1 Official Newsletter of Pine Brook Homeowner's Association August Volume 1, Issue 7 Orcas Finish Successful Season! The PineBrookWood Orcas swim team recently completed a very successful 14th season in the Clear Creek Swim League (CCSL). The team was proud to have 215 swimmers, primarily from the Pine The 9 10 Medley and Freestyle recordbreaking team (left to right): Daniel LeBlanc, Max Finch, Noah Rudisill, Alex Borremans Brook and Brookwood sub-divisions, on our roster this year ranging from 5 to 18 years of age. The Orcas finished the regular season with a 4 1 record, beating the teams from League City, Deer Park, Harbour Tide, and Nassau Bay. Of the team s 215 swimmers, 39 achieved Champ times, earning them a trip to Galena Park to compete in the year-end CCSL Champ Meet held on Saturday, June 27. The Orcas came in third out of 20 teams, finishing only behind Pearland and Friendswood. Quite an accomplishment for two sub-divisions! The coaching staff included several high-school students who have been swimming with the Orcas for many years. These coaches worked very hard with the swimmers to continually improve their strokes. Among the many highlights from the season were the 9 10 year-old boys medley relay and freestyle relay team (pictured). Not only did they break the Orca records in both events, they are the only boys to break any CCSL records, which they accomplished at the League City meet held in mid-june. The skills and lessons learned from competitive swimming will remain with these kids throughout their lifetimes. Thanks to the Pine Brook Community Association and residents for letting the Orcas use the pool for practices during April, May, and June and for those many Saturday meets. The team would not be successful without your generosity. We look forward to seeing all of our returning swimmers, and hopefully some new faces, next spring. Annual July 4th Bike Parade This year s winner of the 4th of July bike decorating contest. Pine Brook children line up to start the annual July 4th Bike Parade. 3 Back to School - August 25 Slow down for school zones, buses, and children walking and riding bikes! Pine Brook Periodical Recycling Report Pine Brook residents are leading the way, with 80 percent of residents participating in Houston City Councilman Peter Brown s neighborhood recycling competition, according to Daniel Santamaria, director of community affairs for Brown s office. Our commitment of creating a greener city is being noticed, and we certainly thank you for your continued support, Santamaria said. Neighborhoods participating in the friendly competition are Pine Brook, Meyerland, Pineloch, Oakbrook, Westbury, Lindale Park, Old Sixth Ward, and Riverwood Estates. The top three neighborhoods will receive $1,000 (first), $500 (second), and $250 (third). The awards are tentatively scheduled to be presented Monday, Sept. 21. The monetary award will be used by the winning civic associations for revitalization and beautification projects within the community. To see the latest participation results, visit council/1. Recycling Reminder The City of Houston has asked all residents to leave at least 3 feet of space between the Recycle Bin and the Trash Container placed at the curb to allow for mechanical pick-up and dumping of the containers. It has been suggested placing one container on each side of the driveway to facilitate collection. Spark Power Bank We Challenge What You Pay For Electricity SIGN-UP ONLINE TODAY! Help Needed to Water New Trees Thank you to Lynn Guenther, Jean Taylor, Bob Flint, Rob Plaza, and Debra Goode for working together as a Human Irrigation Team (HIT) to keep our central park clean. Since February, the team has spent countless hours every week to move sprinklers around the playground, pool and basketball court. Over 120 new trees and shrubs have been planted in this park, and with the summer heat, watering the new plantings is essential for their survival. There is no irrigation south of the pool, and the community association has no money to fund a new irrigation system. Several members of the HIT team have offered to fund a new irrigation system, but in the meantime, volunteers are needed to help water while some of the team leave for upcoming vacations. If you can help, contact Debra Goode at For more information, check out our website at Increasing water safety awareness and standards FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DROWNING DROWNING CAN STILL OCCUR EVEN IF YOU KNOW HOW TO SWIM Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death in children ages 1-4 DROWNING WILL AFFECT YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW NO ONE is drown proof no matter their level of swimming ability. Falls, entrapments, and injuries lead to drowning regardless of swimming level Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of unintentional injury-related death ages A majority of people overestimate their own and their child s ability to swim, especially in a panic event. DROWNING IS QUICK AND SILENT Drowning occurs in as little as 2 Most children are out of sight or missing for less than 5 minutes and usually in the presence of 1 or both parents. 2min 4min 5min 6min minutes. Irreversible brain damage occurs in as little as 4 minutes. Most children die who are submerged for as little as 6-10 minutes. Children who drown do not scream, splash, or struggle.
