade wind season, as we are blessed with beautiful constant winds and warm waters. This past season has been a tough one physically as days pretty much consisted of kitesurfing at Cas en Bas in the mornings, then sailing in Rodney Bay in the afternoons. My love of the water and enjoying whatever mother nature is throwing at me makes me enjoy my sailing and kitesurfing. Even during those longs hours of painful hiking past Le Sport, all I have to do is look at the beauty of the island the be inspired. Training went well and I went to the Worlds in Germany with a lot of optimism. Conditions in Germany were tough. Probably the hardest regatta mentally I have ever sailed in. We had varying conditions from 25 knot winds with a wind chill of 2 degrees, to 5 knot winds and 15 degrees. The weather was different everyday, which is what made racing both tough and challenging. I did not have a good start to the regatta, and at halfway missed out on the gold fleet cut (and automatic qualification) by just three points. Again, being so incredibly close to going to the olympics. The last half of the regatta was even worse, with racing very light winds, and I finished a very dissappionting 86th out of 133 boats. Not the result I was looking for! I came home from Germany pretty low, as I knew there were no more chance to qualify and my dream had ended. With the trade winds still blowing I got over my disappointment by kitesurfing a lot and rediscovering my passion the sport I love and for the island. On Monday 18th June (4 days ago), whilst taking a break from the water as Cas en Bas beach, I got a phone call asking me if I would accept a wild card entry to compete at the 2012 Olympic Games. Dreams do come true after all. Looking back at the past two years there have been many high and low points. To make dreams into a reality you really do have to ignore doubters and believe in yourself. At the very beginning I told Adam Foster about my dreams and he was a true supporter from the start, with IGY Marinas sponsoring me and helping me with funding. I started as a Front desk Agent and made my way up to my current position of Front Office Manager. Rodney Bay Marina has always been a fun and interesting place to work. My favorite time of year is the high season during the ARC where there is a lot happening, we get to participate in the Flotilla and other ARC events. Working in the high season is challenging as I have to still complete all other tasks while attending to the many customers coming to check in with the office. Every job has it challenges, but after many years of experience in a job challenges become trivial and slowly diminish. It is now fun to work under pressure and I always look forward to that time of year. I am a simple person who enjoys the finer things in life. My hobbies are exploring, on my day off I love driving to the south of the island to enjoy nature s most beautiful places in St. Lucia, the Botanical Gardens where I soak and relax in the hot springs. I love visiting our local rivers, waterfalls and the Sulphur springs, though I can t swim, I love the water. I enjoy boat rides, jet skis and any water sport activity. Just give me a life jacket and I am ready to jump in! I like to live my life one day at a time. As I am employed with IGY my goal is to move up, not necessarily at Rodney Bay Marina but any one of the IGY Marina establishments. My goal has always been to have Andy Caballero s job to be the system s Manager. My ultimate goal is to further my studies in Information Technology and one day own my own IT consultancy business. I believe I am a very unique individual, my motto in life is: Do not take the road everyone else takes, for it will only get you stuck in traffic.
