The contest is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. ET, with the winner to face either top-seeded Texas or Texas State on Saturday. This will mark the Spartans fourth appearance with head coach Cathy George at the helm. MSU previously advanced in 2006, 2007 and 2009, registering its top performance in 2007 with a trip to the Regional Semifinals. Scouting Michigan State Leading the squad on the outside are seniors Kyndra Abron and Jenilee Rathje. To date, Rathje has recorded 4.27 kills per set, while Abron currently boasts 3.40 kills a set. At the net, Alexis Mathews leads the Green and White in blocks with 1.29 per set. In the backcourt, Kori Moster anchors the defense with 3.96 digs per set, starting the last 25 matches as MSU s libero. Head coach Cathy George is in her seventh season at the helm of the Spartans, compiling a record of at MSU. In her 25 seasons as a head coach, George has appeared in eight NCAA tournaments, including being the first woman to coach in the NCAA Division I Final Four in During her time at MSU, the Spartans have appeared in the tournament in four of her seven seasons, including an NCAA Regional Semi-final appearance in Scouting Arizona The Wildcats enter the weekend with a overall record, while also posting an Pac-12 Conference record. Last week Arizona closed out the regular season against rival Arizona State. On Tuesday, Nov. 22, the Wildcats held off the surge from the Sun Devils as they downed ASU in four, 3-1. Arizona State got the best of the Wildcats on its home court on Saturday, Nov. 26 with a 3-1 win to end the season. The Wildcats and the Spartans have no mutual opponents on the year. Series History: MSU trails in the all-time series, 2-1. Last Meeting: MSU fell to Arizona on Sept. 2, 1990, 3-0, as a part of the Arizona Invitational. Coach: The Wildcats are coached by David Rubio, who is in his 20th season with Arizona and posts an all-time record of , going with the school. Scouting Texas The Longhorns have posted a record of 22-4, with a 15-1 Big 12 record, and enter the NCAA Tournament as the top-seeded team. Texas is led up front by Haley Eckerman who currently leads the team with 330 kills, tallying 218 of those in conference action. The Spartans were led offensively by senior Kyndra Abron s 15 kills, while freshman Kori Moster chipped in 23 digs. The Spartans closed out the 2011 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 26 with a 3-1 loss to No. 9 Penn State inside Jenison Field House. Saturday marked final match at home for MSU s five seniors - Kyndra Abron, Natalie Emro, Jenilee Rathje, Carli Weiler and Becca Zlabis - as each were honored at the conclusion of the match. Post-Season All-Conference Honors As announced by the Big Ten Conference on Nov. 29, senior Jenilee Rathje was named to the 15-member All-Big Ten team, while classmate Kyndra Abron was an honorable mention selection. Rathje became just the seventh Spartan to be named first-team All-Big Ten in consecutive seasons. She was also MSU s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Scouting Texas State The Bobcats have posted a record of 27-7, with a 15-1 Southland Conference record. Texas State is led up front by Amari Deardorff who currently leads the team with 330 kills, 169 of those have occurred in conference play. Caleig McCorquodale quarterbacks the Bobcats offense, tallying 626 assists in conference play, and 1,191 overall. The backcourt is led by Laura Whalen who currently averages 3.15 digs per set overall and 2.78 in conferences matches. Ashlee Hilbun has tallied 144 total blocks this season, while seeing 63 of those in conference play. Two weekends ago, Texas State won the Southland Spartans in the NCAA Tournament MSU will be making its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance within the last six years, with each trip under the reign of head coach Cathy George. This will also mark Michigan State s 14th overall trip in the dance. Overall, the Spartans are in tournament matches. It Starts At The Top MSU has received plenty of support this season offensively from its senior class. A group which entered Michigan State as the seventh-ranked recruiting class in the nation in 2008, the seniors added Jenilee Rathje to their class following her redshirt season. Currently this season, the seniors make-up 69-percent of the team s offense, with 455 kills coming from Rathje and 367 kills from Kyndra Abron. Defensively, the senior class makes up for 51-percent of the team s total dig tally, lead by Weiler s 232 digs. At the net, the senior class comprises 87-percent of the team s block total. Abron paces the group with the second-most on the team, 85 blocks. Weekly Conference Laurels Freshman Kori Moster was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Sept. 26. The award marked the first in Moster s career. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native concluded the first half of conference play with a pair of 20+ digs performances to earn both Big Ten Freshman of the Week and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week laurels on Oct. 24. Lucky No. 20 MSU recorded its 20th win of the regular season with a 3-1 victory over No. 7 Illinois on Friday, Nov. 18. The win marked the most regular-season victories for the Spartans under head coach Cathy George, and the most since 2001, when the Green and White tallied 21 wins prior to the post-season. This is also the most regular-season wins for Coach George since 2000, when Western Michigan recorded 22 regular-season wins. Historically, whenever the Spartans have reached the 20-win mark, they received a bid to the NCAA Tournament (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2011). Fandemonium Annually, the Spartans have found themselves as one of the national leaders in attendance among NCAA Division I teams. Michigan State has been ranked in the top-25 in average attendance in 15 of the last 16 seasons. MSU posted a program best sixth during the 1996 campaign. In the 2011 season, the Green and White finished the season ranked 18th with 2,102 fans a game. Fab Freshman Freshman Kori Moster has taken the conference by storm since being named the Spartans starting libero prior to the Green and White s match against Canisius on Sept. 10. Since then, she has moved into first among Big Ten leaders for conference-only matches with 4.74 digs per set and ranks first overall in total digs with 365. Moster has already broken two MSU freshman records - total digs and digs per set - and is tied for ninth in service aces. The Cincinnati, Ohio native is tops in digs with 451 total, and in digs per set with Moster is also tied for ninth in service aces with 30. 3
4 The Millennium Kills Club Senior Becca Zlabis is closing in on joining 18 other Spartans in the 1,000-kill club. Zlabis is only 10 shy from joining classmates Jenilee Rathje and Kyndra Abron in the 1,000-kill club. Rathje netted her 1,000th kill on Nov. 26, 2010 at Northwestern, while Abron reached the milestone on Oct. 15, 2011 at Illinois. Sitting atop the list is Jenna Wrobel ( ) with 2,292 kills. First Set Success The Spartans have been quick to pounce on their opponents this season, seeing multiple significant success in the opening set of a match. On the year, MSU boasts a record of 18-3 when taking the first set, and 3-8 when dropping set one. Preseason Recognition Prior to the 2011 season, several Spartans were recognized for their work both on and off the court. Senior Jenilee Rathje was tabbed as one of 17-members of the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. Rathje found herself on the conference coaches radars after earning first-team All-Big Ten and AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honors her sophomore campaign. As a team, the Spartans were selected to finish sixth in the conference, as selected by the conference coaches in August. Rathje was also recognized by the conference in July for her dedication to her class work. Rathje was one of 534 student-athletes to receive Big Ten Scholar Athlete distinction. In order to be recognized, each studentathlete must achieve at least a 3.7 or higher for the corresponding academic year. Playing With CLASS Senior Jenilee Rathje was named as one of 30 candidates to be named for the 2011 Lowe s Senior CLASS Award. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Sweeping Success The Spartans have found success in 3-0 matches this season, posting an 12-4 record. Of MSU s 21 wins thus far this year, 13 of which of been 3-0 sweeps for the Green and White. MSU started off the season by winning the first six matches of the season in straight sets, the first time since 1975 the Spartans have topped their first six opponents without dropping a set. George has quickly helped Michigan State return among the elite programs in the Big Ten Conference in just her seventh season. George ranks 36th among active coaches for total wins in NCAA Division I volleyball with 485 victories. In addition, George ranks among the top 80 coaches all-time with a career.597 winning percentage. Every year, George has had her teams in the top-25 in annual attendance among all NCAA Division I teams, including a high of eighth in 2008 when the Spartans welcomed 36,419 total fans. George currently boasts a career record of , and is while at MSU. George has continued the tradition of excellence in the classroom at Michigan State as she has boasted 28 Academic All-Big Ten selections and four Big Ten Distinguished Scholars during her time. The 2010 season once again saw the Green and White face one of the toughest schedules in the nation, as it played two of the 2009 NCAA semi-final teams over the course of the season. MSU opened up the year with its seventh-straight MSU Showcase title before taking on the rigorous conference slate. The Spartans closed out the 2010 campaign by winning four of their last six matches, highlighted by an impressive 3-0 win over then-no. 19 Michigan at home in the Breslin Center on Senior Night before a record-setting crowd of 6,824. As a result of the 3-0 win, MSU regained the State Pride Flag for the first time since 2006, also the last time the Spartans topped U-M in straight sets. Red-shirt junior Jenilee Rathje became the 17th all-time in program history to amass 1,000-career kills as she tallied eight against Northwestern to wrap-up the year. Rathje earned unanimous first team All-Big Ten honors as well as being named an AVCA All-Mideast Region honorable mention selection. Also, junior Kyndra Abron was named to the COBRA Magazine Midwest All-Region Team while red-shirt freshman Alexis Mathews was an honorable mention selection. A 1985 graduate of Illinois State, George helped the Redbirds win three consecutive Missouri Valley Conference titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. A team captain and crafty outside attacker, she was a three-time All-MVC selection and earned all-region honors. George, who earned her master s degree in education from Central Michigan in 1987, and her husband Jerry reside in Okemos, Mich., with their two sons, T.J., 19, and Conner, 14.
