1 ISSUE 30 Friday 12th May 2017 Dear Parents and Carers, Yesterday we held the Year 7 Parents' Evening and in true Oaks Park tradition it was very well attended by our families. The opportunity to discuss what your child is doing at school and how they are getting on is key to enabling our parents and carers to become more involved and better able to support. When schools and parents work together, children do better. Today we hosting our largest and most ambitious Careers Fair to date! Students from Year 9-13 are being provided with a fantastic opportunity to talk to a wide range of companies, universities and colleges, about what they can offer. Oaks Park is committed to helping pupils realise their career aspirations by being well informed, inspired and prepared for what is needed in the possible career paths they may follow. We are very pleased that we have such a wide range of providers attending today including; Ernst & Young, Sogeti, IBM, the Civil Service, Network Rail, What Uni?, the Royal College of GP s, as well as a wide selection of Universities and Colleges (please see page 2 and 3 for a full list of exhibitors). 4 Year 7 Promote Human Rights All students in Year 7 have been working hard on a group project in PSHE researching into an area of interest to do with Human Rights. They chose such topics as child slavery, the status of refugees, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the right to be educated with regards to girls in some parts of the world. They displayed their work in the Canteen during break and lunch and were so pleased that staff and older students took a great interest in the fantastic work they have done. Well done Year 7. Mrs Corton Head of Year 7

5 Last Tuesday, the following Year 8 students: Mahfuj Islam 8E, Yasin Rahman 8B, Gursharan Singh Bhadhan 8L, Alisha Woozeerally 8I and Raghavi Gowrithasan 8L took part in the Count on Us Secondary Challenge which is a maths tournament for Year 8 and 9 pupils, The tournament heats took place at Mayfield School. The competition tested students' ability to problem solve, tested their mental arithmetic skills and their ability to think on their feet. The competition was tough as they were up against neighbouring schools, Seven Kings, Little Ilford and Mayfield to name a few. The students did extremely well at representing Oaks Park; they were focused, determined and motivated to win their round. I am privileged and proud to say we successfully won our heat and are now on our way to the semi-finals in June at City Hall. Many congratulations to all five students on their great success. Mr M Choudhury Maths Department

6 Year 7 Cricket fixture The Year 7 boys played their first fixture of the season as they hosted New Hall School from Chelmsford in the under 12 cup competition. The odds were stacked in the away teams favour with a rich history of cricket at the school that has seen many players progress to county cricket. Oaks Park chose to bowl first and both Yasin Koatwall 7Y and Kaylan Pall 7P bowled tight spells against the impressive opening batsmen. Both bowlers picked up a wicket each but it was the spin bowling of Muhammad Zarar Khattak 7B that stole the show with two wickets and his four overs only going for twenty runs. New Hall ended up scoring 176 from their twenty overs. Unfortunately the second half of the match saw Oaks Park collapse to 18 all out. The standard of the New Hall bowling was very impressive and the Oaks Park batsmen couldn't handle the pace of the ball. Dylan Young 7P stuck around for a long time which frustrated the New Hall bowlers but wickets kept falling around him. For some of the pupils it was their first game of cricket and all the boys can be proud of the way they played. The Year 7 team will now enter the Plate competition were they will play Boswells school. Mr Wood PE Department

7 Oaks Park Year 7 Premier League Football Competition Week 2 of the Year 7 Premier League saw Londoners FC and ACMR continue their unbeaten start to the campaign with impressive victories. Londoners FC beat Sweaty FC 3-0 in a tightly contested game but the quality of the team showed through in the last part of the match to snatch victory. ACMR impressed with a 5-0 win over Underdogs FC which saw Josh Fage 7I score 4 goals in the game. Performance of the day came from 7U FC who beat Dabenham FC 6-0. Faisal Javid 7U played a key role in their victory as they move up the table into third place. Goal of the day was scored by Ricardo Pandim 7B, in the 1-1 draw between Gunham United and Tekkerz. Ricardo smashed the ball from the half way line, straight into the top corner! Remember, every voucher counts towards brand new cooking and sports equipment, and experiences. Get the kids to look in the car, on the fridge, under the sofa and in every old shopping bag for any missing vouchers. Good luck with the voucher hunt. The Active Kids Team
