2 Page 2 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings MORNING ROAR Wednesday, December 6th, 2017 Roar Rings of the Ottawa 2017 MR. BIG SHOT that one for us. By JOHN KOROBANIK What can you say, a lot of close games, Koe, a two-time world champion, said of Morning Roar Writer his second straight 6-5 victory. Nice to win Kevin Koe remains the only unbeaten another close one against one of the front men s team at the Tim Hortons Roar runners. Every win out there is so tough. It s of the Rings by doing Tuesday what he still mid-week, what is it, Tuesday? Long way does best: make the big shot when the game is to go yet. on the line. The result kept Koe, Kennedy, second Brent Koe and his Calgary-based teammates Laing, lead Ben Hebert, alternate Scott Pfeifer had one of their more difficult games in the and coach John Dunn atop the men s standings afternoon draw, falling behind 2-0 early and at 5-0 and dropped McEwen s Winnipeg giving up a deuce in the ninth end to allow Mike foursome to 3-1. McEwen of Winnipeg to tie their game 5-5. But Defending Trials and reigning Olympic when it came down to the game-deciding shot, champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Koe was there with, for him, a relatively routine dropped to 2-2 after he squandered a 4-0 first-end hit-and-stick for one in the 10th and a 6-5 win. gift and lost 8-6 to Steve Laycock of Saskatoon. Third Marc Kennedy wasn t the least bit In the evening draw, world champion Brad surprised Koe came through again. Gushue made a last-rock takeout to score four That s what he does, said Kennedy. He and secure a 9-5 victory over Reid Carruthers to makes big shots when you need them. He won improve his record to 3-2. In his five games Koe has led only once MEN Skip Kevin Koe has made big shot after big shot this week to keep his Calgary team undefeated. Matt Dunstone (above back) made some big shots himself Tuesday in a crucial victory over Brad Jacobs. at the five-end break, and that was against McEwen. The two-time world champion scored three deuces in the final five ends to beat Laycock 6-3; scored two in the 10th and stole two in 11 to beat Jacobs 8-6; scored two in the 10th to get past Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton 7-6; scored two in nine and one in 11 to sneak by Reid Carruthers of Winnipeg 6-5 then stole one in the eighth and scored a single in 10 to beat McEwen Koe s game against McEwen took a dramatic turn in the eighth when it looked like the Manitobans were set up to score a possible three. But Koe ended that threat with a superb tight double that left him shot rock. McEwen came up an inch or two short with his final stone to let the Calgary team steal one for a 5-3 lead. If I put the first one in the right spot we re looking at putting at least a two on the (score) line, maybe three if he doesn t make a good one, McEwen said of his shot that was just exposed enough to give Koe a shot at the No lead is safe with Koe in hack double. We re in a good position to take the lead and we didn t manage the stone quite right. Gave him an out and he made a great shot. That was the moment we needed to go our way. So far this week, however, things have been going Koe s way, but McEwen remains hopeful of getting to the weekend playoffs. I know who the big boys are and I m hoping to have a better record against them then a losing one, he said. This was one of them, so we ll have to go out when we play Gushue and Jacobs, get a couple wins there. At the end of the day that s what it s going to take to get into the playoffs. Jacobs led Laycock 6-2 after five but gave up two in the sixth, one in seven and three in nine. You can t give games away and unfortunately that s what we did. I think that s only happened one other time that I can remember, Jacobs second E.J. Harnden said of blowing the 4-0 lead. But we have no other choice but to bounce back and keep grinding.

3 CURLING.CA/TICKETS Page 3 Russians get heave-ho Trials curlers in full support of Olympic ban By GRANT GRANGER Morning Roar Writer Curlers at the 2017 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings threw their full support for the International Olympic Committee s (IOC) ban of Russian participation in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The IOC made the decision after concluding Russia ran a state-supported doping system designed to protect athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs. Clean Russian athletes will be allowed to compete as independents. Russia had qualified a women s team for the Games, while a men s team is currently involved in an eight-team competition to determine the final two countries. A website, Inside Games, has reported curler Ekaterina Galkina, who played lead for skip Anna Sidorova at the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia was being investigated for submitting disappearing positive samples before the games. Sidorova beat out Calgary s Chelsea Carey for the bronze medal at the 2016 Ford World Women s Championship in Swift Current, Sask., although Galkina was not on that team. Sidorova was scheduled to compete in a series with Victoria Moiseeva to determine the Russian women s representative in Pyeongchang. Anyone that competed at the Olympics in Sochi, in theory, there s a good chance that they were doing something, Carey said Tuesday. It s serial cheating across the board. Every day we hear about a new scandal. You can t be allowed to participate in it. How do we know they re clean now? We can t possibly. How do I know that (Anna) Sidorova s team was clean at (Swift Current)? I can t know that. It s just not fair to everyone else that a country that has been proven to have that much corruption and collusion can compete at an event that is supposed to be for athletes that are clean. Jennifer Jones, whose Winnipeg team won the gold medal at Sochi and is sporting a 5-0 record here, has been following the controversy closely. As an athlete what you want to do is compete against other athletes on a level playing field, so you need clean sports, said Jones. We worked hard to make sure we were clean. I feel bad for all Russian athletes that have competed on a clean stage, but unfortunately, their program has obviously had some issues and so they need to rectify it. When the teams held their pre-event practice last Friday several athletes were asked to supply samples for testing. We check everything we put into our body to make sure it s OK, said Jones. You re always nervous to try anything new. You ve got to make sure whatever you re taking, even creams you re putting on your body, are OK. It s just where sport is, unfortunately, we have to be so careful because some athletes don t abide by the rules so there are strict rules in place, and I think it s for a very good reason. I wasn t sure what the IOC would do but they definitely took a hard stand. Chelsea Carey just wants a fair playing field for everyone. 4 Page 4 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings MORNING ROAR Wednesday, December 6th, 2017 ALL FOR ONE Team McEwen sticks together through years «GRANT GRANGER Elite curling teams switch players as often as soap operas dispose of characters. If they don t perform, they re gone. If a combination doesn t seem to be working they try something, or someone, different. Rarely do the same four players stick together for a decade or more, especially if they haven t achieved gold-medal status. That makes Mike McEwen s Manitoba team an anomaly. They ve had the same four players playing the same four positions for more than a decade through thick and thin. And there s been some pretty serious thick they ve had to wade through. It all started in the mid-2000s when McEwen and Matt Wozniak went looking for a front end. McEwen had played with Denni Neufeld in his last year of juniors (2001, when they won silver) so he signed him up to play lead. Denni suggested his younger brother B.J. as a second. That was a no brainer getting Denni on the team, says McEwen. We really didn t know Denni s brother, B.J., very well. We weren t sure. He was right out of juniors and we were all between 25 and 27 at that point, but Denni vouched for him and said, He s going to be good, he s going to be good. And he s better than we ever thought because Matty got bumped from third to second halfway through that year. McEwen and his men morphed into a top money-making team on the tour. But they also turned into the curling equivalent of the best golfer never to win a major. They struggled to reach the Tim Hortons Brier men s Canadian championship losing the Manitoba final five of six years. They finally made it to the Brier in 2016 when it was held here in Ottawa, finishing 8-5. This year they were third at the St. John s Brier. They weren t quite good enough to qualify for the 2009 Roar of the Rings in Edmonton, but the remarkable results that followed did give them a spot at the 2013 Roar of the Rings in their hometown of Winnipeg where they went 3-4. Winnipeg s Mike McEwen (right) and B.J. Neufeld are both teammates and friends. The disappointments didn t dissuade them from sticking together. Sometimes you think about other things, the grass-is-greener-on-the-other-side-of-thefence kind of thing, says McEwen. But there really hasn t been anything, it s safe to stay, that has looked better for us, not just as athletes but as friends and what we re doing with people. Our families are connected. Our wives, our kids and things like that. There just hasn t seemed like another opportunity that made sense. So we stuck it out. It probably forced us to find ways to get better rather than, OK, I m going to inject a new person to make us better. It really made us work harder. See ALL FOR ONE Page 5 There just hasn t seemed like another opportunity that made sense. So we stuck it out. Mike McEwen

5 CURLING.CA/TICKETS Page 5 MATT WOZNIAK DENNI NEUFELD All for one FROM PAGE 4 About a year ago, the frustration came to a head. Grievances were aired, although the air remained murky initially. It was bad. It was real bad, said McEwen. It wasn t so much what was happening on the ice, it was kind of what was happening off the ice. We weren t connecting really well as humans. We lost that connection and then it started to feed into our communication and how we went about our business on the ice. At this level, it doesn t take much to fall from grace. B.J. Neufeld says the team was pretty close to going in different directions. But doing so didn t make sense. I ve got a brother on the team. I was best man at Matt s wedding, he was best man at mine. So we were really good friends, recalls Neufeld. It was getting close to the brink, but we all got together and said it s worth sticking this out at least to the end of the Trials quadrennial. We would hate to see any one of us fulfil the goals we have with this team with another team. That s a pretty big motivating factor. We feel like everybody individually probably owes it to the other individuals to accomplish those goals together. And there would be nothing sweeter than to do so. After all this time there s a strong desire to take the next step together. We really want a championship for this team. Not just a provincial Manitoba championship, we want something with a maple leaf on it for how long we ve been going with this team. There s definitely a desire not to win just individually but for each other, says McEwen. Chris Neufeld, B.J. and Denni s father, had a front-row seat to the team s changing dynamics. Chris played second for the late Vic Peters for 31 years winning two Canadian crowns and one world title. They, however, changed thirds and leads frequently. The most successful addition was third Dan Carey, who is here in Ottawa coaching Reid Carruthers team. That would be unusual in curling together, in terms of staying together, says Chris of the McEwen team s longevity. First of all, they re great players. If you leave a great team, you re leaving something behind. They ve all got the same goals and they probably want to achieve those together instead of apart. At the time, he wasn t so sure the heated session was successful. I actually think they left the meeting still not knowing whether they were on the same page or not. But after three or four days of not talking to each other they realized maybe they could salvage something, says Coach Chris. Teammate loyalty seems to run in the Neufeld DNA. Even in juniors, I was never part of a team that cut anybody in juniors, and haven t been a part of that in men s either, says B.J. We have four guys that work incredibly hard and put a lot of time into the game and are very committed to being the best we can be. That s all you can really ask for in a teammate. 6 Page 6 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings MORNING ROAR Wednesday, December 6th, 2017 Roar Rings of the Ottawa 2017 Big Three dominate No surprise to see Jones, Carey, Homan at top By GRANT GRANGER Morning Roar Writer The cream of Canadian women s curling is rising to the top at the 2017 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings. Jennifer Jones (5-0) of Winnipeg, Calgary s Chelsea Carey (4-0) and Rachel Homan (4-1) of Ottawa separated themselves from the rest of the field with wins on Tuesday ahead of a first-place showdown between Jones and Carey in today s afternoon draw. Carey isn t about to change her approach to that game just because she s playing an Olympic championship team. You know they re going to make a lot of shots and if you win or lose that game it s not the end of the world, we re just going to try and come out and get better with every game like we ve been trying to do. We look at it as the whole week and not who we re playing, said Carey, the 2016 Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion. Carey kept pace with Jones by defeating Allison Flaxey of Toronto 9-3 in eight ends. We didn t expect that one to be as easy as it was, said Carey. They re a better team than that, but we ll take it, because we ve had a couple of close nail biters that have been hard on the nerves. Nice to have one that was a little easier. In the afternoon, Jones overcame a 7-5 deficit after eight ends in addition to challenging ice conditions due to rain and humidity with steals in the 10th and 11th ends to edge Casey Scheidegger of Lethbridge, Alta., 8-7. We made her make some tough shots. We lost the ice a little bit late in the game, and got fortunate to win that one. I didn t play well enough, I ll play better tomorrow (Wednesday), said Jones. We re finding ways to win. We never give up. Jones s team is on a 19-game win streak. They had seven wins in each of the last two Grand Slams leading up to the Roar to go along with the five they have here. Keeping it going isn t a priority. The big picture is. I just want to be in the final, so whatever it takes to be there, said Jones. Scheidegger (2-2) denied nerves were a factor on her final shot of a draw in which it appeared Tuesday s rain and humidity played a role in the ice conditions. Just not the greatest throw and tricky ice. It happens, said the frustrated skip. We felt really positive throughout the whole game. They re not Olympic champions without reason. They re great players and Jennifer Jones and her team are getting used to celebratory handshakes. They ve won 19 in a row. WOMEN they read the ice just as well as we did. Kudos to them, they hung in there to the end as well. Yeah, it s a tough loss, that s for sure. Homan defeated Toronto s Allison Flaxey of Toronto 5-3 Tuesday evening. Absolutely, we needed that win tonight, said Homan, who will play Scheidegger tonight. Flaxey played well, and we needed every shot. It was a really tight game and it came down to a couple of shots here or there. Everyone s got room to grow. We re still going to push as hard as we can to be as perfect as we can be out there. It s going to be tough, said Homan. We re finding ways to win. We never give up. I just want to be in the final, so whatever it takes to be there. Jennifer Jones

10 Page 10 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings MORNING ROAR Wednesday, December 6th, 2017 Curling s footsoldiers Leads, seconds form the front lines of game s elite Laine Peters takes pride in playing her front-end position. «JOHN KOROBANIK They are the quiet engine that drives every team here at the 2017 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings the front ends, the leads and seconds who park their individual egos and personal ambitions for the good of the team. They rarely get mentioned in the media. Their only real moments of glory come when they appear in the team pictures, briefly on television or perhaps in their local media back home. But they are the curlers who influence the outcome of every end, of every game, of every event by how well their shots create the opportunities for the thirds and skips, or how well they sweep for those shots by the back end. They always seem so surprised when they are handed an interview slip after games saying someone in the media wants to speak to them. One thing is certain, however: their value to their teams is certainly appreciated by teammates, including skips who get all the glory and attention. They are huge, skip Rachel Homan says of the importance of her front end, lead Lisa Weagle and second Joanne Courtney. Everyone s working just as hard, they just have different jobs. We all have different personalities for different roles and you have to have a certain personality to play front end and it s just as tough as throwing last rock. Your focus is just in different parts of the game. The front is just as important as the back end, that s for sure. They re unbelievable and they re why we re as good as we are. Denni Neufeld has been playing with Mike McEwen and his Winnipeg team for 16 years. He skipped Manitoba to a gold medal in the 1999 Canada Winter Games, then moved to third when he linked up with McEwen in 2001, eventually settling in as the team s lead. I enjoy my position a lot, he says of throwing lead stones. I take pride in my position and placing rocks pretty perfectly. I love sweeping, it keeps me in the gym and keeps me fit. And, like others playing his position, he s not in it for the personal glory. I don t mind staying out of the limelight and staying low-key. Laine Peters has an impressive curling resume that earned her induction into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame. She was an alternate, lead or second for six different teams that claimed six Scotties and one world championship, before settling in three years ago as lead for Chelsea Carey of Calgary. Whatever position you play you have to tone your skills for that position, she explains. Everybody out there takes pride in their position and being the best they can, rather than lobbying for other positions. One of the big differences between the front and back ends is the physical requirements. The physical conditioning of the leads and seconds impresses the heck out of McEwen. You can tell by looking on the ice, they re monsters, McEwen says of the front ends. How much time those guys are putting in on dryland training, thirds and skips get all the attention and the glory and that, but the front ends, they re working harder than I am. You can pick them out, there s not a front end out there who isn t big and strong. It s come to a point where you have to have that to compete at the elite level. And it s not just the men, either. The women are just as physically fit. It s just so much work, all the physical sweeping, says Laine. These are 10-end games to be able to last and be as effective at the end of the game as you are at the beginning, if you didn t do anything to keep yourself physically fit I don t know if you would make it through the whole game. While young leads and seconds can aspire to be thirds or skips through their early careers, by the time they get to the elite level they have settled into their spots and they re happy where they are. So where does their satisfaction come from, since it s not often through the media or fans? For me, I ve been playing a long, long time, says the 47-year-old Peters. To be still at this level is pretty exciting. So as long as I m with a group of people who are good to play with and we have a bit of fun off the ice as well as on, I think that s where the satisfaction comes from. And to be able to play and compete at this level. Occasionally they receive local recognition and honours, like SaskCurl this year introducing an award in Peters name to honour junior campers best demonstrating teamwork, sportsmanship, community involvement, and leadership skills Peters grew up Carrot River, Sask., and in recent summers has helped at junior camps at nearby Nipawin. I chose the winners and was able to present them with the award and I gave them each one of my playing jerseys, she says. I have so many of those junior curlers who contact me now and support me and I think that s really cool. Stuff like that, where you can really influence the younger crowd getting into curling, that s where the satisfaction is.

11 CURLING.CA/TICKETS Page 11 Roaring through the Years Underdogs take charge Gushue, Kleibrink triumph It may have been the most unlikely recipe for success in Canadian sports history. And yet, against all odds, a young Brad Gushue of the St. John s Curling Club and his team of Russ Howard, third Mark Nichols and lead Jamie Korab emerged winners of the Tim Hortons Canadian Curling Trials before a very loud and boisterous pro-gushue crowd of 8,450 at the Metro Centre in Halifax. And they did it by beating Winnipeg s Jeff Stoughton in the winner-take-all final, a skip who said in a newspaper article before the Trials got underway that Gushue had no chance of winning. But win they did, joining the Calgary Winter Club s Shannon Kleibrink as Canadian reps in Turin, Italy, for the 2006 Winter Olympics. Lord, Thunderin Jesus, Howard exclaimed later about his life-altering victory. It feels awesome, I tell ya. I could swim to Italy right now. The odds did appear long for Gushue in the crucible that is the Trials. Gushue, the vice skip but throwing last rock, was all of 25 years old and wore braces on his teeth. Howard, recruited from Moncton to skip and throw second stones, was nearing 50 and old by Olympic standards. And the team had been playing together all of six weeks. Going into the Trials we were the underdogs, said Gushue. I don t think anybody expected much of us going in there, except for us. He (Stoughton) said what a lot of people were thinking. I think if you polled 95 per cent of the people around the Trials they probably would have said we had no chance, either. But Gushue charged through the roundrobin posting an 8-1 record against one of the toughest fields assembled, and topped it all off with an 8-7 victory over Stoughton in The happy men s winners. Left to right, Brad Gushue, Mark Nichols, Russ Howard and Jamie Korab. the final a game decided by a 10th-end measurement. The win had a special significance for Gushue who revealed his mother Maureen was diagnosed with cancer and he had flirted with the idea of not curling that winter. She s been my biggest fan and her biggest concern was being here all week to support me, and the fact she put my curling that far above herself well, I guess that s what mothers do, said Gushue. Gushue also had high praise for fifth Mike Adam who had previously played second on the team but stepped aside to allow Howard and all his experience to join the team Mike is unbelievable, said Gushue. He s the MVP of this team. But Howard was the glue that held the team together. We realized that of all the things that we lacked going into the Olympic Trials that year was the experience of that big game, said Nichols. Russ is arguably one of the best curlers to ever play the game. He had been through every situation imaginable. We thought that experience and expertise would really add something to our team. The men s final turned on two ends. In the fourth, Stoughton was unable to draw the button against two Gushue counters, handing the Newfoundlander a steal of two and a 6-2 lead. To their credit, the Manitobans battled back. Stoughton scored a single with his final draw in the 10th, but a second stone that would have tied the game was measured and found just outside the rings. Stoughton advanced to the final with an 8-6 win over John Morris of the Calgary Winter Club in the semifinal. It was also a special event for Kleibrink who had finished second to Regina s Sandra Schmirler at 1997 Trials. Trailing 7-5 in the 10th end, Kleibrink made a takeout of Kelly Scott s final rock to score three and edge the young curlers from Kelowna 8-7. It s been a long eight years, said Kleibrink, We just got a little bit fortunate in that last end. Kleibrink seemed to have control of the game after taking a 5-3 lead in the sixth end, but Scott made a deuce in the seventh to tie it and then stole single points in the eighth and ninth ends to take the lead. It did go pretty wrong, pretty quick, didn t it? said a tearful Scott, who finished first in the round-robin and earned the bye into the final. Kleibrink defeated Saskatoon s Stefanie Lawton 5-4 in the semifinal. Dec Halifax The Morning Roar looks back at the previous Trials events The Olympics were held in Pinerolo, Italy, and Gushue won the gold for Canada, 11-4 over Markku Uusipaavalniemi. 14 Page 14 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings MORNING ROAR Wednesday, December 6th, 2017 He loved family... he loved life... he loved curling. Vic Rauter Ray Turnbull Former Canadian curling champion, Hall of Famer, instructor and longtime TSN curling analyst was one of a kind

15 CURLING.CA/TICKETS Page 15 By DAVE KOMOSKY Morning Roar Editor It was a fitting sendoff for one of curling s greatest ambassadors and a member of both the World Curling Hall of Fame and the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame. Family, friends, colleagues and occasional competitors of Winnipeg s Ray (Moosie) Turnbull gathered in October to celebrate the life of the Canadian sports icon who died earlier that month at the age of 78 after a short battle with cancer. The event, held at the posh St. Charles Country Club in Winnipeg, was a loving memory of the man told by those who were closest to him, including sons Reg and Al, daughter Leanne Pooley, grandson Lucas King, longtime friend Terry Braunstein, and master of ceremonies Vic Rauter. And what emerged after about two hours of tears and laughs was the image of a man who lived life to the fullest, who loved his family, friends, the sport of curling, a good time and, with it, a bottle of red wine. Italian, if you please. Braunstein told the packed audience, which crammed into almost every nook and cranny of the venerable golf club, about the first time he met Turnbull when both were in their early teens. They were on their way by bus to the Granite Club to curl. It was the start of a beautiful friendship that evolved into something more. He was like a brother to me, said Braunstein, who skipped an all-teenaged Manitoba team at the 1958 Brier in Victoria, which included Turnbull at lead. That Brier was the start of what turned out to be an amazing career in curling for Turnbull, who teamed with Braunstein, third Don Duguid and second Ron Braunstein to win the 1965 Brier in Saskatoon. The Canadians would go on to lose the Scotch Cup world men s championship in Perth, Scotland that year, but no matter. Turnbull was on his way upwards in the sport, eventually becoming a huge success as a curling instructor and a household name in broadcasting. In fact, the native of Huntsville, Ont., was a success at almost everything he tried, including the insurance business. How one could be successful on so many levels, as Turnbull was, is a matter of luck, timing and experience, but character, too. And Turnbull had limitless stores of character, as the speakers were only to willing to point out. They told stories of a man with a sharp mind, refreshing personality and a rock-solid set of personal convictions. He was a friend you could count on when things got tough, and a man of his word. Shortly after his Brier triumph, Turnbull became involved in curling instruction, eventually running a series of clinics worldwide, which had a huge effect on the development of the game outside Canada, particularly Norway. Turnbull later went on to achieve perhaps his greatest celebrity when he joined the broadcast crew at The Sports Network, working behind the mic from , covering the sport s major events. There, with Rauter and Linda Moore, he helped teach countless viewers in Canada and across the world the intricacies of the game, and became an advocate for the sport of curling. But he never forgot that what he was doing was entertainment, too, and enjoyed the give and take in the broadcast booth. He loved family... loved life... loved curling, Rauter told of VIC RAUTER assembled guests in Winnipeg. Rauter passed on a few of his favourite memories of Turnbull, including their last on-air broadcast together. Ray could get emotional, said Rauter, and he did on this day. As I turned to him to thank him for all the great years together, his eyes got a little moist and he said, Thanks, Rick. Twenty five years together and on the last day he calls me Rick, smiled Rauter. But that was Ray. He was one of a kind. He will be missed. SILENT AUCTION Let s make it a roaring success!!
