Years 3-5 netball

Welcome to Years 3-5 NETBALL HAYLEY MOFFITT NETBALL Please use this booklet to learn about how Netball operates at St Cuthbert s College. Enjoy the season! Information Presentation An Information Presentation for Years 3-5 netball parents will be held on Wednesday 12th February starting at 3.20pm in the Joan Holland Auditorium. We encourage all parents whose daughter will be involved in Netball in 2014 to attend. This presentation will outline the logistics of the netball programme, give parents the opportunity to meet our Development Coaches as well as become familiar with the Years 3-5 competition structure. Years 3-5 Future Ferns In Years 3-5 teams play a modified version of netball called Future Ferns sees a new structure for Year 3 - each week consists of a 15 minute skill session followed by a game of 4 x 8 minute quarters at the Auckland Netball Centre. Teams are 5-a-side with rolling subs. Players change positions throughout the game to ensure all get an equal opportunity. The positions are two attacks, two defence and one centre. This modified game is played across two thirds of a netball court. For Years 4 and 5 teams games are 2 x 20 minute halves, each half players rotate positions following a specific rotation system. Rotations are a key aspect to a player s development allowing knowledge and skill development in all positions. The coach will ensure all players are given equal opportunity in all positions. You can read detailed information about the Years 4-5 rotation policy and learn about each position on the netball page of the College website. The equipment used is modified to suit the players. Years 3 and 4 teams use a size 4 netball and the goals height is 2.6m. Year 5 teams play with a standard size ball (size 5) and hoop (3.05m). Netball Development Programme A Netball Development Programme is in place to ensure greater enjoyment for players in all age groups by providing equal opportunity for all to advance their skills. This programme fits in with the philosophies of the Sports Department; Increasing participation, Developing the player and Fostering elite success. Netball Development Coaches are in place and have the role of developing the player, the coach (student and adult) and the student umpire. The Development Coaches will regularly attend trainings and games of teams they are responsible for. They will deliver structured sessions that allow players and teams to progress leading to success on the courts.

Development Coach PROFILES LEE-ANNE CLARK HEAD DEVELOPMENT COACH LIZ VAN TIEL ASSISSTANT DEVELOPMENT COACH WHAT IS YOUR PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE? Club Premier Coach for 15 years both at North Harbour and Auckland. Premier School Coach at Baradene for six years and Coaching Coordinator for 12 years. Coach of various rep teams at North Harbour and Auckland for 15 years. High Performance Convenor at ANC for 12 years. Regional High Performance Manager for Auckland Waitakere for five years. Involved with Y7 to U19 Auckland Representative netball as a Manager of Assistant Coach for the past five years. Previously involved in the Auckland High Performance Academy. Development coach for ANC for their Netball in Schools programme for the past three years. Development Coach for ANC for their junior talent ID camps. Now concentrating energies on the rising stars at St Cuthbert s. WHAT POSITION DID YOU USED TO PLAY? Centre Always GA. Since coacing and learning all the exciting things that defenders can do, I wish I had also played defence. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR HIGHEST NETBALL ACHIEVEMENT EITHER PLAYING OR COACHING? Highest playing achievements were representing Manawatu, Canterbury and North Shore. Best coaching achievements were winning the U15, U17 and U21 National titles when taking representative teams. Highest achievement was being part of the coaching team that won back to back national titles for U15 Auckland Reps - very rewarding to be part of such a talented group of players. WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU BRING TO THE DEVELOPMENT COACHING TEAM AT ST CUTHBERT S COLLEGE? I bring a lot of experience and have a soft spot for youth development as I was involved in setting up the first Future Ferns competition run by ANC and developing their first Year 7 and Year 8 representative teams. To bring skill and passion for this great game to the girls at St Cuthbert s. To give them a wonderful sense of pride and achievement when they take to the court and realise how much they are improving. WHAT IS ONE FUN FACT ABOUT YOU? I like giving people nicknames so watch out! One thing the girls will remember about me the most - I talk a lot! Lee-Anne Clark oversees all Years 3-5 teams but will work mostly with Year 3 and Year 5. Liz van Tiel will be responsible for the Year 4 teams. Lee-Anne and Liz will be present at all trainings during the season. On game day the Development Coaches will rotate between teams. Parents are more than welcome to attend trainings to learn from our Development Coaches and assist when needed. The Development Coaches are always happy to be approached to discuss netball so please not do hesitate. Both Lee-Anne and Liz will be working closely with team coaches to appropriately plan and implement training sessions and to assist with game day procedures. Netball COMMUNICATION All netball communication from the Sports Department will be through The Week Ahead, College Connection, the netball page on the College website and via . Please check these places regularly to stay up to date. Your team manager and coach(es) will advise their own methods of communication.

Netball UMPIRING In Years 3 and 4 Auckland Netball Centre (ANC) grades it is expected that the coach of the team is also the umpire as these year levels play modified rules and the umpire acts more like a coach to best help players learn the rules as they play. ANC run courses for coaches to become familiar with the modified rules and become confident umpires. You can read detailed information about the modified rules on the Netball page of the Collegewebsite. Year 5 teams are exposed to the traditional netball rules and umpiring style. St Cuthbert s College has many competent student umpires that umpire these teams each week. We also welcome parents, family and friends who are able to umpire, to do so. If you would like to umpire in 2014 please contact Hayley Moffitt for further details. Information regarding Umpiring Theory Courses will be advertised through the communication channels. Student COACHES St Cuthbert s College supports our senior students to take up many leadership opportunities within the College. One of these is coaching a netball team. Students can complete their required service hours and develop many new life skills. Before a student coaching pair is assigned to a team, they are interviewed by the Netball Coordinator and must attend various coaching courses. The Student Coaches are supported by the Development Coaches who assist with planning and running of training sessions as well as being available on game day. The Development Coaches also ensure that Student Coaches are meeting performance criteria throughout the season. A team that has a great manager and supportive parents working with Student Coaches has proven to lead to a great season of netball.

Role of the TEAM COACH The team Coach is vital to the success of the St Cuthbert s College Netball Programme. The role of the coach is to ensure that the players and team have the appropriate skills and knowledge to take to the court and get the most out of the game by applying what they have been taught. A Coach is expected to: Plan and facilitate a weekly training session appropriate to the team s playing level. Attend weekly games, run the warm-up, plan playing positions and rotations. Umpire if required. Create a positive learning environment for the team. Utilise the support from the Development Coaches. Work closely with the Team Manager to communicate important information Attend Tournaments if required. Be organised, reliable, approachable and decisive. If you would like to coach a team in 2014 please contact Hayley Moffitt for further details. Role of the TEAM MANAGER A manager is part of a team that also comprises the coach, players and parents. The interaction between these members is vital. The most important skills of a Team Manager are communication and organisation. The manager will liaise with their teams coach(es) as to how they can help them manage the team this season. Tasks may include: Communicating game and training times to players and their parents. Following up on absences. Arranging car-pooling/transport. Scoring on game day/picking up and returning the score card and team card. Half-time snacks/refreshments. Go to person for nail clippers/hair ties etc. Assist player to first aid room if required. Support for players and coach. Attend tournaments if required. Manager team equipment during the season. Organise end of season team function. Completing an annual report/survey. If you would like to manager a team in 2014 please contact Hayley Moffitt for further details.

REGISTRATIONS 2014 The Sports Department is introducing a new electronic process for students to enrol in sport in Junior School families will click on a link to the enrolment form which will be on the Ultranet and parents are to complete. This will also be the parent s opportunity to make themselves aware of the terms and conditions for enrolment, and submitting confirmation will replace the signed permission slip. Enrolment for winter codes will open on February 10th at the Sports Fair. Enrolments will remain open until the listed closing date. Students or parents are welcome to contact the Sports Office if you experience any difficulty with this process or would like further information. TRIALS 2014 Please see attached documents on the Netball page of the College website for further details regarding Years 3-5 trial dates, the Trial Policies and Procedures as well as the St Cuthbert s College Netball Player Competencies. Team NUMBERS Where possible each team will have ten players assigned to it once teams are formed after trials. This is to ensure teams will have at least seven players each week of the season. Having ten players per team allows for injuries/sickness during the season. Year 3 team play 5 aside so will have eight players per team. Additional PROGRAMMES In addition to the regular netball playing season in Terms 2 and 3 St Cuthbert s College offers netball programmes in Terms 1 and 4 to allow our players to continue their development. A preseason programme is held in Term 1 to get players back into netball prior to trials. In the July holidays a Netball Holiday Programme will be held for any interested netballers. In Term 4 an off season programme will be run. All additional programmes have their own fees and are user pays. Please see attached documents on the netball page of the College website for further programme details. FEES The fee for netball in 2014 for Years 3-5 teams is $150. This fee covers entry to the ANC Competition, equipment, coaching costs (Development Coaches) and umpire costs. A non-refundable netball trial fee of $30 will be charged to all players that attend trials and/or are placed in a team in Term 1 this fee will be included as part of the total netball fee for the season. If your daughter is involved in any other netball events or programmes such as one day tournaments or preseason training there may be additional fees that apply. All fees will be charged to your St Cuthbert s College account.

Years 3-5 TRAINING DAYS Year 3 will train on Monday at lunchtime(y3 netball girls will be released from class at 12.45pm). Years 4-5 will train on Tuesday at lunchtime from 1.00pm pm. Behaviour and ATTENDANCE To ensure everyone involved in a team gets the most out of the season it is essential that players attend all trainings and games. Where possible please plan around the season dates outlined to ensure your daughter s availability. The Coach and Manager must be notified if a player is unable to attend a training or game to allow them to plan ahead. If too many players are away trainings may be cancelled and games defaulted. Players and teams will learn the most at training if all are present and drills can be effectively carried out. It is essential that players also arrive at the time specified by the Coach. The behaviour that is expected at trainings is the same as that required in a classroom. Netball training is for learning and all players need to respect not only the coach but also the other team members that are keen to listen and progress their skills. Please discuss these values with your daughter prior to attending Netball training each week. Please read the Fair Play Agreement for Players and Parents which is available on the Netball page of the College website. At the completion of Round 1 a 5 week Round 2 draw will be issued. Each week you can find the draw on the school Sports Draw found on the St Cuthbert s College Website under Parents/Sports/Sports Draw and on the College App. An will also be sent to Team Managers each week outlining the game times, this will then be passed to you. UNIFORM Uniforms are to be purchased before the competition starts from Black Watch House. As the team is representing St Cuthbert s College, it is imperative that they are wearing their correct uniform at all times. Girls should be wearing the netball top and skirt. Black netball undies must be worn and should not be seen as longer than the skirt. Players are not permitted to wear any jewellery. A medical bracelet can be worn but must be completely taped to the body. Sports teams are expected to wear any of the following College Sportswear over the top of their playing uniform to protect from the elements. Green tracksuit Blue hoodie Black wet weather sports jacket Blue polar fleece For extra warmth Years 3-5 players are able to wear navy or black thermal top and pants underneath their netball uniform. Any other gear (eg puffa jackets, non-regulation polar fleeces) are not appropriate for school sports teams and we respectfully request that players do not come dressed in such items. EQUIPMENT At the beginning of the season each team will be issued with the appropriate equipment they require. Your coach will have been given 2 netballs, 1 set of training bibs, 1 set of game day bibs and a first aid kit. Should this equipment not be returned at the conclusion of the season the team will share the cost of purchasing the lost equipment.

St Cuthbert s College FILL IN PLAYER POLICY When a team does not have enough players to take the court they may borrow players from another team to make up numbers. The following policy applies: Players may only be borrowed from the team that is graded immediately below them in the ANC competition. This ensures the borrowed player is capable of the level of play in the team above. As many players as needed may be borrowed at once. Players must be in the same year level as the team they are filling in for. If the game of the two teams involved are at different times the manager can request a certain player/position. If the game of the two teams involved are at the same time the team below can select which player is provided, e.g a player that is planned to be a sub in the first half. This therefore does not affect the team below with regards to rotations or starting lineups. Team managers should liaise with their coach(es) to discuss the planned positions for that game and what player/position is needed or can be given. The manager of the team requiring an extra player should contact the manager from the team below. Permission must then be gained from the requested players parents and they need to be advised of meeting time/location and pick up time. On the occasion that using a player from the team below leaves that team short that team must then borrow from the team below them utilising the same policy. Once the fill in player has been arranged the team manager of the higher team should inform the Netball Coordinator of the situation. A player may only play in the team above them twice. Years 3-5 TOURNAMENTS There are two tournaments that Years 3-5 netballers are able to participate in during the season: ANC Years 3-5 Mid Winter Tournament. Remuera Zone Day. The ANC Years 3-5 Mid Winter Tournament will be held on Saturday 12 July (in the school holidays). This tournament is optional for teams to enter and provides the opportunity for players to gain further netball experience by participating in a one day tournament. Entry information is passed on to Team Managers who will then determine the availability of their teams players. If a team does not have sufficient players to attend, other available players will be pulled into the team or teams will be merged. All players that are keen to attend will be catered for. A coach and manager must be present on the day of the tournament. The Remuera Zone Day is held on Tuesday 16 September. Only Years 5-6 teams are able to enter this tournament. An information letter will be sent home to parents outlining the day. As the netball and hockey Remuera Zone competitions are on the same day, players will need to decide which sport they would like to be part of. Players may also decide to remain at College for the day. All players that choose netball will be placed in a team. Each school is allowed to enter only three teams (one in each grade - A, B and C) meaning that team numbers on the day may be large, depending on player availability. Teams for the day will be based on the trialled teams formed for the season with all selection decisions being made by the Development Coaches. A charter bus will be provided to transport students to and from ANC.

CANCELLATIONS Netball will only be cancelled for thunder and lightning. Following a decision by ANC Officials responsible for the competition, cancellations will be advertised as follows: DEFAULTS If your team has to default their scheduled game for any given week, this must be communicated to the Sports Coordinator ASAP. a) ANC cancellation phone line. b) Newstalk ZB cancellation service. c) ANC website FIRST AID At the Auckland Netball Centre St Johns will be on site for all game days. They can be located next to the reception in the main building. For minor issues please use the first aid kit provided in the gear bag. End of Season PRIZE GIVING At the completion of the Netball season there are a few prizegivings held to celebrate our teams and individuals. The first is the ANC Prizegiving at which teams who have won their grade or were placed runner up are invited to attend. This prizegiving is usually held on the same night of competition the week after the final game. Teams need to attend dressed in their formal St Cuthbert s College uniform. Next we have a St Cuthbert s Netball prizegiving held at the College in the last few weeks of Term 3. At this ceremony a Most Valuable Player and Emerging Player is awarded per team, along with congratulating our winning teams and thanking all involved over the season. In the last week of each term a Junior School Sports Assembly is held to award any teams/ individuals who have achieved success in that term. Teams who have placed in a tournament or their ANC grade will be acknowledged here.
