1 Friday 13 th May 2016 Newsletter 28 1) Year 6 SATs Our Year 6 children have finished their SATs- Hurray! The children have worked so diligently preparing for these tests and, despite the national negativity surrounding these tests, we are very proud of how they have applied themselves this week. Particularly noteworthy are the efforts of Luke Edon and Abbie Amoah who despite being ill came to school to complete their tests before going home to recuperate! The test papers have all been sealed and posted for external marking and, assuming there are no more national blunders, results should be back in school in early July. 2) Year 5 Bikeability Due to an unforeseen cancellation, Year 5 Cycle Training (Bikeability) has been reorganised for next week. The dates for each class are listed below. All parents and carers are welcome to come along and join in the conversations with other parents about supporting future school events. EVERYBODY is very welcome. Your children can play on the apple computers while you drink coffee and eat biscuits at the meeting in the Year 6 area. 4) School Dinners Next week we are on Week 2 of the summer term menu. All menus are available on our school website, the hot choices for next week are: Monday Mediterranean Beef or Mediterranean Quorn (v), Pasta Twirls, Cheese Pasty (v) Tuesday Chicken Curry or Fish Fillet Fingers Wednesday Mince Pie or Margarita Pizza (v) Thursday Roast Turkey served with Sage & Onion Stuffing or Pasta King (v) Friday Tempura Battered Fish Fillet or Pizza Whirls (v)

They had the opportunity to look at and handle Shelley the snail, Tellulah the tarantula, Iceman and Maverick the millipedes, Fergie the Mexican milk snake, Dutch and Dylan the rats, among others.

2 5) Zoolab in Foundation Stage On Thursday the children in Foundation Stage were visited by the fantastic Zoolab. Rob (the ranger) was amazing with the children and explained all about the life cycle of the animals, their diets, habitats and their appearances. They had the opportunity to look at and handle Shelley the snail, Tellulah the tarantula, Iceman and Maverick the millipedes, Fergie the Mexican milk snake, Dutch and Dylan the rats, among others. Zane Gofton said, Zoolab was really good. I liked the spider. She was a tarantula that starts with t. The snake was orange and black and white. It was very smooth. Will Russell added, I liked the scorpion because I liked watching its tail move to get the blue light from the torch. It wasn t a very nice scorpion. The Nursery children were enthralled throughout. Austin Hornby said, We saw all the animals. It was good. I liked the snake. Max Connell was very brave and held all the animals. Zoolab was really good. We got to hold all the animals and the big millipede tickled my hand. We saw a frog that walked and did not jump. My favourite was the stripey snake, he wasn t slimy, he was smooth and soft. Thank you for coming Zoolab. I liked all the animals but the best one was the snake because it felt like jelly, said Molly Harland. The children were extremely lucky to have had this experience and have not stopped talking about it since! The staff have even learnt some interesting facts! Did you know? Shelley the snail has more teeth than a shark! Tellulah has 48 knees! Millipedes curl up in a ball to protect themselves from predators. If that does not work then they emit a very nasty smell! Fergie has 450 bones- more than a human! 6) Attendance Attendance has improved this week! The whole school attendance rate this week is 97.1% with a number of classes having 100% attendance, a significant improvement on recent weeks. The best attending classes this week have been: Reception and Key Stage 1 Reception Mrs Armstrong 100% Year 1 Mrs Todd 100% Key Stage 2 Year 3 Mrs Scott 100% Year 3 Mrs York 100% Year 4 Mrs Woodley 100% Year 6 Mrs Stephenson 100%

7) Yarm Fun Run The 2016 Yarm Fun Run will take place on Sunday 12 th June at 11am starting from Conyers School. Entry is 5 per adult and 3 for under 16s.

Lucie Ford in Year 4 has shown wonderful altruism and shared her hair after discovering the Little Princess Trust on the internet.

The wig can then be used for a child somewhere in the world receiving cancer treatment.

3 7) Yarm Fun Run The 2016 Yarm Fun Run will take place on Sunday 12 th June at 11am starting from Conyers School. Entry is 5 per adult and 3 for under 16s. Lucie Ford in Year 4 has shown wonderful altruism and shared her hair after discovering the Little Princess Trust on the internet. She was so touched by this charity that she has had much of her hair cut off and sent away to make a child s wig. The wig can then be used for a child somewhere in the world receiving cancer treatment. You can read more about Lucie s generous gift and hopefully even donate to this extremely worthwhile cause at Hi my name is Lucie I am 9 years old and I am cutting my hair and donating it to a charity called Little Princess Trust. The charity provides real hair wigs free of charge to boys and girls throughout the UK and Ireland that have sadly lost their own hair through cancer treatment, alopecia and other illnesses causing hair loss. I would also like to raise some money for the charity because it costs the charity between to make a wig, and it is my aim to be able to donate my hair and also raise enough money to pay for a wig to be made. I can t imagine how I would feel if I lost all my hair so I would like to encourage others to do the same - remember girls our hair will grow back and we are helping other little girls just like us! 9) Year 5 and 6 Football Team 2 match v Tilery: Team 2 played Tilery at their school last Friday 6th May, it was a really good game of football with end to end action. All of our children played fantastically and displayed brilliant effort, teamwork and football skills. This was a tough match but their hard work and determination was rewarded with a 4-4 draw. Well done to all involved, goals scorers: Liam Corner x1, Ben Hodgson x1 and William Beach x2. 10) Year 3 and 4 Girls Stockton Football Festival: Ten girls from Years 3 and 4 attended the Stockton Football Final at North Shore Academy on Monday 9th June. There were three leagues with each school playing four matches. In our league we won 1, drew 2 and lost 1, finishing 3 rd in our group. Annie Mitchell scored x1. All of the girls were fantastic on and off the pitch and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, a BIG SHOUT out to our team coach Charlie Cole (Y3M) who has been training the girls at dinner time in preparation for their festival. Evie McVeigh On Monday we went to North Shore School to play football against about 6 teams. The pitch was huge. We drew the first match 0-0 and the 2nd match was 1-0 to us because Annie scored. We came 3rd. I loved it and we all enjoyed it. Annie Mitchell On Monday we went to a girl s football tournament on AstroTurf. The pitch was massive! We took a big drink with us. We were in league 3. We drew the first match against St Patricks and won the second 1-0, I scored. Christ The King beat us. We had a really good time. 11) Year 5 and 6 Netball Team v St. Therese: Our Netball teams played a league match on Thursday 12 th May against St. Therese at their school. Team 1 won their match 4-2, Lucie Black x 2, Sophie Pollitt x1 and Millie Shaw x1. Unfortunately Team 2 didn t score and lost their match. Both teams played really well and showed big further improvements with their netball skills. Great teamwork and effort all round well done!
