1 Soccer Rules SOCCER GOALS: The first and last games of the night: each team is responsible for bringing out one goal prior to game and taking it back at the end of the evening. They are to be picked up in Matthaei at the west door which is facing the tennis courts. They are to be returned to that same door when games are finished. First games make sure to pick them up 15 minutes prior to game time!! ROSTER 1. You must have a valid WSU One Card. 2. All participants must create and IMLeagues account to participate in Wayne State intramurals. 3. Each team must have the minimum number of players signed-up on their IMLeagues roster to play the first game. Otherwise, your team will forfeit the first game. 4. College intramurals are for currently enrolled WSU students (that means they are taking classes during the term of the IM sport they are playing) and WSU faculty and staff who have a membership to the MHRFC. No exceptions. Community members of the MHRFC are not eligible to participate in WSU intramural sports. 5. Any new player must be added prior to game and create an IMLeagues account. We will not be allowing players to write in their names on the roster after week All players must have an IMLeagues account and be on the roster prior to playoffs. NO EXCEPTIONS. 7. Players must check in with scorekeeper 10 minutes before each game and have the WSU One Card on them. 8. A player can only participate on one single gender and one coed team per sport. 9. Teams allowing participation of players who are not eligible (read Rule #2) or not on the roster will forfeit any games in which the illegal player participates. UNIFORMS Players are required to have a dark/white shirt or jerseys supplied by the Mort Harris RFC NUMBER OF PLAYERS A team shall consist of seven (7) players including the goalkeeper (the goalkeeper must wear a shirt of contrasting color). For Coed, there must be 3 males and 3 females on the field at all times. The goalie can be of either gender. If a team does not have 3 males or 3 females, they must play short until they can field 3 of each gender. GENERAL RULES 1. A minimum of 5 players is required to start each game.

2 2. The goalie is the only player allowed to make contact with the ball using his/her hands and arms while inside of the 18 yard box. 3. Out of bound balls result in a throw-in by the other team. 4. Any play judged to be unnecessarily physical by the referee will result in a stoppage of play with the referee making the appropriate call. 5. Any dangerous play will result in an indirect kick for the other team and handballs within the goal box (or determined spot by referee) will result in an automatic penalty kick for the other team. 6. Two (2) yellow cards will result in an ejection of the game. 7. Any player receiving a straight red card will be suspended for the current game and the following game. 8. For all additional rules please refer to the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Laws of the Game. FORFEIT/MERCY RULE The clock begins at the designated start time. If a team is late, the missed time will not be added to the end of the game. The clock will continue to run until halftime. If a team is missing the minimum amount of players by the end of the halftime period, the game will be recorded as a forfeit. Forfeit score is 3-0. For each 10 minutes that goes by, one goal will be awarded to the team who is ready to play. The game will be called a mercy if a team is losing by 5 or more goals with 6 minutes left in a game or if a team is losing by 3 or more goals with 3 minutes left. Teams also may forfeit if they DO NOT return the goals. As stated in the rules, the first teams that play must put the goals on the field and the last teams that play must put the goals up at the West Matthaei doors, which is facing the tennis courts. Failure to do this will result in the forfeiture of that day s game. PLAYOFFS Playoff seeding will be determined by the following 1.) Win % 2.) Sportsmanship 3.) Head to Head 4.) Differential GAME LENGTH: The game consists of two 20-minute halves (running time). There will be a three (3) minute half-time interval. There is no overtime during the regular season. TIME OUTS: Each team is allowed a one (1) minute time out per half. A time out must be called on a dead ball by a player on the field.

3 OFFSIDES There is no offsides rule in intramural play. TIE GAMES During the playoffs, if the score is tied at the end of regulation the following procedures will occur in successive order until a winner is determined: a. One 5-minute Golden Goal period. b. 5 kicks from the penalty spot per team. c. A continuation of kicks from the spot in sudden-death format. SUBSTITUTIONS Substitutions may be made, with the consent of the referee: a. Prior to a throw-in, in your favor. b. Prior to a corner throw- in your favor c. Prior to a goal kick, by either team. d. After a goal, by either team. e. After an injury, when the referee stops play, by either team. f. At half-time. g. When the referee stops play to caution a player, the cautioned player MUST be substituted, prior to the restart of the game. h. The substitute only enters the field of play after the player being replaced has left AND after receiving a signal from the referee. i. The substitute only enters the field of play at the halfway line and during a stoppage in play. j. No substitution may be made on the fly. Any players who sub on the fly may be subjected to cautioning by the referee. k. Changing of goalkeepers may only be made during dead ball situations. THE GOALKEEPER The goalkeeper will be permitted use of the hands to play the ball within the marked penalty area. Once the goalkeeper has released the ball, he/she cannot pick up the ball until an opposing player touches it or until one of his/her teammates touches the ball outside of the penalty area. Only the goalkeeper will be allowed to slide. The goalkeeper may slide within the penalty area only. An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a goalkeeper, inside his own penalty area, commits any of the following four offences:

4 1. Controls the ball with his hands for more than ten (10) seconds before releasing it from his possession 2. Touches the ball again with his hands after he has released it from his possession and before it has touched another player 3. Touches the ball with his hands after it has been deliberately kicked to him by a team-mate 4. Touches the ball with his hands after he has received it directly from a throw-in taken by a team-mate SLIDING No sliding tackles are permitted. Sliding of any sort results in a direct free kick to be taken by the opposing team, taken from where the offense occurred. If a player slide tackles with the intentions of tripping, interfering, or harming an opposing player, that person will receive a red card and be ejected from the game. THROW-INS A throw-in is awarded to the opponents of the player who last touched the ball before the ball crossed the touch line. A throw-in will be taken from the point where the ball crossed the touch line. A throw-in is indirect. After taking a throw-in, the same player can not touch the ball again until it touches another player. An illegal throw-in will result in a throw-in from the same location for the opposing team. A corner kick is awarded to the opponents of the player who last touched the ball before the ball crossed his own goal line (not within the goal). The offensive team puts the ball in play by a throw-in from the corner of the field nearest the point where the ball went over the goal line. A corner kick is direct. An illegal corner kick results in a goal kick for the opposing team. DIRECT FREE KICKS Awarded to the opposing team, from where the offense occurred, when a player commits one of the following fouls: a. Kicks or attempts to kick an opponent b. Trips or attempts to trip an opponent c. Jumps at an opponent d. Charges an opponent in a careless or reckless manner, or with excessive force e. Strikes or attempts to strike an opponent f. Pushes an opponent. g. Makes contact with the opponent before touching the ball when tackling to gain possession of the ball. h. Holds an opponent. i. Spits at, or on an opponent. j. Handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area).

5 INDIRECT FREE KICKS Awarded when an opponent is guilty of any of the following: a. Trying to kick the ball held by the goalkeeper b. Impeding the goalkeeper from releasing the ball c. Charging d. Obstruction e. Goalkeeper carrying the ball more than four steps f. Dangerous play (includes slide tackles and high kicks ) g. Playing the ball a second time before it is played by another player after a kickoff or free kick h. Improper substitution i. Dissenting by word or action with a referee s decision ***Kicker must wait for the official s whistle ONLY IF FIVE YARDS IS REQUESTED. *** For both direct and indirect free kicks, the ball must be stationary when the kick is taken and the kicker must not touch the ball again until it has touched another player. Failure to meet these requirements will result in an indirect free kick awarded to the other team. GOAL KICKS Awarded when the ball crosses the goal line (not within the goal), having last been touched by an attacking player. The defensive team puts the ball in play with a kick taken within a 3-yard radius from either goal post. A goal may not be scored directly from a goal kick. PENALTY KICKS Awarded if any of the direct free kick offenses is committed by a player inside his own penalty area. Only the goalkeeper shall be permitted to defend against the penalty kick; all other players must remain beyond the halfway line until the ball is kicked. The kicker must wait for the official s whistle. CO-REC RULES All the above rules apply to co-rec competition with the following additions During co-rec play, there must be an even number of men and women on the field. A co-rec team cannot have more than 3 males or 3 females on the field at any time. Goals for women count as 2, goals for men count as 1. Maximum number of males/females is 3. For example, if a team has 4 guys and only 1 girl ready to start play, that team can only play with 3 guys and 1 girl. The extra guy can be used as a sub.
