1 Geelong and District AFCA April Newsletter Welcome to the very first edition of the Geelong & District Coaches Association e-newsletter for 2014, and we hope that you find this format useful for your coaching purposes! The 2013 Regional Coach of the Year Dinner recognised the work of some of our outstanding coaches in and around the region. Please find results and photos from the night. However, it was unfortunate that there were no nominations in the Female categories (Junior and Senior Coach of the Year) even though we know that the game is expanding to cater for women and girls of all ages! Please make sure that throughout the 2014 football season you keep in mind ALL of the coaches involved with your Club (of all varying levels of development) are nominated when it comes time to do so at the end of the year. The G&DCA committee would formally like to congratulate Ron Watt for his appointment as the AFL Coaches Association s new Manager of Professional Development. Ron had previously been the Player Development Manager with the Geelong FC for the past 15 years. This is a fantastic achievement for Ron in his professional career and we wish him all the best in this new role. Ron will still have involvements with the Geelong FC acting in a transitional role, as well as continuing in his Coaching Coordinator s role at the North Shore Football Club. Let s hope he is still available to host our G&DCA Dinner for 2014! The Youth and Senior Coaching Courses ran throughout March, with the two courses being separated for the first time in the Region. The Youth Level One Coaching Course was held at the Geelong Grammar School with a total of 41 attendees whilst the Senior Level One Coaching Course was held at the Grovedale College for the very first time. Thank you to all of the coaches who attended these courses and for the Clubs that support their attendance in acquiring accreditation. The Junior/Auskick Level One Coaching Course will be conducted at Buckley s on Sunday the 18 th of May, with registrations now being taken at On Tuesday the 27 th of May, there will be a Coaches Forum at the Deakin Community Centre (Simonds Stadium) featuring Geelong FC Assistant Coaches Nigel Lappin and Paul Hood. Please schedule this date into your diaries with more details to follow in the coming weeks. A successful V/Line Cup Carnival for our Geelong Falcons U/15 teams and Youth Girls team were held recently in April. The Division 1 U/15 team won the Final Game over the Peninsula Stingrays to win their Division by a point, and the Youth Girls team had the same result over the Gippsland Youth Girls with their first and only goal coming in the final minute of play! Well done to all involved with special mentions to our coaching staff in Barry Orvis, Neville Daffy, Brendan Forssman and Sean Atkinson. 2 BARWON REGION DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Program Summary Upcoming Events AFCA The Barwon Region has conducted two Level 1 Courses for Youth & Senior coaches with around 100 coaches attending these courses. AFL Player Appearances NAB AFL Auskick Schools The Geelong FC conduct AFL Player Appearances in the Barwon Region. Every AFL Player is required to complete 24 hours in the community promoting the game. The appearances include Auskick Centres, Junior Clubs, Primary & Secondary Schools 50 Community based centres are running throughout the Barwon Region in AFL Victoria continue to encourage female participation at every level in particular NAB AFL Auskick. Thank you to all Centre volunteers who are giving up their time to provide a fun and safe environment for the kids. Ambassadors are integral in promoting and delivering AFL Victoria programs and initiatives in schools. Friday 9 th May School Colac & Surrounds Monday 2nd June Geelong FC Junior Club Night Sunday the 13 th July NAB Auskick Simonds Stadium Registrations are now open! For details on locations and times go to AFL Victoria Herald Sun Country Shield will be played on Wednesday 16 July (First Wednesday of Term 3) at Simonds Stadium in Geelong. AFL9s AFL 9s is a modified version of Australian Rules Football. Non contact with 9 players a side makes for a fast, fun and exciting game. Social Competitions for Under 35 s and Over 35 s will begin in October at the Deakin YMCA venue, Waurn Ponds. Visit for more information

8 Why wear a Mouthguard? Anyone who participates in a sport that carries a risk of contact to the face should wear a mouthguard. This includes obvious sports such as football, boxing and rugby, and also collision sports where unexpected contact often happens. Why do you need a mouthguard? A mouthguard helps absorb the shock experienced by a blow to the face, which might otherwise result in an injury to the mouth or jaw. A heavy collision can result in chipped or broken teeth, internal damage to a tooth, tooth loss, injuries to the soft tissue of the mouth, and, in severe cases, concussion or a broken jaw. Injuries like these can lead to long and potentially expensive treatment to restore teeth and the mouth back to normal function and appearance. When should I wear a mouthguard? Mouthguards should be worn whilst playing and training for any sport that could involve contact to the face. Other Mouthguard Tips: The Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommend that only a professionally custom-fitted mouthguard should be worn. Check your mouthguard every 12 months for optimal fit and protection. Keep your mouthguard clean and store it in a rigid container, away from heat to ensure it maintains its shape. Every year thousands of people are treated for dental injuries, which could have been prevented, or the severity minimised, by wearing a protective mouthguard.
