Pant, Vinay Desai & Keyzad Anklesaria Bulletin # 3: Friday, 7 th June 2013 INDIA leads in the OPEN Teams At the end of the yesterday s play (3 rd day) of the 17 th BFAME Championships, 6 rounds of the Round Robin-1 have been completed in the OPEN Team event. The teams will be playing 1 more round today to complete the proceedings of the first round-robin. After 6 rounds, the Indian Team (Mrs. Kiran NADAR, B. Satyanarayana, Sunit CHOKSHI K.R. VENKATRAMAN, B. PRABHAKAR & Rajeshwar TEWARI) is leading with 122 VPs. The Bangladesh team (ISPAHANI Mirza Sajid, KAMRUZZAMAN A.H.M., HOSSAIN Md. Zahid, HAQUE Shah Zia ul, CHOWDHURY Md. Asifur Rahman & RAHMAN Md. Moshiur) is in 2 nd position with 104 VPs, whereas United Arab Emirates & Bahrain are in 3 rd & 4 th positions with 103 & 102 VPs, respectively. See detailed results on page 2. INDIA leads in the SENIOR Teams The Senior teams completed their 1 st round robin of 3 rounds yesterday. The Indian team topped the 1 st round robin. The teams were given new numbering based on their 1 st round robin rankings. One round of the 2 nd round robin was played yesterday and at the end of Day-3, the Indian team comprising of Ashok GOEL, Vinod SHARMA, Sunit MACHHAR, R. SRIDHARAN, Kamal MUKHERJEE & Aloke SADHU are leading with 71 VPs after 4 rounds. The Bangladesh team is in 2 nd place with 63 VPs, and Pakistan is in 3 rd place with 54 VPs. See detailed results on page 1. PAKISTAN & INDIA share the lead in the WOMEN Teams The 1 st round robin of the Women s event was completed yesterday after playing 3 rounds. The Pakistan team were the leaders at the end of 1 st round robin with 54 VPs. The teams were assigned new numbers for the 2 nd round-robin, based on their ranks in the 1 # 3 ŀbulletin st round-robin. One round of the RR-2 got completed yesterday and at the end of 3 rd day the Pakistan team (AZWER Zeenat, AGHA Rubina, DOSSA Qudsia, BOKHARI Roshan Ara, SAEED HAI Rubina, RAZA Fatima) & the Indian team (DEORA Hema, KARMAKAR Marrianne, CHOKSI Rita, DEY Bharati, NARULA Tutu, SURANA Asha) shared the top position with 69 VPs. In case if it is the infringing player s scrren-mate who has passed the irregularity through the screen, the latter is deemed to have been accepted the auction on behalf of his side in those situations where laws permit LHO to accept it (i.e. Laws 25B, 27A, 2(A & 32A). Thus, 1 was deemed to have been accepted & now East bid 1 and in the ensuing melee, East-West lost their way & ended up in 4 and made the obvious 12 tricks on the 4 lead. 6 OPEN TEAMS RR1, ROUND -4 (PAKISTAN Vs BAHRAIN) Bahrain who finished Day 1 with 52 VPs started the 2 nd day with a crushing Victory over Pakistan, defeating them by 25-5 VPs. They started with a double digit swing in the very first board and there was no looking back after that. East passed and South corrected to 3D, which was axed by West. South in his second turn tried 3H and it was now East s turn to double. Play: West started with a Club lead, East won with the 10, cashed the Spade Ace and shifted to a small trump. Declarer won in dummy with the Jack and cross ruffed spades and diamonds, and later end played East for 2 down and 300 to Bahrain. Closed Room had a Director call when there was a misexplanation by the Pakistan East-West and the Pakistan pair ended up playing 3H doubled. Here again 2C Cappelleti was used by South and West bid 2D, which was explained as a transfer to hearts by East. (though it was a non-forcing 2D bid). North passed and East going along with the explanation he gave bid 3H. This got doubled by South and passed by West. But now North, thinking partner s DBL as takeout (considering opponents massive heart fit) bid 3S, which got doubled. After going plenty down, North called the director and informed about the misinformation given by East. The contract was reverted to 3H doubled by East. So we had the same contract being played on both tables but in different directions. Contract went -2 and +300 to Bahrain fetching them 12 imps. Play: Club 5 was led, East winning with the Ace and returning the suit. Shakir now had 4 top losers with the HK as the possible 5 th one. With an intent to finesse he played the Heart Q, but when it was not covered he played the Ace fetching the K, which now ensured he had 1 heart loser in the form of 10 of Hearts. There was no way he could draw 2 trumps at the same time end up in dummy to cash his winning clubs, hence he played the C K, discarding a spade, West ruffing, but now made the mistake of cashing the Spade Ace and that was the end for defence. Result 3H made for Closed Room played the hand peacefully in 2H, making 3 resulting in a push. There was a thought that this was the chance for Pakistan to get back in the game with a potential pick up in the form of Grand, but Alas the Pakistan pair in the closed room had a poor result when East opened 2H and West signed off in 4. Play: Declarer had 6 heart tricks and with diamond Ace onside meant 7 tricks and down one giving +50 to Pakistan. In the Closed room the Bahrain Pair of Noono and Abedi had no trouble reaching 4S, making 11 tricks. India faced Sri Lanka & I got into the vantage seat in-between R Sridharan & A Jaisinghe. The first edition of the back-to-back matches can be sub-titled as the Tale of Two Slams! India had jumped off to 33-0 lead largely because of errors by the Sri Lankan pair in the Closed Room, when BD-6 hit the table and the spot-light was on the East-West pair. In-spite of missing the lay-down 7, Sri Lanka earned 12 IMP to now trail After a further 9 boards where small IMPs were traded back & forth, India led Sri Lanka by 51-25, and as the last board hit the table, again the spotlight was on to the East-West players.
