Chairmans Report 2010 Cricket This has been a very topsy-turvy season as we lost five first team players, and our first nine league and cup matches. Things came to a head after our home game against SBCI in July when the league withdrew Adeel Baig s registration. This seemed to galvanise the team and results picked up. Some of the notable performances came from unlikely quarters with Martin Burke picking up Well done to Dave and the first team squad for turning the season round in such adverse circumstances. Where did things go wrong this season? You could look at the number of players used in the first team, 26 compared with 19 in In 2009, 11 of the squad played 20 or more matches; in 2010 only 3 players played more than 20. The 2 nd team used 36 players, many being junior players all of which can be proud of the way they conducted themselves on the pitch with both their performance and attitude. On the playing side Steve Ashton scored three centuries to lead the way with the bat scoring 795 runs The Sunday team faired no better using 33 players, with 9 juniors playing 6 or more games. Well done to Lance and Steve who had a very difficult season, especially on Fridays and Saturday s when their phones kept bringing bad news of another player who couldn t play. If it wasn t for our strong junior set up and their eagerness to play at short notice I m sure we would have had to call off some matches this season which would have seen us relegated. From what started out as a very bad season, it ended up with all three teams staying in the top flight, and playing good cricket in the later stages, let s hope we can continue this form into Where we ended up: 1 st team 9 th, 2 nd team 8 th, Sunday team 6 th Centurions for Adeel Baig was our only player from the 1 st team to reach the land mark, while Steve Ashton managed 3 for the 2nds and 1 for the Sunday team. Dave and Will Milner made it a father and son double by both hitting 100 s for the Sunday team. Bowling - Karl Topham made it on to the honours board by taking 7 for 53 against SBCI
Thanks must go to Dave Townsend who has stepped down as first team captain. Since 2005 Dave has taken the first team to the semi finals of the Parish Cup, two 20/20 semi-finals, won the Roy Smith Division One League Title in 2008 and then the Premier League Title in 2009, the first time the club has achieved it. The captains for 2011 have been elected and are as follows Team Captain Vice Captain 1 st Craig Taylor Mark Thacker 2 nd David Peel Jnr Sunday Lance Greenwood Steve Pollard Good luck to all. Trophy Winners for st Team 2 nd Team Sunday Team Batting Chris Overend Steve Ashton Will Milner Bowling Karl Topham Dave Peel Jnr Will Milner Fielding Craig Taylor/Dan Houldin Andy Holding Jacob Linsel/Alan Carr Special Awards Player of Year Mark Thacker Steve Ashton Will Milner Stuart Pearson Players Player John Ashton 6 s Trophy A.G Nicholson Most Improved Player Richard Wilkinson Memorial Trophy Addison Dyson Award Mark Thacker Steve Ashton Jason Baxter Will Milner Gary Clarke Congratulations to all trophy winners
Junior Cricket A mixed bag for the junior sides this year, with the under 17 and 13 struggling in their respective leagues, and ending up at the wrong end of the table. The under 11 had a good season finishing 2 nd behind Elland. The under 15 managed by Tony Baxter and Captained by Macaulay Shiel won the league after a play off against Outlane, although it should have been wrapped up when we played Outlane in the last game of the season, with Tony away on holiday the boys put in their worst performance of the season to let Outlane join level. The good news was that Tony was back for the play off which they won in emphatic style. The future is bright, well done all. Our strong Under 15 team had two representatives for the Halifax league, Will Milner and George Hulme, congratulations to them both! The club also established an U9 s team this season, who performed very well in their debut season, finishing 2 nd behind Elland. Ladies Cricket This has been the 2 nd year for our ladies team, and it saw a vast improvements in their playing ability (must be down to the coaching). The ladies played twice against Lightcliffe this year losing a tight game away and winning their first match at home and in some style with 4.5 over s to spare. There has been a marked improvement in batting, bowling and fielding this year. On the bowling, over our first three matches we would bowl 30 odd wide s giving away 60 runs, this was cut down to half in our home match against Lightcliffe. This has to be put down to their enthusiasm in their training, turning out on some occasions twice a week even though they only had a couple of matches to play. They are hoping for a few more fixtures next season so if there are any wives, girl friends or daughters who fancy a game please contact Elaine Dean through the Pitchero web site.
Parish Cup Despite all our difficulties on the field, the club was given the honour of hosting the Parish Cup Final for the first time in its history. The ground looked as good as it ever had thanks to the hard work of Joe, Alan and Martin looking after the playing surface, and with the rest of the ground tended by, Messer Fox, Baxter and Linsel to mention a few. No one will ever struggle to find somewhere to sit now! The club has been complimented by the League and the competing clubs on the way the event was run - so a big thank you to everyone who helped on the day and the preceding months, getting the ground and the surrounds looking so good. As usual at BCC events the caterers were out in force with Julie and Sue organising the fresh baked cakes which seemed to come from all angles! Thank you ladies to all those who baked, and those who prepared sandwiches on the day. Let s not forget the BBQ staff who did a great job cooking up a feast, Burger King had nothing on Jonny Smiths flamed grilled burgers and sausages although at one time the flames became a bit too intimidating and a fire extinguisher was required!! Finances It seems a year doesn t go by without Steve Williams giving a glowing bar report at the AGM, and this year has been no exception! It has been another record year of takings over the bar. This can t have been achieved without our volunteer bar staff, who turn out during the winter months. Thanks to you all, especially the A team and our new recruits from the Linsel family. Anyone who would like to help, please contact me or put your name down on the diary of events on the notice board by the bar. With record takings come record expenditure, gas, electric, water, and insurance have all shown large increases this year and with vat going up next year we can t afford to stand still. Well done to Joe and Steve for your sterling work getting the books to balance. Website As you may have noticed our website has had a major break down, it is unlikely to be back up and running for a while. Tony had a virus on his PC which unfortunately lost all the information that was it, I know this caused Tony some sleepless nights, he had spent the last four years building the old website up and it was like a member of the family. Thanks to Tony for all the work he had done to build such a great website for Blackley, I m sure one day the phoenix will rise again! We are currently using a web based site for keeping everyone up to date. Why not create your own profile and join Blackley CC. We also have a Facebook Group Page
President Roy Chappell announced that he will be standing down as Club President at the 2011 AGM. Roy has been associated with Blackley for 50 years, and although he is standing down from active duty I m sure we will still see him about on match days and club events. I m sure you would all join me in thanking Roy for all the work he has done for the club as player and official over the last 50 years. Development Some of the work carried out this year. New sight screens at each end Umpire s changing room has been finished New showers were fitted in the changing rooms Benches outside changing rooms Banking partially levelled and re-turfed to improve access Roof tiles repaired on changing room roof Guards on changing room window Garden up the drive has been developed Next year we are looking at a new score board, new out field mover, practice netting, and new netting in front of the Fleece s garden all this on top of the day to day jobs that are carried out at the club. Most work is done on a Saturday morning so if you have some spare time, please contact a committee member and offer your services, you will find we are a friendly lot and will appreciated any time you could spare whether its half an hour or a couple of hours we can always find something that needs doing. Good luck to all players next season, and thank you once again to everyone on the committee who put in a lot of hard work, and to everyone who has given up their spare time to help make the club what it is today, the envy of the rest of the league. Gary Clarke Club Chairman
