1 Newsletter No May 2018 As predicted, emotions were running high at our year 11 Leavers Ceremony last Friday as we brought the students together as a year group one last time. Staff and students made speeches which provoked equal amounts of laughter and tears and it was a wonderful way to celebrate all they had achieved together over the last 5 years. Now the students are well embarked on their study sessions and GCSE exams. They ve made a fantastic start with 100% attendance and really motivated attitudes so we are confident they will do themselves justice. The population of our Animal Studies area is always changing and we recently welcomed the newest members of the school community and also the oldest! William and Jessie, two tortoises who have recently arrived for an extended stay with us, are 96 and 70 years old respectively but are looking pretty sprightly for their ages. They are spending their summer with us thanks to Shaun Graham in Year 8 and it s a great opportunity for the students on the Animal Studies course to learn a bit more about reptiles. The tortoises (picture left) seem very comfortable in their new surroundings especially now the sun has come out! SKI TRIP 2019 FRIDAY 15 FEBRUARY SATURDAY 23 FEBRUARY 2019 This year we will be travelling to Fiesch, Switzerland. We have visited this resort on a number of occasions and we are pleased to be returning.

2 Fiesch is a traditional and picturesque Swiss village which offers very good skiing for beginners, with a variety of nursery slopes and easy runs. More experienced skiers are also catered for by an extensive range of runs for intermediate and advanced skiers. With a high altitude, Fiesch has got a very good snow record. Our party will be staying in the Feirencenter sports complex where students are accommodated in dormitories. The Feirencenter also offers its own swimming pool which we will be able to use. In addition, the complex has a sports centre which we can use for evening activities. The dates: Friday 15 February Saturday 23 February 2019 The price: 985 The price includes: Ski passes for 6 days skiing Comprehensive personal and medical insurance 6 nights full board accommodation All meals (breakfast, lunch and evening meal) Full day ski tuition by British Ski Tutors at a ratio averaging 1:9 Hire of skis, poles and boots Travel by coach pick up/drop off point will be Sir John Lawes School The package does not include: Meals en route Ski wear (ski jacket, salopettes, goggles etc.) Ski helmet (which is compulsory) Pocket money This year there are 48 places available on the ski trip. Should we be oversubscribed, we will draw names from a hat after the closing date which is Monday 21 May Anyone who does not initially secure a place will be put on a waiting list. If your child is allocated a place on the trip we will provide you with a confirmation letter which will outline the instalment schedule and the various payment deadlines. It is worth noting that any child accepted onto the trip will be removed if their behaviour in school is deemed unacceptable. Those not allocated a place will have their deposits returned. If your son/daughter wishes to participate please make a non-returnable deposit of 250 via ParentPay before Monday 21 May PLEA TO Y11 FROM FOOD TECHNOLOGY Mr G Williams, Ski Party Leader If anyone no longer wants/need their Food Tech blue apron then we would be especially grateful to receive these as donations. We are running particularly low for those who forget theirs and spare aprons are always very useful! Many thanks in advance! MUSIC TOUR UPDATE Mrs Matthews / Mrs Wise / Mrs Beeres Rehearsals are going well for the Music Tour to Switzerland. There will be a couple of extra evening rehearsals after the Summer Prom (5 th ) and before the tour but we ll let you know nearer the time. Apologies again for the delay in confirming the final instalment, we are still waiting on some final details from the tour company, but the itinerary is shaping up to be very exciting! Students should keep checking the Music Noticeboard for any change to the rehearsal schedule. TOUR HOODIES Tour hoodies are available to order through ParentPay. Closing date for applications: 9am 21 May 2018 Date of Interview: 23 May 2018 HPV VACCINATION In line with the National Immunisation Programme, Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust school nursing immunisation team offers the HPV vaccination to all Year 8 girls in school. Your daughter will require two injections, with the second injection given 6 to 24 months after the first. If you would like to consent to your child receiving this immunisation please ensure you complete the electronic consent by 9am on Monday 28 May. They batted exceptionally well and made good decisions when running between the posts. Most impressive however was their performance when fielding. Both A and B games were well contested and close throughout but the teams kept calm and played sensible rounders, heading the opposition off at posts and preventing additional rounders being scored. Final scores A team won and the B team won Well done girls, we look forward to building on this performance next week when we play STAGs and STAHS!

5 Year 7 Cricket The Year 7 Cricket team have made a great start to their SJL careers with two wins out of two in the Cup competitions. Firstly, they defeated a strong Bishops Stortford HS by 22 runs in the County Cup. Batting first SJL scored 105 courtesy of Zach Marsh not out 29 and Josh Robinson 22, adding to the usual significant number of extras associated with Yr7 cricket. We then bowled BSHS out for 84 in 17 overs to move into the next round. Next was the District Cup against St Columba s College. This time electing to bowl first SJL restricted SCC to just 77 runs off their 20 overs with some good bowling from all. SJL didn t bat as well as in the previous game but managed to keep the scoreboard ticking along and despite losing wickets came to the last over needing 3 to win with two wickets standing. A two from the first ball settled the nerves, but then a run-out of star batsman Dan Purvis off the next ball left SJL needing one to win from 4 balls. In came Will Harris who remained calm under pressure to score the winning single at the first attempt. Well done boys! Outside of school Sam Herbaut has experienced success with his rugby team 'Old Albanians'. They won the Hertfordshire County Rugby Festival which took place over the weekend of the 21 st /22 nd of April. This was a highly competitive competition where 8 teams were represented in two pools of 4. Sam s Old Albanian side beat every team in their pool (Bishops Stortford, Barnet and Tring) and played the winners of the other pool (Camelot - Hemel Hempstead) where they defeated them 4-0 in the Final. They were excellent and Sam really played his socks off! Off the back of this Sam also now has trials for the county rugby team, we wish him all the best! And..

6 Last weekend was the Harpenden Cricket Club girls cricket tour! A group of girls went down to Surrey for a couple of days of cricket and PGL fun. The girls played fantastically, narrowly losing to Spencer CC on Saturday morning but emerging victorious on Sunday afternoon against Dorking CC. Pictured are the SJL girls who took part, Lucy Davis, Sarah Brookes, Sasha Bowler and Hannah Brookes. YOUNG PERSONS ART COMPETITION The Arts Society Harpenden Evening (TASHE) and Harpenden Area (HADFAS) are putting on an art competition for all young people either schooled or living in the Harpenden area. A showcase of local talent to celebrate the 50 years since the founding of The Arts Society, formerly NADFAS. Competitors can choose their own theme and work in a variety of media, both two and three dimensional. All categories of work and age ranges can be seen on our address (tasharpenden@gmail.com) along with rules and entry forms. This information is also accessible from our website ( The entry date is 22 nd June 2018, and entries from SJL should be delivered to Mr Higgins in the Art Faculty at Sir John Lawes School. The work will be judged by three independent people and there will be prizes in each age grouping and category.

7 There will be a prize giving on 29 th June at Park Hall, attended by winners, their families and invited guests. The exhibition, also at Park Hall, will be open to the public on 30 th June between 9am and 5pm.
