1 SPORTS NEWSLETTER AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL 2017 The sporting highlights of Term 3 were the AFL promotion, Reception - Year 7 Sports Day and Reception - Year 2 tennis clinics. The term started with a very popular Adelaide Crows visit to Magill School. Everyone was very excited to see Charlie Cameron along with Jonathon Beech and Ben Davis. Students had a chance to kick the footy, have some AFL challenges and take photos with the Crows players. Players and Danijel Herbut from SANFL Junior Development encouraged Magill students, boys and girls, to join the school teams and play AFL. Thanks for coming along, it was a great afternoon! TERM 3 THERE IS NO AFTER HOURS SPORT DURING THE HOLIDAY PERIOD The tennis clinics offered by Super Tennis Hot Shots were enjoyed by Reception - Year 2 students. They practised skills and played games. For many students the clinics were a good chance to be introduced to a new sport. Reception - Year 7 Sports Day on Friday the 22th of September was the main event in Term 3. Students participated and enjoyed group games and buddy class activities, challenging themselves in different races. 2 SOCCER 11 YEAR DIVISION COACH: PAUL JONES This year was a tough year for the team. We started the year with high expectations as the teams skill level had improved. Games never seemed to go our way, we would be in the match until the very end on so many occasions only to lose concentration at the end. All the players gave 100%. It was a pleasure to support the team in their growth of the game. SOCCER 9 YEAR DIVISION COACH: DANIEL ELDIC AND CAMERON PECK The Magill Gold team has built on their confidence as well as ability and have played cohesively all season. Daniel had to hand over the coaching reins half way through and the team adapted to Cameron s coaching methods with enthusiasm, determination and diligence. The season ended on a high with a 4-0 win meaning the overall season had 7 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses. This team has played together for 2 seasons and all have shown interest in playing again next season. Fantastic sports ethic has been shown by all players and they should be very proud of their achievements Well done, Magill Gold.

3 AFL DIVISION YEAR 2 AND 3 COACHES: MIKE ADLER AND SAM ENGLAND Term 3 saw our 6/7 footy team continue with the fantastic work they had started the previous term. At the midway point of the term we had the honour to accept an invite extended to our side by Sturt and the Adelaide Crows football clubs, requesting Magill come play as representatives of the Sturt zone in the AFCs Next Gen' Academy state carnival to be held at AAMI stadium. The format of the carnival was a 9-12 per side Round Robin competition in which we came up against some of the best schools who could offer up a team rich in diverse multicultural backgrounds similar to our own. The four other teams lucky enough to be selected were representatives of the Glenelg, Central district, North Adelaide and Sturt recruitment zones. We were lucky enough to receive a tour of the AFCs training facilities whilst down at AAMI and also got to meet and chat with some Crows players including AFCW co-captain Chelsea Randall and Cam Ellis-Yolman. Our boys were extremely competitive in all four of our games. We are very proud of the way they represented our School, both on and off the field. Having done such a great job, Sturt F.C have now invited us to don the Sturt colours in this years SANFL Preliminary finals half time mini-league which is a very exciting opportunity for the players to show their stuff on one of the greatest football grounds in the country. It has been my great pleasure to watch the team grow over the course of the season, not only as individuals but also into one of the stronger teams in our competition and I look forward to seeing the year 6 players keep up the standard next year. 4 NETBALL SUB JUNIOR 2 COACH: ANGELINE CARDONE It was wonderful to see the girls (from 2 different teams last season) support each other and develop a strong camaraderie. The team's enthusiasm and willingness to learn new drills helped to improve their on-court movement, ball skills and work ethic. I salute their perseverance and persistence as they had to cope with the extreme physicality, intensity and pace of Sub Junior 2. As a result of their hard work, the team reached the preliminary finals. More importantly, I am most proud of how the team has displayed great sportsmanship and fair play in every game... Angeline. PHOTORAPH ABOVE SUB JUNIOR 2 & 6 NETBALL SUB JUNIOR 6 COACH: JACQUI BLACKEBY This was a newly formed team, combining year 6 and year 7 girls. A number of the girls were experienced players and we had 3 girls that were new to netball. The team worked cohesively together but unfortunately we didn t win a lot of games. To the credit of the girls they never gave up and we had lots of fun during training sessions... To Lilly, Bethany and Bhavi, we wish you well and to the other girls we look forward to a successful summer season... Jacqui

5 NETBALL SUB JUNIOR 8 COACH: MEREDITH ORTH Winter season has gone well. It is our first time in Sub Juniors and we are on top of the ladder in our division. The girls have been improving and the team has become stronger. We look forward to the grand final and hope to take home first place. Meredith NETBALL SUB JUNIOR 3 COACH: JACQUI BLACKEBY Most of this team has been together since grade 3 and to their credit they have been placed in a very high division. At the beginning of the season they lost a number of their games but have brought it home with numerous wins. At this stage the girls have developed strengths and have a position that they prefer on court. I will rotate the girls but with a good combination of centre players (on ballers, runners), defenders and shooters they stick to one or two positions. They are formidable to any opposition and I can t wait to see what they can do in future seasons. A big thank you to a great bunch of supportive parents... Jacqui

6 NETBALL PRIMARY 9 COACH: NATASHA PILLAY This team is a group of enthusiastic, fun-loving girls. They play to the best of their ability and love netball. They have a strong team spirit and always display great sportsmanship. They have had a good season, winning almost all their matches. A great big thank you to Lauren and Phoebe who have coached the team for us. The support from parents has also been tremendous and I would like to say thank you to them for their patience with me and for their loyal support of the team. I look forward to the summer season with this team... Natasha NETBALL PRIMARY 11 COACH: OLIVIA HARKER All throughout the season this team has always tried their best and never given up. They have improved so much since the beginning of the season and this really showed in the games because the scores were getting much closer and the games were becoming more exciting. Also, a big thankyou to all the parents who scored, brought oranges and just generally helped out... Olivia

7 NETBALL NETTA 6 COACH: CLAIRE JONES The girls have had a great season which is a credit to all their hard work at training every week. We started the season with half the team having never played before and finished the season having won more than half our games which was fantastic... Claire MAGILL YEAR 4-7 HOCKEY COACH - VANESSA CUI Our Magill Hockey team has returned from the holiday break with some good form on Friday nights. With some extra help from our new fill in s, Sam and Ebony the team secured a great win against Scotch College, followed by a very competitive game against Pulteney. The whole teams skill level and understanding of the game is improving every week which is pleasing to see. With only one week being cancelled due to poor weather the games have been played in fine conditions in the South Parklands.

9 SAPSASA YEAR 6/7 BOYS BASKETBALL COACH: MIKE SHORT I would like to thank the Year 6/7 Boys Basketball team for their enthusiasm and commitment to their recent SAPSASA tournament, held at Wayville Sports Stadium. The boys trained hard for several weeks, including many freezing cold mornings before the first school bell. They showed fantastic growth over this time, as well as an admirable willingness to listen, learn, improve, and bond with their team mates. Their behaviour at the day of the event should be commended. They stuck together all tournament, through the good times and the challenges, and were great at offering each other support and encouragement. They were a very selfless group who never put any individual agendas above the objective of the team, which takes a high level of maturity in a primary school sporting competition. They played hard to achieve a final placing of third and should be proud of their efforts, both on and off the court. Thanks boys: Vasily, Abiram, Arun, Youwon, Thomas C, Ben, Thomas M, Nayaka, Riley fantastic work. SAPSASA YEAR 4/5 BOYS BASKETBALL COACH: MIKE SHORT On Monday 7th August Magill School s 4/5 Boys Basketball team competed in the Year 4/5 BSA Challenge at Wayville along with 13 other schools. The boys played 5 x 16 minute games winning three, drawing one and losing one. This result placed us in the final game of the day to play off for 3rd and 4th position against the only team that had beaten us Brighton. The final was a close game which was won by Brighton by 1 point which was a big improvement from the earlier game where they beat us by 14 points.

11 SAPSASA BASKETBALL The 6/7 girls team competed at Wayville Basketball Stadium on 10th August. The team were highly competitive winning two games, drawing one game, and loosing two games. The two games we lost were very close matches only losing by less than 3 points. Well done to the team for their excellent effort, solid commitment and outstanding attitude. Thanks to the parents and Kat who supported and assisted the team on the day. Also the coach was awesome too.
