A message from the president Welcome to Colorado State University! Colorado State University is committed to student success. From their first Preview orientation to graduation and beyond, we want all our students to be well-prepared academically and personally for whatever challenges and opportunities the future holds. We can t run a successful, winning athletics program without a strong commitment to the success of our student-athletes. Earning a CSU degree is our ultimate goal for each student-athlete at CSU, and Ram fans can be proud that our players continue to graduate and succeed at a higher rate even than the general student body. In fact, our Ram athletes have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, educators, business professionals, public servants, parents, community leaders, and yes, even professional athletes. Their energy and experience, combined with a solid education, positions them to be champions no matter where the future leads. But all students can encounter obstacles on the road to earning a diploma obstacles often related to finances, indecision, desire for a greater sense of community, need for academic support, and sometimes lack of personal motivation. While student-athletes encounter many of these same obstacles, they also serve as highly visible role models and strive for winning records. As with all our students, CSU is dedicated to providing the resources and programs they need to achieve their full potential, with state-of-the-art training facilities, academic support, service-learning opportunities, and focused study environments. The life of a student-athlete is formed around hard work, self-discipline, teamwork, and a passion for achievement. That spirit matched with strong academic support systems and high expectations is a winning formula for Colorado State. We re proud to celebrate another great year in Rams sports and to recognize the students and fans who make it all possible. Go Rams! Colorado State Swimming & Diving [ 5 ]

world-class academics Colorado State University takes very seriously its role in educating student-athletes. Excellence is expected on the field and in the classroom. The most recent NCAA academic statistics reveal that Colorado State leads the Mountain West Conference in graduation rate for student-athletes at 66 percent well ahead of the conference s overall student-athlete graduation rate of 57 percent. In football, Colorado State is second in the MW, graduating 68 percent of its student-athletes again, well ahead of the conference average of 49 percent. Colorado State, however, is not resting on its reputation for graduating its student-athletes. The state-of-the-art Anderson Academic Center, which greatly enhances the academic facilities available for student-athletes, opened in August While the athletic department takes its role in the educational process very seriously, Colorado State s mission to provide a worldclass education is at the core of academic success. U.S. News and World Report ranked Colorado State in its top tier in its annual America s Best Colleges report. The university offers 79 majors and 27 minors, and many of its programs are ranked among the best in the country. Since its founding as a military fort in 1864, Fort Collins has anchored northern Colorado s rich heritage of academic, business and recreational pursuits. Hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, river rafting and rock climbing are just a few popular outdoor pursuits for students and residents. The city maintains more than 600 acres of parks, 5,000 acres of natural areas, 20 miles of off-street trails for hiking and biking, and three golf courses. A major-league metropolis, named by the Sporting News the best sports city in the United States, Denver is home to three teams that have competed for their respective world championships in the past 14 years the Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII champion Denver Broncos, the 1996 and 2001 Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche, and the 2007 National League champion Colorado Rockies, who lost the World Series that season to the Boston Red Sox. The Denver Nuggets, meanwhile, have made the playoffs in seven consecutive seasons, including a trip to the 2009 Western Conference finals against the evential champion Los Angeles Lakers. Sports fans in Colorado are among the most passionate in the nation, and for good reason their teams are winners. Denver has all the features of any big city, including great shopping and nightlife on the 16th Street Mall (Denver Pavilions, below left), a oneof-a-kind concert venue in Red Rocks Amphitheatre (below, second from right), an adrenaline-inducing amusement park in Elitch Gardens, and the world s 10th-busiest airport, Denver International. Both facilites were shown off at the grand opening celebration on Sept. 18, In 1998, Colorado State enhanced its weight room and built an academic center as part of the McGraw Athletic Center project, but these facilities no longer meet the needs of its expanded student-athlete base, nor do they allow the Rams to compete for top-quality recruits. Because of the heavy time constraints placed on CSU student-athletes through practice, travel, strength and conditioning, and community service, a quality learning environment is essential for the university s student-athletes to achieve the high standards of academic success expected of them. 16 Colorado State Swimming & Diving SEASON OUTLOOK - Expectations CSU is coming off its second-straight winning season, going 5-4 in dual meets last season. The Rams are aiming to continue to rise in the conference, and will lean on their young talent to do so. I think the expectations for us are definitely to improve, Head Coach Chris Woddard said. We landed a great recruiting class and so far we ve been really impressed by our freshmen in our work outs. We lost a very good senior class, but our hope is that most of our talent is young and with another season of experience, we will be a much tougher team. The expectations are just to compete. We don t know where we sit, but we will find out real soon. ON THE NEWCOMERS The Rams are anticipating a lot of production out of their talented freshmen this season. I think all of the newcomers have impressed as far as their discipline in the water, Woodard said. The biggest standouts on the swimming side are Tonicia Thomas and Mackenzie Halligan. Mackenzie comes with a pretty big resume and we knew Tonicia was talented, but she has taken over leading sets in work outs and has been a vocal leader. We have been very impressed with those two. ALL-CONFERENCE RETURNEES CSU boasted three all-conference performers last season - Katie Kicklighter (50-yard freestyle), Ariana Milone (1-meter springboard, 3-meter springboard) and Tess Simpson (100-yard backstroke). Both Kickligher and Milone return this season, and will figure to lead the Rams yet again. Milone s importance on the boards will be huge all season. She s one of the best in the conference and one of the best in the nation, Woodard said of Milone. She will continue to lead and after last year, breaking both school records, she s coming in on a high note and she is ready to rip for her senior year. Kicklighter, just a sophomore this season, will look to secure a lot of points in the pool this season. She sets the tone, Woodard said of Kicklighter. A lot of other athletes just [ 16 ] Colorado State Swimming & Diving

look to her to lead the way and score some serious points and she rarely disappoints. ON THE BOARDS Milone will certianly be productive for the Rams in her senior year, but there are still some personnel questions with a trio of freshmen entering the fold in It s tough to lose a leader like Mary Kate Hardy, but Emily Williams is a great veteran who always gets results for us, Woodard said. It s a new bag with three freshmen, who are all very talented and raw in their own way. I have no doubt that Kevin Witt will have them ready by the end of the season and they re probably going to be scoring points for us. We will find out against New Mexico, who has traditionally been one of the better diving teams in the conference. That s been a real sticking point for us, Woodard said. We had some postseason success early when I was here, but then we realized we were sacrificing the entire season to get there. This year, I think the team has a little more depth and a little more toughness, so that we can swim tired and still get some wins. If we do that, we won t get away too much from our training and focus for the offseason. We just have to have fun and relax and once we get to conference, and if we swim with a little attitude and with a chip on our shoulder and not be so intense. SEASON GOALS Although the Rams had a winning dual meet record for the second-consecutive year, the Rams wound up taking 10th at the Mountain West Championship. CSU will aim to not sacrifice any success in the regular season while still climbing the league leaderboard at the end of the season Colorado State Swimming & Diving [ 17 ]

Christopher woodard Head Coach Fifth Year Hartwick, / Christopher `Woody Woodard enters his fourth season as Head Coach of the Colorado State women s swimming & diving program. The Rams are coming off their most successful season during Woodard s era, holding a winning record and a fourwin improvement from to While the Rams had plenty of success in , Woodard knows that with an experienced lineup back in the pool, that the future of the program is even brighter. The Rams return 23 of their 28 letterwinners from last year, including their three All- Mountain West performers. In three years at CSU, Woodard has reestablished roots that trace back to a storied history that includes multiple top conference finishes and NCAA qualifiers. Under Woodard s watch, the Rams have set nine school records and in 2013, Woodard helped coach Breann Fuller, who was a Mountain West champion in the 200 Butterfly and finished in the top 25 in both the 100 and 200 Butterfly at the NCAA Championships. Woodard, a former assistant coach for swimming and water polo at Colorado State from , returned to CSU after six years at North Carolina State, where he was the associate head men s swimming coach and an assistant for the women s Head program. Coach Fifth Year Hartwick, 95 woody. woodard@colostate.edu 970/ In Woodard s 18 years of experience, he has assisted in coaching Olympic gold medalists Amy Van Dyken (2000) and Cullen Jones (2008), and was the primary coach for 14-time Paralympic gold medalist Erin Popovich. Van Dyken and Popovich are former Rams. During his tenure with NC State, Woodard s swimmers compiled 58 school records, and the women s team placed 29th at the 2009 NCAA Championships. Both the men s and women s squads were named scholastic All-America teams in Jones, before winning the gold medal in 2008, was the 2006 NCAA champion in the 50 Freestyle. While at CSU, Woodard helped coach the Rams to a dual-meet record from and produced five Mountain West champions with 14 school records. CSU finished in the top three in the MW each year from , including a 10-0 record and a regular-season championship in 2004, the same season the team was an NCAA qualifier. Woodard served as a volunteer assistant with the Rams from while obtaining his master s degree. Away from the pool, Woodard s teams have set the standard in the classroom. In three seasons as head coach, 20 Rams have earned Mountain West Scholar-Athlete status, the highest academic honor bestowed upon by the conference. Additionally, CSU has earned Team Scholar All-America recognition for seven times. The prestigious academic honor is awarded twice a year to teams with a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Before his time at the university level, Woodard served as the head coach for the Shawmut Aquatic Club, from A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he attended Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y., graduating in He earned his first coaching job after graduation as an assistant swim coach with [ 18 ] Colorado State Swimming & Diving

kevin witt Head Diving Coach Ninth Year Colorado State, / The Colorado State diving program will again be under great leadership in , as CSU alum Kevin Witt returns for his ninth season. The season showed hints of greatness, and the future looks even brighter for the Rams. Four divers qualified for NCAA Zones a year ago, and all four will be back this season. Ariana Milone and Paige Greely, both sophomores last year, rank among the topfive performers in CSU history. Milone earned All-Mountain West honors for the second year in a row, while teammates Melisa Bollig earned the honor for the first time this past season. The four NCAA Zones qualifiers were tied for the most in the Mountain West, and the most represented by CSU in more than a decade. Witt is no stranger to coaching in the area, serving 11 years as the head diving coach for the Poudre School District. In that role, Witt was in charge of managing the training and competitions for 20 to 25 athletes from Fort Collins, Rocky Mountain, Poudre and Fossil Ridge high schools each season. He coached both the men s and women s seasons, as well as handling the supervision and training throughout the year. Additionally, Witt continues to manage the Fort Collins Diving Club. He is the owner and operator of a private United States Diving Member Club age-group team. His responsibilities as head diving coach and owner include all coaching duties involving weight training, conditioning, and year-round training and competitions. Under his supervision the Poudre School District and the Fort Collins Diving Club have produced more than 50 high school state finalists, 17 Colorado High School State Champions, 14 National Interscholastic High School All-Americans, one National Interscholastic High School national champion, and multiple zone and national Junior Olympic qualifiers, as well as one Junior Olympic national 1-meter champion and two AAU National Champions on both the 1 and 3-meter springboards. More than 30 of the high school athletes that Witt has mentored have gone on to dive for NCAA Division I or Division II programs across the country. The Colorado High School Swim Coaches Association named Witt its Coach of the Year four times. He s also been named the Colorado Girls 4A Diving Coach of the Year (2000), Colorado Girls 5A Diving Coach of the Year ( ), Colorado Boys 5A Diving Coach of the Year (2002), and Colorado Girls 5A Diving Coach of the Year ( ). Witt graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business Colorado State Swimming & Diving [ 19 ]

MAckenzie brown Assistant Coach Second Year Colorado State, 08 Former Colorado State swimmer MacKenzie Brown begins her second season as assistant coach with the CSU swimming & diving program. She was hired by Head Coach Christopher Woodard on Sept. 11, As a former swimmer for the Rams and volunteer coach with the team, Brown brings with her a wealth of knowledge, in and out of the pool. We are very fortunate to have someone as qualified as MacKenzie in our own backyard, Woodard said. It has been my pleasure to both coach her and work with her as a colleague. She is innovative, hard working and very capable of making the transition to NCAA coaching. She has worked with some great mentors, including Fort Collins Area Swim Team head coach Chris Webb. I expect that MacKenzie will be a shot in the arm for our program as we continue to build a nationally recognized program. 970/ Brown was most definitely a shot in the arm, helping CSU to its first winning record in four seasons. Brown helped mentor a freshman class of 15, with many of them becoming immediate impact performers. As a former swimmer, she can also relate to the student-athletes in a way that others cannot. Graduating from CSU in 2008 with a bachelor s degree in interior design, Brown spent two seasons from as a volunteer assistant coach with CSU. She worked closely with CSU s swimmers and coaching staff, eventually helping to form a NCAA qualifier and Mountain West champion in Breann Fuller. Brown also created training programs for the Rams, and helped facilitate dual meets. Additionally, she was the 2011 recipient of the Doc Counsilman Award, given by the American Swimming Coaches Association for creative and innovative workouts. Apart from CSU, Brown was a coach for the Vortex Swim Club ( ), the Fort Collins Area Swim Team ( ) and Poudre High School swimming ( ). In each position, Brown strove to build athletes who have strong technical ability and are passionate about their sport. At Vortex, she expanded the senior group from three to 20 swimmers, and created training programs for the master level. With the Fort Collins Area Swim Team, Brown implemented training programs designed to enable swimmers to develop into competitive athletes at the local, state and national levels. Brown accomplished this while handling the logistics of scheduling, tryouts, statistics and meet planning. She has also gained experience volunteering as co-director for the Northern Colorado Swim Camp in Loveland for three years. Working with children ages 8-16, Brown developed dry land circuits, nutrition seminars and directed in-water training. Teaching and encouraging athletes to reach their fullest potential has become the true passion of my life, Brown said. I am thrilled for the chance to be involved in the program that gave me so much support and opportunity while I was a student-athlete Head Coach Fifth Year Hartwick, 95 woody.woodard@colostate.edu [ 20 ] Colorado State Swimming & Diving
