2 Nivel: PRE-INTERMEDIO Paper: READING (1 h) A. Look at the following pictures of books and read the extracts from the texts below. A.1. Match the books with the extracts, write the book titles in the space provided After the policeman left I tried to stop shaking. I needed to keep calm; I needed a glass of cognac and an alibi. There would be an investigation, surely. I went upstairs to change clothes. To visit the morgue I would need to look different and it had to be right then Its quite simple, said Mulvey, the cat. We all have to be touching when I say the magic words: ABRACADABRA...You Bubbles climb up on to my back and then Captain Cockle, the parrot, climbs on top of you, ok? It was so cold when they came out of the rocket into the night in Mars that Captain Wilder began to collect wood to build a fire. They were there at last, after a long journey from planet Earth waiting for someone to rescue them. How long could that take? The port is a strange place, but it s where I want to be. I love the sight of the open sea and the clouds...like big handwriting in the sky. I love the moon shining on the water at night. I belong to the sea, like my grandfather John, the army officer with soft eyes

3 B. Read the following text about famous dogs. B.1. Match the sentences below to mean the same as in the text. Do as in the example below. Use arrows to match the sentences / Dog Celebrities Some of the most popular films ever made have starred dog s. Lassie - a border collie- is one of the most recognizable canine stars of the last century. T he Lassie character has appeared on radio, television, film, toys, comic books, animated series, juvenile novels, and other media. The first dog to play Lassie was called Pal and his offspring continue to play Lassie today. But Lassie is not alone; she s got plenty of company. Here are some other dogs that have warmed our hearts and tickled our funny-bones. Jack London s 1903 novel The Call of the Wild follows the adventures of a dog named Buck who returns to a more savage nature after serving as a sled dog during the Gold Rush. Through the novel, Buck symbolizes both the strong pull of nature and the equally powerful connection of loyalty. Cerberus - from Greek mythology- guarded the gates of Hades and was related to other early animal stars like the Hydra, the Nemean Lion, and the Sphinx. While he s usually portrayed as having three heads, some authors portrayed him with as many as fifty. Another well-known dog is Krypto the Superdog, a pet dog appearing in the various Superman comic books, it was described as having the abilities of Superman and remains an amusing side note in Superman history, one that was given his own animated series in Krypto was drawn as a white dog of generic pedigree. 4 C. Read the following text about Argentine football player Lionel Messi. C.1. Answer the questions below. Circle the best option. Lionel Messi praises European players, talks about the future...and more! Lionel Messi has said once more that he wants to end his career at Barcelona, insisting he hopes to be at Camp Nou forever. The Barcelona talisman told the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that Van Persie and Bayern Munich's Robben were two of the players he most admires, along with Arsenal s Mesut Ozil. Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben are two great players, Messi said. Ozil is for me Germany s best one, he is first class, very creative. Van Persie is a total footballer, a very complete forward and capable of scoring lots of goals. Robben also has class, but is more predictable. He can play the ball at speed and leave many players behind. The Argentina captain also repeated recent claims that he was happy the Portugal player and Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo would be at next summer s World Cup finals in Brazil. Of course I am happy that Cristiano is going to the World Cup, Messi said. The best teams must be there, because if you want to be the best you must defeat every country. I believe it is good for the World Cup and for Cristiano to go, he is a great player. Now everyone is talking about how well he is playing, but he has played like that for many years, for his club and country. The four-time FIFA Ballon d Or winner was defeated by Cristiano Ronaldo this season, having netted 16 goals in 21 games while the Portuguese player has scored 34 in 25. Messi, currently out of the team for the rest of 2013 while he recovers from a series of injuries, said he hoped to be back full fit for Barcelona s first game after La Liga s winter break. This season things are not going so well for me, but after Christmas, when the worst period of the season comes, I hope to be ready, he said. After the holidays competitions are decided and a small detail can leave you out of one of them. We are preparing well for what is coming and to achieve important things at the end of the season. (Adapted from Dermot Corrigan s article, November 25, 2013 ESPN) 1.
