1 April 2017 Table of Contents President s Message President s Message 1 World Deaf Curling Championships Pickleball 5-7 Badminton Tournament Alberta Deaf Golf Club Spring Tournament CDSA Updates ADSA 2017 Events 14 Calendar of Events Alberta Deaf Pickleball Club, President Wayne Johnson and Vice President Rob Cundy, I am sure you are already overwhelmed by messages of congrats for the weekend s Pickleball tournament at ASD on March 18. It was a truly remarkable event. You should be justly proud of what you achieved. Congratulations! I am looking forward to have ADSA s 2-day Casino on April at Casino Yellowhead Edmonton. ADSA will continue sponsoring the athletes for participating the National/International Events, Canada Deaf Games, and World Championships. Canadian Deaf Darts Championships (CDDC) 2018 committee will host the Badminton tournament at ASD gym on Saturday, April 29. Sign up to play if you are interested, see the flyer and registration form for more info. - Grant Hard work and dedications are the ways to paint your success stories. Today whatever you have, you earn it and keep this spirit up always. Many successes are yet to come. 1

3 World Deaf Curling Championships 2017 WOW, what an experience! My first time at a World Deaf Competition, and I'd say a very positive one! Also, it was a first for me that competitive teams wanted a photo together after the loss of a game. The sportsmanship and the love for the game is evident and inspirational. This event reminded me to value the opportunities I have and fuelled my love for curling even further! Not to mention, Sochi was incredible. The Olympic park is such a sacred place, I'll never forget the indescribable feeling walking through there. I have to say, I left the week with new friendships and newfound pride for Deaf community. I feel so connected on a global scale now. Not to mention all the support we received from everyone back home, it was truly special to wear the maple leaf on our backs. I'm overwhelmed by the support we've received since I've come home, for winning the Bronze medal. It was tough to lose the semi, but we had a hard fought week after our early set back going 0-2. I've gained perspective and I'm choosing to look at this Bronze as a symbol of hard work and as an experience to build on. I'm excited to train even harder next year, and compete for the honour of wearing the maple leaf at the Winter Deaflympics in 2019! - Holly After a long hard curling training, winning Bronze medal was the best thing of whole experience. I never felt so proud of my team. It was so much fun seeing old and new friends. I felt like being in one big curling family in Sochi, Russia. Russian Curling Federation did wonderful job hosting for 3rd World Deaf Curling Championship. It was really inspired to see Sochi Olympic 2014 venues. Beautiful Black Sea and palm trees were my favourite sights. I will miss delicious Russian Borscht. I wanted to say biggest Thank You to Alberta Deaf Sports Association for sponsoring us. - Nyla I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated money to enable me to travel to Sochi, Russia to participate in the 2017 World Deaf Curling Championship. I am excited to report that our team came back with a Bronze Medal! There were many highlights of the trip. We played in the beautiful Ice Cube Curling Centre, in Sochi, Russia. It has a gorgeous and huge design outside, and the architecture is meant to celebrate democracy and accessibility. Seeing so many deaf athletes congregate there was amazing, and I felt connected to a much larger and universal culture. People were signing in Russian, Croatian, Polish, Ukrainian, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, to name just a few languages. Equally exciting was having the spectators and participants share in the universal hand-waving instead of clapping. I particularly loved that all the volunteers had at least one deaf parent or family member, so there was always someone available who knew how to sign. Finally, I loved watching the Ukrainian dancers performing in the opening and closing ceremonies. The trip would not have been possible without the generosity of sponsors and the many individuals who believed in us. So thank you, once again, for helping us to bring back a Bronze Medal. - Andrea What a wonderful experience I had in Sochi, Russia. I get the opportunity to meet new and old friends; sightseeing, view of Black Sea and to represent Canada! It is really beautiful and warm weather; I get to wear capri and tank tops. However, I do not enjoy the foods but I survive anyway. Bronze medal; I'm very proud of my team as we played very hard. We have been practice a lot and played in bonspiels - it really paid off. A huge thank to our coach, Taina Smiley, who really works hard with us. She has teach me a lot; I have learn so much and improve my skills. I really hope she will continue coach me and team. Lastly, I want to say a big thank you to Alberta Deaf Sports Association and Alberta Deaf Curling Association for support our team. Also, to all people who have donate us - without your support, we will not able to represent Canada. Again, thank you everyone! 3 - Sally

5 Calgary and Edmonton Pickleball Alberta Deaf Pickleball Club News A good number of new pickleball players from Calgary played pickleball. Seven players from Calgary will be in Edmonton for the 2nd Annual Zero Zero Two Deaf Pickleball Tournament on Saturday March 18th. Hopefully someday we can have a Battle of Alberta - Calgary vs Edmonton Showdown. I hear that there are several deaf pickleball players in Ontario playing and growing. (London, Belleville & Milton). Two players from Ontario will be coming to Edmonton for the tournament on March 18th. Ontario is thinking of hosting a deaf pickleball tournament in the near future. (I know several players from south of the border - USA may be able to attend). British Columbia is hot bed for hearing pickleballers and we need somebody there to kick start deaf pickleball players. Thanks goes to Alberta Deaf Sports Association for supporting Calgary group to rent the community hall to play pickleball. - Rob Cundy 5

12 CDSA Updates Canada did well at the 3 rd World Deaf Curling Championships earlier this month (March) in Sochi, Russia. The Men s team won a Gold medal and the Women s team took the Bronze. We wish to sincerely thank the Edmonton Host Committee for having organized the National Trials last January. We would like to thank Rita Bomak from Manitoba for her leadership in getting both Canadian teams (logistics, mission team and fundraising) ready for the World Championships. 12

13 CDSA Updates Danny Daniels, Chef De Mission and CDSA employee Gigi Fiset attended the Chef de Mission Seminar in Samsun, Turkey last February. The Board of Directors reviewed different scenarios for Team Canada s travel costs. This information was shared with all team managers and coaches as well as additional information about sport venues, competition schedules and Olympic Village. Note that the Canadian Deaf Sports Association General Meeting will be held on September 15 th and 16 th in Winnipeg, Man. The CDSA members will receive more information and documents in June. The 2018 CDG Host Committee is collaborating closely with the CDSA to develop various diffusion and planification strategies. Starting on April 1 st, general information will be shared with the PDSAs and community. This information will be about competition, registration and accommodation costs, etc. The PDSAs are invited to register their athletes and pay participation deposits between May 13 1 st and June 30 th.
