Day 3 at WOW Tennis Challenger For one of the qualifiers, The Fourth of July, American Independence day, was also a day for personal celebration. American Diana Ospina celebrated her birthday by gifting herself with a win into the main draw. The birthday girl and compatriot Elizabeth Lumpkin along with Viktoria Kisialeva, a Belarus-born player who lives and trains in Canada and Nicola Slater of Great Britain were the four qualifiers.. Ospina had another solid and impressive performance in ousting the no. 3 seed Danielle Mills, also from the U.S, 7-5, 6-0. Ospina was up 5-2 in the first set but Mills came back to tie it 5-5. Ospina said it was due to Mills raising her level of game rather than a drop in her own. Still, she was able to close out the set at 7-5 and did not allow Mills another look in. Ospina s game is solid and consistent rather than spectacular. She works the point until she has an opening. She has given up very few unforced errors. It is a mature game. This should not be unexpected as she started her pro career in Early in her career she had a rib injury at a time when she was doing well and climbing the rankings. Taking time off to recover resulted in her having to start all over again which was not easy as it meant entering the smaller tournaments when she had gotten accustomed to playing the bigger ones. So in 2007, when she contracted mononucleosis and also had surgery to remove a ganglion cyst from her wrist, and her ranking dropped from #230 to #800 in the eight months it took her to recover, it looked to be the end of her professional playing days. I didn t want to start from scratch all over again, she said, as I was at a different stage in my life. Because she did not want to repeat the previous experience she started coaching to stay in the game. During this time she fell in love and got married in September While coaching at The Sports Club of West Bloomfield in Michigan, she got hired so many times to practice with the top nationally-ranked junior boys that her own game started getting back good too. Her husband suggested entering some tournaments which she did, with

2 as of July 4, 2011 encouraging results. She doesn t play a full schedule and still has her coaching job but her love for the competitive game and support of her husband keeps her going. I feel good. I feel prepared, she said of her present form. Her main draw opponent will have to earn every point if Ospina form holds. The other American into the main draw was Elizabeth Lumpkin who put out Canadian Nikolette Budai in three sets in the second round. Lumpkin beat fellow American Elizabeth Ferris the no. 2 seed 6-2, 7-5. Lumpkin played with more intensity and aggression than Ferris and was rewarded with the win. With the wind swirling at times, the player who took the initiative won the point the majority of the time. The second set was close but Lumpkin played good defensive tennis - throwing up timely lobs and capitalizing on her own aggressive shots. Viktoryia Kisialeva, ranked #20 in Canada beat Whitney Jones the no. 6 seed from the U.S. 6-4, 6-1. Many of the games were close but Jones couldn t string enough points together to convert them into games. After losing the first set, Jones was able to hold her serve just once at 5-0. Kisialeva clinched the match when she held her own serve in a long and somewhat, tentatively played game. The last player to enter the main draw was Nicola Slater the no.8 seed. She beat Ellen Tsay the no.4 seed 6-3, 7-5. The only Brit in the tournament, Slater is no shrinking violet and she makes an interesting addition to the main draw. The Doubles event began Monday following the conclusion of the qualifying singles. Six first round matches were played with several Canadians featuring in four of them. The Canadian pair of Gabriela Dabrowski and Marianne Jodoin had the better of the Japanese pair Aiko Nakamura and Akiko Yonemura winning 7-6, 6-4; No.1 seeds Sharon Fichman and her Ukrainian partner Tetiana Luzhanska had a comfortable win over Chichi Scholl (USA) and Ling Zhang (Hong Kong) 6-4, 6-2; Guelph s Sonja Molnar and 16-year-old Carol Zhao from Richmond Hill lost 6-7, 6-7 to the no. 4 seeds Wen-Hsin Hsu of Taipei and Chanel Simmonds of South Africa; Elisabeth Abanda and her American partner Yawna Allen had a tough time losing 0-6, 1-6 to Julia Boserup of the U.S. and Kim-Alice Grajdek of Germany. KIA Kids Tennis Fair: On a bright and beautiful Monday Waterloo Public Square in downtown Waterloo was the scene of the KIA Kids Tennis Fair. As part of a promotional event for the WOW event and the game, four of the WOW participants along with the coaching staff of the Waterloo Tennis club were on hand to show off their skills and to introduce kids to tennis. As part of the entertainment the four women players Sandra Dynka, Petra Januskova, Emily Harman and Elizabeth Ferris played some doubles points with colour commentary provided by Gary Winter, WTC head pro. Two fitness trainers from the Columbia Lake Health Club had bodies performing Zumba moves to music provided by 91.5FM The Beat. A speed serving cage was set up to time the serves for Raonic wannabes. Prizes were handed out to youngsters for their participation and all had an enjoyable time.

She has already tasted success on the Challenger circuit winning the doubles title twice in the $50,000 Tevlin Challenger in Toronto in 2009 and 2010 with Fichman. Dabrowski s opponent in Tuesday s match is none other than Alison Riske, the 20-year-old from the U.S. who is ranked #118 in the world and is the tournament no.1 seed. Riske was given a wild card into this year s Wimbledon after a great showing at an event in Birmingham, England where she lost eventually to Maria Sharapova in three sets. At Wimbledon, Riske lost in the first round to the no.2 seed Vera Zvonareva in three sets 0-6, 6-3, 3-6. If both women play well, spectators will be in for a treat. Action begins with a 32- player draw qualifying tournament on Saturday July 2 at 10 a.m. This event runs to Monday July 4. Included in the qualifying draw are 14 Canadians which includes the local wild card recipient Sandra Dynka. The last four players of this event will enter into the 32-player main draw. They will be joined by fellow Canadians Sharon Fichman, Gabriela Dabrowski, and Eugenie Bouchard. The doubles event is a 16-pair draw. Last year, Canadians Elisabeth Abanda and Katarena Paliivets won the doubles crown. The draw ceremony takes place 3 p.m Sunday July 3 at the Waterloo Tennis Club.
