3 3 The Long, Long Journey 13U Boys CASL Academy Juniors Snag National Championship This story begins twelve and half years ago... but we ll fast-forward twelve years. And this chapter ends with peaking at the right time. Let s start... Last fall, sixteen 13 and Under NCYSA teams played a three-game event to determine who participates in the Spring 2016 Southern Region Premier League. One of those teams, the CASL Academy Juniors won their bracket, going 3-0. Beginning in January 2016, the SRPL began, running through the playoffs in April. South Carolina and CSA Charlotte Torsion advance as 1st and 2nd to the playoffs. CASL finished third with an record and allowing a league fewest five goals. That was good enough for third, and placed them in the USYS NCYSA State Cup. The boys ran through their preliminary games, meeting up with in-state SRPL foe LNSC Force in the semis, coming out with a hard-fought 1-0 victory. That placed them in the final match with another instate SRPL opponent, the CSA Charlotte Torsion. As you would imagine, the game was a nail-biter all the way through the Kicks from the Mark, with the CASL Academy Juniors prevailing and advancing to the USYS Southern Regionals. It would be nice to say the boys ran through the Regional preliminary matches with ease, but it didn t happen that way. In fact, they didn t win a game, finishing with three ties and in second place in their bracket behind... SRPL foe South Carolina, whom they tied with earlier. But it was enough to advance to the Quarter-Finals. And then it clicked. They played Group A winner Oklahoma, winning 3-1. In the semis, they faced undefeated Concorde from Georgia and won 3-0, to set up a final against Lonestar from South Texas. The roll continued as they won 2-0 to advance to the Nationals! In Frisco, Texas, the boys won their first two matches of the tournament, 4-2 over Michigan and 2-0 against Syracuse. Their third match was against Cal-South. Both CASL and Cal-South knew, by virtue of their first two wins, they would advance to the Championship match... against each other. The match proved a great opportunity to allow other players on both teams a chance to get great minutes and time on the field, with Cal-South prevailing 2-0. Forty-eight hours later, a close up and down the field Championship Match was held with the CASL Academy Juniors winning the Nationals 2-1. Congratulations!

4 4 Seven Capture Regional Championships This past spring, there were 1018 teams competing in the NC Youth Soccer Classic League. We wouldn t know the full number of teams in every state in Region III that compete on a weekly basis. Some states smaller than others, while huge Texas is divided into two states (North Texas and South Texas). Let s estimate 600 teams per state (times) twelve states in the Region. That would equal over SEVEN thousand teams! Between the Presidents Cup Regionals and the USYS Southern Regionals, there are 24 Regional Championships available. North Carolina brought 7 back home! In the USYS Presidents Cup Region III Tournament, the 13UB CASL Juniors Red South, 16UB FSC Force Premier, 13UG CSA Charlotte Torsion, and 15UG JASA Coastal Surge Black all captured Regional Championships and advanced to the Nationals in Tulsa, OK. The 14UB TESC Elite and the 17UB WCWAA advanced to the finals, but were defeated in the last game. At Nationals in Tulsa, the 13UB CASL lost in their National Final 3-4, while the 16UB dropped their Championship match 0-1. The 13UG CSA Charlotte Torsion won their third place match 5-0. All four NC Teams did an outstanding job! In the USYS Southern Regionals, the 13UB CASL Academy Juniors (see article on page 3), 17UB CASL Red, 17UG CR S Burgundy Rapids captured Regional Championships and advanced to Frisco, Texas for Nationals. The 14UB CASL Red North was a finalist, losing to FL 1-2. The 19UG TFCA Alliance, also a finalist at Regionals, advanced to the Nationals as the Champion from SC could not make the trip. The 17UG CR S Burgundy Rapids lost in the semis 0-1 to eventual National Champion PA-East. All teams performed admirably! Seven out of twenty-four Championships! That s pretty good for our North Carolina teams. We would like to congratulate all of our teams on their performances at Regional and National play. Enjoy the summer!

14 14 NCYSA Policy on Heading The following is a letter by NCYSA President Keith Price, sent to the association Presidents and other officials. Greetings Everyone, You ve been asking for it. You ve been waiting, you ve been calling and FINALLY, we have an answer. August 9, 2016 the NC Youth Soccer Executive Board approved the USSF recommended policy for heading. Here it is - North Carolina Youth Soccer Policy on Heading. 11U and younger No heading. Games and/or Practice 12U and 13U 30 minutes per week w/ no more than headers per player, per week. No restrictions on heading in matches. The Referee Association has been informed of the Policy and they have received their instruction on how to address heading in matches. If a player deliberately heads the ball in a game, an indirect free kick should be awarded to the opposing team from the spot of the offense. If the deliberate header occurs within the goal area, the indirect free kick should be taken on the goal area line parallel to the goal line at the nearest point to where the infringement occurred. This policy will be effective beginning with the Fall 2016/17 season. This will also be the policy for all NCYSA Sanctioned Events. This includes but is not limited to NCYSA League Play and NCYSA Sanctioned Tournaments. If you have any questions, let us know.

18 18 NCYSA Policy Discrimination NCYSA saw a disturbing, upward trend during the Spring Season - a (small) rise in the number of racial and discriminatory allegations during matches. We feel (and assume you do also!) that YOUTH soccer is an all-inclusive game and there is no place for racial taunts and/or discrimination. On June 11, 2016, the NCYSA Executive Board adopted the policy below on Discrimination. It is now in the Discipline and Appeals Manual. Please familiarize your players, coaches, referees and all who work with the youth in North Carolina. Let s keep the game safe for everyone! 8.2 NCYSA Policy DISCRIMINATION For this purpose, Discrimination will be defined as anyone who offends the dignity of a person or group of persons through contemptuous, discriminatory or denigrating words or actions concerning race, color, language, religion, gender, origin or sexual orientation. When an allegation of Discrimination is verified by NCYSA the person is automatically suspended until the hearing on the act of Discrimination. The hearing will take place within 30 days of the notice. Anyone found guilty of discrimination will receive the following suspensions. PLAYERS 1st offense Minimum 5 matches 2nd offense 180 day suspension - Must complete Diversity training course before reinstatement 3rd offense 1 year Suspension - probation for remainder of Youth Eligibility ADULTS: Includes but not limited to Coaches, Referees, Spectators 1ST offense Minimum 90 days 2nd offense 180 day suspension - Must complete Diversity training course before reinstatement 3rd offense Lifetime Suspension Photo Courtesy of Creative Commons - flickr.com - USDAgov

19 19 Do We Really Want That Ejection? Courage is grace under pressure. - Ernest Hemingway The start of a new seasonal year is upon us. There are new age groupings with the birth year alignment. There are new players, new coaches, new referees. None of which will be impervious to mistakes. Last spring the Spring Classic season had 228 ejections. Seventy-seven (77) were for double cautions. An additional forty-six (46) were for foul and abusive language. Nearly 54% of all ejections were for those two reasons. While it may be difficult to determine how many were out of frustration, we believe a good many of those ejections (as are most all ejections) were created out of frustration... losing one s cool... momentary lack of judgment. So while mistakes happen, there is still a consequence. Let s take a minute now and ask ourselves, Do we really want that ejection?. Can we avoid it? Not all of them. As a player, you may get caught in the moment and have braingas. A coach may get excited in the match and keep yapping when they should sit down. And the referee may be on their third straight, hotly contested match and has heard a constant barrage of blather from everyone. Let s see what we can control in the match. Control - Yourselves. You can choose to react in an inappropriate manner, or not to. Can Not Control - Your opponent to an extent. If your opponent is heck-bent on clipping your ankles, you can choose to retaliate, square up, or not. Control - You get a really bad call against you or your team. You can bark at the referee... or not. Can Not Control - The referee. Believe it or not, they are not there to decide the match, but enforce the Laws. Some will do a better job than others. Cut them a little slack. Control - The ball and style of play, as best you can. Can Not Control - The field. Both teams will play on the same field. It may be bumpy. It may be smaller or larger. Adapt and use the knowledge you have as a team and player, and try to use it to your advantage. Control - Hydration. Rest. A wet, skipping ball, though it s harder to do. Can Not Control - The weather. Again, both teams play in the same conditions. As a player and team, you must adapt and try to overcome. If you concentrate on the areas you CAN control - style of play, possession, defense, etc., and try to block out the areas that are out of your control, you just may avoid a frustration caution, therefore avoiding a legitimate second caution that could put you out of the match!
