2 HONORING A LEGEND Announced last week, CSU s annual fall tennis tournent was rened the Jon Messick in honor of the longtime head coach who retired over the summer. tennis community, current head coach Jarod Cerota said. His work with the CSU tennis progr is more publicized, but what he did for the ge spreads far wider than just our university. His contributions to the sport include running two charity tournents that benefit local non-profits, including Pathways Hospice of Northern Colorado and Ning the tournent in honor of Jon is the least we can do to show appreciation for all that he has done for Colorado State and the northern Colorado Crossroads Safehouse. He has also helped expand the USTA and is widely respected around the region and country. Messick began his Rs coaching career in 985, heading the CSU men s te for seasons. In 989, he added the women s progr to his plate, coaching bot squads for seven seasons before the men s te disbanded following the 996 season. Despite being made up entirely of walk-on players, Messick s men s tes won 0 matches over his seasons as head coach, and in 989 Messick was ned the USPTA Intermountain Division Coach of the Year. He will be most remembered for his 27 years guiding the women s te, however, where his ne has become synonymous with the progr at CSU. Messick has provided top-notch coaching and leadership to hundreds of Rs student-athletes and has patiently, diligently and intently guided CSU s progr through the most successful era in school history. Messick also played an integral role in CSU s current playing facility, the -court University Tennis Complex which was built in 20, and the Rs partnership with the Fort Collins Country Club, where the te holds its indoor matches. PAUSE, REWIND The Rs competed in two fall tournents in September, traveling to the Colorado Invite in Boulder, Colo., and the Air Force at the U.S. Air Force Academy. At the Colorado, CSU s four newcomers made their collegiate debuts, with each earning victories. CSU was most successful in singles play, winning matches, including three by freshman Riley Reeves, and two each by Alyssa Grijalva, Madison Porter and Celine Voss. At Air Force, it was the doubles action that was most impressive, posting victories and a winning record. The No. tandem of Grijalva and Porter won two of their four contests, advancing to the Flight A chpionship on Day. Reeves and sophomore Emily Kolbow (No. 2) went - and won Flight B before moving up to the No. position on the final day. Kolbow also competed from the No. singles position again, while Grijalva and Reeves each stepped up, playing from the No. 2 and No. singles positions, respectively. RAMS NOTEBOOK Prior to his one season at CSU, Cerota was an assistant at Northern Arizona (204-5), helping the Lumberjacks to a fourth-place finish and a semifinals berth in the Big Sky Conference chpionship. Before NAU, he spent two seasons (20-4) as a tennis pro at Northwestern. Cerota has previous head coaching experience, as well, holding three head coaching jobs. From , he was the head men s and women s tennis coach at Jacksonville University, followed by a stint as the men s tennis coach at Georgia State from , and three years (2009-) as the head men s and women s tennis coach at Mars Hill College. MEDLIN JOINS CSU STAFF After being ned the head coach, one of Cerota s first objectives was completing his coaching staff. He did that by bringing in Erica Medlin. Erica was my first choice, even before I got the job, Cerota said. I hired her because of her maturity and ability to coach, and she has incredible loyalty. She was also a great player, but that s secondary to her being a great coach and a hard worker. Medlin comes to CSU after one season (205-6) as the assistant coach for Northern Arizona. During her stint in Flagstaff, Medlin helped the Lumberjacks to a Big Sky regular-season chpionship and runner-up finish in the conference tournent. Four of her players earned All-Big Sky honors, with the top doubles te ranking No. 8 nationally. She is a former collegiate tennis player, spending two years at San José State and her final two seasons at Northern Iowa. As a senior in 205, Medlin was ned the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. She also earned two All-WAC honors as SJSU, helping the Spartans to their first-ever NCAA appearance. RETURNING TO THE COURT The Rs returned half of their roster from last season, a group that entered the fall with 48 career singles wins and 49 doubles victories. Senior Celine Voss is the veteran of the group, playing in her fourth season with the progr. Additionally, seniors Caroline Henderson (Kansas) and Madison Porter (New Mexico) began their collegiate careers elsewhere before finding their home at CSU. Henderson was slowed by injuries last spring, but ce back in to win three doubles matches and a pair of singles contests. Porter entered her senior season with 47 career victories to her ne (2 singles, 24 doubles), Just a freshman last year, Emily Kolbow earned six singles wins, competing at the No. - positions, and a te-high-tying five doubles victories. Late in the year, she won three singles matches in a row. NEW TALENT Under the direction of Cerota, CSU signed one of its top recruiting classes in school history in November, inking four four-star recruits. CAMEROTA AT THE HELM For the first time in seasons, the Colorado State tennis progr is under a new direction. Longtime coach Jon Messick retired following the season, and over the summer, Jarod Cerota his assistant during his final year was ned the head coach. We are excited to have Jarod remain at Colorado State, where he made an immediate impact during his time as assistant coach, director of athletics Joe Parker said at the time of his hiring. Throughout our national search, it become evident that Jarod had the ability to not only relate to our current student-athletes but also recruit talented players who will become the next wave of our tennis progr. I m really excited about this class, former head coach Jon Messick said at the time. If they work hard and continue to get better during their four years at CSU, they could be our best recruiting class and help us challenge for a Mountain West title. Messick said the things that drew him to these players were that they are great competitors, have a passion for tennis, wanted to be Rs and most importantly are great people. Additionally, all four are from CSU s main recruiting areas of California, Texas and the upper Midwest.
3 RAMS NOTEBOOK BOOKS ARE A TOOL OF THE TRADE The CSU tennis progr had the highest te grade-point average of any CSU te in 205-6, with all seven letterwinners earning Academic All-Mountain West honors. Additionally, for the seven season in a row, the Rs entire progr earned a cumulative te GPA above.20 to earn ITA Academic Te honors, with four student-athletes being ned ITA Scholar-Athletes. Included in the group is senior Madison Porter, who is a three-time Academic All-MW recipient and two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete HIGHLIGHTS Following back-to-back losses to Seattle and Grand Canyon to begin the spring, CSU rattled off four consecutive home wins. CSU beat CSU-Pueblo (6-) and Metro State (6-) on consecutive nights before blanking Colorado College, 7-0, two weeks later. The Rs wouldn t play on their home court again until, but when they finally did, they beat Northern Colorado, 4-, to extend the streak to four contests. Overall, CSU was 4- against tes from the Centennial State, with its only loss coming at Colorado in early. Three of CSU s losses ce to nationally ranked tes, including No. 45 New Mexico and No. 67 Cal State Fullerton. The Rs also played two tes receiving votes. CSU did not play on its home court from late February until the second week of, spanning more than seven weeks and eight matches. CSU was supposed to host South Dakota State on 26 but the match was canceled due to weather. The Rs snapped a seven-match losing streak in with back-to-back wins over Nebraska Omaha (4-0) and Northern Colorado (4-). COLORADO STATE QUICK FACTS GENERAL INFORMATION Location...
