Universidad Nacional de La Pampa Facultad de Ciencias Humanas Examen de Acreditación de Niveles de Lengua Inglesa Año 2011 NIVEL INICIAL

Candidate s Name DNI... Nivel: INICIAL Paper: READING (45 min) A. Read the following text. Tennis Tennis is one of the oldest games. The kings of France played tennis in the middle ages, and King Henry VII of England was playing the game in the 15 th century. In tennis, we say love for zero. This probably comes from the French word for egg, l oeuf, because a zero looks like an egg. Two (singles) or four players (doubles) can play tennis. Each player has a racket, and stands on opposite sides of a net. They take turns hitting the ball across the net (serving). They do this before the ball bounces twice. They hit the ball so that it bounces inside the court. A player is not allowed to hit a ball twice before it crosses the net. The game continues until one player cannot return the ball properly, and loses a point. A series of games is called a set. A series of sets is called a match. When one player has won, the umpire calls Game, set and match. A.1. Match the definitions on the left with the words on the right. Do as in the example. a) a series of games NET b) the place where you play tennis BOUNCES c) the thing that you hit the ball with b) COURT d) the thing that goes across the centre of the court SET e) a series of sets LOVE f) zero RACKET g) referee UMPIRE h) a ball hits the ground and comes up again MATCH A.2. Answer the following questions. Write complete sentences. a) Where did they play tennis first?... b) When does a player lose a point?...

B. Read these sentences. When he left school, he went to Harvard University to study Law. However, he spent most of his time in the computer centre. Then, he and Allen started Microsoft. _1_ Bill Gates became interested in computers at school although in those days they weren t very common. Gates was top of his class at Harvard, but he left without finishing his degree. Today Gates is a billionaire and he gives millions of dollars to charity. After leaving university in 1975, he and his friend Paul Allen successfully wrote a software programme for the first microcomputer, an Altair, although they didn t even have one. In the 1990 s, the US government wanted to break up Microsoft because they said the computer company was a monopoly but Gates was able to stop them. B.1. Write a number next to each of the sentences above to make a coherent text. Do as in the example. B.2. Find in the text the names of the following: a) A friend of Gates b) The computer company they started c) The first microcomputer d) A famous educational institution in the USA e) An institution against Microsoft

C. Read the following text. Back home Every day after school it s always the same well, more or less the same. Off the bus, up the hill, round the corner, through the gate, panic! Where s my front door key? A desperate search. Then I find it. I unlock the door. Fantastic I have the whole house to myself! I go up to my room and get out my drums. For half an hour I can practise and there s nobody around to complain about the noise. I often imagine myself as the drummer in a rock band. Martin, my older brother, says I haven t got a chance. He s like that, my brother always cheerful and optimistic! Then he comes home Martin, I mean. He s eighteen (I m sixteen). He s in his last year at school. He s taking exams at the moment, so we re all treating him with care. The sooner he leaves school, the better, I reckon. He usually comes into my room and starts using my computer. He doesn t even ask me first! It s only a basic model. It hasn t got much memory. But he hasn t got a computer at all. He spends all his money on taking girls out. Then, dad comes home, tired as usual, and sits down in front of the news on television. My mother, who also goes out to work and is just as tired, rushes around and gets dinner ready for the whole family. Martin never helps I m revising! he shouts down. I sometimes lay the table, at least. And then we all sit down and eat. And that s how it is, every day. DANIEL STEVENS, 5B C.1. Say whether the followings statements are (T) TRUE or (F) FALSE. Do as in the example a) F Daniel is happy because his family is at home. b) Daniel plays the drums in a rock band. c) Martin is older than Daniel. d) Martin is interested in going out with girls. e) Both mum and dad go out to work. f) Daniel helps mum with the cooking. g) Daniel is speaking about his daily morning routine.

CANNOT MANY THE SERVE FEED HEALTHY LUNCH IS HAD EAT MUCH SOMETHING We are now about to enter the twenty-first century but young people still have the same eating habits that they twenty years ago. They still eat too fat and sugar because they eat too many crisps, snacks and sweets. I know that some schools try to give students healthy meals at time but there are still plenty of schools which mostly hamburgers and chips! Children certainly do not have enough food in their diet. I understand why this is so, when I only see plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in shops. There, of course, another issue the food that we throw away. Every day school kitchens in Britain throw enough food to an Ethiopian village for a year! Isn t it time we did something about this? C. Choose the correct alternative. CIRCLE it as in the example.
