President s Message ADSA AGM meeting went very well with approved 2018 proposed budget and audited 2016-17 financial statements. We are looking forward our busy hosting events in 2018.

1 President s Message ADSA AGM meeting went very well with approved 2018 proposed budget and audited financial statements. We are looking forward our busy hosting events in We are sending Alberta athletes to Winnipeg on February 2018 for Canada Deaf Games which are officially scheduled for 5 different sports (basketball, bowling, volleyball, curling, ice hockey). ADSA office will be closed on December 18 until January 3. If any urgent issues can be sent to ADSA President at ADSAPresidentGU@shaw.ca. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May this Christmas bring your way plenty of reasons to smile. I wish you and your family a very Happy and Joyous Christmas Season. Christmas spells out love, hope and joy. It is with humbled hearts we thank Alberta Deaf Sports Association for recognizing Hugh Neumann, husband to Marilyn, our mom, and our beloved Dad, with the 2017 Honorary ADSA Member Award.

We, as his wife and daughters, have lifelong memories of Dad throughout his 40 plus years as a curler.

All the while we were cared for by the members of the Deaf curling community and infused by the sport we now appreciate to this day!

4 It is with humbled hearts we thank Alberta Deaf Sports Association for recognizing Hugh Neumann, husband to Marilyn, our mom, and our beloved Dad, with the 2017 Honorary ADSA Member Award. This was a complete surprise that left us emotionally quiet and unable to share our appreciation in the moment. Thank you to those who shared their recollections and spoke so fondly of him. We, as his wife and daughters, have lifelong memories of Dad throughout his 40 plus years as a curler. Many weekends were spent at the curling club being ushered about by other Deaf curlers and running around with other kids. All the while we were cared for by the members of the Deaf curling community and infused by the sport we now appreciate to this day! ADSA HONORARY MEMBER OF 2017 Hugh Neumann There was no other sport Dad loved more than the game of curling! He was sure to be found smiling when stepping foot on a great sheet of ice, with the competition of highly strategic players, and the comradery of fellow curlers. Faye Neumann, Carla Dupras, Marilyn Neumann and Grant Underschultz His passion for curling was undeniable and he had the pleasure of watching, learning from and finally teaching others as he gradually took a back seat when he could no longer play. In the past few years he was reminded of his own beginnings in the game as he watched his granddaughter accelerate her skills of the game, too! To have him honored and remembered by the members of the Deaf community, and more so by the curlers of past, present and future, we are so very grateful! - Warmly, Marilyn, Carla, Faye, Debra and all of Hugh's family 4

including Calgary, Penhold, Edmonton, Spruce Grove, Medicine Hat and Red Deer.

5 MALE AND FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR 2017 Bruce Gibson and Nola Johnson Both athletes have participated in more than 7 deaf and hearing pickleball tournaments all over Alberta this year, including Calgary, Penhold, Edmonton, Spruce Grove, Medicine Hat and Red Deer. Both have shown good leadership skills and are helpful in teaching new pickleball players in Calgary. Nola Johnson Bruce Gibson 5

6 CANADA DEAF 55+ GAMES RECOGNITION Amorena Bartlett, Grant Underschultz and Stella Stewart Stella Stewart, Chairperson of the 2017 Canada Deaf 55+ Games, presented Grant Underschultz and Amorena Bartlett with a plaque that encased a silver medal from the Canada Deaf 55+ Games in recognition of ADSA s contribution towards the Games. 6

10 ALBERTA DEAF PICKLEBALL CLUB Alberta Deaf Club members played at the Westlock Tournament on November 25 and 26, Congratulations to Steve Smith and Dennis Warick for placing a third place in 3.0 Men s Doubles. Other players participating in the tournament were Rob Cundy, Linda Cundy, Wayne Johnson, Amy Seiberlich and Daniel Zawada. They all had a great time.
