The Bruins won the first-ever meeting in 1990 with a 3-0 sweep over the Bulldogs in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Los Angeles. The Zags will face three other Pac-12 opponents this season: Utah (Aug. 31), California (Sept. 7) and Arizona State (Sept. 14). Gonzaga s last win over a Pac-12 opponent came in 2017 when the Bulldogs defeated Arizona State 3-2 at home on Sept. 1. SCOUTING THE BRUINS: - The No. 11 Bruins return four starters plus a libero from last season s squad that finished overall and advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinals. Overall, six letter winners return for the Bruins and seven new freshmen have joined the ranks. - UCLA was picked to finish fourth in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll and were tabbed No. 11 in the preseason AVCA Coaches Poll that was released on Aug Two Bruins were named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Conference Team: Junior middle blocker Madeline Gates and sophomore outside hitter Mac May. Gates picked up AVCA Second Team All-American, AVCA Pacific South All-Region First Team and All-Pac-12 First Team honors a season ago. May was named All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention after averaging 2.59 kills, 1.06 digs and 0.42 blocks per set her freshman season. - Significant losses: The Bruins lost starters Reily Buechler and Sarah Sponcil to graduation in Buechler led the Bruins in kills with 3.53 per set and ranked third in digs with 2.65 per set, while Sponcil finished with 1,325 assists on the season for an per set average, good for 23rd nationally. HAWAIIAN AIRLINES RAINBOW WAHINE CLASSIC CANCELED: With the potential of Hurricane Lane heading to Hawai i, Gonzaga rerouted its travel plans to Los Angeles, resulting in two matches against the No. 11-ranked Bruins Aug Originally, the Bulldogs were slated to face Hawai i in their season-opening match on Aug. 24, followed by UCLA Aug. 25 and closing with Kansas State Aug. 26. 2 GONZAGA UNIVERSITY / BULLDOGS / A LOOK BACK AT SEASON-OPENERS: - Gonzaga has won 14 of its 32 season-opening matches. - The Bulldogs are an even 5-5 in season-openers in the last 10 seasons. - Nine of the Zags last 10 season-openers have been on the road or at a neutral site, and they ve tallied a 5-4 record in those matches. BULLDOGS PICKED FIFTH IN WCC Gonzaga was picked to finish fifth in the annual WCC Preseason Poll that is voted on by the league s head coaches. It marks the highest preseason pick since the Zags were tabbed to finish fourth in SCHEDULE BREAKDOWN: Gonzaga faces one of its most difficult schedules in recent seasons. 10 of the Bulldogs 2018 opponents posted winning records in 2017 with seven teams winning 20 matches or more. Five teams on GU s 2018 slate advanced to the 2017 NCAA Volleyball Tournament: UCLA, Iowa State, Utah, BYU and San Diego. The first four weeks of Gonzaga s season will be spent on the road at UCLA in Los Angeles, the Montana Tournament in Missoula, Mont., the Les Schwab West Coast Challenge in Portland, Ore., and the Sparky Classic in Tempe, Ariz. BUILDING THE FOUNDATION: The Bulldogs return the core of their squad as 12 letter winners will be back for the 2018 campaign. That s the most since the 2015 season which also featured 12 returning letter winners. The Zags also add seasoned veterans Perry Ramsey and Peighton De Von to the roster. Ramsey arrives in Spokane as a graduate transfer after four years at North Carolina State, while De Von, a Spokane native, returns to the Pacific Northwest as a graduate transfer after four years at Nevada. This year s squad features eight upperclassmen, the most since the 2015 season which carried 11 juniors and seniors, and all but three roster players have at least one year of Division I volleyball experience. 3 HEAD COACH - DIANE NELSON GONZAGA UNIVERSITY / BULLDOGS / Diane Nelson is entering her eighth year on the Gonzaga volleyball coaching staff and the third as head coach. In her second season, Nelson led a youthful group to a overall record with a 9-9 mark in West Coast Conference play, good for a tie for fourth place. The Zags carried 12 underclassmen on the 2017 roster with just one senior, fifthyear graduate transfer Alyse Whitaker. Despite their youth, the Zags produced multiple top-10 season performances as a team, cracking the top 10 in nine categories: kills, assists, digs, service aces, attack percentage, attack attempts, digs per set, points and sets played. During her first year at the helm of the program, Nelson guided the Zags to one of the best seasons in the last 27 years. The Zags went overall and 10-8 in WCC play, both marks better than any since at least The Zags finished in a tie for third in the WCC, their highest finish in that span as well. Among the notable results were a win against Pepperdine on the road -- the program s first-ever win in Malibu -- and a 3-0 record NELSON YEAR-BY-YEAR and tournament title at the 2016 Utah Volleyball Classic. OVERALL CONFERENCE YEAR W L W L TOTAL The 2016 season continued an upward trend for the Zags, being the third consecutive winning season. In 2014, Gonzaga went 17-12, eclipsing the.500 mark for the first time since They went a year later for the first consecutive pair of winning seasons since Gonzaga has developed in every aspect of the game since Nelson joined the staff. In 2014, the Bulldogs finished among the nation s top 20 in kills, kills per set, assists, and assists per set, while 2015 saw more digs per set and better passing than any time in the previous six years. Nelson has helped two Zags earn First Team All-WCC honors during her time in Spokane: Emmy Allen in 2016 and Savannah Blinn from Blinn also picked up All-America Honorable Mention honors twice and various Regional awards three times. A former Bulldog herself, Nelson (nee Pascua) is the first alum to take the reins of the volleyball program. She played from and is one of 14 Zags who ve posted 1,000 career kills, ending with 1,094. She s eighth on the all-time service aces list with 95, and she earned a spot on the conference All-Academic squad as a senior in In addition to her college experience, Nelson played professionally on the AVP and FIVB Tours, winning two tournaments and earning a top 32 ranking. While starting out as a professional, she also coached at Santa Fe Christian High School in Solana Beach, Calif., for five years. She led the school to four state title matches, winning in 2003 and ASSISTANT COACH - DREW PASCUA Drew Pascua is entering his third season as assistant coach at Gonzaga. He primarily works with the middle hitters and blockers. In his second season with the Zags, Pascua helped to lead a youthful squad featuring 12 underclassmen to a overall record, including a 9-9 mark in West Coast Conference play. Despite their youth, the Bulldogs cracked the single-season top 10 in nine different categories: kills, assists, digs, service aces, attack percentage, attack attempts, digs per set, points and sets played. Pascua was also instrumental in the development of middle blocker Payton Mack, who was the first Zag named All-WCC Honorable Mention since Pascua came to Gonzaga after two years at North Idaho College in Coeur d Alene, Idaho. He helped lead the Cardinals to a 10th-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament and a record in Pascua worked primarily with the middle blockers and the setters at NIC, inputting both blocking and offensive schemes while also organizing travel arrangements, overseeing academics, and leading the squad s strength and conditioning efforts. Before joining NIC, Pascua coached the men s volleyball team at Warner University in Lake Wales, Fla., during the 2007 season. He led that program to a 10th-place national finish at the NAIA level. ASSISTANT COACH - STEVI ROBINSON Stevi Robinson is entering her first season as assistant coach at Gonzaga. Robinson arrives at Gonzaga after two seasons as assistant coach at The Citadel. Robinson twice helped The Citadel to its second-highest win total in the last 10 seasons and its fourth-highest win total since the program s inception in 1998 as the Bulldogs posted eight wins during both the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Prior to her stint in Charleston, she played both indoor and sand volleyball at Pepperdine University. A two-time WCC Libero of the Year, Robinson finished as the Waves all-time digs leader with 1,750. She earned four-straight All-WCC honorable mention honors in addition to All-Tournament at the NCAA s 2011 Honolulu Regional. In sand volleyball, Robinson helped Pepperdine capture the AVCA Sand Team National Championship after posting a 2-0 record in her matches. After graduating in 2012 with her bachelor s degree, Robinson pursued her master s at USC and completed her athletic eligibility with the Trojans sand volleyball team. During her time at USC, Robinson was the AVCA Pairs Sand National Champion and an AVCA All-American. Her success in college paved the way for a professional opportunity. In addition to her USA National Indoor experience, Robinson spent time on the USA Beach U26 Elite 8 Training Team in 2013 before heading overseas to compete in the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. That s the program s second-highest finish since 1994 bested only by their tie for third place in Notched the program s first-ever win over Arizona State, 3-2, on Sept. 1, Marit Thorkildsen broke the three-set record for digs, finishing with 24 in a three-set sweep of Grand Canyon on Sept. 9. Jenna Kuehn helped the Zags rally to a five-set win over Saint Mary s on Sept. 21, finishing with 23 assists, 15 kills and 10 digs for the Bulldog s first triple double of the rally-scoring era (since 2001). She ended the season with three total triple-doubles. Gonzaga put together seven-straight wins from Sept Oct. 7, the longest streak in the last 10 years. Tiyana Hallums posted a career-high 31 digs in a fiveset victory over Portland on Oct. 21. She s the first Zag in the past five years to finish with 30 or more digs in a match. Payton Mack and Sarah Penner were both All-WCC honorees; Mack earned honorable mention accolades while Penner was named to the All-Freshman team. LAST TIME OUT Gonzaga 3, Portland 2 Game 30 * Nov. 20 * Martin Centre SPOKANE, Wash.--The Gonzaga University volleyball team finished the 2017 season with a happy memory as the Bulldogs downed Portland in five sets (25-17, 21-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-12) Monday at the Martin Centre in Spokane. As was custom in 2017, the Bulldogs (14-16 overall, 9-9 West Coast Conference) played to five sets Monday afternoon. Portland jumped out to an early 0-3 lead in that deciding fifth set, but the Zags used a three-point run of their own to tie the set at five. The Pilots later re-took a two-point advantage after a 1-4 run, but back-to-back kills from Sarah Penner and Chapin Gray tied the frame at 12 apiece. Jenna Kuehn landed an attack to give the Zags the lead, and Gonzaga claimed the final five points of the frame to finish off their eighth five-set victory of the season. In all, the Zags played to five sets 12 times this season, just one shy of the program s Division I record of 13. That was first set in 1990 and equaled in For the second consecutive match, Penner led the way offensively for the Zags, landing another season-high 26 kills on a.328 attack percentage. Gray tallied 14 kills, and Kuehn added 10 with all but one of them coming in the final three sets. Assisting on the vast majority of those kills was Faith Smith, who set all six rotations for the first time this season. She ended the match with 57 assists, a personal best for the junior and the most by any Bulldog in over three years. Defensively, the Zags combined for 85 digs, a season high. Libero Tiyana Hallums set the tone with 21 digs, while Penner added 19 in another career high for the freshman. Both Kuehn and Smith added 15 digs each to join Penner in double-double territory.
