San Diego State Boise State Wyoming UNLV Nevada New Mexico Colorado State Fresno State Air Force 211 For the second time in her career, Breann Fuller will compete in her sport s biggest stage. The senior from Brighton, Colo., qualified for the NCAA Championships on March 7 after posting qualifying times throughout the season. I think it s a charge for everyone on the team to know that they trained and competed with one of the elite racers in America, Head Coach Christopher Woodard said. That s essentially what it is; she s among the best of the best, and she should propel our team to earn that status, as well. Fuller, who has consistently been one of the best at her stroke, highlighted the 2013 Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships by breaking the MW record in the 200 Backstroke (1:54.40), a vast improvement from her previous school record of 1: Her time ranks 31st nationally, and earned her NCAA-B consideration. Times better than 1:53.17 earned automatic qualification for the Championships, while times faster than 1:59.19, like Fuller s, earned B-cut consideration. Depending on the number of A-qualifiers, the top B-standard times were then selected. Fuller will also compete in the 100 Backstroke at the Championships, ranking 37th nationally. At last month s conference tournament in San Antonio, Texas, she recorded her fastest time of the season and the fifth-fastest in MW history in the backstroke leg of the school-record-breaking 400 Medley Relay team (53.21). The NCAA Championships will not be a new experience for the veteran swimmer, as she also qualified in 2009, as a freshman. Then, she finished 48th nationally in both backstroke events. While it s a major accomplishment to earn NCAA status as a freshman, her coach is hoping she now has what it takes to place. I was just telling Breann, We re not going to this meet just for the experience; we re going to try to place, Woodard said. That s been her motivation all along. I think she feels comfortable among the elite, but I think she wants to not just show up. She wants to be in the conversation, and she wants to compete at night; she wants to be an All-American. The NCAA Championships will be set up like the MW Championships, with preliminary swims in the morning and final swims at night. The top 16 preliminary times will qualify for the finals. A total of 38 athletes qualified for each event. I think she knows how tough it will be, but her priority is to compete, Woodard said. She knows she stacks up with these elite swimmers, and she wants to earn a spot in the evening sessions. It s hard to say what that s going to take. What s a memory that stands out? Being here for five years, there have been so many. Definitely, though, doing the relays at Conference. We re tapered, we re going fast. Relays are so fun because you re with your team; it s not just you. My freshman year (2009), we got third. We had huge time drops, and it was just a lot of fun. What s your favorite restaurant? I love Austin s. They have this really good chipotle chicken salad. What are your goals heading into this weekend? For me, goals are for practice. At Conference, I had a goal for the 100 (Backstroke), and I didn t do as well as I wanted to. The next day, for the 200, I just let me competitiveness come out, and was determined to have fun and compete well. I didn t have technical goals, I just wanted to have fun. To me, having fun is winning. What gives you an advantage over some of the top athletes you ll be competing against? A lot of the girls fully tapered down. In a sense I did too, but I feel like mentally I m more on my game than I ve ever been before. I m hoping my body is ready, and mentally I m already there. Away from the pool, what s your favorite hobby? When it s warm I love to be out on the lake boating. After I graduate I m planning on moving out to San Diego, so I want to be a beach bum. If you could participate in a different sport, what would you compete in? If I was six inches taller, volleyball. Being in your fifth year, you ve been able to pursue a master s degree. What has that been like? This semester has already been really hard. My time management skills have definitely been put to the test. I m also doing an internship for 15 hours per week, so doing that, plus classes and practicing has been really challenging. Throughout her career, she holds five school records and has earned four Mountain West championships. She was a 2012 Olympic Trials qualifier and last month earned the Senior Recognition Award, which annually goes to the league s top senior student-athlete. Additionally, she has been selected to the All-MW team four times, and is a three-time Academic All-MW member. I m ready, I m excited, the senior said. We ve put in all of the work, and now I m ready to go. This second taper has been really good for me; it s been hard because there hasn t been anyone to swim with, but at the same time, everything has been so specific for my events and my stroke, so I believe it s helping me. Swimming at the 2009 NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas, Fuller finished 48th in both events (54.48 in the 100 Backstroke, 1:57.89 in the 200 Backstroke). The most recent CSU athlete to qualify for the Championships other than Fuller was Kristen Schneider, who also competed in the backstroke events in Shooting for the finals Thirty-eight athletes will compete in each backstroke events. After being to the Championships before, Fuller believes the awe that she experienced in 2009 will be worn off, and she s now looking to place. My freshman year I was awestruck when I was there, she said. I remember being in the locker room changing and seeing a bunch of girls with the Olympic rings tattooed on them. I was star struck and felt out of my element. I believe I m more ready this year. I know it s my last go around, so I have to leave it all in the pool. In order to qualify for the finals, she will need to be among the 16 fastest times during the prelims. The top 16 will swim again during the evening for the finals. Entering the week, Fuller ranks 31st in the nation in the 200 Backstroke, and 37th in the 100 Backstroke. In order to qualify for the NCAA Championships, Fuller had to reach a certain time standard throughout the season. For the 100, B-qualifying time is 55.09, which Fuller reached multiple times, with her fastest coming on Nov. 15 in Tennessee (53.34). In the 200, Fuller needed to swim a 1:59.19, which she cleared by 3 full seconds four times, including at the MW Championships where she set a conference record (1:54.40). Quotes from Head Coach Christopher Woodard On his goals for Breann: Her goals all year long were to make the Championships, but not to just get there. Whether it s a personal best, a school record, top 16 we want to go and have fun and celebrate that she s at this point, but we want to meet our goals and expectations. On how competing in the NCAA Championships in 2009 gives Fuller an advantage: There s been a big gap, so I think that will be a challenge, but she s not going to be a deer in the headlights. She s not the type to get easily intimidated. On what he s been working on with Fuller over the last three weeks: A re-taper is always a tricky thing because once you ve rested an athlete it s hard to give them a quick bump, and then rest them again. It becomes less about conditioning and more about the fine details. We ve worked a little bit on her strategy her rates coming out of the break and maintaining her kicks on the back halves of her swims but there s not too much more we can do; she just has to feed off the energy that s there and wow herself. On what makes Fuller successful: It s somewhat comparing apples to oranges because every kid has a different approach. However, coaching her, I do know that she s not one to give in. Generally, when you get to a meet of this level, everyone is a quality athlete, but I trust Breann on the last 50, the last 25, the last 10 yards.
