1 Soccer Study Guide lgrotthuss football-focus.com.webloc sports/images/soccer.jpg The Game Soccer is played with 11 players per team High School varsity soccer with 2 equal halves of 40 minutes Overtime periods vary from 8 to 10 mintues. ISL (5 minutes) The person winning the coin toss decides choice of ends of the possession of the ball. During the kick-off each team must stay on their own side of the field until the ball has been kicked its circumference: The opposing team must be 10 yards away The ball must go forward (if not it is re-kicked by the same team) After each goal there will be another kick-off by the team scored against After half time the opposite team kicks-off. After the kick-off the player taking the kick-off may not play the ball until someone else has played it. It is considered a goal when the ball passes over the goal line between the goal posts, and under the crossbar. The soccer field is from 100 to 120 yards long and 60 to 75 yards wide. Goalie High School Rules Players may pass the ball back to the goalie however the goalie can only use his/her feet when this happens. He/she becomes a regular field player. The goalie (Keeper) has 6 seconds to release the ball out of the penalty area. Ball in Play At all other times from start of the match to the finish. If it rebounds from a goal post, crossbar or corner-flag into the field. It rebounds off either the referee or linesmen when they are in the field of play.
2 Ball out of play When it has crosses the goal line or sideline. When the referee has stopped the game. Offside A player is off-side if he she is nearer his opponent s goal-line than the ball at the moment the ball is played unless: 1. He/she is in his/her own half of the field 2. There are two of his/her opponents nearer to their own goal line the he/she is. 3. The ball last touched as opponent or was last played by him/her. 4. He receives the ball direct from a goal kick, a corner-kick, a throw-in, or when the referee dropped it. 5. For infringement of these rules an indirect free kick shall be awarded. A player in an offsides position shall not be penalized unless he/she is interfering with the play or with an opponent, or is seeking to gain an advantage by being in an offside position. Drop Ball A drop ball occurs when the ball is caused to go out-of-bounds by 2 opponents simultaneously. The ball becomes deflated Following an injury Temporary suspension of play for an unusual situation Rules for Drop Ball Taken where the ball becomes dead unless this is in the penalty area, in which case the spot is the nearest point outside the penalty area. If the ball goes out-of-bounds it is placed 5 yards inside the boundary line unless this is in the penalty area. The referee between the 2 opponents drops the ball. The ball must hit the ground before it can be played. Fouls and Misconduct (a direct free kick is awarded for the following) Kicking an opponent, tripping, charging, jumping at an opponent, striking, holding, pushing, or handles the ball (does not apply to the goal keeper). *Free Kick *Direct: A goal can be scored off the kick *Indirect: Cannot score off the kick without the ball touching another person
3 Rules for Free Kick All opposing players shall be at least 10 yards away from the ball. The ball must be stationary. The kicker can not touch the ball will be awarded to the other team. If the kicker infringes on the rules the ball will be awarded to the other team. If the defending team infringes on the rules the kick will be taken again unless a goal was made. Indirect Free Kick If the player taking a kick-off, goal kick, corner-kick, throw in, penalty-kick, or an indirect free kick the ball when the goalkeeper has possession. Offside Fairly charging when neither is within playing distance of the ball. Goalkeeper takes more than 4 steps while walking, bouncing or throwing the ball. Goalkeeper illegally handles the ball Delay on the goalkeeper clearing the ball Unsportsmanlike conduct A goal may be scored directly from: Direct free-kick Penalty kick Corner kick Drop ball Goalkeepers throw, punt or drop-kick A goal may not be scored direct from: Kicker of a kick-off Indirect free kick Goal kick Throw-in Free kick into a teams own goal Penalty kick Taken from the penalty mark All players except the goalkeeper must be 10 yards away The goal keeper must stand on the goal-line until the ball is kicked This is a direct kick If the ball touches the goal posts or goalie on the way in it is good For Infringement of this Rule: The defending team will retake the kick if the goal was not scored. By the attacking team other than by the player taking the kick if the goal is scored it shall be disallowed and the kick retaken.
4 By the player taking the penalty-kick, committed after the ball is in play, a player of the opposing team shall take an indirect free kick from the spot where the infringement occurred. Throw-In Taken when the ball has passed over the sideline or touch line. The opposite team committing the violation at the spot where the ball crossed over the line takes the throw. Rules for Throw-In The thrower must face the field of play, feet pointed toward the field. Arms overhead A part of each foot must remain in contact with the ground. A goal cannot be scored directly off a throw-in. The player taking the throw-in cannot touch the ball a second time until it has been touched by another player. For Infringement of this Rule: The opposite team gets the ball at the sideline. Goal Kick Taken when the ball passes over the end line and the offense last touched the ball. Rules For the Goal Kick The ball is placed on the corner of the goal box. The ball must be kicked forward. The kicker cannot play the ball a second time until another player has touched it. All players must be 10 yards away. The ball must be kicked beyond the penalty area or the kick is taken again. The ball must be kicked beyond the penalty area or the kick is taken again. 5 Obstruction The intentional act by a player, not in possession of the ball or not attempting to play the ball, of running between an opponent and the ball or using the body as an obstacle. Terminology Back (Fullback)- Defensive players who generally stay in there own half of the field and try to prevent goals. Bolt- A defensive player who plays near the edge of the penalty area and attacks any offensive player who comes near. Charge-To initiate contact. Collecting-Fielding or stopping the ball legally with the body, legs, or feet. Corner- The intersection of the end line (goal line) and the sideline (touchline); the position where a corner-kick is initiated. Corner Kick- A free kick taken near the corner of the field by an offensive player and awarded when a defensive player sends the ball over the goal line not between the goal posts. Cover- To protect an area; to take over for a teammate who is out-of-position. Defensive team- The team not in possession of the ball trying to prevent a goal. Direct free kick- A free kick in which the ball may be kicked directly at the goal. Dodge- Abrupt change of direction done to avoid an opponent. Double Marking- Two defensive players guarding one opponent. Dribble- Controlling the ball while running by using a series of short taps made with the feet. Drop Ball- A method of restarting play after a double foul or certain out-of-bounds plays which the referee drops the ball between two opponents. Drop Kick- A ball that is kicked as it rebounds from the ground after being dropped from the hand(s). Feint- Fake Forwards- The players who lead the attack and generally play from their own midfield area to the goal at which they are shooting. Foul- Any illegal interference with an opposing player, including kicking, pushing, shoving, tripping and dangerous or aggressive play. Free Kick -An unguarded place kick awarded to the opponent of one who fouls (Taken at the point where the foul was made). Fullback- (Back) Goal- A 1 point score awarded for kicking the ball into the goal. Goalkeeper-(Goalie)- The person who protects the goal who is given special privileges such as catching and throwing the ball. Goal Kick- A Free kick awarded to the defensive team when the offensive team sends the ball over the goal line not between the goal posts. Goal Line- The end line of the field. Golden Goal- A sudden-death method of resolving a tie, in which the first goal scored during extra time, wins the game.
6 Halfbacks- Players who back up the forwards on offense and also help the backs on defense, generally playing in the area between the tow penalty areas. Hand Ball- A violation in which a player touches the ball with his or her hands during play. Heading- Volleying the ball with the head. Heel Pass- A backward pass contacted with the heel of the foot. Indirect free kick- A free kick where a goal can be scored only after the ball has first been passed to or touched by a teammate. Insides (inners)- Forwards who pay an attach position between the center of the field and the wing positions. Kickoff- An unguarded place kick in the center of the field used to start each half and after each goal is scored (the team not scoring takes the kickoff). Match- A single 90 minute game divided into 45 minute halves. Mark- To guard an opponent. Midfielders- Players who play both offense and defense and move from penalty area to penalty area on the field (similar to halfbacks). Offensive team- The team in possession of the ball trying to score a goal. Offsides- A violation where an attacking player receiving a pass 1 on 1 defense (Man to Man)- Each defensive player mark (guard) one specific opponent. Pass- Propelling the ball with the feet or other legal body part. Penalty Area- An area in front of each goal within which the goalkeeper has special privileges. Penalty Kick- A free kick towards the goal awarded at the penalty kick line to the offensive team for certain fouls committed by the defenders within their won penalty area. Place Kick- A ball that is kicked before it hits the ground after being dropped from the hand(s). Penalty Shoot-Out- An extension of the tie-breaking system where, if neither team has won after two extra periods, the teams gets a series of five penalty kicks until one side is ahead. More than five penalty kicks are awarded if necessary. Penalty Spot- A marked area 11 meters in front of the goal where the ball is placed for a penalty kick. Punt- A ball that is kicked before it hits the ground after being dropped from the hand(s). Red Card- Issued to a player ejected from the game, either for committing two yellow card offences or for committing a single serious offence such as spitting, dangerous play, violence, and intentional handball or another foul that prevents a goal from being scored. Save-A deflection or catch of the ball by the goalkeeper that prevents a goal. Sideline- A boundary line on each side of the field. Also called the Touchline. Striker- A player who is primarily a scorer; a forward who concentrates on attacking the goal.
7 Sweeper- A defensive player who roams from side to side on the field and plays either in front of or behind the other defenders (except the goal keeper) and who attempts to intercept all long downfield passes by the opponents. Tackle- Taking the ball away from an opponent by use of the feet and without body contact. Throw-In- A two handed overhand throw used as a means of putting the ball in play after it goes out of bounds at the sidelines. Touch Line- The sideline of the field. Trap- fielding or stopping the ball with a part of the body other than the arms or hands. Volley- Striking an aerial with a body part other than the arm or hands. Wall- A defensive formation to block a free kick in which defensive players stand shoulder-to-shoulder between an opposing kicker and the goal. Wings- (Wingers)- The forwards or attacking players who play near the sidelines of the field. Yellow Card- Issued as a warning to a player for a serious foul or other offences such as persistent fouling, arguing with the referee, or poor behavior.
