1 Friday 1st March, 2019 Bikeability Training This week, our Year 5 pupils were given the opportunity to take part in Bikeability Cycle Training Programme. The training is an updated version of cycling proficiency. The children are given the opportunity to complete level 1 and then if they demonstrate the basics of balance and control, can go onto level 2, where they plan and make journeys on the roads around school. The training is all about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today s roads. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling. Well done to class 2W who had the highest attendance this week with 100%. 2 Red Nose Day Thank you to Tia-Lillie and Holly in Year 6 for their fundraising efforts in the last half term. They gave up their time and sold Red Noses around school during their break and lunch times. In just one week they sold all of our 8 boxes of noses! Thank you to parents for supporting this charity too. 3 From Tuesday 5th March 2019, Kew Woods will be part of the UK s biggest school battery recycling programme The Big Battery Hunt led by Duracell. School Council heard about this scheme and want to do their part for recycling batteries across the UK. Each pupil will receive a battery recycling box for any used batteries to be placed in at home. We would like any used batteries to be collected over the next few months and brought in over the week beginning 20th May Each school that books a collection for their batteries will be automatically entered into the Big Battery Hunt prize draw and Kew Woods has the potential to win some fantastic prizes: A 2-night class trip to the sustainability centre A 3-year subscription to MyMaths worth 1, worth of school equipment vouchers ipads Certificates and trophies School Council Project The batteries that we are collecting are AAA, AA, C and D and they can be any type of battery not just Duracell! We can t wait to see the amount of batteries we can recycle! Book Fair The book fair will be arriving on Thursday 7th March until Tuesday 12th March. It will be in the hall each night after school from pm. There are a lovely range of books on offer for all ages with some good offers available.

4 Knowsley Safari Park On Wednesday, Year 1 enjoyed a sunny day out at Knowsley Safari Park as part of their topic Rumble in the Jungle. They enjoyed a tour and saw a range of exciting animals including antelopes, lions, monkeys and camels. They embraced lots of new vocabulary including extinction, endangered, and camouflage. The children were also able to touch a snake, stick insect and a cockroach if they wished!. Many thanks to the parents who gave up their time and supported on their safari adventure.

8 Online Safety Information We would like to bring to your attention a social media challenge targeting children and young people called the Momo Challenge, that has created concern throughout the country due to its disturbing nature. We have attached some information produced by National On line Safety advising parents and carers what they need to know. However, There have been no reports up to now of anybody receiving messages or harming themselves as a result of the momo challenge. Parents need to be concentrating on educating their children about internet safety in the following ways: ensure they know what their children access on line and monitor on line activity; ensure children understand the importance of not giving personal information out about themselves especially to people they don t know; tell their children no-one has the right to make them do anything they don t want to do; use parental controls to keep children safe.

9 Sports Hall Athletics This week our Year 5/6 Athletics Team took part in the sports hall athletics event at Greenbank High School. Competing in both track and field events, they were fantastic representatives for school, performing well and showing great sportsmanship and support for each other. We finished 4th on the night. Well done to all involved.

10 Green Fingers! This week Reception returned to school and have been focusing on a new topic Green Fingers. On Tuesday they received some magic beans, just like Jack had in the familiar story, Jack and the Beanstalk. The children looked at how they could use these beans and decided to plant them. They realised they needed a pot, compost and water for the beans. On Wednesday, they had their very own BEANSTALK!

12 Celebration Assembly Congratulations to all of the children who were celebrated in a special assembly yesterday. In the assembly we recognised the children s social skills, their desire to follow our Code of Conduct and the academic or sporting achievements of individuals so far this term.
