3 A Welcome from our Chairman It is a privilege to be elected for the second year as chairman of Blaenavon Blues. What a transformation the last ten months has been, we now have our own clubhouse something this club has never had in its 65 years history. We also have a pitch which is one of the best playing surfaces in Gwent. Brewery and Visitors Centre Now Open on the Gilchrist Thomas Industrial Estate. Supporters of We have also taken over the junior section which is going to be a challenge for us as we hope to achieve better playing surfaces and improve the facilities to give them the best possible chance to improve and develop into good footballers. We have very good coaches at all levels and my thanks to them for taking so much time and commitment to the cause. Lastly i thank all my committee members who have worked tirelessly to achieve what we now have. Best of luck to our visitors today and we welcome you into our new clubhouse after the match. 6 Match Report Pentwynmawr Athletic 2 - Blaenavon Blues 7 After both sides played out a 3-3 draw just a few weeks earlier at the Blues Memorial ground home, this was a must win game for both sides. The hosts started the livelier of the two sides and were unlucky not to take and early lead when Blues keeper Lee Jones made a number of good saves. But it was the Blues who should have taken the lead when Dylan Mason fired wide with just the keeper to beat. It wasn t long before the Blues did take the lead when Mason fired home after some great lead up play lead to a goal mouth scramble. The Blues doubled their lead before half time when the impressive Matthew Burns fired home. Half time 0-2 to the Blues. The second half was a dominant display from the Blues playing some superb football and opening the home defence up at will, the inter play between teenagers Burns, Mason and winger Illydd Caddick was very impressive as the youngsters who impressed in Saturdays draw away to Pill grew in confidence. The Blues soon found themselves three up when Mason got his second, before the 16 year old completed his hat-trick with a 35 yard shot that left the home keeper stranded in the sand covered box. Burns was on the score sheet again soon after when a great back heel by Mason opened up the home defence for Burns to coolly slot the ball home. The Blues made it 6-0 nil with an excellent 25 yard free kick from Craig Tanner which left the keeper with no chance, before the Blues made it 7-0 when Mason again finished with ease when through on goal. The home side managed to get two consolation goals from some slack Blues defending but the game was over as a contest as the Blues picked up a valuable three points that moves them eight points clear of bottom placed Pentwynmawr. An excellent display from the Blues. Marc Browning was outstanding in the holding role in the centre of midfield which allowed Burns, skipper Mike Waite, and Caddick the take the game to the home side, and four players were deserving of the man of the match award but that must go to 16 year old striker Mason who scored four of the Blues seven goals. 7 Match Report Pill 0 - Blaenavon Blues 0 Blues started this fixture against high flying Pill with teenagers Dylan Mason, Illtyd Caddick and Matthew Burns all in the side due to injuries. Blues started aggressively and from Craig Tanner s cross, Caddick volleyed just over. On ten minutes Mike Waite put Mason clear but the youngster shot narrowly over. Waite again made an opening, this time for Tanner, who lobbed over the bar. Best move of the half involving Jamie Brankley, Caddick and Burns saw Burns shoot wide of the post. At this point of the game Waite and Marc Browning were running the midfield and a surprise result looked a distinct possibility. With half time approaching Pill came into the game for the first time, their midfielder should have scored but fired aimlessly wide. In their next attack their big central striker hit the bar and on the stroke of half time the same player was clean through on goal, Blues keeper Lee Jones making a brilliant save at the striker s feet. The second half started with Jones again making a fine save from a Pill free kick, from the resulting corner Jones again came to his sides rescue, brilliantly finger tipping a goal bound header over the bar With Pill pressing for the lead, Browning made a very important goal line clearance. Blues came back into the game and a great turn by Waite saw the Pill defence open up and his through ball put Mason in on goal, his shot looked destined for the back of the net until a Pill defender cleared off the line. With time running out Matt Cox thought he had broken the stalemate when he headed Tanner s free kick towards the corner of the Pill net only to be denied by the keeper touching the ball onto the bar. Jake Bull was first to react to the rebound but his downward header was saved by the keeper. The final whistle went with Blues being the happier of the two sides, their back four were solid all game full backs Brankley and Grant Evans, along with centre backs Cox and Darren Harris dealt comfortably with the lively Pill front runners. 9 Our opposition today: Panteg F.C. Club History Panteg AFC was formed in 1947 under the name RTB Panteg (which became Panteg in 1972) as a team representing the local Richard Thomas and Baldwin Steelworks (previously Baldwin Steelworks). Gwent County League Division One League Table They played its home games at the RTB Sportsground, but in 1981 the grounds were sold to make way for a major road development. The club then relocated half a mile away to Panteg House Sportsground, where they have been ever since. The team have been playing in the Gwent County League since the 1999/2000 season, following relegation from The Welsh League. Panteg currently run two senior teams, the first team play in the Gwent County First Division and the reserve team play in the Gwent Central First Division.
