5 What s New in 2015 MS House split into 7 th and 8 th grade leagues Partnered with Falls Church City (FCC) One 6 th grade and one 8 th grade team practicing in FCC gyms and playing Saturdays against MYV teams First match of the season is now considered "preseason" and will not count towards league standings The 4th-5th grade league court is shorted by 5 feet from 30' long x 30' wide to 25' long x 30' wide For the 4th-5th grade and 6th grade leagues, a single alternative service line for underpowered servers will be set at 20 feet from the net (usually 25'). No one will be allowed to serve in front of the alternative service line. New quality Spalding net systems (slide-style) at Spring Hill ES and Churchill Road ES Mentoring program for new coaches McLean Youth Volleyball

8 Player Skills Clinics First 1.5 weeks of the season are dedicated to player skills clinics Promotes learning or reinforcing of key volleyball skills such as serving, passing, setting and hitting. Gives everyone a solid foundation Local volleyball clubs are helping out with Mojo Elite VBC running 16 of 26 clinics!! SignUpGenius used to reserve spots Coaches should plan to attend as many clinics as possible (especially with child) Need lots of helping hands Great way to pickup coaching techniques McLean Youth Volleyball

9 Coaching Clinics Three clinics targeted at MYV coaches Clinic #1: Introduction to Volleyball Coaching on Wednesday March at Redeemer Lutheran Church For those new to coaching youth volleyball or anyone who needs a refresher Covers league mechanics, basic skills instruction, team bonding, coaching best practices, and general coaching tips and tricks. Taught by Chuck Pruitt and Jonathan Salkoff. Clinic #2: Experienced Volleyball Coaching on Thursday, March to 9pm at Cooper MS Gym #2 (Main). For more experienced coaches Covering topics such as teaching advanced volleyball skills, team dynamics, playing strategies, running efficient practices, and general coaching tips and tricks. Taught by Bill Musgrove, McLean HS Varsity Coach Coaching Clinic #3: Advanced Volleyball Coaching Concepts on Thursday, March at Madeira s Hurd Gym Taught by Tom Lowrey, President of the VA Elite Volleyball Club and covering tips and tricks learned from coaching VA Elite s high performance players and teams. Coaches are encouraged to attend at least one There will be considerable overlap McLean Youth Volleyball

10 Uniforms For players: Sundog tie-dye uniforms Each team receives 12 shirts No numbers on the back Unusual team names are actually shirt color patterns: Rainbow, Phoenix, Surf, Dawn, Macaw, RWB (Red Wild & Blue) For coaches: nice sport polo shirts Wear to matches Phoenix Red-Wild-Blue Macaw McLean Youth Volleyball

11 Equipment Team Equipment Each team gets 12 balls, 1 ball bag and 1 cart ES = Volley Lite Balls (red & white) MS/HS = Standard Balls (green & grey) Bring to practices and matches Contact Chuck if balls stuck in rafters Net Systems Net Heights: ES=7, MS/HS=7 4 Setup instructions on For Coaches page Will reshoot all setup videos this year Treat volleyball equipment with extra care some systems owned by school Poles and nets in storage rooms near gyms Contact janitors to open locked closets Stack returned equipment neatly McLean Youth Volleyball

12 League Rules for 2015 Standard FIVB / USA Volleyball rules Several exceptions for House matches to encourage learning Relatively lenient calls For all you ol schoolers, standard rules now include: Rally scoring - each serve results in a point Serves can touch net Players can touch side of net but not tape Double-touches on first contact McLean Youth Volleyball

13 Service Rules Select and Travel Standard USA Volleyball rules followed Special House Rules Service Redo if first serve missed Only on first attempt in the rotation No foot faults Maximum of three consecutive service wins per server After 3 points with one server, the service switches to other team without a point ES players serve from 25 or alternative service line of 20 (but not in front anymore) McLean Youth Volleyball

14 Scoring Rules Matches are 3 games to 25 points Play 3 full games (NOT best of 3) Start score at 4 to 4, end at 25 (win by 2) Matches must end on time winner of 3 rd game is team with most points on the hour MS Select matches are 5 full games For House, an extra point is awarded for 3 touches that result in an immediate win: Discretion of the referee For 6 th & 7 th -8 th leagues: first 2 touches can be bumps or sets; last touch must be an overhead hit For 4 th -5 th league: any 3 touches Extra point only awarded if opposing team does not legally return the ball into play 14

15 Substitution Rules - House Use Continuous Substitution - promotes equal playing time Players on count and bench are one continuous line-up With each clockwise rotation, two players rotate off the court and two players from bench rotate on Start each subsequent game with players in the same positions as the end of the previous game Net McLean Youth Volleyball 2015 Server 15

16 Substitution Rules Select/Travel Positional substitution Coach has full discretion on who is substituted During the game, a starting player and her substitute must occupy the same rotation position A player can only return to a game for the same person who replaced her originally Coach must track positions and substitutions NO minimum playing time commitment Team coaches determine playing time taking into consideration individual, team and game dynamics Some team roles require more playing time than others (ex. setter) Select and Travel players must agree to MYV Playing Time Policy before joining the program. 17 Match Sequencing 1. Warm-ups for 10 minutes Coaches coordinate hitting and serving times 2. Referee calls for team captains Flip coin to determine first server and side 3. Teams shake hands under the net before match begins 4. Two (2) minutes between games 5. Timeouts permitted Two 30-second timeouts per team per game 6. Team shake hands under the net after match ends 7. Referees report wins-losses REMINDER: Match must finish on the hour McLean Youth Volleyball

18 Head Coach Responsibilities 1. Encourage and inspire 2. Communicate and work with your parents Utilize parent volunteers as necessary 3. Address any special player/parent needs Bring in Chuck if needed 4. Create practice plans 5. Instruct players during practices and matches 6. Setup and takedown nets 7. Defer to referees in matches 8. Focus on fundamental ball control skills: serve, pass, set, hit and *movement* Practices should reinforce these skills Use drills that encourage as many touches as possible Simulate game play over the net Winning is always nice, but ping pong volleyball is not a way to master playing skills 9. Promote high-5s on all good or near-good plays it works!! 10. Encourage and inspire McLean Youth Volleyball

19 3-In-A-Row Froyo Challenge Fun competition in each league on the last day of regular season Saturday May 16 The team that records the most 3-touch extra points during the match wins a gift certificate for frozen yogurt at Lava Yogurt in Falls Church. First place: $85 Second place: $75 Third place: $65 A delicious incentive that really motivates In the past, the winning team is not always the top team in league standings McLean Youth Volleyball

23 Volunteer Building Director All MYV Head & Assistant Coaches must certify as a Volunteer Building Director (VBD) Required by Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) for MYA to use FCPS gyms Review materials on the NCS VBD website and take the short on-line test minutes to certify Retake test as often as needed Forward confirmation to mcleavb@gmail.com Related Safety Considerations NCS Inspectors DO visit gyms No water bottles allowed on playing floor injury hazard Remove any other potential hazards from the playing area Encourage players to wear knee pads and court shoes (discourage running shoes) Do not leave the gym/school area until all your players have been picked up McLean Youth Volleyball

24 Concussions Awareness Concussions have become an increasingly common ailment in youth sports and volleyball is no different. The Commonwealth of Virginia recently passed legislation requiring youth leagues that use public school to make coaches, parents and players aware of how to identify and manage concussions. To get ahead of this requirement, all MYV head coaches and assistant coaches must show proof of a concussion education certification. Two options: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s (CDC) Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports program The FCPS Concussion Certification, required of all HS student athletes and their parents Separate will go out with certification details McLean Youth Volleyball

Attend coaching clinics Support as many skills clinics as possible Seek VBD and concussion certifications Review rosters and schedules when posted on website around March 15 Communicate with your players/parents You can access team rosters and parents through your MYV website ID and password Prepare for your first practice the week of March 23 Encourage and inspire McLean Youth Volleyball
