Rocky Balboa President s Message ADSA hosted High Five volleyball on February 20, There are only 6 teams registered to play. No teams were coming from Calgary. We had Euphoria party at EADCC after High Five volleyball tournament. The party has turned out very well and successful I want to congratulate Wayne Johnson and Rob Cundy for their hard work to make 1 st Pickleball tournament VERY SUCCESSFUL today. Everything went very smooth and well organized. No one is injured in the gym. I am impressed that they have some sponsors for healthy snacks, T-shirt, Pickleball bag, prizes, and others. It was nice to see a booth from Red Deer Pickleball Club and sold some racquets. Every player had a blast time and learned some new strategy plays from the hearing players. Well done, Wayne and Rob! ADSA has learned that ICSD s decision that after a careful deliberation of various arguments presented both in favor of and in opposition to a change in the location of the 2016 PANAMDES Qualifiers for the 2017 Deaflympics from Calgary, Alberta, Canada to Washington, DC, USA, we have come to a decision to instruct that the 2016 PANAMDES Basketball Qualifiers be held in Washington, DC, USA instead of Calgary. Despite the disappointing outcome, we still have support and understanding from our sponsors and the community. ADSA had the 2 nd annual Disc Golf tournament on May 28 in Calgary and it was a successful tournament with many players from Edmonton and Calgary. Our ADSA board had so much fun participating and learning new skills! Alberta Deaf Golf Club will host the golf tournament at Black Bull Resort on June 11 including the Brooker Cup qualification for Brooker Cup that will be held at Cochrane, AB on September 23-24, I hope everyone has a great summer! 2 Volume # 1 January-March 2016 INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF SPORTS FOR THE DEAF ICSD HIGHLIGHTS ICSD ACTIVITIES PRESIDENT IOC and ICSD signed the Memorandum of Understanding A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) was signed on 8 March at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne. 1 of 9 2

7 Alberta Deaf Pickleball Club Alberta Deaf Pickleball Club was founded by Rob Cundy on November Wayne Johnson is the current president of ADPC. We created a new ADPC logo: What is Pickleball? A paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. * A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. * Played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net. Played with a paddle and a plastic ball. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America. (source: US Pickleball Association) ADPC hosted its first annual ZERO ZERO TWO Pickleball Tournament at Alberta School for the Deaf Gym on March 18, Thirty players participated in the successful event. See website and video of the tournament. For the last two years 6 to 8 diehard Deaf Pickleball players played on a weekly basis outside weather permitting and inside ASD Gym during winter months. Since ADPC was formed, we have approximately twenty Pickleball members. First Deaf Pickleball group (August 2015) 7

9 Dolor Sit Amet June 2016 Pickleball Tournament continued Rob Cundy, Vice President of ADSA The newly formed Alberta Deaf Pickleball Club (Nov. 2015) hosted first ever Zero Zero Two Pickleball Tournament at Alberta School for the Deaf on Saturday March 19, Thirty players from Alberta Deaf Pickleball Club, Sherwood Park Pickleball Club, Spruce Grove Pickleball Club, Camrose Pickleball and Edmonton Pickleball Club participated in the successful tournament chaired by Wayne Johnson and Rob Cundy. A mixture of Deaf and hearing players who were able to tell scoring through ASL. The players competed for custom made awards that were pickleball jars (see photo). In the 3.0 and under group, Sid and Othman Rahall came in third place. Tina Tam and Doug Bowers from Edmonton placed first. For the 3.5 plus group, Rob and Linda Cundy came in third place. Dave Hesje and Mike Tibbo from Camrose won the gold. 9

10 CONGRATULATIONS! Nyla Kurylowich ADSA would like to congratulate Nyla on being chosen as Canada Deaf Sports Association (CDSA) Female Athlete Representative. We wish you the best of luck and look forward to your successes in your new position. 10

11 Long Term Athletic Development (LTAD) Young players need freedom of expression to develop as creative players... they should be encouraged to try skills without fear of failure. -Arsene Wenger LTAD for ASD Students As part of the Long Term Athlete Development model, ADSA provided After School Sports Program for Junior & High School Students on Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. biweekly at Alberta School for the Deaf. Our purpose is to follow the Long Term Athlete Development and to encourage the students to keep up with their fitness. There were four students that were very committed to the program. They learned about the fitness center and learn how to use the equipment. On the last day of program, to recognize their involvement - ADSA gave them a gift bag, took them to Jump 360 (Trampoline) and dinner. ADSA hopes to continue the program this fall and more students to participate. Big thank you to Amorena Bartlett and Sally Korol for making this happen! 11

One thing that I learned something new about sport is to playing pickleball. I never heard about it. Later, I started to like sports. Next time, I need to improve my exercise because I did not exercise that much. I will exercise every day for sure. I like to say thank you for teaching me how to play pickle. I will play it again next fall. Lastly, thanks for letting my friends and me to go to trampoline and dinner, I feel so happy and fun with them. Megan Lapointe - student I really, really, LIKE it!!!!! I really enjoyed it because I learned new sport that I never played before is pickleball. My favorite is pickleball and badminton. I want to improved my stamina for exercise, and runner. Thank you for inviting my friends and me to join ADSA and LTAD. I will be joining next fall

13 Disc Golf Tournament 2016 Baker Park, Calgary, Alberta Larry Henderson Thanks you for coming to the 2 nd annual disc golf tournament. It was a successful event! The players enjoyed playing a new sport, had good time chatting and laughing! I also want give thanks to ADSA for letting me host this event! Thanks donations from Calgary Lifesport and Dons Hobby Shop for awesome prizes. Thanks to all those that came to this event and I look forward to next year s event! Larry Henderson 13

14 Joel Kvarnberg Larry and I would like to thank you all for getting involved and making our 2nd annual disc golf tournament a huge success!! 19 players were involved, 1 player made it from Saskatchewan! Many thanks to Tom Johnston for providing the grill so that everybody can enjoy their hamburgers! The results was very tight with Larry Henderson coming out as the winner for men division at 58 points out of 56 points. 2nd and third were tied at 67 but were decided by the 18th hole points. Ashton Hnatuk of Sask won 2nd and Mark Duncan won third. The fourth place was only 1 point back!!! For the women division Pamela Henderson came out as the winner with 67 out of 56 2nd place goes to Rebecca Lehman of Cochrane with 77 out of 56 and 3rd place goes to Val LeCompte of Calgary with 82 out of 56. Ace Pot is a competition which each player have one throw and must attempt to make the basket from 25 ft away if they can't they try to hit the metal or closest to the basket will win the prize. Joel Kvarnberg won the Ace Pot with his disc being the closest. Longest drive is a competition which each player have one attempt of throwing their disc of their choosing the farthest. Connor Lalonde of Langdon, AB won the farthest. Congratulations to all and looking forward to the 3rd annual disc golf tournament!!! (It might not be Baker Park this time ;) ) - Joel Kvarnberg 14
