2 GAMEDAY CENTRAL Scouting Montana Montana enters Friday's contest against CSU with a record on the year, having lost its two most recent matches at Texas and at Missouri. The Grizzlies are on the year already against Mountain West schools, knocking off Air Force in their season opener, 1-0, before losing at Wyoming, 1-0. On the year, Montana has nine goals as a team and has conceded 10 goals. Key Players The Grizzlies are led by a pair of dynamic attacking players in senior midfielder Chloe Torres and junior forward Mackenzie Akins. Torres and Akins are tied for the team lead with two goals a piece, while Torres also has two assists to her name to lead the team in that category and points. Both of Akins' goals have been gamewinners for Montana. Series vs. Montana Friday's meeting is the first meeting all-time between the two schools. Scouting Eastern Washington Eastern Washington enters this weekend's competition boasting a record on the year. Eastern Washington last took the field on Sept. 5 when it lost 4-1 at Seattle University. In four matches, the Eagles have scored nine goals and conceded six goals. Eastern Washington is against Mountain West teams this year, losing at Fresno State, 2-1, in the season opener. Key Players The Eagles are led by sophomore Paige Galloway, who leads the team with three goals and six points. Eastern Washington also gets key contributions from senior forward Cassie Black, who has tallied two goals and an assist. Series vs. Eastern Washington Sunday's meeting is the first meeting between the two programs. Where to Watch Both Friday's and Sunday's matches will be streamed in a pay-for service by Montana. Video and Stats: Follow Along on Twitter Match updates will also be provided on twitter Rams Seek Success On First Road Trip After five home matches and one road match at Colorado, the Colorado State Rams are traveling to Missoula, Mont. for their first road trip of the year. Colorado State is most recently coming off a thrilling overtime victory over College of Charleston and will be looking to continue that momentum against a couple of Big Sky opponents. The Colorado State Rams embark on the program's second season ever with a schedule featuring some of the premier programs in the sport. On the year, the Rams will play 10 matches at home, eight on the road and one at a neutral site. The Iron Woman Through six matches this season, only senior defender Jami Vaughn has played every possible minute in the field for the Rams. This a familiar sight for Colorado State, as the Kansas transfer was one of just three players in the entire Mountain West to play every possible minute in Dating back to last year when she first came to Colorado State, Vaughn has now plaed every possible minute in 24-consecutive matches, a streak that spans 2,169 minutes without a sub. Vaughn's streak leads the Mountain West. Eckert's Moment Without a goal in the 2014 campaign, sophomore midfielder Amy Eckert chose a timely moment for her first goal of the season, and second of her career. Three minutes into overtime against College of Charleston, Eckert snuck behind the defense and received a pass from junior forward Gianna Bertana. Just inside the edge of the box, Eckert one-timed the pass and slotted the ball into the corner of the net to give CSU it's second win of the year, matching the team's total from last year. Attacking From The Back It's no secret that Colorado State loves to use its wing backs as part of its attack. That trend is never more clear than when looking at the Rams' senior left back, Catherine Ruder. Through six matches, Ruder leads the team with 11 shots and four shots on goal, including a team-most three vs. SMU on Sept. 12. Fellow senior defender Jami Vaughn is third on the team with four shots. Depth is Key Head Coach Bill Hempen has not been afraid to go to his bench early in this 2014 season. As the team continues to improve upon its fitness and experiment with different lineups, Hempen has played 24 different girls already this season, with all 24 girls seeing action in at least two matches. Jumping On The Opponent Early Colorado State knows the importance of getting off to a quick start in a match. An early goal can completely tilt the entire momentum of the match. All three of the Rams' wins have come when they have scored the first goal. All-time, CSU is when scoring first, and all-time when conceding the first goal of the match. Second Half Action In Colorado State's six matches this season, the games have started to open up in the second half. Across the board, CSU's stats have gone up across the board in the second half of matches. While the Rams have tallied 11 total shots in the first half of matches this season, that total jumps to 33 in the second half of matches. Similarly, CSU's corners jump from seven in the first half to 21 in the second half this year. Both of CSU's goals this season have also been scored after the intermission. Fresh Faces Fans can expect to see plenty of fresh faces on the 2014 Rams. The second-year program brings in a total of 18 newcomers, including 11 freshmen and seven transfers. The new additions are expected to give the Rams plenty of competition and depth. Colorado Cup With a win over Northern Colorado, Colorado State earned its first win in the Colorado Cup. The Colorado Cup is a season-long tournament between the six division I teams in Colorado. This is CSU's first year as part of the Colorado Cup, which Head Coach Bill Hempen helped create. The Colorado State Rams (1-4-0) created plenty of promising attacks but couldn t find the back of the net, coming up short against the SMU Mustangs (3-4-0) on a chilly afternoon at The Lagoon. The Rams out-shot the Mustangs 12-9 and tallied six shots on goal, marking season-highs in both categories for the home squad. The six shots on goal also are tied for the most in school history, which had previously been done twice. Both teams possessed the ball evenly to start the match, with much of the possession taking place in the midfield. In the 20th minute however, the Mustangs found the breakthrough they were looking for when senior forward Shelby Redman blasted a shot that careened off of the crossbar. SMU s Lauren Guerra was there on the rebound to put the ball into the back of the net and give SMU a 1-0 advantage. The Rams rebounded nicely and immediately put the pressure back on the Mustangs but couldn t find a way to beat the Mustangs keeper. With the inability to find an equalizer in the first 45 minutes of action, the two sides went into the break with the score in SMU s favor at 1-0. The second half featured even more impressive play from the home side, registering a total of eight shots. Featuring attacks down both wings, CSU tried its luck at sending balls into the box, but still the finishing touch escaped the Rams. Colorado State s best opportunity of the night came in the 81st minute off of a corner kick from true freshman Janelle Stone. Stone s corner found senior defender Jami Vaughn about eight yards away from goal. Vaughn gave the ball a glancing header which looked poised to be the equalizer, but the SMU goalie was able to get a finger on the ball and tip it off of the crossbar, keeping the score at 1-0. Colorado State returns to action on Sunday against the College of Charleston. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. MT at The Lagoon. FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Ninety minutes was not enough on Sunday afternoon as Colorado State (2-4-0) and College of Charleston (3-5-0) battled under perfect conditions at The Lagoon. The Rams came away victorious, 1-0, thanks to a 94th-minute golden-goal from sophomore midfielder Amy Eckert. The goal was Eckert's second of her career, giving the Rams their second home win ever. Colorado State and College of Charleston were very evenly matched from the opening kick, with much of the possession from both teams being controlled in the midfield. The Rams' first shot of the day came courtesy of senior defender Catherine Ruder, whose effort from 25-yards out sailed over the bar. The Rams had plenty of promising attacks and combinations in the first half, but nothing came to fruition. After 45 minutes, the two teams headed into the break tied at 0-0. College of Charleston had a 6-2 shot advantage over the Rams, including 2-0 in shots on goal at the break. Coming out of the intermission, Colorado State's offense began to take form as it has in the second halves of matches all year. The Rams had five shots in the period compared to just one for the Cougars, and also racked up six corner kicks compared to zero for the visiting side. Pressure especially began to mount on the Cougars in the final minutes of the second half, when the Rams' pressure was rewarded with numerous corner kicks. In the 77th minute, freshman forward Janelle Stone delivered an excellent ball on a corner kick that found junior defender Megan Speed open six yards out. Speed angled her header down towards the corner of the goal, but a diving save kept the score tied at 0-0. Three minutes later in the 80th minute, Stone again delivered a dangerous ball off of a corner kick that found Speed unmarked on the back end of the goal. Speed headed the ball across the box which freshman defender Taylor Hodgson knocked on towards the goal, but her header rattled off of the post. The Rams had two more corner kicks in the 83rd minute, but neither delivered goals, sending the two teams into extra time after a scoreless 90 minutes. It didn't stay scoreless for long in the Rams' first overtime match of the year, as junior forward Gianna Bertana possessed the ball at midfield and attacked College of Charleston's defenders with pace. Once the Cougars' defenders committed to Bertana, the junior laid off a perfect pass to Eckert who buried a shot from the edge of the box to give the Rams a 1-0 win. Colorado State will travel to Missoula, Mont. next to take part in the Montana Invitational. The Rams will first take on the host Montana Grizzlies on Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. MT.
