1 /Page 1 of 5 M Pupil Transportation Services The major purpose of school transportation is to get pupils who live at unreasonable walking distance from school to school and back in an efficient, safe and economical manner. Other purposes include the provision of transportation for academic field trips in direct support of the curriculum, transportation for support of the co-curricular program (athletics, music, drama, and the like), and late bus transportation for those pupils who stay for school-related activities past the normal dismissal time. These shall be the criteria for management of school transportation: 1. Adequacy: Does the program provide both necessary and sufficient transportation to and from school and for all other school programs? 2. Safety: Does the scheduling and operating of the program take into consideration hazards, potential dangers to pupils, and all appropriate safeguards? 3. Economy: Is the program operated in the most efficient manner possible after considering the constraints imposed by the criteria of adequacy and safety? The Assistant Superintendent for Business, working in conjunction with the Principal, shall be responsible for scheduling all bus transportation, including the determination of routes, bus stops, rules and regulations, and all other matters relative to the transportation program. 1. Evaluation: The school transportation program shall be monitored by the Principals and the Assistant Superintendent for Business daily and subjected to periodic evaluations by them as necessary.

2 8600/Page 2 of 5 Regular Transportation Routes and Services The safety of pupils is a basic element of this policy. The following pupils shall be bused to school: 1. All pupils living remote from school as defined by New Jersey State statutes. (Living more than two miles from their public school.) 2. All Kindergarten pupils unless otherwise requested by the parent(s) or legal guardian(s). Kindergarten transportation will be provided to and from day care centers located in Voorhees Township under the following conditions: a. Pick-up and/or drop-off is along the regular bus route of the assigned AM or PM session and is the same every day. Individual transportation schedules cannot be honored (including the CER Program). b. The bus must be able to enter and exit the facility without obstruction. c. Completion of the Kindergarten Transportation Release Form. 3. Non-Remote Transportation (pupils residing two miles or less from their public school) will be provided for pupils in grade levels one through eight residing on a qualifying roadway. A qualifying roadway is one on which a pupil resides and requires the pupil to arrive at school under one of the following conditions: a. Crossing an external roadway without a crossing guard. b. Walking along an external roadway that does not have a sidewalk. c. The entire roadway of residence is more than one mile from the pupil s public school. d. Definition: External roadway is defined as a County road, State highway, or a roadway used by the general population to move from one section of the township or county to another and creates a

3 8600/Page 3 of 5 hazardous walking condition. The following is a list of external roadways: Route 73 Route 561 Cooper Road Victor Blvd. Kresson Road White Horse Road Evesham Road Somerdale Road Gibbsboro/Marlton Road Gibbsboro Road Kresson/Gibbsboro Road Burnt Mill Road Lafayette Avenue Echelon Road Lakeside Avenue 4. Definition: Internal roadway is defined as one used primarily by the residents of a development or area and not the general population. a. Pupils living on the following internal roadways will walk to the Kresson School because the entire roadway is not over the mile measurement: Barbet Drive Bittern Court Brambling Lane Brendenwood Drive Briarcreek Drive Brookstone Drive Cumberland Drive Flamingo Court Gettysburg Drive Heron Court Irongate Drive Jacamar Drive Merganser Drive Partridge Drive Redwood Court Sandpiper Drive Sequoia Court Shenandoah Drive Turaco Drive Warbler Drive Willowbrook Way Wynnewood Drive b. Pupils living on the following internal roadways will walk to the Signal Hill School because the entire roadway is not over the mile measurement: Addington Court Henley Lane Sutley Drive Tenby Chase Drive Battery Hill Drive Lexton Run Tarnsfield Court

4 8600/Page 4 of 5 Every attempt will be made to keep the maximum walking distances to the nearest bus stop to.6 mile. The mileage from home to school is the distance from the front door of the home to the school entrance that is closest to the home. Bus stops may be located at more frequent intervals to reduce pupil congestion at the stops or for other reasons of safety as determined by the Superintendent. For safety reasons the school bus is not permitted to enter cul-de-sacs or dead end streets except for Wilderness Drive and to honor a request by the Chief of Police or bus company due to the creation of a traffic hazard. District busses are not permitted to enter private roadways (i.e., condominiums or apartment complexes.) The school Board or its designated representative shall give due consideration to requests for extension of transportation service subject to the above. Such requests will only be considered for reasons of safety or new residency and to honor requests by the Chief of Police due to hazardous conditions. School transportation services are provided exclusively for the benefit of the pupil population and are to be used only in support of programs authorized by and under the auspices of the school Board. This policy applies to all schools, public and nonpublic, for which transportation services are provided by the district. Children may ride buses other than their own only at the convenience of the school district in accordance with bus safety regulations. A written request must be submitted by the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) to the Principal of the school for his/her official approval each time a child requests to take a bus other than his/her regular one. Such requests must be extreme emergencies and when granted, shall not necessitate a change of an established bus route. N.J.S.A. 18A:39-1 et seq. N.J.S.A. 27:15-16 N.J.S.A. 39:3B-1 et seq.
