2 TENNIS RULES CLINIC The WIAA follows USTA rules for Tennis. The USTA is the sole and exclusive source of binding rules interpretations for contests involving member schools. 3 INTRODUCTION The Tennis Rules Clinic is comprised of two (2) sections: 1. Tennis Playing Rules 2. Regular and Post Season Regulations & Reminders At the end of the clinic you will need to successfully complete the FINAL EXAM to finish the clinic. After you have passed the FINAL EXAM you will be able to print a certification document for this clinic. Please keep a copy for yourself and give one to your Athletic Director.

4 SPORTS INFORMATION Each member school has a responsibility to educate its student-athletes, coaches, and other appropriate persons on State Association rules, regulations, and policies that could affect them. Further, each member school should monitor its compliance with such State Association information. Coaches are responsible for knowing the WIAA rules and assisting the AD with all eligibility issues.

5 COURTESY AVOID THE FOLLOWING Conducting loud postmortems Complaining about shots Embarrassing opponent Losing your temper, using vile language, throwing your racket or slamming a ball Sulking

6 COUNTING POINTS IN GOOD FAITH All points played in good faith stand Corrective action may be taken only after point played

7 MAKING CALLS Players make calls on own side of net Opponent gets benefit of doubt Ball touching any part of line is good Ball that cannot be called out is good

8 MAKING CALLS Requesting opponent s help Out calls corrected Player calls own shots out Partners disagreement on calls

9 MAKING CALLS Audible or visible calls Opponent s calls questioned Spectators never make calls Prompt calls eliminate two chance option Lets called when balls roll on court

10 MAKING CALLS Self Calls Ball touches player Player touches net Player touches opponent s court Player hits ball before it crosses net Player deliberately carries or double hits ball Ball bounces more than once in player s court

11 FOOT FAULTS Player warns opponent If foot faulting continues, locate an official If official is not available, player calls flagrant foot faults

12 SERVICE CALLS IN DOUBLES Receivers' partner calls the service line Receiver calls sideline and center service line Either partner may call ball that either clearly sees

13 RECEIVER READINESS Receiver plays to reasonable pace of server Receiver should make no effort to return serve if not ready If player attempts to return serve, receiver is presumed to be ready

14 DELAYS DURING SERVICE When there is a delay between the first and second serves... - Server gets one serve if server caused delay - Server gets two serves if delay caused by receiver or outside interference

15 SERVER ANNOUCES SCORE Server announces game score before first point of game and announces point score before each subsequent point of game

16 DISPUTES IN SCORING Disputes should be resolved in following order: Count all points and games agreed upon Only replay disputed points or games Play from score mutually agreeable to all players Spin racket or coin toss

17 HINDRANCES Talking during a point Grunting

18 REQUESTING AN OFFICIAL Stalling Flagrant foot faults Medical timeout Scoring dispute Pattern of bad calls

19 COACHING While players are on the court, no coaching is permissible by coaches, other adults or other players; only the recognized school coach (one person only) is allowed to coach players on the court Coaching is permissible during the break between the 1st and 2nd sets (two minutes maximum) and the 2nd and 3rd sets (10 minutes maximum) and any official suspension of play

20 STATE PARTICIPATION : By entering participants in postseason competition, each member school certifies that, barring injury, illness or unforeseen events, the team or individuals representing the school will participate in every level of competition through the completion of the state championship event : Any withdrawal or intentional forfeiture shall be considered a violation of WIAA rules and regulations, and shall be subject to penalties as determined by the WIAA Executive Board.

21 TENNIS MATCH REGULATIONS MATCH REGULATIONS - A school may not schedule more than sixteen (16) team contests for tennis. Every tennis contest must count as one (1) contest for the team and one (1) contest for the individual For the purpose of sub-varsity tennis matches, players may play up to three (3) sets against different players from opposing teams. This will be considered as one (1) contest for the individual An individual shall not play in more than twenty-three (23) contests on sixteen (16) team dates. A player can play one (1) singles match and one (1) doubles match on the same day during the regular season, and this will be considered as one (1) contest for the individual Invitational Tournaments: A. A one (1)-day invitational tennis tournament will count as one (1) contest for the team and one (1) contest individual tennis player provided the athlete does not play more than three (3) contests in one (1) day. B. A two (2)-day invitational tennis tournament will count as two (2) contests for team and two (2) contests for the individual tennis player, provided the athlete does not play more than six (6) contests in the two (2) days. C. Exception: An event scheduled over two (2) days in which only the consolation and championship semifinalists move on to the second day shall only count as a one (1) day contest for the teams entered and for the individual tennis players A team is limited to three (3) invitational tournaments per season.
