In the heat of a beautiful end of season afternoon the RCT Cup for Year 7 was contested between Bryn Celynnog and Hawthorn at the Maritime

In the heat of a beautiful end of season afternoon the RCT Cup for Year 7 was contested between Bryn Celynnog and Hawthorn at the Maritime sports ground. The very early stages of the game were dominated by Hawthorn as Bryn failed to keep possession of the ball and string any passes together. Despite the midfield dominance the Hawthorn team didn t really threaten to open the scoring and slowly the Bryn team got in to the game. The second quarter saw Bryn keep the ball with better passing and movement. Several sweeping moves ended in a shot at goal but it wasn t until Rhys Israel got on to a Ciaran Cox cross first, that the deadlock was broken, a cool finish saw Bryn go 1 nil up. Hawthorn threatened only briefly with strong surging runs from their capable midfield general, but he was ultimately contained by a well-coordinated Bryn defence. Just before half time, and after more stacking play, a speculative long range lob from Callum Salter found the Hawthorn keeper off his line and a second goal doubled the Bryn lead. In the second half Hawthorn changed their formation to a more attacking shape as they chased the game. Bryn competently dealt with the threats and were able to counter attack with Charlie Griffiths, Danny Jones and Ciaran Cox combining well down the right flank to open up opportunities on a regular basis. Lewis Harris benefitted from these attacks and coolly finished off two of the chances as Bryn stretched their lead to 4 goals. Hawthorn redoubled their efforts and worked very hard to free an attacking player inside the Bryn box and he finished well to get on the score sheet. Another goal followed fairly soon afterwards for Hawthorn as Bryn became a little sloppy in the final stages. They soon woke up from their torpor and scored once again at the death as Vaughan Howls, who had run tirelessly for the whole game, cruised unchallenged into the Hawthorn penalty area and rounded the keeper with aplomb to tap in for the final goal. Bryn Celynnog are the RCT Cup Champions for 2017/18, well done boys on a fantastic season. 2 Issue 113 Week beginning June 11th For this section of our Newsflash Booklet titled There s no business like show business, we were told that we were going to be looking at the Oscars or more exactly the acceptance speeches given at the Oscars over the last few years. We watched some celebrities give their speeches and discussed what made a good speech. We were then told we would be creating our own and presenting it to the rest of the class. We spent a lesson writing a draft, one lesson writing our formal speech and then we had to practise to make sure we felt confident reading them. When writing the speech it had to include: What award you had won Who you would like to thank What it took to earn the award brought in one of her dance trophies to be our award. When we presented our speeches, Miss Edmondson filmed many of them, taking pictures of others. In the lesson, we had a variety of different awards, And finally: from kayaking to astrophysics and everything in-between..we had What advice you would give to anyone who the lot! Football Success for Bryn Celynnog It was 10 months ago when comprehensive schools were asked to nominate girls to attend a trial with a chance of representing RCT schools in the Welsh Schools

3 Football Success for Bryn Celynnog It was 10 months ago when comprehensive schools were asked to nominate girls to attend a trial with a chance of representing RCT schools in the Welsh Schools Football Associations (WSFA) national competition. Many girls attended and a squad of 19 was selected by the WSFA selectors. 4 players were selected for Bryn Celynnog; Abbie Orrell Layla Williams Lily Newtown Millie Scott This was the 3rd consecutive year for all 4 girls representing RCT. The squad was strong but we had no idea that these girls would go on and achieve such success. The season started with a 4-3 defeat but the girls battled back from 4-0 And showed great character. Many victories followed and RCT found themselves in the Semi Finals where they confidently got the better of Bridgend Schools 14 1 on aggregate. The final was played on the 9th June in Penybont vs Caerphilly Schools. The girls were amazing and won 5 0 to be crowned WSFA National champions. Abbie Orrell The rock at the back and the heart of RCT defence, was immense in the final and throughout the season and the team s success was built upon a very solid defence. Layla Williams Captain, and led from the front, great leader and great player, goals, assists and an exceptional work rate. Lily Newton Our youngest player but you wouldn t think it watching her play, totally fearless full back, great pace and impossible to get past. A real asset to the team. Millie Scott Our Goal Keeper, very dependable, always in the right place at the right time and made key saves at key moments in our season. Great attitude and a very positive influence on the team. All 4 girls have shown excellent attitude and behaved impeccably. We are very proud to have them in our squad and are very proud of what they have achieved. Becoming WSFA national champions is thoroughly deserved and they are a credit to Bryn Celynnog Comprehensive School. Well done to the girls and their coaches, Mr G Williams, and our very own Mr M Maidment. Arbennig ferched.

Attendance Matters Absence Procedures It is essential that you contact the school before 9.00am on the day your child is absent.

Please call the school on and leave a voice mail message at any time. The school operates a First-Day-Calling-System to ensure that parents and carers and school coordinate any absences. Our Attendance Officers will contact you if your child is absent and we do not know the reason. To help with the smooth running of the system, please ensure you follow the school s procedure: Inform the school if your child is going to be absent from school because of a dental or medical appointment at least two days in advance of the appointment so the register can be marked appropriately. Telephone the school before 9.00am if your child is unwell or has an emergency appointment. Please give an indication of approximately how many days you anticipate your child being absent from school. If your child is absent for more than three days, please contact the school on the fourth day to keep the school informed. Also if your child is absent following a weekend please telephone the school on Monday. Provide a doctor s certificate if the illness is prolonged. Advise the school if your child is going to be late for any reason. If a child is ill during the school day they will be taken to the First Aid Office, where they will be seen by a designated member of staff (First Aider). A decision will then be taken whether or not to contact parents or carers. Every Day Counts!
