6 SEASON OUTLOOK 2005 OUTLOOK Following the best season in Indiana field hockey history, the 2005 field hockey team has set its sights on an NCAA tournament birth. Under the tutelage of veteran head coach Amy Robertson, the Hoosiers are more experienced, talented and enthusiastic than ever before. Consequently, Robertson returns 17 letterwinners and 10 starters for the 2005 campaign. FORWARDS There is no doubt this year s squad will be a constant scoring threat. Returning letterwinners Lydia Schrott and Frederique Meeuwsen, who both broke individual career records in 2004 by scoring 23 points each, will lead the team s offensive attack. Schrott is coming off a record-breaking 2004 season. She is the second-leading scorer in IU history and garnered third team All-America honors in The Quarryville, Pa., native, who started all 20 games for the Hoosiers, scored 23 points and led the team in assists with 11. Additionally, Schrott is the Indiana career points (38) and assists (14) leader. Meeuwsen returns for her second season as a Hoosier after setting a school record with 10 goals in a single season. Meeuwsen, who played in 18 games and started 16, 23 points and scored game-winning goals three times during the 2004 campaign. Senior Mallory Reabold, who started all but two games for the Hoosiers, contributed nine points (three goals and three assists) last season. Senior Nikki Orciuch, who tallied 10 points for the season, and sophomores Kate O Connell and Erin Isler also add strength to the Hoosier scoring offense. We will have a lot of experience, skill and speed on our forward line, coach Amy Robertson said. We also have some true goal scorers who will put up some big numbers in Senior captain Lesley Wiler will lead the Hoosiers in MIDFIELD Leading the experienced group of Hoosier midfielders are senior captain Lesley Wiler, who tallied 14 points (4 goals and 6 assists) during the 2004 season, and Kayla Bashore. Bashore has tallied 29 points (11 career goals, 7 career assists) in her three-year career as a Hoosier. In 2003, she served as captain of the Hoosier squad, earned second team All-America and first team All-Big Ten recognition. Also adding depth to the Hoosier midfield is sophomore Meredith Brown. Brown ended the 2004 campaign starting in 19 games and scoring 12 points off three goals and six assists. Sophomores Rachel Telian, Amanda Oyler and Margie Stoll are expected to see significant action this season. Our midfield is extremely talented this year, robertson said. We have a lot of excellent distributers and play makers. BACKFIELD The Hoosier defense is once again expected to be strong in Indiana, who only gave up 34 goals last season, is returning a trio of veteran defenders. Seniors Morgan Albini, Ryan Woolsey and junior Morgan Miller helped the Hoosiers both offensively and defensively in Albini, who started all 20 games last season, took two shots on goal and helped the Hoosiers to three shutouts for the season. Miller was fourth on the team in points (13) and posted a defensive save. She started all 20 games for the Hoosiers and made two game-winning scores in Woolsey started 19 of 20 games and earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week (Aug. 30-Sept. 5). She took two shots and tallied one assist in We have a lot of depth in our backfield. Our five backs are very athletic, strong and talented, Robertson said. 6
7 2005 Morgan Miller posted 13 points and one defensive save in GOALKEEPER With the loss of veteran goalkeeper Katie Kanara, Robertson will look to sophomore Haley Exner and incoming freshman Jobi Manson to defend the Hoosier goal. Exner made appearances in two games (Appalachian State and Lindenwood) for a total of 70 minutes last season and recorded two saves. Haley is ready to step up in a starting role, Robertson said. She has great size, she s a great athlete, and she makes good decisions. SEASON OUTLOOK SCHEDULE Once again, the Hoosiers are set to face some of the toughest competition in the country. Top-rated teams such as Michigan State, Northeastern and Pacific highlight the 2005 schedule. On Sept. 9, the Cream and Crimson take on the defending national champion, Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. Additionally, four opponents slated for the 2005 season were NCAA tournament participants. The 2005 campaign opens with a scrimmage against in-state rival Ball State before a four-game road trip out east. The Hoosiers take on New Hampshire, then NCAA tournament qualifier Northeastern before squaring off against Appalachian State and Wake Forest. Indiana begins a five-game homestand beginning with another NCAA tournament qualifier, Pacific, followed by Ohio, Missouri State, top-rated Michigan State and Lindenwood. The Hoosiers then make their way to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on the 2004 Big Ten champion Wolverines, followed by Kent State. The Cream and Crimson return home to face Big Ten rival Northwestern and Louisville before traveling to Columbus, Ohio, to battle Ohio State and to Iowa City, Iowa to take on Iowa. On Oct. 28, the Hoosiers return home to close out the season against Penn State and Miami (Ohio) before heading off to the Big Ten Tournament in Iowa City Nov Our schedule this year provides us with an opportunity to compete against teams from every region of the country, Robertson said. We are playing some of the best teams in the country. It will be an exciting year for Indiana field hockey. NEWCOMERS The Hoosiers welcome three freshmen to the squad. Forward Katie Kiper (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart), goalkeeper Jobi Manson (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) and back Danitra Castro (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) are expected to compete add a great deal of depth to the team. We have three outstanding freshmen joining the squad this year. This incoming class is small but plentiful. Each of our newcomers will see playing time and have the capability of making significant contributions in their first season as a Hoosier, Robertson said. 7
8 LENGTH OF GAMES/OVERTIME PROCEDURES A collegiate field hockey game is divided into two halves each lasting 35 minutes in length. Halftime lasts seven minutes. At halftime, the teams switch playing sides. If a game is tied at the end of regulation, there will be two seven-minute periods of play. The game ends when one team scores a goal. If there is still a tie after overtime, there will be a penalty stroke competition. Each team selects five players to take alternating penalty strokes against the opposing goalkeeper. PLAYERS Each team has 11 players on the field, including the goalkeeper. Only seven players, including the goalkeeper, compete during overtime play. FIELD SIZE The field hockey field is 100 yards long and 60 yards wide, divided by a centerline and a 25-yard line on each side of the field. A striking circle is marked 16 yards from each end line. PASSING Drive: Players drive on passes, free hits, and shots on goal. A player takes a hard stroke at the ball using a good backswing motion with both hands together at the top of the hockey stick. The backswing should go no higher than your hip on the backswing or follow through. Flick: This pass is lifted in the air for quick passes or shots. The ball must not lift more than eighteen inches above the ground. To execute this pass, the player snaps their wrist Push pass: This is a quick wrist stroke with no back swing. The ball is pushed and directed along the ground. It is considered the most accurate pass in the game. Slap: This is the most powerful stroke in the game. It is a hard, quick pass or shot on goal, done with a half backswing with hands slightly apart. POSITIONS Forwards: These players make up the front line of the offensive attack. Midfielders or Links: These players are considered the most versatile players on the field. They play both offense and defense. They are positioned between the forwards and defenders. They are mainly responsible for moving the ball from the defenders to the forwards. Backs: They play in their team s defensive half in front of the goalkeeper. Defenders help keep the ball out of the striking circle by clearing it up to the midfielders. Sweepers: This is the last player before the goalkeeper. They have similar responsibilities as the backs. Goalkeeper: These players play directly in front of the goal to block shots by the opposing players. The goalie is the only player on the field allowed to touch the ball with any part of the body, but can do so only when she is inside her own striking circle. Goalies must always wear a helmet, chest protector, throat guard, leg guards, and gloves. FOULS Obstruction: Called against a player who cuts between an opponent and the ball or uses her stick, shoulder, or body as an obstruction to the ball. Third-party obstruction: Occurs when a player positions herself between the ball and an opponent allowing a teammate an unobstructed play on the ball. Back sticks: When a player uses the rounded side of the stick. Stick interference: Called against a player for intentionally or unintentionally using her stick to hit an opponent s stick. Undercutting: Chopping at the ball, to lift it in an unsafe manner. FREE HIT OR A PENALTY CORNER: All fouls result in a free hit or a penalty corner Free hit: A free play awarded on any foul awarded outside the scoring circle. It usually takes place at the location of the violation. All opposing players must stand at least five yards from where the hit is taken. If the free hit takes place within the 25- yard line, every player on the field must be five yards away. Penalty corner: Awarded when the defense commits a foul inside the striking circle or intentionally hits the ball out-ofbounds over the end line. They can also be awarded if an intentional or dangerous play takes place within the 25-yard line. A penalty corner is taken by an attack player along the end line at a spot ten yards away from the nearest goal post. All other attack players must stand with both their sticks and feet outside of the striking circle. Five defenders, including the goalie, stand behind the end line, as the rest of the defending team must go to the 50-yard line. Once contact is made with the ball, the defenders are able to move. On attack, typically the ball will be hit to a teammate positioned outside the striking circle. An offensive player will stop the ball with the stick while another player will strike the ball at the goal. Long corner hit: Occurs after the ball goes out-of-bounds off a defender s stick. The attacking team gets the ball five yards from the corner of the field up the sideline. 8
