4th Edition Newsletter DUTCH SCHOOL VISIT BLATCH RIJNLANDS LYCEUM SCHOOL VISIT BLATCH FOR A SPORT RELIEF DAY AND HELPED US TO RAISE HEADLINES PE Round Up Sport Relief Dutch Day BMS Netball Hits All Time High Year 9 Netballers win their Tournament and all matches this year Yr 9 Football Make 2 Cup Finals FOR #TEAMBLATCH SCORES AND UPDATES
Head of PE September to April Round Up... A very busy and successful 2 terms of sport at Blatch and it has been a huge pleasure and a privilege to work with so many committed students and to see the hard work and effort of the students paying off. The amount of students participating in school sport has been fantastic, but we still want to see more of you coming along and giving different sports a go. It has been great that rugby has grown again after the disappointing English World Cup, but superb games played at the Amex, and then the 6 Nations and Grand Slam has had a positive impact. Hockey has started to grow and with continued links to Brighton and Hove Hockey Club I expect this to grow even more over the next few years. We will continue hockey in the summer so hopefully some of you footballers and rugby players will give it a go. Netball has been the headline sport for Blatch so far this year and the Netball report makes for outstanding reading. Great successes across all age groups. Stand out team is still yet to be decided although with Football Cup Finals coming up the Year 9 Boys are pushing hard to get this. See the report inside for more information. The indoor cricket season has come to a close with the U15 Boys team making the Finals Day at the County Ground. Thanks To Monica Richards and Leilani Mason for being part of the team. U14 girls football has been fantastic this season and we are waiting to hear if we have won the league or not. The Young Leaders, Sports Leaders and Sports Ambassadors have been extremely busy the last 2 terms. The work they do within school and across the city is exceptional and a credit to the school. These students give up a lot of their own time to provide other students at Blatch and in Brighton and Hove with opportunities to compete and experience new sports. Thank you for all your hard work and continued support to the PE department.
Head of PE September to April Round Up Continued... Massive congratulations must go to Max Pilbeam and Sam Conway for qualifying for the National Schools Trampolining Finals. I look forward to hearing how you get on. It would be great to hear more about other sporting achievements of our students competing outside of Blatch. Please let us know of any achievements by ing them to pe@blatchingtonmill.org.uk so we can recognise the achievement and congratulate the students. Please have a look at when clubs are taking place after Easter to ensure you can get yourself involved in something. I must thank all the captains for their work in supporting the PE department in making sure their teams are aware and ready for training and fixtures. We will be appointing summer captains after Easter. I must also thank the rest of the PE staff and other colleagues who support the PE department for running all these different clubs and giving the students these excellent experiences. I know how hard you all work, but these extra bits go a long way with the students. A special thank you must go to Mr Whittington for all the added extra he does for the department. The superb recognition we get for our Sports Leaders and Ambassadors from across the city is down to your hard work and dedication, Sport Relief was bigger and raised more this year and Dutch Day was another new thing but again a huge success. These things would not run so expertly without your help in the organisation. I hope students and staff have a well earned rest and Happy Easter!! Mr P Mowforth
PE Support Sport Relief On Friday 18th March Blatch held the annual sport relief charity event. With a day packed full of fun for Year 7 s. The Year 7 s took part in multiple activities including a obstacle course, beat the goalie, tug of war, and hockey. They did this by donating just 1 and in return got a wristband and missed lessons to take part in a fun day of activities. On top of this, students were allowed to wear their own clothes during PE lessons in exchange for the donation of another pound and as a result the PE department managed to raise a whopping Tug of war. Undeniably the crowds favourite when it comes to year 7 s. A show of strength and determination was shown by all in order to raise money for sport relief. With mild rope burns everyone carried on taking part in all events and even asking for second go. From there students went on to tackle the obstacle course.
Sport Relief Continued... The obstacle course is the main event with a mixture of different level ability obstacles so there s something for everyone and lots of fun was had by not only the year 7 s but also the year 9 Sports Leaders, who had their own competition using the obstacle course. These leaders kindly took time out of lessons to help set up and run the charity day. The PE department hope to do more in the near future to support charities through sport to donate money for those in need here and in places of poverty and need. On top of this beat the goalie was played and enjoyed by the students and lollypops were rewarded as prizes for those who did the best. There were Year 7 s and 9 s in goal and the Blatchington Mill community was clearly displayed throughout the day as students and teachers worked together to earn as much money as possible towards Sport Relief. Bands and noses were available for a pound and many of the students were keen to get involved with donating. The amount of support the PE department received was phenomenal and they would like to personally thank everyone who donated. All money went to Sport Relief and they will be repeating the event next year in aim to beat the amount raised this year. Report by Sports Ambassador Kira Tarbutt
Dutch Day for Sport Relief RIJNLANDS LYCEUM SCHOOL On Wednesday 16th March Year 9s from Dutch School Rijnlands Lyceum visited Blatch for a day of PE and Sports matches with and against our Year 9s. The visit coincided with our Sport Relief fundraising week so the Blatch students that took part each donated 2 to Sport Relief. Their donations were added to the year 7s which helped the PE Department raise over 600. The day started with mixed, Dutch & English PE lessons taken by Blatch PE staff and Mr Seltzer. The sports were Football, Rugby, Basketball, Hockey and Netball. In the afternoon we played some England v Holland matches in all the sports with England coming out on top in all the games except the Hockey (their National Sport), but of course it s the taking part, not the winning that counts. All the students & staff had a great day!!

The year 7 boys (shown to the right) had a good start to their Blatch football, they came 2nd in the league and now play in the League Cup final play off against Stringer on Wednesday 13th April at Hove Park, 2pm kick off. The year 8s finished mid table and a had respectable season. They only lost two game s and they also managed to win one game. The year 9s came fifth on goal difference, only losing two games, but their concentration has been on their very successful cup campaigns, see overleaf. This season was difficult for our year 10 s, due to achieving promotion last year. They have avoided relegation as there is only one division when playing in year 11! The year 11s had a good season, it was a decent last season they came fourth this season.
YEAR 9 BOYS FOOTBALL Since returning unbeaten from the successful Holland Tour at the end of last year the Year 9 boys football team have had an amazing season which will culminate in two Cup Finals both against Hove Park. 11 BLATCH NETBALL ON A HIGH Here is how our teams have done this year! NETBALL Year 7 The year 7 A team won 3 games, drew 1 and lost 3 in their league.the B team competed in the same league unfortunately although they played well they didn't win a game. We are awaiting the final league positions from the competition organisers. Year 8 The year 8 A team won 2 games, didn't draw any and lost 3 games. The B team competed in the same league won 4 and lost 1 and played very well. Year 9 The year 9 A team played exceptionally well and won all of their games. This means they are Champions!! Well done! Year 10 The year 10 A team also played very well and won 3 games but unfortunately lost 1 of their games but overall played fantastically. We await to see if they have won their league. Year 11 The year 11 team won 5 games, drew 1 and lost 2 games and the overall result was very good. Tournaments Year 8 Netball A team, the Year 9 team and the Year 10 team all won their Brighton and Hove City Wide tournaments. The Year 8 B team did exceptionally well and came 3rd as did the year 11 team. The year 7 tournament takes place after Easter. Lets hope for a 4th straight win! The Year 8 Team
RUGBY BLATCH RUGBY ENDS FOR ANOTHER YEAR Here is how our teams have done this year! Year 7 The year 7 team have been superb this season, with many players having never played rugby before. The squad is growing and more players are always welcome. They have played several games this season losing just one and winning the tag rugby festival at the start of the year. Watch this space as this team develops throughout the summer as there are big things to come from this group of boys. Year 8 A new team put together this year which is starting to flourish. New boys are joining the squad all the time and as long as everyone upholds the core values of rugby across the school they get to play. Again, like the year 7s, many players have never played before this season and it will be interesting to see which team goes further out of the year 7 and year 8s as both have huge potential. Year 9 A developing team that has stuck together since year 7. new players have joined this year and made a good account of themselves. A mixed bag of results but most of all an enjoyable season even in the worst conditions! Year 10 and 11 Rugby has taken a back seat with players this season unfortunately making it difficult to get teams out. The year 11s (aided by a few year 10s) got through to the semi finals of the Brighton Cup but lost to Stringer in a close fought game. A game they could have won with more training. A great team to coach and I hope to see more of them playing club rugby as they leave Blatch.
