Not everything is measured in 'wins' as so much more comes from the steps forward a team takes together to advance beyond where they have been before. I hope that everyone has seen development-in-action occurring as the weeks progressed. Heights Netball Club continues to thrive with registered player numbers having grown to 135. A big WELCOME to all new players and families who have joined the Club during I hope your experience with Heights will reflect our values of inclusion, fairness and development. DC Blaze Tournament Autumn Season wrap-up 6 7 A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the Election Day Cake Stall held at Northcote High School in March Thank you also to Michelle Henry and Jenni Webster for the successful 'Trivia Night' held for families & friends in May I think it will become an annual feature on the Heights calendar. Our participation in the Diamond Creek Blaze Tournament in April was a real team builder for all involved and we will carry that enthusiasm into our next Tournament in the second half of the year. Club contacts 10 Rudi Ellis from Vic Fury made a big impact when she joined training in early June At such a young age she has moved across Australia in pursuit of her dream to play elite level netball. She had much to share and was so positive. We appreciate the help afforded us with a Victorian Government Sports Grant - $2000 that will help us further develop our players, coaches and umpires during the coming financial year. So much is in store for the next few months so hold on to your hats and enjoy the break until we kick into the Spring season in late July. The links are now on our website under 'Register & Pay' so please read the instructions and click on the appropriate links. VNA will not need to paid again and should come up as 'free'. You can now pay for both Saturday & Thursday games at the same time. Those playing 11 & Under games please register as a Junior (not netsetgo) regardless of age. 'All other 10 year olds and younger please register through the netsetgo link ( not as Juniors). If you have any problems, please contact me. 3 Rudi Ellis trains with Heights It was a night of high enthusiasm as Rudi Ellis from the Vic Fury joined netball training on Friday 1 June P A G E 3 She encouraged the girls to keep having fun, to try out new on-court positions and build your versatility as a player. Rudi loved playing as a Shooter when growing up, but saw greater potential to join the elite level as a defender, so she developed her expertise as a Goal Keeper. As a tall defender she has all the qualities to one day make the top level. Rudi was very happy to talk with the girls and sign their shirts. It was a really good night for all and a great way to finish the Autumn season. Rudi Ellis joins Heights for an end of season training session Uniforms Our new A line netball uniforms have been a hit with players reporting increased comfort and easier movement they look good too! Given the great feedback, the Club will be rolling out the new style to our Netta teams as well. Uniforms can be purchased via the same link used to pay fees and picked up by contacting Heights uniform co-ordinator. 4 Batman by-election day cake stall The final takings were over $1,100. I think everyone will agree that makes it a successful day, especially for an effort pulled together at short notice. The variety of contributions was fantastic. It was great to see players, many in uniform, helping out and promoting Heights NC. Thank you to all the bakers and volunteers. We pretty much sold everything (Thanks to the tennis club making an offer on the final mixed plate!) Fun Fact: Dur- ing my roster a reporter from The Age asked some questions about how the cake stall was going (instead of the traditional "democracy sausage"). 5 P A G E 5 Trivia Night Fun! Our Heights trivia night was held in May and what a huge success it was with 91 people attending across all ages. Thank you to Michelle Henry for organising and all the other helpers on the night. 6 P A G E 6 Diamond Creek Blaze Tournament What a fabulous day it was for our teams chosen to represent Heights Netball Club at the DC Blaze Tournament on 15 April It was smiles all round for a day of great fun. Competition was strong but in every instance Heights players demonstrated courage, teamwork, resilience and good sportsmanship. The rain came and went and the wind blew, but nothing stood in the way of Heights grit and tenacity. Thank you Lydia and Jenna for coaching the teams. Thank you parents for all your good humour, patience and support. Thank you players for putting in the hard work and enjoying the day in a way which made all at Heights very proud. 7 Autumn Season Wrap-up This season the Heights Nettas have improved in leaps and bounds. Their passing and catching is much better and they are increasing their awareness of what they should be doing during the game. We have even managed to win a couple of games this season and I hope that continues into the next! As always there is still skills to gain and things to learn but with the level of effort that was put into netball this season they should be happy with everything they have learnt and should be gaining those skills in no time. Beatrice and I are extremely proud of all the effort that each and everyone of them has put in this season. Keep up the good work! Thanks Grace. The U/11 1 team have been playing in a higher division this season and have definitely stepped up their game. They have all worked hard at training and you can see the improvement in their game. The girls ended up winning about half and losing about half of their games. There are no finals in U/11s but if there was a ladder, that would put us about 4th with a couple of rounds to go before the end of the season. Overall it was a fantastic effort by the girls and I had a great time coaching them. At training we have been doing lots of drills that focus on passing (such as four corners) because they are doing lots of soft, high passes that are easy to intercept, which in turn means that they often struggle to bring the ball into attack from the defensive end. To help bring down the ball down the court, we have also been working on the making stronger leads (doing drills that involve dodging and drives). In the last couple of trainings of the season we are going to go over defensive throw ins with all the girls and work on some plays in the goal circle. Thanks, Helena U13 (1 & 2) This is an extremely promising group of young netballers. All of the coaches are proud of the achievements and progress players have made this season as individuals and as teams. Unfortunately the Under 13 1s were not able to get a win this season, although always going into each game with a smile and positive attitude. The under 13 2s finished 5th on the ladder missing out on finals by less than 1%. The thing that stands out to us the most is the enjoyment and fun all the players are able to get from playing netball. It is important for young teenagers to have a social outlet where new friendships can be formed as well as have a break from school and homework. Overall it has been a season of learning and we are looking forward to the next one. Jenna, Holly, Lydia and Sasha.

8 Autumn Season Wrap-up U15 1s: The u15 s worked hard this season with a team composed of only 7 players it meant that some weeks we played with 6 and sometimes 5 players. Shout out to Luke Mensingh from U13 2 s for continuously helping us out and playing for us when we didn t have enough players, you are a legend! The girls continued to push through even when we were players down and played a good season credit goes to them, one of the best games they played was with 5 players! Good job to the u15 1 s and I think that we will go even better next season. U15 2 s We have thoroughly enjoyed our first season of coaching the Under 15(2 s). It s been a very competitive season and we are proud of the commitment all the girls have shown, having only 7 players for most of the season. The sportsmanship they have shown has also been great. Thanks to all the parents for their support and it was good to see the girls choose oranges over lollies as their preferred energy boost at each game. Jenna & Holly U173 s: The u173 s have had a standout autumn season. They have dominated throughout the season, losing to the top team by only 3 goals and finishing 4th on the ladder. We have our final this Saturday, and I am very confident that they will smash it out! With 12 players in our team it was a struggle sometimes working out team combo s and dynamics, but all the girls have been great in playing different positions and trying new combinations which has been great to see. Great job this season guys, I am a very proud coach! Under 17 2 s This team has had an up and down season due to injuries and other commitments. As seems the norm with these girls they always finish the season on a high playing consistent, intelligent/ thinking Netball. All players have improved and are regular attendees at training and most participated in the Blaze tournament earlier in the year. The players are always supportive of each other both on and off the court. This has enhanced their sense of team and co-operation. Looking forward to a consistent season of netball in Spring. U17 1 s: The u17 1 s have had a fantastic season. Playing in the top grade of u171 s with some extremely competitive teams in the mix, our u171 s missed out on finals by one game. Last season we finished much lower on the ladder and so it is a testament to our continuing improvement and confident game play. I am

9 Autumn Season Wrap-up Thursdays U15 s: The u15 s on Thursdays have had a good season. Inconsistent at times where we may lose to a team below us but then also beating 3rd on the ladder by 8 goals. We have been competitive against the top teams and have been a finals chance. We lost last week meaning we can t make finals, but they have played some good netball and will continue to improve with each season. B5: B5 have had a great season. We started out slow and lost our first three games, but from then on, we were on a roll only losing one more game. We are 3rd on the ladder with one more game to go. The week before last, we had our best game of the season beating an undefeated top of ladder team by 6 goals. This team could win the grand final! Extremely happy with how the girls have come together and played some fantastic netball. B4: B4 have yet again continued to improve their netball. We have had a great season and are travelling at 6th on the ladder with one game to go (we are only one game off 4th place). B4 have been very consistent in their game play and continue to work hard for the entire four quarters of each game. They now look like a team that has been playing together for years and they have a great bond as team. Well done girls, proud pf you guys! Premier Open Tuesday At the beginning of 2018 there was 4 definite players then by the end of the season there was 11.the team is a mixture of older and younger players and of varying levels of experience and skill. It took a few games to start gel but with the work commitments, holidays and injuries the team never really settled. But at the back end of the season there were signs of a team that had started to gel. We finished fifth but realistically we are at about second place. It was with pride I watched the older players guiding both the new and younger players. The Heights team was displaying its family values. Training was a problem especially as there was not a permanent venue and it had to be on a Sunday. We managed 3 training sessions. For the Spring season 2 players have left due to work and travel commitments. But we have 2 of our junior players stepping up. I am looking forward to a positive and successful spring season with more scheduled training sessions. Thank you to Julia and Tracy who have stepped up when I was away. Thank you also to Chris our dedicated supporter and scorer. Gayle as the star coach and her daughter Julia 'rock-solid' as a defender, it makes for an awesome combination. Lydia, Jenna, Sasha, Cass, Tracy, Iona, Shannyn, Laura and Suzanna round out a strong and versatile Tuesday night squad.
