6-8: WEEK 2, DAY 1 STUFFED Demonstrate change of speed, acceleration and deceleration while controlling the ball Show that the knees are bent, body is leaning forward over the ball, and players are on the balls of feet Demonstrate different ways to manipulate the ball to get around an opponent Explain that overeating (too much energy in) and undereating (not enough energy in) does not give the right amount of energy to be healthy and active Ask players if they know what moderation means (in small amounts) and explain that some unhealthy foods (or special treats) can be eaten every once in a while and it is okay Ask players for examples of foods that should be eaten in moderation Explain that a tool to help us eat in moderation is to pay attention to our body s physical cues: we eat when we are hungry, and stop when we start to feel full ACTIVITY 2: Stuffed Set Up: 4 large cones 40 x 40 yd. grid, multiple disc cones create lanes by placing 3 lines of cones running down grid every 10 yds., groups of 4, 1 group per lane, 2 soccer balls per group Phase 1: Players work in pairs (2 pairs per group): 1 attacker (with ball), 1 defender Both players start on the same end line of 10 x 40 yd. grid Defender starts sitting down, identify defender as being stuffed after eating a very large meal Player with ball decides when to start dribbling across to the opposite end line The defender must wait until the dribbler starts and then sprints trying to beat the dribbler to the opposite end line Position defender in different starting positions (ex. back turned, flat on the ground, crosslegged, etc.) Change roles after 3 turns, keeping track of score, and rotate pairs every round Phase 2: Attacking player and defending player on opposite end lines Players play 1v1: attacker tries to dribble across opposite end line Defender tries to steal ball and dribble across the attacker s end line Soccer: Instruct players to keep ball under control with soft touches but take fewer touches further from body when accelerating Nutrition: Overeating can affect our energy level, often making us sluggish - the solution is to listen to your body and stop eating when you start to feel full Defender starts 5 yds. back from end line Player must stop ball on endline to score (not dribble over it) Progress to 2v2 for last 1-2 minutes; to score, players must dribble and stop ball on end line

6-8: WEEK 4, DAY 1 DECISION MAKER Demonstrate different ways to manipulate the ball to get past an opponent When shooting, place plant foot next to the ball with toes of plant foot facing the target, the foot should sweep through the ball with a locked ankle Ask players what the 5 Food Groups are (answer: fruit, vegetables, grains, protein, dairy) Show players the MyPlate and point out that ½ of MyPlate is filled with fruits and vegetables Ask players why they should eat food from all food groups at most meals Challenge players to bring in a food label for the next practice ACTIVITY 2: Decision Maker Set Up: 10 x 20 yd. grid, 2 small goals on same 20 yd. end line equally spaced apart, 1 disc cone in middle of 20 yd. end line, 4 groups of 4-5 players, half of players with soccer balls Phase 1: Players line up in middle of one 10 yd. end line, all with balls except first player Second player softly passes ball 2-3 yards in front of first player in line First player must dribble to halfway point before trying to score on either of the 2 goals In order to score the player must yell out a food from a food group (each attacker must choose a new food group when they score) Play rounds until they get to 5, signifying foods from each food group Second player must run and touch the disc cone before defending against first player Switch attacking and defending roles each round Phase 2: Same rules, but is 2v2: 2 players attack the goals and 2 players defend the goals Soccer: Use different parts of foot to change direction, attack a goal, and finish with the inside of the foot Nutrition: It is important to choose a variety of food from each food group Phase 1: Alter the length of run the defender must do if there is too little/much success by attacker Phase 2: If there is an odd number of players, insert the extra player as a neutral player who plays on the attack all the time

6-8: WEEK 5, DAY 2 STRIKE OUT SUGAR Wall pass: a short diagonal pass to a teammate, who then returns the ball with a one touch diagonal pass Double pass: a quick pass to a teammate, who then immediately return the ball with a locked ankle Overlapping run: explain that the overlapping player makes a bending run behind the dribbler into space in order to generate a passing opportunity Ask players how they know a food has sugar (ex.: it tastes sweet) Explain the difference between natural sugars found it fruit and added sugars found in unhealthy foods and beverages Ask players to explain how they can finds out how much sugar is in packaged food Challenge players to consume less than 20 grams of sugar a day ACTIVITY 1: Strike Out Sugar Set Up: multiple disc cones, set up several grids using 5 disc cones per grid - create 10 x 10 yd. grid with 1 disc cone in middle of grid, groups of 4 players, 1 group per station, 2 soccer balls per group - 1 ball on top of middle cone Phase 1: 3 players try to knock down the ball on the cone while 1 defender tries to stop them If defender knocks ball away, he/she trades places with the attacker who lost the ball Phase 2: Remove grids but keep balls on cones, give half players pinnies Identify balls on cones as foods with added sugar, have players assign the balls on cones a new added sugar food each round Non-pinnies try to knock down the balls on cones while the pinnies defend Play timed rounds Soccer: Demonstrate how players may pass to a teammate to get the better angle on center ball Wall pass: Player 1 passes the ball to player 2 who 1-touch passes it into space for player 1 to run into Double pass: Player 1 passes the ball to player 2 who immediately 1-touch passes back to player 1 Nutrition: We should knock out more added sugars from our diet Remain with Phase 1 if players are successful or responding well Progress to Phase 2 if players struggle in small setting to make passes

6-8: WEEK 6, DAY 1 VEGETABLE AISLE Demonstrate defensive stance (knees slightly bent, side on, one foot in front of the other, not crossing feet, small strides) Explain that when defending, you should get to opponent as quickly as possible, but slow down as you arrive Explain that when defending, if the attacking team plays the ball behind you, you need to make a speedy recovery to deny options for your opponent and to protect your goal Ask players how many vegetables they should eat each day (2½ to 3 cups - 12 baby carrots, 1 ear of corn, 2 celery stalks) Discuss the beneficial nutrients that can be found in vegetables (vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, fiber) Ask players what their favorite vegetables are Challenge players to eat vegetables at every meal, including breakfast ACTIVITY 2: Vegetable Aisle Set Up: 4 large cones - 30 x 30 yd. grid, 2 disc cones - one 5 yd. goal in the middle of the grid (identified as the vegetable aisle in the grocery store), 1 soccer ball per player 2 players are assigned a number (two 1s, two 2s, two 3s, etc.), and all players spread out around the perimeter of the grid Phase 1: Players dribble around the perimeter of the grid spaced a few yards apart so that all players are in continuous motion around the grid at the same time When coach calls out a number (1, 2, etc.), those players dribble into the grid toward the vegetable aisle The first player to dribble through the vegetable aisle and call out a vegetable gets a point, then both players return to the outside of the grid The rest of the players continue to dribble around the grid Game ends after one player gets to the vegetable aisle 3 times (representing the 3 cups of vegetables needed each day) Phase 2: Same game, except 1 player in the pair has a ball and the other player does not When their number is called, the player with the ball tries to score through the goal like Phase 1 The other player is the defender and tries to stop the attacker from dribbling through the goal Pairs keep score of points throughout the activity Soccer: Phase 2: teach a recovery run for the defending players Nutrition: Review the recommended daily serving of 3 cups/portions of vegetables a day Start activity with players carrying soccer balls in hands and with different movements on each end line (straight forward, side shuffle, back pedal, etc.) Players hips must always face 1 direction around the grid so that they use different parts of the foot to get around the grid

6-8: WEEK 8, DAY 1 - POWERBALL Emphasize looking up to establish eye contact to see the field, teammates, and opponents Demonstrate different ways to manipulate the ball to dribble, turn, and shield the ball Recognize when to penetrate open space with the dribble - demonstrate how ball can be pushed further away (2-3 yds.) when exploding into space Ask players how much protein they are supposed to consume each day (5½ to 6½ portions) Demonstrate what 3 ounces is (ex. 3 ounces of chicken is the size of a deck of playing cards), and note that 3 ounces = 3 portions, or about half of the daily needs for adolescents ages Ask players to share their favorite proteins Discuss some of the beneficial nutrients that can be found in proteins (answer: iron, omega 3 fatty acids, zinc, vitamin B12), and the overall benefits (builds strong muscles, bones, and skin) ACTIVITY 2: Powerball Set Up: 4 large cones - 30 x 30 yd. grid, 24 disc cones - 16 to create 4 distinct wrong zones and 8 disc cones to create 2 power zones ; power zones are centrally located at each endline, wrong zones are located in all 4 corners of the grid, pinnies for 1 team, 1 soccer ball labeled as a healthy protein (plus extras for quick restarts) 2 teams play against each other trying to gain power (score points) by bringing their protein (ball) into the power zone - by dribbling and stopping the ball in their power zone Opposing team tries to force players into wrong zones If a team is forced into a wrong zone they lose possession Teams play until one team gains full power by successfully making it into the power zone 6 times - signifying the importance of getting 6 ounces of protein each day Have teams label the ball a new healthy protein after each round Soccer: Recognize when to penetrate into open space with the dribble - demonstrate how ball can be pushed further away (2-3 yds.) when exploding into space Nutrition: Highlight the importance of consuming 6 ounces of protein each day and review healthy proteins Increase/decrease size of zones Teams can score a point by forcing opposition into the wrong zones Teams can also pass to a player in the power zone to earn a point Teams can play towards either power zone
