1 Sports Bulletin 23 August 23 August Sports Bulletin Sport Report and Key Dates K-2 Athletics Carnival Well done to all of our K-2 students who competed in their Athletics Carnival last Friday. In some testing windy conditions our students did not miss a beat as they ran, threw, jumped and had fun participating in a tabloid style athletics carnival. Special thanks to our Year 9 and 10 PASS students who ran the activities and ensured that our K-2 students were always happy Sports Tour to Canada and North America Only a small number of families have expressed interest for our sports tour in 2018, we would like to announce that Volleyball is now one of our sports being offered for the tour. The tour will take place in the September/October school holidays in The destination of the tour will be to North America, which will include visits to Vancouver and New York. Expressions of interest are now open to all students who in 2018 will be in Year Sports being offered on the tour will include boys and girls football, girls netball, boys and girls rugby 7 s, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls volleyball. To express initial interest please sport@hillsgrammar.nsw.edu.au with the following details student name, sport and year group. This tour will be accompanied by other Hills Grammar students embarking on an academic tour. 2 Summer Sports This week is the last opportunity for students to sign up for a summer sport. Our core summer sports are basketball, touch football and cricket. Please see details below about each sport. To express your interest in either of these sports please sport@hillsgrammar.nsw.edu.au Basketball Expressions of interest are now being taken for all students interested in playing basketball for the upcoming 2017/18 summer season. Age groups start from U10 s for boys and girls and extend right through to U22 s for our senior students. Competition is held at Fred Caterson Basketball Stadium at Castle Hill. Game days and times can vary from Monday to Friday nights and Saturday mornings. All matches are in the afternoon and can extend into the evening for our older teams. Saturday games are mid-morning through to lunchtime. To register your interest please sport@hillsgrammar.nsw.edu.au with your child s name and age they are turning this year Key Basketball Dates August Expressions of interest open to all students August 30 Expressions of interest closed and age groups finalised September 6, 13, 20 Pre season training and grading begins for all age groups from 3.30pm to 5.00pm September 28 Basketball Holiday Clinic 10-12pm October 9-14 season commences. Once the regular season starts, teams will be allocated training times, please note this may vary from after school, before school or some lunchtimes. The competition starts at the end of Term 3 and runs through to the end of November. Below are the details of competition days. In preparation for the season all interested students are invited to attend touch football training every Wednesday starting from August 16 at lunchtime on the school oval. Please note this is available for all students from Year 1. The summer season is only three weeks away, with the junior cricket competition starting 9 September. The club offers teams from Under 8s and games are played locally on Saturday mornings. Training is held on the Oval after school on weekdays. For students who are interested in playing for the School Club, please an expression of interest to sport@hillsgrammar.nsw.edu.au. After expressions of interest have been taken and teams finalised an will be sent to parents explaining the registration process and final cost for the season. T20 Gala Day - Tuesday 29 August Hills Grammar in conjunction with Cricket NSW will be hosting a T20 Gala Day for all students from Year 2 4 on Tuesday 29 August. Students will be exposed to the skills and fun of playing modified games of cricket on the school oval. 4 Netball Report: - Round 14 Round 14 did not start the way we had planned. Our Under 8s team had to forfeit their game on Friday night due to illness. This meant the girls missed their last game of netball for Under 10s At 8am on a very cold Saturday morning the Under 10s arrived for warm ups. The wind was not kind today but the girls put in a fighting effort for their last game of the season. The game was close all the way but in the last quarter, St. Agatha s put their foot down and come off with the win All ten of these girls have improved dramatically over the 2017 season and I cannot wait to see them back next year. Under 12s The Under 12s held up a strong St Patricks side on Saturday. The girls showed great sportsmanship and teamwork down the court and showed St Patricks what they were made of. In the end, St Patricks walked away with the win The Under 12s have trained hard this season and it has definitely shown in their games. Under 13 3s The Under 13 3s played a fired up Beecroft on Saturday. The girls were missing three of their key players on Saturday but this did not show on the court. A big thank you to Emily Farrell and Leela Enahoro who played an extra game to help give the 13 3s another win. The 13 3s have gone through the 2017 season undefeated and are hot favourites to take out the Grand Final. Under 13 4s The 13 4s finished off the season with a great win on Saturday against Thornleigh. The girls showed great teamwork and encouragement towards each other on Saturday. Kyna Diancin and Victoria Marull have done a great job coaching them this season and really developed the playing skill of each girl. The girls won Under 14 3s The Under 14 3s got off to a flying start on Saturday really giving second place West Pennant Hills a run for their money. The dynamic shooting duo of Renae Muscat and Emma Graham showed great athleticism and shooting accuracy during the first half of the game. During the second half West Pennant Hills really stepped up and showed us why they were in second place. Unfortunately, our girls could not repeat their performance in the second half but never gave up fighting. West Pennant Hills won s The 15 3s had a tough game against third place Galston. The girls were missing their GS Courtney Davis on Saturday, which upset the flow of the game. Victoria Marull stepped up and played GS, which left their mid court without their usual Centre.Megan Johnson always, does a great job in GA, she worked really well with Victoria even though they usually do not shoot together. Emma Romeo from the Under 13 3s played a full game in centre and showed great talent and skill. The formidable duo of Maya Enahoro and Jess Flynn do an outstanding job in defensive and are always up for a challenge. Elissa Karetsian always impresses me in WD and shows great determination to create turnover ball. Unfortunately, Galston won 53-27, which meant our 15s were out of finals contention. Cadet 1s BYE Cadet 2s The Cadet 2s were also missing their usual shooting duo of Lauren Farrell and Kathryn Solomou. Megan Johnson (15 3s) and Lucy Coote worked hard in the shooting circle against a very strong Beecroft defence. 5 The Cadet 5s had a great win over second place Thornleigh on Saturday. This was a great confidence boost for the girls leading into the finals series. The cadet 5s are sitting in 4th place and will play MSB in the semi-final this Saturday. Presentation Night will be on Monday 18th of September at 6:30pm. 6 Football Report It was a glorious day for the final round of the 2017 football competition. School Principal Michael Smith was a welcome visitor to the oval to watch a number of our junior mini roos teams play their last game of the season. All of our Under 7 teams enjoyed close competitive games with their opposition from Rouse Hill Rangers, Norwest and Hills Pumas. Our Under 8 Sharks finished with a good 2-1 victory over Hills Knights whilst the Under 8 Rabbits went down to the top of the table Castle Hill United A. The Under 9s fought hard but went down to Castle Hill United, but still managed to have a few players back up and help out a depleted Under 10 side do battle with a very strong Winston Hills team. The Under 11s looked to be continuing on from last week s excellent result by putting up an excellent first half display before being overrun by Castle Hill United in the second half. T3 Training And Summer Program A reminder that T3 training will continue for a further two weeks, finishing on Thursday 31 August. We have arranged for T3 to conduct a summer program for 9 weeks during Term 4. The T3 program will be on Wednesday afternoons on the Oval commencing Wednesday October 18. The cost of the program is $ The program will focus on building technique in young players of all abilities in a fun and energetic environment. The Term 4 program is open to all Hills Grammar Junior School students that are interested in improving their skills or trying football for the first time. A flyer will be sent home with all Junior School students this week. 7 Primary Sport Football Last week our senior football teams had a reality check, with both boys and girls teams losing to Pacific Hills 2-1. However, a loss is good for both teams as long as they learn from their mistakes. Both teams have been playing excellent football and we look forward to next week s results. Year 3 Team Results Hills Grammar vs William Clarke 1-1 Hills Grammar vs Arden 1-0 Year 4 Gala day On Thursday 17 August, all Year 4 students participated in the HZSA Gala Day at Hills Centenary Park, Kellyville. Hills Grammar teams competed against other local schools in volleyball, cricket, AFL and football. 8 Hills Grammar Tennis Club Secondary Schools Tennis Challenge Congratulations to James Martin (Year 8) and Michael Harper (Year 8) who have once again done the Hills Grammar Tennis Club proud by winning their Division at the North West Secondary Schools Tennis Challenge on Saturday 19 August. On the path to victory, James and Michael defeated teams from Barker College, Normanhurst Boys, Loreto and Carlingford. They played outstanding tennis, well done boys! Primary Schools Tennis Challenge Year 6 students, Rory Wilson and Zarshan Jayawardena represented Hills Grammar in the Primary Schools Tennis Challenge earlier this month This was the first time Rory and Zarshan had played doubles together and they were placed in a high division but held their own and played well together on the night. Congratulations to Zarshan who was competing in his first tennis tournament Social Tennis with Mr Ishida Mr Ishida is now offering social tennis to students in Years 9-12 on Tuesday mornings at Kenthurst Tennis Centre from 7.00am-8.30am. Students need to have some tennis experience and be able to serve and return balls with the goal of playing a doubles match each week. 9 Equestrian News Jessica Callus represented Hills Grammar at the 24th Annual Arndell Anglican College Interschool Equestrian Carnival on Saturday 19 August. Jessica and her pony, Yartarla Park Chipmonk, competed in five classes and were awarded: 1st in Best Presented; 1st in Handler; 1st in her Rider Class; 2nd in Open Show Hunter Pony and 5th in Active Rider.
