3 A Welcome from our Chairman It is a privilege to be elected for the second year as chairman of Blaenavon Blues. What a transformation the last six months has been, we now have our own clubhouse something this club has never had in its 65 years history. We also have a pitch which is one of the best playing surfaces in Gwent. Brewery and Visitors Centre Now Open on the Gilchrist Thomas Industrial Estate. Supporters of We have also taken over the junior section which is going to be a challenge for us as we hope to achieve better playing surfaces and improve the facilities to give them the best possible chance to improve and develop into good footballers. We have very good coaches at all levels and my thanks to them for taking so much time and commitment to the cause. 7 Pill A.F.C. - A brief history Pill A.F.C was formed in 1982 with two senior sides. Although most of the players played for the Y.M.C.A on Saturdays, it was their association with the Mariners F.C and latterly Pill Sporting F.C - who played on a Sunday - from which Pill A.F.C was formed. They played in the Premier and 1st Division of the Newport & District Saturday League. Founder Members were: Alex Beattie, Steven Murrey, Leo Powell, Mark Jenkins, John Payne, Ray Pulis, Andrew Cueto, John Crowley, Ian Archer, John Challingsworth, Steven Rowberry, Alan Williams, Peter Hale, Tony Cueto and Richie Willis. Gwent County League Division One Final League Table They won the League and Cup double in their 1st season. Their ambition was to achieve Gwent County status. It took five years to achieve that, gaining promotion to the 3rd division of the Gwent County League in 1987, winning that league at the 1st attempt. The following season they won the 2nd Division. It then took until 1996 to win the 1st Division. They have won more than 34 League and Cup trophies and have added a 3rd senior side. The 2003/04 season saw them drop out of the Gwent County League. A lot of the senior players who got them into this league were coming to the end of their playing days so they decided to start again with the many youth players that were coming through. This strategy seems to have worked because in 2009 Pill A.F.C. had once again gained promotion to the Gwent County League. After two years in the 3rd Division of Gwent County the 1st team gained promotion to the 2nd division, going up as champions 2010/11. Season 2011/12, their thirtieth year, proved to be their most successful yet with the 1st Team winning the 2nd Division Gwent County unbeaten and coming runners up in the Amateur Cup. The 2nd team won the Newport & District Premiership and the 3rd team won the Newport & District 3rd Division, also coming runners up in the Junior Cup.
