1 Rhifyn 112 Yr wythnos yn dechrau Mehefin 4 In glorious sunshine on the Tuesday before half term Bryn Celynnog s Year 7/8 Cricket team visited the picturesque Miskin Cricket Club to play against local rivals Y Pant. The setting was perfect and our host at Miskin had prepared a great wicket for the teams to play on. Bryn Celynnog lost the toss and were put in to bat by the Y Pant captain. As the afternoon sun relentlessly beat down the innings began. Y Pant s opening bowler was very quick and proved a stern challenge for the Bryn opening batsmen. Progress was a little slow and a few byes and leg byes were combined with very few runs off the bat. The opening bowler took the first Bryn Wicket as Jack Wharton was bowled. Joe Brooks was slightly more comfortable and managed to handle the pace bowling well, deflecting the ball around his legs for runs on the on side. The rest of the Y Pant bowling attack lacked any real threat and a lot of the time the ball was too wide to get away off the bat. One further wicket fell to the opening bowler in his allotted four overs and the batsmen were rotated in order to allow each player to get a chance to contribute. The scoring enjoyed a boost when Max Cleaton came in and smashed a few boundaries in a brief but aggressive spell at the crease. After toiling through their 20 overs Y Pant had conceded 100 runs exactly and taken only two wickets. As Bryn began their efforts with the ball it was clear that Y Pant had strong hitters early on in their batting line up. Runs came quickly in the opening three overs and it seemed that the 101 run total would definitely be in reach. A major swing in momentum then occurred as George Thomas bowled one of the Y Pant opening batsmen as he went for a big hit. Two overs later the other attacking batsman fell to a great high catch from Ben Massey at mid-wicket. This signalled the end of Y Pant s dominance with the bat and the scoring slowed dramatically. Bryn s bowling, though not as quick as the Y Pant attack, proved to be a lot straighter. A couple of communication errors amongst the batsmen led to two easy run-outs for Bryn and they emerged as comfortable victors by 32 runs as Y Pant were bowled out for 68runs. A great win for Bryn. 3 Hay Highlights Imagine the World On the last Friday before half-term a group of Year 8 and 9 pupils visited the fantastic Hay on Wye Literary Festival. Everyone agreed that it was an incredible day and it is set to become an annual event in the English Department s calendar. Students and staff were asked about their highlights and there were far too many to mention them all but here are a few: I loved seeing how engaged the pupils were in the event and enjoying meeting the authors after the workshop. I also loved seeing them avidly reading their new purchases on the journey home. The list is endless and I can't believe it's taken me this long to experience the wonderful festival. A definite must for next year! My Hay Highlight was talking about early feminism with Sally Nicholls. Her book about how hard it was for women was truly inspiring My Hay Highlight was having fun and spending time with friends, meeting authors and learning how they produce their books. I also met Rhod Gilbert, which was cool! My Hay Highlight was seeing the inspiration behind the books. My Hay Highlight was listening to Sue Turton talk about her experiences in different countries across the world as a journalist. She taught us that if you don t like something the way that it is then you have the power to change it I really enjoyed the whole experience; listening to the authors, buying books, being with friends and, of course, the hot chocolate!

Please call the school on and leave a voice mail message at any time. The school operates a First-Day-Calling-System to ensure that parents and carers and school coordinate any absences. Our Attendance Officers will contact you if your child is absent and we do not know the reason. To help with the smooth running of the system, please ensure you follow the school s procedure: Inform the school if your child is going to be absent from school because of a dental or medical appointment at least two days in advance of the appointment so the register can be marked appropriately. Telephone the school before 9.00am if your child is unwell or has an emergency appointment. Please give an indication of approximately how many days you anticipate your child being absent from school. If your child is absent for more than three days, please contact the school on the fourth day to keep the school informed. Also if your child is absent following a weekend please telephone the school on Monday. Provide a doctor s certificate if the illness is prolonged. If a child is ill during the school day they will be taken to the First Aid Office, where they will be seen by a designated member of staff (First Aider).
