WELCOME TO THE KIDZPLAY NETBALL 2017 WINTER LEAGUE Founded in 1999, Kidzplay Netball is an open netball league for Year 1 5 players. We offer an environment for children to have the opportunity to have fun while learning ball skills, team work, fair play and the pure enjoyment of playing a sport. The 2017 Winter League will run from 13 May to 1 July (excluding 3 June - Queen s Birthday) and from 29 July to 9 September (14 weeks). Note that some games are played in some schools holidays. All games are played on Saturdays at Pinehurst School, Bush Road, Albany from 8.45am until mid afternoon. Time for the final game depends on the number of teams involved in the league. Kidzplay Netball offers netball variants to suit each year level. Year 1 children play a non-competitive league 6-a-side version of netball and Year 2 upwards play 7-a-side netball with a variance to rules that ensure the players grow into the full game as they mature. Year 1 children play on a 3/4 size court with a size 4 netball and shoot at 1.8m (6ft) goal posts. Six players make up a team of 2 x centres; 2 x defenders; 2 x attackers. Please refer to the Kidzplay Netball website for more information. If the team is using their own umpire this person must be an adult willing to work with our mentors. Year 2 play on a full size court, with a size 4 netball and shoot at 2.3m (7ft 6inch) goals. These children are placed into the traditional positions of netball but the main emphasis is on the understanding of passing the ball down the court towards their goal and then shooting a goal. Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 play on a full size court with a size 4 netball and shoot at 2.6m (8ft 6inch) goal posts. The players quickly develop their skills and the understanding of netball. Year 5/6 Mix grade. This grade will give smaller schools the opportunity to enter a team in this age group. Rules of engagement: Maximum of 3 x Year 6 players on the court at any given time Play with a size 5 netball and shoot at 3.05m (10ft) goal posts Rotations are not necessary Games are two 15 minute halves with a 2 minute half time break If it is deemed necessary for a Year 5/6 team to be graded into a Year 5 grade, they will play to that grades rotation, goal post and ball size rules. The maximum of 3 x Year 6 players will be enforced Your school team or group of friends (not connected to a school) are invited to take part in our league. Please note this league does not cater for individual players, only registration of teams are accepted. Cost is $ per team and entries are online. Teams that wish to enter have to be registered by 31 March Please get your registrations in early as it may be necessary to have a cut off point. We look forward to your involvement. Kind regards, Anina Botes Kidzplay Netball Co-ordinator anina@kidzplaynetball.co.nz 3

We will outline our program, rules and the Kidzplay Netball expectations of umpires. A free whistle will be available for each team umpire that attends the meeting. Please note it is compulsory for team umpires to attend this meeting. Coaches may also attend this meeting; it will help them to understand the rules and the expectations of umpires. Please umpires@kidzplaynetball.co.nz to advise attendance. Communication All teams must direct any questions directly to their School Co-ordinators, Coaches or Managers in the first instance. The School Co-ordinator, Coach or Manager shall be the only person to make communication with the Kidzplay Netball Co-ordinator on the school's behalf regarding any team changes or queries. All requests and complaints should be made by the School Co-ordinator, Coach or Manager and not by parents/team umpires/supporters. Draws and Notices All draws and related information can be found at Each week we do our best to get the draws out as quickly as possible and we appreciate your patience. If you cannot see the information on the website by Thursday 10.00am please contact us. Please note: We do not change draws once they are finalised and published. Don t forget to also Like our Kidzplay Netball Facebook page as this is a good place to receive reminders and information updates: Grading Grading will be run over the first two - four weeks of the league (this is dependent on the team numbers and combinations). To help us, please number your teams on the registration form if you have more than one in an age group to show the level within your school. After grading has finished all teams will be put into a section and a draw will be issued for the remainder of the term. Where possible we will not play semi-final and final games but this will be dependent on the number of teams in each section. Please note: We do not enter into discussion over grading decisions. 6

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Time Requests Time requests are accepted for specific netball reasons. That is to assist in handling coach/umpire/player conflicts. They are NOT for teams who wish to elect a preferred playing time for non netball reasons. No dispensation can be given for players involved in other sports or cultural activities. Umpiring and Scoring All teams must supply an umpire to control their game, unless advised to the contrary by Kidzplay Netball, or pay $7.00 per game to use a pool umpire. Please note: Kidzplay Netball will allocate neutral umpires for Year 5/6, Year 5 Grade A and Year 4 Grade A in the competition round. These are to be paid for by the team. Complaints regarding umpiring decisions shall not be accepted unless a Kidzplay Netball Official/Umpire Mentor has been called to the court during the game. Each team must supply one scorer, who will keep score together on the official scorecard provided. Please note: Failure of a team to supply a scorer means they must accept the score as presented by the opposing team on the official scorecard. Complaints regarding the official score will not be accepted. It is the team s responsibility to ensure that the correct score is recorded during the game on the official scorecard. Umpire Pool We do have a pool of umpires who we may be able to supply for your game if required. This can be a long standing arrangement or a one off request. If you require an umpire each week please mark this on the registration form. The Umpire fee of $7.00 per game is to be paid directly to the umpire, preferably before the game. N.B. Kidzplay Netball is unable to accept umpires fees with entry or registration fees. One-off requests need to be booked by the Tuesday prior to the game so that we can arrange to have someone available. If you cancel your umpire request you must let us know before 10am on the Wednesday prior to the game or the $7 will still be payable to the umpire (please hand into the control table). Umpire Mentors/Officials Kidzplay Netball provides Umpire Mentors who are at the courts to support ALL umpires. These ladies are experienced umpires who will be available to offer advice and encouragement and to answer any queries that arise from time to time. They are easily identified by their orange or white jackets. If advice is given to an umpire we ask this be accepted and acted upon in the intent it was expressed to improve the netball experience for our players. Please do not hesitate to ask them for assistance if you have any issues at all during your games. Always remember it is best for them to come and observe whilst the problem is happening as we cannot fix problems after the event. Umpire Jackets We ask all umpires to wear the umpire jackets supplied to make them easily identifiable to players and supporters alike. Umpires can pick these up and return to the control tables. All team Umpires are to wear the green jackets and the Kidzplay Netball Pool Umpires are to wear the white jackets. 7

IMPORTANT INFORMATION Scorecards Scorecards are picked up from the timing table closest to the game. Even though this is the responsibility of the umpire, we do ask each team to confirm the card has been uplifted prior to the commencement of the game. Please ensure that at the end of each game the score card is returned to the control table without it there will be no result recorded. N.B. Before the scorecard is returned to the control table at the end of the game, we ask all teams to please ensure that the score is recorded at the bottom of the card, both scorers have signed in the appropriate place and that the coaches have completed the back of the card. Please note: One person from each team shall stand together and ensure that the score is recorded on the scorecard. At the end of the game the scorecard must be signed by the scorer from each team and this is the only result that will be recognised by Kidzplay Netball. N.B. No disputes are accepted and cards cannot be changed after the game. No exceptions will be made. If you are experiencing problems please send for an Umpire Mentor to sort it out during the game. Parking Park safely and keep everyone safe. Please be careful where you choose to park. Auckland Transport can and do enforce parking restrictions on the roads around the venue. In particular we recommend not parking on cycle lanes or other restricted areas. Please note: There is no parking on the cycle lanes along Rosedale Road. Please park either on the southern side of Bush Road (commercial area) or in streets off Rosedale Road west off the lights at the junction with Bush Road. Lost Property Every year there is a considerable amount of lost property left around the courts. We collect this property and put it on display each week at the control tables. Anything not claimed or able to be identified by the end of the league will be given to charity. Wet Weather Policy We do not cancel any netball games due to the weather. If you should choose not to play then you have the right to default your game. Please advise this as soon as possible so that we can contact the other team. We can be contacted on Saturdays on If the Met Service have issued a Severe Weather Warning we will review the situation on Saturday morning and post a message on the Kidzplay Netball website and/or our Facebook page as close to 7.00am as possible. Players can wrap up warm with school jerseys or thermals. As long as the bibs are visible we are happy for extra layers to be worn. Safety NO dogs (other than guide dogs) are allowed on the school grounds. Please advise all supporters of this. All Pinehurst School buildings and grounds are Smoke Free. Smoking is forbidden in ALL areas. Bicycles, skates, skateboards, scooters or anything similar are not permitted in the court enclosure. Parents are responsible for young siblings at all times. Please ensure children do not climb over the tennis nets. Allow extra time to park safely. 8

BEHAVIOUR ON AND OFF THE COURT 2017 WINTER LEAGUE The objective of this netball league is to introduce the basic concept of netball to all players. Just as importantly we strive to provide enjoyable netball for the players, coaches, umpires and parents in a safe and friendly environment. Unacceptable behaviour will not be tolerated in any form as Kidzplay Netball has a Zero Tolerance Policy towards unacceptable behaviour at all its venues for all participating in our competition. This includes all players, teams, umpires, coaches, managers, volunteers, and spectators and any other persons participating in any activity held at the Kidzplay Netball facilities. All those involved are strongly encouraged to display and support fair play and sportsmanlike behaviour at all times. Acceptable Behaviour: Respect others at all times Be fair and honest at all times Encourage all players Respect the umpire s decision at all times Be safety conscious for yourself and others at all times Be responsible for your own actions Be an exemplary role model Encourage sportsmanship both on and off the court regardless whether your team win or lose Unacceptable Behaviour: Parent pressure on the sideline Intimidation towards players, officials, umpires or other parents Violence in any form Verbal abuse by any member or spectator towards any other member or spectator In sports, kids just want to have FUN. Please, for the sake of our children, relax, enjoy the game and support all children participating with positive feedback, praise and encouragement. Your support would be greatly appreciated. THE KIDZPLAY NETBALL AIM Kidzplay Netball is a modified netball league and our aim is: To encourage participation and skill development To promote enjoyable and challenging competition, discouraging the win at all cost attitude To promote principles of fair play Treat children as though they have already achieved their own greatness. Do it enough and they will actually be all that they dream of becoming. 9

GUIDELINES FOR COACHES AND TEAM UMPIRES Coaches Guidelines Players positions MUST be rotated each week as per the Kidzplay Netball rules. Positions must not be changed at half time. Players are continuing to develop both physically, technically and socially so it is important to give them the opportunity to play a wide range of positions on the court, regardless of their physical attributes. If you have boys in your team please ensure that they are spread through the court. Coaches must ensure teams are on the court and ready to start play when the bell commences play. If a team cannot field 5 registered players within 5 minutes of the commencement of the game the team will lose by default. For safety reasons, players are NOT allowed on court wearing earrings of any kind (including keepers), watches or any other jewellery. Taping of ears or bangles is NOT allowed. If players refuse to take their earrings out they will not be allowed on the court. No exceptions will be made. Medical Alert bracelets are allowed but need to be taped. Please note: Kidzplay Netball does not supply the tape for this Players fingernails must be short. Players must wear suitable footwear. Please ensure the scorecard has been picked up from the timing table prior to the game, and that it is signed and returned to the timing table at the end of the game. Teams are required to list their players on the back of the scorecards in their playing positions. One person from each team shall stand together and ensure that the score is recorded on the scorecard. No coaches or parents are allowed on the court during games. The playing area is for the players. Supporters are not allowed to stand at either goal/base lines, but are welcome along the court sideline. Supporters and coaches must respect umpires decisions (no spectator influence will be accepted). Coaches are to encourage fair play and good sportsmanship both on and off the court regardless whether they win or lose. Ensure that coaching is undertaken on practice days, not during the game on Saturday. Allow the players the space to learn to play netball without continual instructions. Do not try to play the game for the players. Be patient with all players as it does come together in a surprisingly quick time. Give only positive support to all. Be an exemplary role model. Encourage, encourage, encourage! Team Umpires Guidelines Before the start of each game please ensure to check for jewellery, that all players fingernails are short and that the scorecard has been picked up and the Odds & Evens are marked. At the end of the game, before the scorecard is returned to the control table, please ensure the final score is recorded at the bottom of the card, that both scorers have signed in the appropriate place and that the coaches have completed the back of the card. Make sure your whistle can be heard (blow loudly). Keep off the court. The playing area is for the players. Politely ask spectators to stay back from the sideline so you don t run into them. Refrain from coaching while umpiring. Be fair to both teams. Explain infringements in a helpful way. Please do not hesitate to ask one of our Umpire Mentors for assistance if you have any issues at all during your games. 11
